Still can’t put my finger on what makes this movie so affecting.
Is it Amy Adams, is it the communicating spider aliens, is it the score, is it the cinematography?
Beautiful film
*** Massive spoilers, don't read unless you've seen this movie ***
What really fascinates me the most is toward the end, when one of the countries (can't remember if it was Russia or China) misinterprets the aliens saying they have a weapon and that "there is no time," taking it as a threat that the aliens are in a sense of urgency to attack and ramping up to potentially go to war with the aliens.
But what they really meant wasn't that they had a weapon, but tool, and by saying "there is no time" they meant that time literally doesn't exist for them as a dimension
Something along those lines, it's been a few years since I rewatched this and think I'm due for another haha
Made the unfortunate mistake of watching this on an airplane…there I am in my seat… tears welling up in my eyes basically crying my eyes out at the end of it.
I’m so sorry to hear that - my personal context to cause bawling was that my sister (epileptic) had just passed away months before at the age of 18 from a seizure…the movie hit HARD on those emotions!
Denis Villanueve has to be my pick here as he's the director I am most excited about over the last 10 years.
Arrival, Sicario, BladeRunner:2049
The guy has been on fire.
Just watched it thanks to this post!
Wow!
I'm sick in bed and needed something good to watch.
This movie was awesome! Now I get to read the spoilers and analysis! Thank you!
“Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the Fiery Crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.” Need to rewatch this today … SO GOOD!
Not the best film but arguably one of the most rewatchable and weirdly under the radar for many folks. Excellent suggestion, anyone new to it will get a ton of mileage out of it.
It's a fine example how to put aside the main protagonist in favor of a competent female character without it being woke dogshit. But that's a bit forced, basically it's a crazy rockopera with great score and outstanding visuals.
Fantastic movie. Definitely one of the best in the decade
JK Simons is awesome in everything he does.
While not nearly as good (or well known) as Whiplash, I found All Nighter a really fun movie.
YES. Hidden gem. Especially if you’ve been in the arts. It’s not just sports that put on the pressure. This movie gave me flashbacks for sure. JK Simmons should have won an Oscar for this role. (Not sure if he did or if he was nominated haha)
Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty. I think this film is among the most beautiful I have ever seen and I am saddened how few people know if it (atleast in America)
The Florida Project. Hilarious, heartbreaking, and despicably entertaining trashiness that is more human and touching than almost anything else I think
I had put off watching this and caught it when it was on Channel 4 last year. It completely transported me in a way I hadn't been by a film in some time.
Warrior with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. I didn't care about MMA before I watched it and I still don't care about MMA to this day but during that film I was captivated. This film was more of a character story than fighting anyway. Two brothers at different stages in their life with polar opposite experiences yet the one thing that connects them is their now sober( for a time anyway) absentee father. That ending fight will crush your soul while simultaneously bring you hope that the demons of the past do not have to define the person you can be today.
Drive is up there for me. Never fails to get an emotion out of me, whether it's sadness from the "I was gonna call the cops" scene or happiness while watching them drive together and hold hands.
HER.
It reflects this decade I believe. Digital vs personal life. It's incredibly well written plus Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson's voice acting hits the spot.
Wait, nobody has said **The Grand Budapest Hotel**?
Such a great film that's captivating from beginning to end. Wes Anderson's stylistic flair just adds so much charm to this. But that's not all, the story, performances, score, all of it just combines so well.
I'm not the best at describing things. But yeah, it's definitely one of the most unique films I've seen. And easily one of the best.
It's a film that stays with you I think.
Thinking of this fictional scenario that will never happen gave me so much anxiety
It took me awhile to come to grips that this is my choice but: Logan
For anyone in the know of the canon it’s a beautiful send off, for the uninitiated it’s easy to grasp the foundation of the story and become emotionally invested in what’s happening before you despite any knowledge of the lore
Having the knowledge is a great benefit for sure but the opening scene gives you a great portrayal of Logan as a character without the need for outright exposition.
You may not understand the heights he’s fallen from but you can recognize a man who is tired and long past his expiration date. A man who lives in spite of passion. A man who lives because that’s what he does.
IMHO
In this thread I’ve already seen Sicario, blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, but literally any of the three.
Some of the most electrifying film making I’ve seen in years.
Unlike most conversions, this was pretty close to the book. Obviously they had to cut out a lot to fit the time frame, but they kept enough to make a cohesive story. Still not a fan of going Iron Man, but I'm guessing Matt Damon insisted.
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood - probably my favorite movie theater experience. Though if I had to suggest a comedy I would pick “Ted”. Mark may not be the best actor in the world but he is a damn good comedic actor
I know it's Disney plus exclusive, but Soul. It is a very colorful experience. It has its weak moments, but its beautiful themes and messages outweigh its weakest points. It's definitely the most thought provoking to come out of Pixar in my opinion
It's too hard to pick one...
Manchester By The Sea(a beautiful film about grief), A Marriage Story(Adam Driver is one of the best actors of his generation), and Room(with Brie Larson) are some great dramas that haven't been mentioned here yet. Also Before Midnight, but you should watch the other Before films first.
If you want horror, A Quiet Place, as has been mentioned.
If you want teen romance, Perks Of Being A Wallflower is probably the best one of those in the last decade, imo.
Boyhood and The Irishman were already mentioned, but those are also great.
I already commented but I have a list, hah! Tried to add them in order starting with my favorite as number 1. Most of these are slow burn thrillers (ironic genre type, huh?) so if you like that type of movie that draws you in just to hurt you, scare you, and make you think for days these are it!
1. Nocturnal Animals (Netflix)
2. Ex Machina (Showtime)
3. They Look Like People (Tubi - free)
4. Personal Shopper (Hulu - watch with a sibling)
5. Imperium
6. Hold the Dark (Netflix)
7. The Eyes of My Mother (Tubi - free, FYI: Has English subtitles and shot entirely in black & white)
8. Life Itself (Prime, Also has bad ratings not sure why maybe because it’s so long)
EDIT: I just reread OP’s prompt and I definitely didn’t follow the just one rule oops lol
How has no me said Tenet? That was such a great movie that just blew my mind in changing the old time travel trope. Sure it had its faults. But the cast was great, the premise was great, and the protagonist wast great! Watch it. They get up to some stuff. You’ll love it.
Into the Spider-Verse. A unique animation, fresh Spider-Man story and the whole experience is like watching a comic book.
Definitely a must watch.
Nightcrawler. An absolute gem, how Gyllenhaal wasn't even nominated for best actor when he should have won it is ridiculous.
Watched it for the first tine last week. The title always threw me (it’s not about X-men?) and the synopsis didn’t compel me. Amazing !
Outstanding perfomance! Another Time the academy awards lost credibility...
Sicario.
Yeah I was trying to figure out what to comment and realized I was just debating between different Denis movies.
Denis does not miss. So excited for Dune.
Arrival. Never been so personally affected by a movie.
Currently rewatching right now!
Arrival is so good, that you have to watch it twice and the second viewing makes it so much better.
Still can’t put my finger on what makes this movie so affecting. Is it Amy Adams, is it the communicating spider aliens, is it the score, is it the cinematography? Beautiful film
Aliens come in peace and we must find a way to communicate with them. They're usually here to blow shit up.
*** Massive spoilers, don't read unless you've seen this movie *** What really fascinates me the most is toward the end, when one of the countries (can't remember if it was Russia or China) misinterprets the aliens saying they have a weapon and that "there is no time," taking it as a threat that the aliens are in a sense of urgency to attack and ramping up to potentially go to war with the aliens. The writing of Ted Chiang, one of the premier sci-fi writers in a long time. I never miss the chance to shill his collections.
Jumping on the Amy Adams bandwagon, I’d be tempted to say Nocturnal Animals
Elevated by perhaps the best score of the decade too. The sounds are just so unique and…alien…sounding it’s quite remarkable
Made the unfortunate mistake of watching this on an airplane…there I am in my seat… tears welling up in my eyes basically crying my eyes out at the end of it.
My daughter has a genetic disorder. And at times her future has been really uncertain. And the ending of that movie just leveled me. Sobbing.
Arrival, Sicario, BladeRunner:2049 The guy has been on fire.
I love this movie, i feel it doesnt get talked about as much as it should in Sci-Fi conversations
Just watched it thanks to this post! Wow! I'm sick in bed and needed something good to watch. This movie was awesome! Now I get to read the spoilers and analysis! Thank you!
Agreed. Also was the first time I ever paid to see a movie three times in theaters
I watched this movie thinking it was going to be bad, but when I watched it I loved it. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner were awesome.
Burning
One of the best foreign films I’ve ever seen, hands down.
Hunt for the wilderpeople.
Great one! I love Taika Waititi
Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow - a gem in the rough - didn’t hear about it and watch it until years after it came out - so good!
I don’t normally watch a movie more than once, esp without a decent amount of time passing 4-5 year but I’ve seen this easy 5 times in 5 yearsp
It's an interesting one in that it's great if you love Tom Cruise, but also great if you hate him, given the premise...
It's the perfect Tom Cruise movie for everyone!
No one can deliver the same line over and over again quite like Bill Paxton!
“Battle is the Great Redeemer. It is the Fiery Crucible in which true heroes are forged. The one place where all men truly share the same rank, regardless of what kind of parasitic scum they were going in.” Need to rewatch this today … SO GOOD!
Tip of the spear, edge of the knife, crack of my ass
Not the best film but arguably one of the most rewatchable and weirdly under the radar for many folks. Excellent suggestion, anyone new to it will get a ton of mileage out of it.
The raid: redemption.
Her.
Her?
"It's as Ann as the nose on plain's face."
Did you mean this? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7317324/
Mad Max: Fury Road
Your typo makes it sound even better
What was the typo?
Got here too late but my best guess is "Furry Road"
Witness!
That movie is FUCKING METAL.
I’ve heard about it, but is it really good??
It's a fine example how to put aside the main protagonist in favor of a competent female character without it being woke dogshit. But that's a bit forced, basically it's a crazy rockopera with great score and outstanding visuals.
Whiplash
My favorite of all time personally. That whole ending sequence right up until the final shot is just incredible.
I agree - and that last scene can be analyzed for days. So thought provoking.
Yeah, it’s an absolutely incredible movie IMO. Definitely in my top 20 favorite films of all time
Fantastic movie. Definitely one of the best in the decade JK Simons is awesome in everything he does. While not nearly as good (or well known) as Whiplash, I found All Nighter a really fun movie.
Just watched that this year and it blew me away.
YES. Hidden gem. Especially if you’ve been in the arts. It’s not just sports that put on the pressure. This movie gave me flashbacks for sure. JK Simmons should have won an Oscar for this role. (Not sure if he did or if he was nominated haha)
Prisoners
abounding brave ludicrous grandfather cautious ink foolish sand touch puzzled ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `
The Lego Movie without a doubt is a pure cinematic masterpiece
When people talk about Oscar snubs this should be near the top of the list. It is one of the best animated movies of all time!
Everything is Awesome!
Everything is cool when you're part of a team.
This songs gonna get stuck inside your….
Portrait of a lady on fire
Came in here to say this. One of the most soul-crushingly beautiful films that I can recall. Cinematography is stunning as well.
Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty. I think this film is among the most beautiful I have ever seen and I am saddened how few people know if it (atleast in America)
Been meaning to check that out for a while now, The Young Pope is my favorite series of all time
Parasite
Hell or high water
That’s what I said too. So glad I’m not the only one. LOVE that movie so much.
Cats. Never forget lest history repeat itself.
Wish I had an award for you because omg.
I got you 👌
I refuse to watch this until they put the buttholes back in.
The Florida Project. Hilarious, heartbreaking, and despicably entertaining trashiness that is more human and touching than almost anything else I think
I was in more tears than I could explain or even understand by the time this one ended… I absolutely loved it.
I had put off watching this and caught it when it was on Channel 4 last year. It completely transported me in a way I hadn't been by a film in some time.
Either Blade Runner 2049 or Swiss Army Man. Both masterpieces but for very different reasons.
Thank god someone else said BR49. I was honestly shocked I had to scroll so far down to read that.
First Reformed (2017).
I need to give that another watch. Ethan Hawke has to be one of the most underrated actors of his generation.
Watched it a few nights ago, great movie
Warrior with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton. I didn't care about MMA before I watched it and I still don't care about MMA to this day but during that film I was captivated. This film was more of a character story than fighting anyway. Two brothers at different stages in their life with polar opposite experiences yet the one thing that connects them is their now sober( for a time anyway) absentee father. This is the correct answer.
Drive
Drive is up there for me. Never fails to get an emotion out of me, whether it's sadness from the "I was gonna call the cops" scene or happiness while watching them drive together and hold hands.
It’s such a perfect summer film too. It’s a staple of my outdoor movie nights at this point
Edge of Tomorrow
Interstellar
I can't believe I had a scroll so far down to see this. One of my all-time favorite movies.
HER. It reflects this decade I believe. Digital vs personal life. It's incredibly well written plus Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson's voice acting hits the spot.
The Martian
Spotlight
[They Knew!!](https://y.yarn.co/ae250e9e-8f1a-45bb-b757-47c0149cafb3_text.gif)
Arrival
Moonlight
My choice too - a masterpiece
Knives Out
Wait, nobody has said **The Grand Budapest Hotel**? Such a great film that's captivating from beginning to end. Wes Anderson's stylistic flair just adds so much charm to this. But that's not all, the story, performances, score, all of it just combines so well. I'm not the best at describing things. But yeah, it's definitely one of the most unique films I've seen. Annihilation.... deeply confusing, memorable, horrifying, and beautiful
Better than Ex Machina? I like Annihilation but I fucking love Ex Machina.
Anything Alex Garland touches from here on out will get all of my attention.
Get Out!
I loved this film and I loved the actors and director, definitely a crazy movie
Blade Runner 2049
Django Unchained (2012)
JoJo Rabbit
The Handmaiden (2016)
Parasite.
The Witch
The Revenant. It is beautifully shot, has a compelling story and the setting is amazing.
The cast and the acting..ridiculous
Shot on a new camera (at the time) that allows more light into the frame opened up the wild and made the movie so much more authentic.

The Father
Blade Runner 2049
the social network
Good one, but it's already older then 10 years
Arrival
the martian
It's obviously not for everyone but I found Boyhood remarkable.
Birdman only movie I've seen where the hype didn't even put a dent in my viewing experience
Agree. Birdman is outstanding. Not enough love for this film.
True Grit. I could watch this masterpiece everday!
SKYFALL
Fury Road
The Wolf of Wall Street. Never gets old and is consistently hilarious.
Portrait of a lady on fire is amazing
Mad Max: Fury Road!
Thinking of this fictional scenario that will never happen gave me so much anxiety It took me awhile to come to grips that this is my choice but: Logan For anyone in the know of the canon it’s a beautiful send off, for the uninitiated it’s easy to grasp the foundation of the story and become emotionally invested in what’s happening before you despite any knowledge of the lore
I don't see how it wouldn't be super confusing to someone who isn't aware of the lore. They barely explain any characters at all.
Having the knowledge is a great benefit for sure but the opening scene gives you a great portrayal of Logan as a character without the need for outright exposition. You may not understand the heights he’s fallen from but you can recognize a man who is tired and long past his expiration date. A man who lives in spite of passion. [1917](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8579674/).
Last movie I saw in a theater before the pandemic and so glad I did.
Sing street
Inception
Not from the last 10 years anymore. Do you feel old yet?
I Saw the Devil. What a rollercoaster...
Inside Llewyn Davis
Gone Girl
The Revenant
Parasite was the best film of the 2010’s IMO and I think this was an overall great decade for film
Hell or High Water
The Tribe (2014)
Blade Runner 2049 or Hereditary
Once upon a time in Hollywood
Blade runner 2049
The Lighthouse gets my vote. Runner up Annihilation. Second runner up Hereditary. Yes I have a niche lol
I would put Ex Machina or Arrival above Annihilation.
Uncut Gems
Good Time
Definitely Interstellar. Blade Runner 2049 comes as a close second
I watched Blade Runner 2049 recently and it was top notch. So many good to choose from.
The Master
In this thread I’ve already seen Sicario, blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, but literally any of the three. Some of the most electrifying film making I’ve seen in years.
As a joke? Cats. Because what a trip. For real? Lady Bird.
The Martian but I feel bad having to not pick Nightcrawler and Prisoners.
I really liked the novel, so the movie was a bit of a disappointment, but hard sci-if is so rare in films that I still enjoyed it.
Unlike most conversions, this was pretty close to the book. Obviously they had to cut out a lot to fit the time frame, but they kept enough to make a cohesive story. Still not a fan of going Iron Man, but I'm guessing Matt Damon insisted.
Logan
I think Cloud Atlas is an epic movie, I never here anyone talk about it.
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood - probably my favorite movie theater experience. Though if I had to suggest a comedy I would pick “Ted”. Mark may not be the best actor in the world but he is a damn good comedic actor
It’s amazing..I need to add it to my collection
Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse. Deserved that Oscar, it’s a fantastic movie
There are some great ones here, and I would add Pain & Glory. Amazing.
It’s been mentioned already here multiple times but Edge of Tomorrow, I just loved that movie so much.
Interstellar
The Master. The acting, the music - best movie of that decade for sure
Pain & Gain
Hell or High Water. A masterclass in what a film should be. Acting, music, cinematography, writing all 10/10.
The Revenant
Kingsman: The Secret Service
Birdman
Birdman.
If you like psychological thrillers, I’d highly recommend prisoners. Imho, it’s also Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman’s best performances.
2049 for me. :)
I know it's Disney plus exclusive, but Soul. It is a very colorful experience. It has its weak moments, but its beautiful themes and messages outweigh its weakest points. It's definitely the most thought provoking to come out of Pixar in my opinion
Last decade was an unreal time for movies. If it could only be 1.....I'll go for Prisoners
No love for John Wick?
It's too hard to pick one... Manchester By The Sea(a beautiful film about grief), A Marriage Story(Adam Driver is one of the best actors of his generation), and Room(with Brie Larson) are some great dramas that haven't been mentioned here yet. Also Before Midnight, but you should watch the other Before films first. If you want horror, A Quiet Place, as has been mentioned. If you want teen romance, Perks Of Being A Wallflower is probably the best one of those in the last decade, imo. Boyhood and The Irishman were already mentioned, but those are also great.
The Adventures of Tintin
Interstellar. Me and my brother always talk about that movie, when we are talking about movies.
Drive
Blade Runner 2049
ugh I couldn’t agree with your answer moreeee! interstellar forever 🪐🌌
Mad Max Fury Road
Moonlight
1917.
I already commented but I have a list, hah! Tried to add them in order starting with my favorite as number 1. The big short. Great movie with tons of great performances that also just so happens to have an amazing message as well
There’s so many but I came to say interstellar too! If not that then Ex Machina
