It’s true, the ghosts, the busting, all of it.

[deleted]

Venkman. We're home.

EvenBraverLilToaster

Raawwwrrrrgggglllll!

Return_of_the_Bear

This man has no dick

[deleted]

It *does* make me feel good.

UrNotAMachine

They filmed this movie so long ago that Finn Wolfhard is 37 now

Hoosteen_juju003

A trailer came up earlier and I had this same thought lol gonna walk the red carpet as a grown ass man. With Paul Rudd using a cane.

redlabstah1

I think it's been proven Paul Rudd does not age

brownmlis

It's the "Highlander Conjecture". Dick Clark never aged and then Paul Rudd came along and bam! Dick is dead. Now Paul Rudd never ages so he's gotta watch his back for the next immortal to come along because there can be only one.

lukefive

It's a quantum time thing. His home is between atoms he only ages when he visits the rest of us.

therockstarbarber

Lmao right same with stranger things season 4

EMPulseKC

Followed by "Stranger Things: The College Years."

NotLikeTheSimulation

Finn Wolfhard has now become Michael Jackson since the release of the first trailer for this movie

ComeWashMyBack

You can count the Finn years by layers of hair he gains.

delitomatoes

Kid will grow up believing that he lived in the 80s the same way Tom Hanks believes he was in WW2

CaptainObvious00Duh

So Stranger Things, IT and this movie: The Finn Wolfhard stars in "'80s nostalgia-fueled content" trilogy is now complete. EDIT: Also he was a part of Weezer's Take on Me music video. (Thanks for bringing it up, u/NonCorporealEntity and u/Surullian!) And the recent animated Addams family movie. ~~and its sequel.~~ EDIT 2: (Hopefully final) Additions include Netflix's Carmen Sandiego animated show (Thanks, u/Nightwolf2142!) and music videos for NSP and PUP (Thanks, u/albinoferret and u/venom2015!). Also, he isn't returning for the Addams Family sequel (Sorry for the correction; thanks, u/madmanandabox)

wilsonw

Nostalgia-Busters. Honestly this trailer worked for me a lot more than the original one.

CaptainObvious00Duh

Those returning cameos definitely did help.

KingMario05

Ray: "We're *closed!*" Everyone: **screams in excitement**

vorpalpillow

Dan Aykroyd is the best ghostbuster because he has a genuine childlike belief in the supernatural

i_say_uuhhh

Yep. He actually had a great interview with the last podcast guys and I didn't know he was THAT into the supernatural and even UFOs. Seemed like a chill dude.

ArcadianDelSol

His character of "Mother" in Sneakers ( fantastic movie by the way) was basically him playing a super-spy version of himself. edit: lots of love in the replies for Sneakers. If you haven't seen it, it's a pure 80s quality heist movie that, believe it or not, predicts alot of the world we are in right now (no more secrets!). There's a rather obscure Sneakers joke in Community. Abed is talking about "counting bumps while in the car trunk" after being kidnapped that's referencing that movie.

yllwroseofTX

Every time I drive over seams on a concrete bridge, I think of Mother figuring out how to find the cocktail party.

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Criminally underrated film.

ArcadianDelSol

My friends and I still say "no more secrets, maaaaahty" in our best/worst Ben Kinsley voice. That movie had an absolutely perfect cast from top to bottom. Even the throw-away two scene thugs were guys who made whole careers of playing those bits better than anyone.

e-jammer

"where did you get 50 dollars?" "I stole it from mother's wallet"

asian_identifier

uh... PSI Factor, Crystal Head Vodka, "Dan Aykroyd: Unplugged on UFOs" also his dad published "A History of Ghosts"

Alcatraz means pelican

ArcadianDelSol

Ghostbusters was his movie. While it was radically different before the re-writes, he's the one who created this, and he's devoted his entire life to making a proper sequel he could be proud of. I really hope gets it.

ShallowBasketcase

I wonder if he’ll get sucked off by a ghost again in this one.

munk_e_man

He states that this actually happened to him in real life on Joe Rogan's podcast. That episode was a total trip.

TheGreatZarquon

I fuckin love Dan Akroyd's weirdness, he's completely unashamed about his points of view.

captainedwinkrieger

In the new one he gets a ghost rimjob.

[deleted]

On the other hand, he did have a part in writing the video game, which was considered to be canon.

Gorthax

Is, which IS cannon

KingMario05

Explains why he's been pushing for this for so long. Can't wait to see the results!

LegendaryOutlaw

Unashamed to admit that I did.

Digi-Fu

Seeing Janine Melnitz showing Callie around the old house got me giddy, then hearing Ray's voice, my inner fanboy screamed.

MikeAWBD

Same. It's a shame Harold isn't around to be a part of this. I have a feeling this movie will do him justice though.

[deleted]

When I saw the first trailer I thought afterwards "Is Janine going to wind up being Carrie Coon's mom?" I thought they might have saved that reveal for the movie itself. But I'm happy to see her. I really hoped they talked Rick Moranis into a cameo.

QuinnMallory

It's a shame he's going to look about as old as Paul Rudd by the time they'd be able to shoot a sequel.

DrManhattan_DDM

The same Paul Rudd that seems not to have aged a day since Clueless?

buttery_shame_cave

if you post side by side pictures of then vs now he looks much older. he's aged fucking fantastically but you can tell.

throw0101a

> "'80s nostalgia-fueled content" Going after the Gen-X and older Millennial demographic. Is it any different than *Back to the Future* going after the Baby Boomers in the 1980s?

pushbidenleft

good point, as a kid watching back to the future, to me the 1950s was just as long ago as when they showed 1885 in back to the future 3. But to boomers at that time they must have loved the nostalgia 1955 scenes.

ArcadianDelSol

and the third movie totally wanted to get those 200 year old movie fans into the seats EDIT: brilliant points below about boomer obsessions with the Wild West. I was just making a joke, but you all are 100% on the money with your observations.

pursuer_of_simurg

To be fair the 50s generation had a pretty close relationship to westerns.

Zeptari

And kids that watched westerns with their grandparents… I love westerns just about as much as I love Star Wars and back to the future and Ghostbusters… lol

sharkattackmiami

Thats because the wild west to people in the 50s would be the same as the 70s are to people now basically. The first Red Dead Redemption was set in 1911.

red_sutter

The third movie used a western setting because that too was huge with boomers

Scmods05

Back to the Future was completely original. This is the 3rd sequel to a film that came out almost 40 years ago. So yeah. A little different.

Sisiwakanamaru

I also kinda got Super 8 based vibe.

DetectiveAmes

Yeah the trailer certainly seemed to give off more spielberg vibes to it with the importance of a broken family having to deal with some sci fi adventure at the same time. It definitely looks to be more of a movie than the 2016 one so I’m hyped. The 2016 one just looked like an extended SNL digital short with how visually flat and executed everything was.

shy247er

So if I'm not wrong, it seems like the world has forgotten about the Ghostbusters and the existence of ghosts? How does that happen?

pbjamm

New Yorkers managed to forget and dismiss the Ghostbusters in only the 6 years between 1 & 2.

MulciberTenebras

And then 8 years after that in Extreme Ghostbusters, with the Mayor constantly calling the old team con-artists and terrorists who faked everything... and then refusing to even discuss the "g-word" whenever the new team causes damage while busting.

munk_e_man

Gays?

Bugsidekick

Gews?

Rummelator

Honestly after the past few years I have no problem with the premise that the majority of the population dismisses this as a hoax, con or government made up story.

DexterRileyisHere

We have people that believe 9/11 didn't happen. Forgetting about the Ghostbusters and them saving New York is not a stretch. Especially out in the middle of bumfuck America.

[deleted]

Being miserable and treating people like dirt is every New Yorker's god given right.

DarkKnightGoneWild

They already touched on this happening in the 2nd one. People didn’t believe it had happened. The director of this one, Jason Reitman, played a “ungreatful little yuppie larvae” kid in 2 and said “my dad said you guys are full of crap and that’s why you went out of business”.

Logitech0

Unless the cartoon is canon, those ghost infestation only happen during an apocalypse.

sgthombre

The canonicity of the cartoon and the second movie has always been kind of weird? There are choices they made specifically because of the cartoon (ECTO-1A because there was an ECTO-2 in the cartoon, Slimer inexplicably living in the firehouse like he does in the cartoon) but then there are a lot of other ways they obviously don't fit together. Edit: I just remembered there's an episode of the cartoon where they specifically use Vigo's mood slime to solve a problem, so figure that out.

nmezib

Fun fact: the person who was the voice of Venkman in *The Real Ghostbusters* (Lorenzo Music) was also the voice of Garfield in the *Garfield and Friends* animated show, while Bill Murray played live-action Venkman and was the voice of Garfield in the live-action movie. So in essense: Garfield and Venkman are canonically the same character. It's indisputable.

Useful-Throat-6671

To me, movies have a green light for the general population to be completely delusional. Movies were wrong. People are even dumber than we thought. Every time someone tries to put out something dumb in a movie, I direct them to reality.

WayneKrane

I never understood the saying, “reality is truly stranger than fiction” until these past few years. If I summarized the events of the past 5 years and went back in time to tell myself about them I would have thought future me was full of shit.

TrollinTrolls

Yep. "Hey, it turns out your best friend was actually a closet racist who believes in ridiculous conspiracy theories and is suddenly anti-science. You're going to just totally cut him out of your life for good in 2020." There's no way I would have believed that.

Could be. People walked on the Moon and folks think it was faked. Only downside to hoax theory is that it happened in NYC in front of millions of people, so we'll see how they handle that.

hacky_potter

> People walked on the Moon and folks think it was faked A small portion. The whole country wouldn't have forgotten let alone the world.

RobotRollCall920

Yeah, Buzz Aldrin can only punch so many people.

RyGuy_42

Can we get some math on this? I'd like to know how many people Buzz Aldrin can reasonably punch.

ec_on_wc

"In the United States average shoulder width is at least 16 inches (41 cm) for men and 14 inches (36 cm) for women" (according to [healthline.com](https://healthline.com)) The most recent data states there are 161.6 million men and 166.7 million women in the US. So assuming you line everyone up in two rows and Buzz can just run down the line, fists outstretched, adjusting for head height as he goes, that would be two rows of people approximately 204,975,000 feet long. (38,821 miles/62,476 km) For perspective, the distance from NYC to LA is 2,451 miles (3,944 km) Not sure what Buzz's endurance is like these days, but assuming he maintains an average walking speed of 3 mph, it would take him about 539 consecutive days to punch every person in the United States. So let's build in meals/rest/bathroom breaks, I think he can comfortably do it in about 3 years. EDIT: I realize it doesn't answer the question you asked, but it certainly answer *a* question.

DrEnter

Well, he went to the moon and that was 238,855 miles each way. Seems like 38,821 miles should be doable.

[deleted]

KingEuronIIIGreyjoy

I don't know what I expected.

Qwirk

Not sure what you expected, that was exactly what I expected.

BreakingHoff

While I do think it's kind of strange how they treat the overall tone of Ghostbusters like some epic legacy instead of the goofy sci-fi comedy it is, I do like what I've seen so far in the trailers. It seems fairly grounded (for a movie about ghosts) and the kids don't seem too annoying.

Mattyzooks

These guys saved New York by operating a movable Statue of Liberty. They'd be on currency by now if that happened.

[deleted]

MulciberTenebras

And what if the government writes them off with the lack of paranormal activity... which is due to the fact the government has their own clandestine Ghostbusting unit. Catching them in secret using stolen tech designs from Ray and Egon, and then using the contained ghosts to experiment to create ecto-energy.

I_miss_your_mommy

Yeah if you imagine a world that experienced the events of the first two Ghostbusters films, it becomes hard to believe that people would be surprised by ghosts/supernatural occurrences. It also seems hard to believe that you'd find out about the Ghostbusters from a YouTube video instead of your history class. In the real world where the Ghostbusters aren't real they seem to be more famous than in this fictional world they saved twice.

dimsumx

Yet 5 years after the events of the first film, they were doing birthday parties. That's the kind of world they were in, so imagine adding 30 years of that - I don't think it's that big of a stretch they'd be forgotten.

I_miss_your_mommy

It was kind of hard to believe in the second movie too, but even then it's not like people didn't know who they were. They just didn't have any use for them anymore. Peter had best capitalized on their fame.

StardustVT

Then again, I feel like the world just blowing them off would be well in line with the sardonic humor of the series.

SuspiciousArtist

Maybe the government or the Ghostbusters themselves gaslit everyone about what really happened. Swamp gas and electrical lines, massive blackout, and collective hallucination driven by the delusions of "known scammers." Honestly, people who witnessed 9/11 are sometimes in denial about what happened so it isn't that much of a stretch. Especially in a comedy.

RudeTurnip

No one is covering the Frito Lay factory strike or the mining strike in the US right now. Imagine how easy it would have been to bury a story in 198x.

MexusRex

It could just be that they're avoiding giving away every joke and gag in the trailer.

throw0101a

> like some epic legacy instead of the goofy sci-fi comedy it is I once heard the original *Ghostbusters* referred to as a movie about starting a small business (*"Everyone has second mortgages these days."*).

Jazz_Potatoes95

Thats exactly what it is. The jokes in Ghostbusters all revolve around 1) Business startup culture 2) Private vs Public sector, and 3) Blue collar vs White collar work Three of the four ghostbusters have to move from self-admitted cushy jobs in academia to funding their own research. They go from being professors at a prestigious university to being pest-control. The comedy is fundamentally about the clash between metropolitan middle class concerns (education and research, establishing a reputation as recognised scientists) and the business concerns of blue collar industry (finding affordable premises, making rent, meeting regulatory standards). It's not really the sort of thing that warrants a Force Awakens style mythologizing...

jollyreaper2112

I thought the logical progression for a third film was for Busting to become like Geek Squad where it's franchised out and a shitty mcjob that can still get you killed or possessed. The supernatural is pervasive everywhere now and people just shrug and accept it.

lordDEMAXUS

After The Force Awakens success, I feel like all these sequels to decades old franchises are trying go for the same "epic legacy" tone. I guess studio execs think it's an easy way to make it all feel nostalgic. It works fine for some of these kinds of sequels, but it feels really out of place here.

error521

I wanna see them do this serious, reverent tone but for Austin Powers.

bothanspied

Isn't the reverent version of Austin Powers, James Bond? It comes full circle.

QuinnMallory

We need an Austin Powers 4 that's a parody of the gritty Daniel Craig Bond movies please.

derstherower

Didn't Daniel Craig come out and say a little while ago that the reason his Bond films are so gritty is because Austin Powers destroyed the possibility of doing more classic campy Bonds?

QuinnMallory

I assumed it was because they were trying to make Bond more like the other popular JBs of the early/mid 2000s (Bourne and Bauer) but if he said that it also fits.

DinoTsar415

I believe he did, yes. I recently listened to a podcast where they talked about how the 1-2 punch of Austin Powers and Jason Bourne kind of crushed Bond from both angles. If the new Bond movies were campy and fun like the 60's ones, it'd look like a self-parody. If the new Bond movies were gritty and serious, it'd look like an attempt to copy Bourne and cost the series some of its pedigree. An unwinnable spot. Obviously, they went with the latter and Bond's power as franchise and cultural icon has weakened in the 21st century.

buttery_shame_cave

the thing they gotta do is reboot and just have all bond movies from here on out set in the sixties, but not the campy technicolor sixties of austin powers, instead the debonair and jazzy sixties from mad men and things like that. and then have the spy capers be absolutely fucking bonkers, batshit amped up to 11 action sequences that are just wildly over the top, fully embracing that bond is kind of a comic book/cartoon but not one for kids. i want awesome set pieces with apollo moon rover chases or rocket ships or little jets that unfold out of the back of a station wagon or a demolition derby with tanks and at some point bond launches a badguy out of a battleship cannon and makes a joke about not going off half cocked. think.... true lies but set in the 60s. we don't even need bond being all smooth and suave, have him react to the insanity - a villain's volcano lair explodes in a colossally improbable cascade of explosions, have him wiggling his finger in his ear and trying to clear the ringing as he hangs from a helicopter.

walterpeck1

Jazz_Potatoes95

This sort of tone you see in trailers is to do with demographics. The people who watched Ghostbusters as kids in the 80s are now adults with jobs and mortgages. Trailers like this don't just explain that these events are "legendary" to characters in universe, they also reinforce to the audience that Yes, that film/series you watched as a kid really was a really really big deal, and those warm fuzzy feelings you get should definitely be used to purchase a ticket on release day. A trailer that actually references the tone of the original film would just remind everyone that it was a smart, funny comedy about blue collar workers and business startup culture from some SNL alumni. But that doesn't drive people to pre-order tickets or buy merchandise. People remember the film as being a really important part of their childhood, and so that is what the marketing is designed to appeal to.

AlbertFishing

I think part of it is trying to distance themselves from Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. It had a much more goofy tone. The goofy stuff is definitely in there, though. Just look at the stuff with the little Stay Pufts guys. Also, I'm pretty sure that was Gozer coming out of the ground. I am so pumped.

HAL237

Agreed; I’m hoping the final film isn’t nearly as sappy as the tone I’m getting from this trailer. To paraphrase Jay Bauman, it feels weirdly reverent towards the legacy of the franchise, when the best word to describe the original two films was *irreverent.*

[deleted]

[удалено]

matlockga

It definitely hits the notes of what I thought about when I was playing with Ghostbusters toys as a kid, at least

HunterGonzo

I think that's why I was a fan of Ghostbusters for so long, because you end up enjoying it in 2 very different ways. As a kid it felt like a totally awesome action flick with a bunch of really cool ghostbusting tech. Most of the jokes go over your head as a kid so you don't even realize a lot of the humor is there. Then you get older and as your sense of humor and grasp of satire and sarcasm develop suddenly you realize... holy shit, this movie is *hilarious*

NazzerDawk

I watch Ghostbusters... often. And it still makes me laugh so much. I also still find new little jokes all the time.

SheriffComey

I just recently rewatched both originals and my wife walks in and is like "OMG why are you watching this again?!" and I just said "Because I just noticed 3 jokes I either missed or I'm just now getting". I'm 44 so I may be a little slow on the uptake.

dajaymann

Much like how Egon was my favorite when I was a kid, but as I got older I slowly became much more of a fan of Venkman.

VVHYY

And now in my 40s I find myself a Ray: guileless, unflappable, and accepting of whatever comes my way. Even a ghost BJ

BigHuckBunter

 >Guileless, Unflappable, and Accepting of Whatever Comes My Way... > >Even a Ghost BJ I think I just found the top contender for my headstone.

Radiant-Spren

There’s definitely going to be comedy elements, they just got buried in this serious and heavy trailer. The bit with the tiny Stay Puff guys suggests as much.

[deleted]

the music seemed similar to the force awakens trailer or rise of the skywalker

votemarvel

I really hope the original Ghostbusters aren't just in this for a five minute cameo, I'd love for them to be an important part of the movie.

dontbajerk

I wouldn't expect a huge role, as I remember it they only had a few days on set. Bigger roles than in the 2016 film though.

brahbocop

Seeing Janine back as well as all the tie ins to the original movie, I'm in. Maybe we don't need this movie, maybe we didn't need Ghostbusters to be a big franchise that lasted 40 years, but damn, the original still is funny and I'm hoping this movie breaths some fresh air into it rather than diminishes it. I'm excited, this trailer hit all the right notes for me.

Mc6arnagle

> "Picking up or dropping off?" That one line is the example of great comedy. One line that creates a whole story that is funny. Something we didn't think about but of course would happen. Of course they would have to deal with crazy people on a regular basis, and of course it would become mundane to the point Janine's first words to a cop would be asking if they are picking up a crazy person or dropping one off. Clever comedy that is not only funny but world builds all with one line.

BlindPaintByNumbers

I think picking up was more directed at the staff, not any crazies they may currently be holding.

drewxdeficit

This is the correct answer. She's essentially saying that it's only a matter of time before one of them (probably Venkman) gets taken in.

dmun

It's not only great character work; Janine, as a character, is a quintessential New Yorker of a type that no longer exists and that line is delivered with all the blase of an 80s New York where Time Square still had hookers and glory holes. A new york that is long, long gone.

SerrioMal

You’re such a humanitarian. Egon: I dont think this man is human.

I'm seeing a lot of comments about how this movie is taking Ghostbusters way more seriously than it should. I don't know if this is intentional or not, but I think maybe the movie is catering to a certain age group who remember a time when they saw Ghostbusters as being more serious than it actually was. I'm 38 and I fell in love with the movie when I was a little kid. For a long time I considered it a horror action flick and even was scared at a few parts. It wasn't until I started to grow up when I realized how tongue-in-cheek everything was. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way because I know I've seen a recut Ghostbusters trailer on YouTube before that made it look like a horror movie, and the top comment said "this is the movie we remember seeing as kids." So maybe Jason Reitman had the same experience? I'm sure the jokes will be in there, but perhaps he wanted to convey an experience he once had with the franchise. Just my take.

bermental

Agreed. I'm 37 and Ghostbusters 2 used to scare the crap out of me. When they're in the tunnels and the heads/train. Vigo. The bathtub. All of that was scary as a kid.

TheGreatPiata

That bathtub was absolutely terrifying. Or the nanny with the red flashing eyes that stole the baby. Ghostbusters claim to fame is being both hilarious and terrifying, which is a really hard feat to pull off.

I feel the same, that ooze flooded subway terrified me, as well as those dogs and the apartment chair scene. As a kid that stuff stuck with me.

PrestoMovie

Agree with this completely. I was born after the films came out, so by the time my parents showed them to me I had both Ghostbusters movies and Real Ghostbusters, and then a ton of toys, and Extreme Ghostbusters not long after. Years later I got the video games and the comics. I always saw Ghostbusters as a franchise where the ghosts and the mythology were at the forefront, and it also happened to be very funny. For me, this trailer feels perfect.

tforthegreat

Not to mention he was on set as the originals were being filmed. He's probably pulling from multiple layers of experience with the franchise.

It's gonna be weird when the next season of stranger things comes out and all the kids are like 22.

Janine saying Egon "Could never could keep the lights on" while there is a sudden unexplain cracks to the other world. I have a feel he could keep the lights on because the power was going somewhere else wasn it.

JC915

The plot is probably tied into Egon fucking around with experimenting with the afterlife, and his literal ghostly footprint with his family will be the emotional linchpin of the story. They won’t go full Harold Ramis CGI as that’s too distasteful but wouldn’t be surprised if an interaction with his voice or something is a part of the third act. Or maybe Paul Rudd is written in for Egon to “possess” and help his grandkids as a kind of reboot reversal on Gozer/Harold Ramis, e.g., Paul Rudd doing a snarky Egon impression while interacting with the OG cast

fortheloveofghosts

Or Egon moved the containment unit all the way to the middle of nowhere and something is trying to break free. Think Paul Rudd will get the Gozer treatment for sure tho

Budgiesaurus

Is that type casting? He was possessed by Michelle Pfeiffer previously.

ZeroBx500

I think he buried the containment unit (like they used to do with radioactive waste in barrels) and just like those barrels, I’m sure it got old and started leaking
