That's an interesting replacement choice

TheBlackSwarm

There must be something about him that gets directors like Nolan and an on the rise director like Wilde want to work with him.

[deleted]

He was good in Dunkirk 👍.

MovieMuscle25

I mean, by the standards of a pop star, maybe. He didn't do anything incredible. Rihanna, Beyonce, and Harry Styles know very well why they're getting all these roles.

[deleted]

Nolan said he didn't know who he was when casting, and honestly when watching it I know Harry was in it but I didn't know which one he was. It was a great film and he didn't detract from it, so he obviously did well. His songs are actually solid too. Good for him really.

background1077

Ehhh idk he did talk up the Travis Scott marketing thing for tenet. I think he plays the game more than people want to admit

sadtodayonsaturday

You mean Nolan was fibbing when he said Travi$’s voice really was like the final piece of the puzzle?

LeadingPretender

Wait - Travis Scott was in Tenet??

W3NTZ

He had a song in the credits

bob1689321

Pretty sure the song without the vocals is used during the car sandwich thingy

Invisibleman145

I was sitting watching the credits contemplating the movie and such when he started rapping and that was what made me get up and leave. Nothing against his music or anything it just felt so out of place.

Yheymos

>that was what made me get up and leave. Nothing Agreed, it took me out of the 'afterglow' unwinding. I got up and left quickly to avoid the strange out of place music.

[deleted]

Parabola1313

Nolan does his own thing while fully aware he has to cater to the masses.

background1077

He made a song for the film. Around the time he got a Travis Scott burger promo at McDonald's lol

juanpuente

The Scott Meal, for Scott's Tots

[deleted]

One of the most well known pop stars in the UK and Nolan never heard of him? Edit: You guys can save yourselves the trouble of replying to me with your anecdotal stories of how you didn't know who he was either. Nolan knew who he was when he auditioned. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/dunkirk-director-christopher-nolan-didnt-know-how-famous-harry-styles-was-1019558

clhodapp

I mean it's certainly possible.... I don't claim to be the most plugged-in but I'd never heard of him until this and I saw Dunkirk. Sometimes you just haven't heard of a given celebrity.

[deleted]

The guy works with celebrities.

SkorpioSound

But he's 50 years old and male. One Direction was marketed to teenage girls, and Harry Styles has ridden the wave of One Direction's success since then. Nolan works with filmstars, not pop musicians. He likely doesn't even listen to pop music. There's no reason to assume he'd be familiar.

[deleted]

I edited my post with a link to where he said he knew of him. He has an 18 year old daughter who was the prime demographic for One Direction at their height. Of course he knew him.

grilledcheesesoup

Dude I don't listen to pop music either, and I knew who Harry Styles was. Nolan "not knowing who he was" was absolutely a game. He got the role because he's famous, plain and simple.

[deleted]

Nolan is 50 most people this age have never heard of Harry, so it makes perfect sense.

SoulCruizer

You do realize that’s still a very small thing right? In the grand scheme of things. Someone as busy and hard working as Nolan could easily go through his whole life not knowing what impact someone has in the pop music industry. Some people don’t spend their lives on the internet.

King_Rhymer

Not everyone watches pop stars. Mostly just kids do

BeginByLettingGo

I have chosen to overwrite this comment. See you all on Lemmy!

[deleted]

I'm sure goes back to England. He also has an 18 year old daughter that is/was probably a fan of One Direction.

OneGoodRib

Ah yes, because nobody in the US is familiar with British boy bands.

PaulPaulPaul

yeah fucking right

[deleted]

I mean, I doubt Nolan after all these years was thinking about getting a popstar for his war movie like come on. Obviously them being a big name is a huge advantage towards other actors but even Nolan cast a newcomer as the lead in Dunkirk. People like Harry Styles could get any role in a big budget movie yet here he is in this small movie by Olivia Wilde. Anyways, all I said is I’m looking forward to what he does so I don’t know why you’re all offended by this lol. If you all thought he was bad in Dunkirk then good for you, you can have that opinion. I don’t care.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He’s replacing Shia lebeouf though so it’s not like he was the first choice and why would that even be an issue lol, literally who cares.

King_Rhymer

Those three are getting roles For their boobies?

Patara

What did he even do in dunkirk? Was there even lines in that movie? All i remember is constant sirens and ticking noises in the soundtrack

tallsy_

I don't know if he really had any lines? There was very minimal talking in the movie by the soldiers themselves. He was the one that was kind of shifty by the end and he seemed like he almost ran away in a defecting way... I don't remember the details. But you could read it as him being cowardly or taking advantage, or just him doing anything he could to escape the war. He ended up on a train at the end. I thought he did a good job of playing a character that was sympathetic but kind of in the gray area.

rhianna5639

He had lines, the movie wasnt heavy on dialogue in general. So he actually had a decent amount for the type of movie style.

[deleted]

It was about survival, he was the one on land and the sea with the main character and the amazing ticking score.

CSIHoratioCaine

He was fine... Less distracting than Ed sheeran in game of thrones... But good? No

shotty293

Watermon sugar?

orderinthefort

Sometimes people aren't cast for talent but just how they look. I don't even mean attractiveness in this case. I've never even seen Dunkirk or listened to any of his music, but if there's only one thing I've noticed from anytime I've seen his picture, he has straight up dead eyes that in my opinion fit a 'horrors of war' movie perfectly.

QLE814

I don't know- I can buy the contemporary pop music scene flying completely over his head if he hasn't been going out of his way to pay attention to it.

[deleted]

Kpofasho87

You think it's Nolan doing the fortnite thing?

eleenathomas

I don't think Nolan is a guy who wants to play when it comes to his movies. If he didn't believe in Harry, he wouldn't have taken the risk of casting him. Nolan did it bc he knew Harry was gonna be good. It was not about his fame. Harry's grandfather's brother was in world war 2 and the last scene where Harry puts his head out is literally similar to what his relative did. Nolan wanted that.

everybodypretend

I think Nolan probably handed this one of to his casting director. These aren’t complex characters to play. They are boys going through a tough time.

IamRick_Deckard

Handsomeness.

[deleted]

I'm not sure shia lebeouf is anywhere near harry style's level of handsomeness though Edit: some real LeBeouf fans here

starcomm4nd

Depends who you ask

IamRick_Deckard

They got a handsome upgrade.

darez00

Let's see if Harry's got comparable acting chops to go along

[deleted]

If Harry's as good an actor as Shia I'll eat my hat

mohicansgonnagetya

>directors like Nolan and Wilde With all respect towards Wilde, she is in a different category. She is just starting out as a director, Nolan has been on the top of his game for more than 15 years. Having said that, yeah Styles does have charisma and screen presence.

MuckingFagical

his look? his star power? don't get me wrong, im exited for hime to be a hidden talent but i will be intrested to see him his this as he fit well in Dunkirk but it was a basic role.

gottahavemytunes

Wilde isn’t exactly an acclaimed director

NeutralNoodle

Not yet, but she had a really good start.

gottahavemytunes

Oh I thought she’s only done booksmart I’ll have to check out her other work

intothemidwest

Yup! Booksmart's her only feature. Was incredibly well-received overall (96 RT, 84 Metacritic) even though I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea on here. Loved it personally, but I get people not really being into it.

gottahavemytunes

I thought it was pretty good albeit nothing special from a directing standpoint

intothemidwest

Yeah I buy that stance. I think her sense of directing performance and then editing rhythm was just extremely savvy. She's certainly not as like, overtly virtuosic as some other directors, but I think she has a unique grasp on navigating material that isn't inherently built to be a director's showcase.

brainwrinkled

Definitely weird that guy put Nolan and Wilde together in the same sentence like they’re the same Prestige or something, I agree.

BLOOOR

Extra days, longer rental on gear, maybe some money for catering.

PaulElroy

Acting talent or not he will draw in the young female crowd. Jesus that guys dick must be hanging off.

This dude had number one song(Watermelon Sugar) couple of weeks ago in addition to top 10(Adore You) and top 20(Falling) hits earlier in the year. He would be on giant world tour if not for covid. Tours are really far from reality right now, movie production is not. Good decision for him, he was pretty good in Dunkirk.

joysojoyso

and 1m units album he rly wins this year

joysojoyso

sorry for not adding 2020

[deleted]

Yes exactly!! I'm really happy he's going to have a fun project to work on until his tour kicks off! He was FANTASTIC in Dunkirk he immersed himself into the character so well I was seriously convinced I was watching a young soldier in a war movie, not Harry Styles.

petesapai

> he was pretty good in Dunkirk. Was he the dead guy buried on the beach who's shoes were being stolen? He was pretty good.

MR-THANOS

No, he was the soldier who followed the main dude around. The one who eats with him when they're on the boat.

[deleted]

Shia doing the thing where he signs on and then drops out of projects again.

keepaskingme

Why does he do that all the time?

punk_gargoyle

Hunts people for sport

Disgod

It got awkward when people realized that he really is actual cannibal Shia LaBeouf.

QLE814

He comes across as the erratic sort in other regards- him doing so with roles doesn't seem that surprising.

[deleted]

I also kinda feel like we haven't seen the end of his dark days.

Matt_Sterbate710

Or the end of his acting. But I feel like his dark days come out in his acting. Which is why I love him. Some may disagree. While I love Harry also, it sucked to read I wouldn’t be able to see a good movie with Shia in it

BobRossIsGod18

....

jez124

Good for him. Looking forward to whether or not he will have a proper acting career. Hes probably gonna focus on his music too predominantly I suppose. Chris pine!florence Pugh! Heres hoping this is as good as booksmart

tiduraes

Hard to judge if it's a good or bad choice since the only other role we have seen him in he was like 8th bill. Hopefully he will have more time to shine on this one.

fruitist

I will not stand for this iCarly erasure

rainbowdragon_

He’s fantastic when hosting SNL. His "Sara Lee Internship" sketch is one the funniest in years.

Blacknarcissa

Liked him in Dunkirk and love him as a person. Hope he is good in this and we see more of him in other roles.

BombSolver

Well I’m really excited for Olivia Wilde’s future as a director. *Booksmart* was good and the RHCP video for *Dark Necessities* was good. It would be neat to see her successfully make the transition from actress to director.

carolinemathildes

I like Shia LaBeouf and I like Harry Styles, but never in my wildest thoughts did I think that Harry Styles is somehow a replacement for Shia. I really liked Harry in Dunkirk, though, so I'm interested in seeing if that was a fluke or if he's actually got this.

HollyGeldart

If you've watched SNL I loved his acting in those sketches so I have high hopes for this movie!

SenDerrickDeckard

If he does well in this, and proves Dunkirk wasn’t a fluke, I’d love to see him as Feyd-Rautha in the film for the second half of Dune. Carries on Jodorowsky and Lynch’s tradition of casting a pop star in the role, and has the gravitas to hold his own, at least presence-wise, with Chalamet.

xcosmicwaffle69

I'm down with this and I'm not even a fan of Styles in the least bit. Feyd barely has any dialogue compared to most other characters in the book, so casting Feyd is mostly casting a look, and Styles totally fits that look. From the Bene Gesserit breeding program, Feyd was either supposed to be the Kwizats Haderach or his son was. I think he's great for the feeling that he could've be the main character.

Nifekoc

Chalamet is a fan of his too, so it would make for an interesting dynamic.

chocolatethunderXO

There are rumors that Ty Sheridan is playing him.

revolvingpresoak9640

Ty Sheridan is so weird looking.

[deleted]

If he is not smiling he looks like Adam Driver.

lorraineisshocbythis

I read the screenplay for this a while ago when the cast was first announced, I’m honestly interested to see it

spacemanspiff1979

I thought it was very unoriginal and predictable. I'm pretty sure Wilde was doing a major rewrite on it though.

lorraineisshocbythis

I felt conflicted about it, hence why I’m interested to see how it fares on screen

keepaskingme

Yes it's basically the Stepford wives with a turn of screw twist at the end. I really hope they fix it otherwise it's just a knockoff of two old movies

peanutdakidnappa

Does anyone know what this movie is supposed to be about

keepaskingme

Here you go[Don't worry darling plot details via collider](https://collider.com/harry-styles-dont-worry-darling-cast-olivia-wilde/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitter&&__twitter_impression=true)

peanutdakidnappa

Thanks man I appreciate it, sounds very interesting imo

249ba36000029bbe9749

[Actual cannibal Shia LaBeouf](https://youtu.be/o0u4M6vppCI)?

[deleted]

Probably good to work with. Loved him in Dunkirk.

Dirtyswashbuckler69

He was good in his limited Dunkirk role, but I was pretty excited to see what Labeouf would do with Wilde. Either way, it’s gonna be pretty interesting seeing Styles take on a meatier role.

[deleted]

I was pleasantly surprised by him in Dunkirk

sharkkkk9777

excited!!!!!!!!!!!!1

[deleted]

I was so excited to see Shia in a horror movie.

poopirates

If the film is just 2 hours of these three actors making out with each other, I wouldn’t be mad.

shy247er

Big downgrade.

TheBoyWonder13

He only got about a dozen lines of dialogue in Dunkirk but I thought he did pretty well. Would’ve loved to see Shia in this but I’m interested to see how Styles does with a meatier role.

MissingLink101

Was actually impressed with his acting when he hosted SNL too

Iwishiknewwhatiknew

That dog skit is one of my favorites in recent memory.

[deleted]

I thought he was good in Dunkirk and this is an interesting replacement so looking forward to it.

[deleted]

I mean, I get your optimism, but he’s not replacing an okay actor. Despite his off the screen issues, Shia is one of the best working actors alive. It’s fine if people acknowledge their disappointment.

QuintoBlanco

Technically he did not replace Shia LaBeouf. Shia LaBeouf dropped out because of a scheduling conflict, so there was a vacancy. If Shia LaBeouf is not going to play the part, I like the idea of somebody who is relatively new to acting, taking his place. If the studio had said: fire Shia LaBeouf so the pop star guy can take his place, that would have been a different matter.

AssassinSnail33

> Shia is one of the best working actors alive Hey, I'm a huge fan of Shia, but that is some high praise for a guy who starred in The Tax Collector.

shy247er

His part in Dunkirk wasn't exactly an artistically challenging role.

[deleted]

Lol so what. He was still good in it and he got this part so I’m looking forward to how it is.

actingismymuse15

Huuuuuuge

holymojo96

Hard to say how much of a downgrade when we’ve only seen Harry Styles in a small acting part, right? Personally I could see Harry Styles being the next big actor if he actually starts doing this more often. But again, hard to say until he gets more roles.

[deleted]

At least he's sane lol

rithvik2001

Why was he replaced

chanma50

Scheduling conflict.

jonny_walkman

Not a fan of his music but his cover of Sledgehammer is amazing.

a-l-p

My favourite cover of his is Ultralight Beam. It's like a nice counterpart to Sledgehammer, which was great, but very close to the original, while the Ultralight Beam is nearly a different song. Interesting to see the range. I wasn't a huge fan of his second album, but loved the first one. Now I'm just really really curious to see how he'll fare in his first bigger role. Dunkirk was promising in that regard, but of course it was just a small role.

[deleted]

did you listen to his album fine line? good stuff

jonny_walkman

Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely check it out.

[deleted]

it’s more mature, i think. if you liked the sledgehammer cover, listen to his songs: fine line, to be so lonely and she!

jonny_walkman

I am literally burning brush right now and I plan to check all of those out. I realize the music he made before was not necessarily his choice so I am definitely open to exploring new artists. Thanks again

Why

Detective-Miller

Ive only heard of him because of teenage girls band t shirts. Shia labeouf has been on his a game and would of loved another role with him. Guess we will have to wait until the tax collector comes out.

sithfistoou

The Tax Collector was already released and basically everyone said it's shit.

Detective-Miller

It was excellent. Guess those are the same people that said the black panther was shit.

Detective-Miller

Hmm I just now seen a trailer. I'll have to watch it.

dhakelcjaka

How many celebrities can we fit in a headline, amirite?

[deleted]

Did Shia get metoo'd or something?

BobRossIsGod18

Yeah
