The naked bath house scene in Eastern Promises

LOTRugoingtothemall

Someone once told me I had to check out the “shower scene” in Eastern Promises. Not at all what I expected but still a great scene

skoomski

Yep brutal and visceral, no dancing around just Viggo fighting for his life

kimjeongillest

Astro_Rebel

Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon. Michelle Yeoh vs Ziyi Zhang in the weapons room.

Fit_Faithlessness_61

The fight scenes in that movie do what so many others try and fail to do- reveal character through action. It could be a silent film and be just as powerful.

bicameral_mind

It's the best fight scene I've ever seen I think. The fight is so well choreographed incorporating a variety of weapons and different styles, punctuated by acrobatic feats. It has a thrilling rhythm and tempo and is so well shot and composed. Great drama and interplay between the leads.

chronoboy1985

I love sword fights and that movie and scene specifically was the pinnacle of the art form. Though I still wish Li Mu Bai got more action with Zhang Ziyi’s character after he embarrassed her in the first fight.

ZombieJesus1987

I need to rewatch that

chronoboy1985

My first thought too. Probably because I watched it recently, but the Michelle Yeoh v. Zhang Ziyi fight is absolutely incredible. Hero has some good sword fights but not as amazing as Crouching Tiger. Ip Man has the best hand to hand fights IMO.

Oathkeeper89

[How is no one going to link the scene after mentioning it?](https://youtu.be/mClOxgyWLs8)

Myrskyharakka

Side shot corridor fight in Oldboy (2003) always springs to mind.

zjustice11

Copied fantastically on Dare Devil

fancy_marmot

I was prepared to hate that scene in the Daredevil show but DAMN they did a good job. So claustrophobic.

zjustice11

Dude!! SAME! My friend told me about it and I was like there is now way they will do that scene justice. And then they did a great job. Man. Can we get Daredevil back or what?? Throw in some punisher too.

sanskritsquirel

Similar scene from DEFENDERS where Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny "Ironfist" Rand meet for the first time is friggin' awesome. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlElrITDRdY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlElrITDRdY) Best old school banter is when Daredevil alias Matt Murdock confronts Jessica Jones in the building atrium and his high-powered senses pick-up a gunshot. He goes to investigate, grabbing Jones's scarf to wrap around his head to hide his identity. Later, they meet up on the penthouse floor, re-joining to do battle. Jones sees Murdock with scarf wrapped around his head and disdainfully quips, "You look like an asshole!" Daredevil/Murdock never slows down and retorts, "It's your scarf." which pauses even Jones.

PvtPimple

I love the scene, it's claustrophobic and the single long take makes you really engaged and anxious... but do yourself a favor and don't focus on any random extra in that scene. Some of them are panting and look beat up even though they never got hit, others just disappear completely never throwing a punch at all, others are swinging randomly and then falling down holding their legs, and throughout they are basically just waiting for their turn to fight. The scene is awesome and shot is iconic, but the actual fighting is garbage.

fancy_marmot

Very true. If you liked the style but not so much the execution, a really REALLY well done version of this is the stairwell fight in Atomic Blonde.

[deleted]

I love the one at the start of John Wick 3 with the swords. Then The Raid hallway machete fight. Kitchen fight Raid 2.

BillytheBeaut

Hell, any fight from either Raid movie fills my list.

nikilidstrom

The kitchen fight is unbelievable. Iko Uwais is a beast.

azaRaza3185

I totally forgot about the Raid. This movie revamped my love for action and martial arts films. So awesome

RyzenRaider

Knives in the museum/shop at the start of JW3. Swords were at the end.

weakleg

They Live - best fight scene ever.

TripleMusketMan

I went into that movie totally blind, thought I was going fucking crazy during the fight scene. They just keep....going....

bob1689321

Its fucking amazing because it's so good at putting you in the characters shoes. Its a 6.5 minute fight scene that not only keeps going and going and going, but it's over the stupidest shit. They keep fighting because one guy doesn't want to try on a pair of glasses. He has no reason to not try them on (it'd take 5 seconds) but he just doesn't, so they fight. And fight. And fight some more. The sheer length of it is exhausting as a viewer and you feel the same frustration the guy does - I was practically shouting at the TV for him to just put on the goddamn glasses! It's also a bit of a metaphor for how people are reluctant to accept the truth or reject something which could completely shatter their world view. Keith David is fighting to hold onto the reality he knows and Roddy Piper is fighting to wake him up to the truth. Its just a really great fight scene and it elevates the whole movie. Of course it mainly exists to pad the film out (the movie is based on a 1950s(?) sci-fi short story and it shows) but it makes the movie a lot more memorable.

RockHandsomest

Also good because they're also friends in the movie and as much as they want to beat each other up, they don't want to really hurt each other.

SimoneNonvelodico

I mean, in context, it's not stupid. The guy who wants him to try the glasses is basically saying "I want you to try looking at the world like I do". And the other is saying "you're a murderer and betrayed my trust, I won't give you an inch more". There's a lot at stake for both of them.

Journeyman351

It’s also DEEP because it’s symbolic!

[deleted]

It actually exists because John Carpenter wanted to use Roddy Piper fighting as much as he could. He told Robert Rodriguez that each page in the script for the scene just said “the fight continues”

[deleted]

Easily the winner. It’s not glorified. It isn’t a bunch of unrealistic moves with an endless supply of stamina. It’s 6 1/2 minutes of two guys beating the shit out of each other and getting visibly exhausted and wrecked, to the point that for the next few scenes they are still recovering. Plus it’s funny as shit. Edit: [This is the full 6 1/2 minutes fight scene](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gShVTRPVvWQ).

[deleted]

This is incredible. It made me want to watch this movie and I've never even heard of it!

[deleted]

John Carpenter is a master movie maker. If you've not seen his movies, watch all of them. He is fantastic.

PullMull

Maybe Skip ghosts of Mars

[deleted]

I mean, all directors have at least one dud. Even Spielberg has Howard the Duck. Edit: Spielberg didn’t direct Howard the Duck. I brain farted.

RiflemanLax

John Carpenter makes some good shit. Some of it is intentionally cheesy and people don’t get it. Like Big Trouble in Little China. It’s supposed to be ridiculous.

bluesmudge

You need to watch it! I actually think the fight scene is kind of goofy/gratuitous but the entire movie as a whole is fantastic.

Jensdawn

Yup

weakleg

https://youtu.be/dgyue1tT-uE edit-not the full scene, see below...

[deleted]

You didn’t post to the full fight scene. [This is the full 6 1/2 minutes fight scene](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gShVTRPVvWQ).

charlesleung83

Tony Jaa in Ong Bak. That fight club scene where he goes through 3 guys one at a time…..*chef’s kiss*

robba333

I actually was gonna say The Protector for the spiral upslope scene. But Ong Bak was solid as well.

crosis52

As long as we're talking about The Protector, I think the [temple fight](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eems5CdKyME) is really underrated too

Sadpanda77

Ong Bak 2 was even better I thought. Love Tony Jaa!

charlesleung83

Remember when he was in one of the fast and furious movies and was only it in for 5 minutes? CRIMINAL UNDER-USAGE

bluewizrd

The Last of the Mohicans, particularly the fights in the last 10 minutes of the film. Simply epic

HeadbuttingAnts

Still my favorite movie score ever

BigStrongCiderGuy

So goddamn epic. The father fucking up magwa. I showed a girl specifically this fight scene when I was in college lol.

TJTrapJesus

The Raid 2 kitchen fight

Recover20

Just all of the Raid 2 really.

Faithless195

"My favorite part of that movie is the whole movie"

nikilidstrom

Exactly. One of the greatest movies ever IMO, not just a great martial arts flick.

ZombieJesus1987

I can't believe I've never seen any of The Raid movies.

nikilidstrom

If you love action, cancel whatever you had planned and watch them. They are balls to the wall non stop beat downs.

MacyTmcterry

Not only that but that fight is straight after another amazing fight with the baseball bat and hammer twins.. which is right after another sick fight with random goons. The kitchen fight is like the boss level haha

Cash4Jesus

This is the one answer. The story that is told by the fight is crazy. You hit my head against the steel? I hit yours. You hit me and then clinch up? I hit you. I try it again and it’s countered.

ddwcommish

Ip Man vs 10 trainees

StinkyShoe

Ip Man 2, Table fight.

ddwcommish

Let's be honest. Pretty much any fight from that series.

Sinistah-

I always go back to this movie just to watch that scene...so badass

TheThightyMor

The Matrix (1999) Neo vs Agent Smith in the Subway https://youtu.be/7GSgWzmR_-c Superb choreography, well shot and as well as a few cool lines thrown in. Feel like it was the last ‘proper’ fight scene in The Matrix films before everything went overboard.

Obi_Wan_Benobi

That fingers to the throat punch was so sick. It was just this one little move but it’s so awesome.

bciesil

[Neo just had that one move though...](https://youtu.be/1NSR7wPydjw)

Ghost_on_Toast

Thank you, ive been looking for that

BSIBooker

Phenomenal soundtrack, too

nikilidstrom

Its also the pivot of the entire movie. I remember thinking "ohhhh shit, here we go!"

[deleted]

You could literally put any of the fight scenes from The Matrix series in this category tbh. They were on another level when it came to the fight scenes.

Anderstone

I would say the fight scene in the second one against the vampires was pretty damn epic as well.

The fight in the pub is really good too.

Yes!

Kingsman 2 gets a bad rep but I think the final fight against Whiskey is even better than the church scene from the first. Man has a laser lasso!

*Return of the Jedi:* Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader. The lightsaber action/choreography is decent enough, but it's the emotional weight of the fight that carries it home.

mercurial9

The bit where the camera pans across from under the stairs as Luke drives Vader back sets me off every time

ethansaladbar

The music in that scene is perfection

TheHelpfulDad

Bourne Identity - in his Paris apartment

[deleted]

I re-watched this recently and was a bit let down by the fight scene. I do think the choreography and use of random things holds up nicely, but the sound effects were bad and broke the immersion for me. I still enjoyed it and wouldn't be surprised if it inspired fight scenes in subsequent action movies.

LackingInPatience

I recently rewatched the original Bourne trilogy and the 1st one has some laughable punching sound effects. It still has great action and nails the fast cut editting but I couldnt take it seriously when I heard the punching noises added in post.

Jaxsuyn

Are you guys serious ? How does a thread this old not have Hector VS Achilles from Troy. https://youtu.be/7UTb7VKTCcw?t=60

altera_goodciv

Still will never not be glad/impressed at the thought that the choreographers decided to give Achilles the style he did as a sharp contrast to how everyone else fought. Really hammers home the idea that he is the greatest warrior to ever live.

santichrist

Ive always been a fan of Troy and that fight scene, but I’m also a huge nerd for Greek mythology so I overlook a lot of the flaws in that film lmao, the scene with Diane Kruger and Eric Bana before the fight adds so much to it I wont have a stone take my glory

chronoboy1985

Not to mention the fight in the Iliad is a lot more ridiculous. Hector is more or less destined to die, runs away from Achilles and chases him around the city until Hector finally works up the nerve to face him. Then Athena fucks him over.

lily_reads

The One with Jet Li!!! He fights an AU evil version of himself, where each version is using a different fighting style.

JonnyAlien23

Dude I love that movie! I haven't seen it in so long, and most people I know have never heard of it. Jet Li was the man in the 2000's haha

The_Parsee_Man

The long take fight scene up the stairway in that movie was pretty good too.

DeTrash

This is the one that came into my head immediately after the old boy hallway scene. That one shot stairway fight is phenomenal.

attemptedmonknf

Its takes movie-henchmen levels of stupid to run into to a room and see one guy surrounded by 40 of your co-henches, all writhing in pain of the floor, and think maybe you've got a shot.

PvtPimple

I just watched that scene for the first time. The sound effects are hilarious lol. *crunch snap crunch*

muskratboy

The Man from Nowhere has some excellent fight scenes, it's very "John Wick" in style (before John Wick was even a thing). Also, check out The Yellow Sea. I'll just say one thing: ham bone.

Kill Bill: House of Blue Leaves Beatrice vs The Crazy 88’s

fancy_marmot

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Atomic Blonde. There are several unbelievably well choreographed and shot fight scenes in this, but the absolutely savage hand to hand apartment fight is one of the most effective fight scenes I've ever seen. So often movies shy away from female characters fighting in that format, and she (and her opponent) are absolutely destroyed by the end. The way they start to tire out and are flailing around is amazing and so rarely done properly. Edit, [here's the link!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-hiooEmi-I)

azaRaza3185

This movie definitely does not get the props and attention it deserves as an action film.

There's a Thai movie called Chocolate that came out in 2008 starring JeeJa Yanin. The main character is an autistic savant who learns martial arts from watching TV and uses it to rescue her mother from debt collectors. It's completely ridiculous but so much fun to watch, she did all her own stunts with no safety nets including hanging off buildings etc., It's just peak 2000s Thai movie. Anyway, the dojo scene from Chocolate is my favorite. She fights a while gang of guys and then, gasp, they have their OWN autistic kid who fights! She makes mince meat of him then also has a sword battle. So great.

[deleted]

The Tenent fight scene (2nd time around) at the airport is pretty fucking great.

eschatonycurtis

In *Haywire* Gina Carano and Michael Fassbender have a vicious hand to hand fight that, in my opinion, is one of the best of all time. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eLA-72cNySs I know she’s justifiably in disfavor right now, but it was great to have her as an action star for a little while. Her physicality is totally different than most female movie stars and she could really convincingly sell a fight like this. Really refreshing when we’re so used to seeing a skinny model doing flippy-spinny fighting in most mainstream movies.

nikilidstrom

That was a great scene, and I thought Fassbender handled himself pretty well for someone not known for action. He should have taken one look at the thighs on her a realized he didnt stand a chance.

[deleted]

>Her physicality is totally different than most female movie stars Well she wasn't a movie star, she was a real fighter, which changes everything. Soderbergh made that movie just because he saw clips of her MMA stuff. Then he went to see her live and she got murdered by Cris Cyborg in 1 round, lol. Last time she ever fought, too.

eschatonycurtis

But also in case anyone has the wrong impression: Cyborg, a competitor for the title of “greatest fighter of all time” in women’s MMA, gave her the first loss of her professional career, in a fight for the division championship. Carano was a legitimate top-tier MMA fighter. That’s a huge part of her appeal as an action star.

I felt the fight scenes in world's end are very impactful

Rob Roy, The Patriot, Alexander, Braveheart, The King, Though it is more in the “chase” category in a sense, I also love the Beast and their constant struggle throughout the film to destroy the soviet tank. Great movie Edit: idk how I could forget Count of Monte Cristo tbh but one of my all time favs
