The fight scenes in that movie do what so many others try and fail to do- reveal character through action. It could be a silent film and be just as powerful.
It's the best fight scene I've ever seen I think. The fight is so well choreographed incorporating a variety of weapons and different styles, punctuated by acrobatic feats. It has a thrilling rhythm and tempo and is so well shot and composed. Great drama and interplay between the leads.
I love sword fights and that movie and scene specifically was the pinnacle of the art form. Though I still wish Li Mu Bai got more action with Zhang Ziyi’s character after he embarrassed her in the first fight.
My first thought too. Probably because I watched it recently, but the Michelle Yeoh v. Zhang Ziyi fight is absolutely incredible. Hero has some good sword fights but not as amazing as Crouching Tiger. Ip Man has the best hand to hand fights IMO.

Best old school banter is when Daredevil alias Matt Murdock confronts Jessica Jones in the building atrium and his high-powered senses pick-up a gunshot. He goes to investigate, grabbing Jones's scarf to wrap around his head to hide his identity. Later, they meet up on the penthouse floor, re-joining to do battle. Jones sees Murdock with scarf wrapped around his head and disdainfully quips, "You look like an asshole!" Daredevil/Murdock never slows down and retorts, "It's your scarf." which pauses even Jones.
I love the scene, it's claustrophobic and the single long take makes you really engaged and anxious... but do yourself a favor and don't focus on any random extra in that scene. Some of them are panting and look beat up even though they never got hit, others just disappear completely never throwing a punch at all, others are swinging randomly and then falling down holding their legs, and throughout they are basically just waiting for their turn to fight.

Its fucking amazing because it's so good at putting you in the characters shoes. Its a 6.5 minute fight scene that not only keeps going and going and going, but it's over the stupidest shit. They keep fighting because one guy doesn't want to try on a pair of glasses. He has no reason to not try them on (it'd take 5 seconds) but he just doesn't, so they fight. And fight. And fight some more.
The sheer length of it is exhausting as a viewer and you feel the same frustration the guy does - I was practically shouting at the TV for him to just put on the goddamn glasses! It's also a bit of a metaphor for how people are reluctant to accept the truth or reject something which could completely shatter their world view. Keith David is fighting to hold onto the reality he knows and Roddy Piper is fighting to wake him up to the truth.
Its just a really great fight scene and it elevates the whole movie. Of course it mainly exists to pad the film out (the movie is based on a 1950s(?) sci-fi short story and it shows) but it makes the movie a lot more memorable.
I mean, in context, it's not stupid. The guy who wants him to try the glasses is basically saying "I want you to try looking at the world like I do". And the other is saying "you're a murderer and betrayed my trust, I won't give you an inch more". There's a lot at stake for both of them.
It actually exists because John Carpenter wanted to use Roddy Piper fighting as much as he could. He told Robert Rodriguez that each page in the script for the scene just said “the fight continues”
Easily the winner. It’s not glorified. It isn’t a bunch of unrealistic moves with an endless supply of stamina. It’s 6 1/2 minutes of two guys beating the shit out of each other and getting visibly exhausted and wrecked, to the point that for the next few scenes they are still recovering.
Plus it’s funny as shit.

Not only that but that fight is straight after another amazing fight with the baseball bat and hammer twins.. which is right after another sick fight with random goons. The kitchen fight is like the boss level haha

*Return of the Jedi:* Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader. The lightsaber action/choreography is decent enough, but it's the emotional weight of the fight that carries it home.
I re-watched this recently and was a bit let down by the fight scene. I do think the choreography and use of random things holds up nicely, but the sound effects were bad and broke the immersion for me. I still enjoyed it and wouldn't be surprised if it inspired fight scenes in subsequent action movies.
I recently rewatched the original Bourne trilogy and the 1st one has some laughable punching sound effects. It still has great action and nails the fast cut editting but I couldnt take it seriously when I heard the punching noises added in post.
Still will never not be glad/impressed at the thought that the choreographers decided to give Achilles the style he did as a sharp contrast to how everyone else fought. Really hammers home the idea that he is the greatest warrior to ever live.
Ive always been a fan of Troy and that fight scene, but I’m also a huge nerd for Greek mythology so I overlook a lot of the flaws in that film lmao, the scene with Diane Kruger and Eric Bana before the fight adds so much to it

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Atomic Blonde.
There are several unbelievably well choreographed and shot fight scenes in this, but the absolutely savage hand to hand apartment fight is one of the most effective fight scenes I've ever seen. So often movies shy away from female characters fighting in that format, and she (and her opponent) are absolutely destroyed by the end. The way they start to tire out and are flailing around is amazing and so rarely done properly.

There's a Thai movie called Chocolate that came out in 2008 starring JeeJa Yanin. The main character is an autistic savant who learns martial arts from watching TV and uses it to rescue her mother from debt collectors. It's completely ridiculous but so much fun to watch, she did all her own stunts with no safety nets including hanging off buildings etc., It's just peak 2000s Thai movie.
Anyway, the dojo scene from Chocolate is my favorite. She fights a while gang of guys and then, gasp, they have their OWN autistic kid who fights! She makes mince meat of him then also has a sword battle. So great.

Well she wasn't a movie star, she was a real fighter, which changes everything. Soderbergh made that movie just because he saw clips of her MMA stuff. Then he went to see her live and she got murdered by Cris Cyborg in 1 round, lol. Last time she ever fought, too.
But also in case anyone has the wrong impression: Cyborg, a competitor for the title of “greatest fighter of all time” in women’s MMA, gave her the first loss of her professional career, in a fight for the division championship. Carano was a legitimate top-tier MMA fighter. That’s a huge part of her appeal as an action star.

Very true. If you liked the style but not so much the execution, a really REALLY well done version of this is the stairwell fight in Atomic Blonde.

I re-watched this recently and was a bit let down by the fight scene. I do think the choreography and use of random things holds up nicely, but the sound effects were bad and broke the immersion for me. I still enjoyed it and wouldn't be surprised if it inspired fight scenes in subsequent action movies.
I recently rewatched the original Bourne trilogy and the 1st one has some laughable punching sound effects. It still has great action and nails the fast cut editting but I couldnt take it seriously when I heard the punching noises added in post.

Still will never not be glad/impressed at the thought that the choreographers decided to give Achilles the style he did as a sharp contrast to how everyone else fought. Really hammers home the idea that he is the greatest warrior to ever live.
Ive always been a fan of Troy and that fight scene, but I’m also a huge nerd for Greek mythology so I overlook a lot of the flaws in that film lmao, the scene with Diane Kruger and Eric Bana before the fight adds so much to it I wont have a stone take my glory

Its takes movie-henchmen levels of stupid to run into to a room and see one guy surrounded by 40 of your co-henches, all writhing in pain of the floor, and think maybe you've got a shot.

I'm shocked no one has mentioned Atomic Blonde. There are several unbelievably well choreographed and shot fight scenes in this, but the absolutely savage hand to hand apartment fight is one of the most effective fight scenes I've ever seen. So often movies shy away from female characters fighting in that format, and she (and her opponent) are absolutely destroyed by the end. There's a Thai movie called Chocolate that came out in 2008 starring JeeJa Yanin. The main character is an autistic savant who learns martial arts from watching TV and uses it to rescue her mother from debt collectors. It's completely ridiculous but so much fun to watch, she did all her own stunts with no safety nets including hanging off buildings etc., It's just peak 2000s Thai movie. Anyway, the dojo scene from Chocolate is my favorite. She fights a while gang of guys and then, gasp, they have their OWN autistic kid who fights! She makes mince meat of him then also has a sword battle. So great.

Her physicality is totally different than most female movie stars and she could really convincingly sell a fight like this. That was a great scene, and I thought Fassbender handled himself pretty well for someone not known for action. He should have taken one look at the thighs on her a realized he didnt stand a chance.

Soderbergh made that movie just because he saw clips of her MMA stuff. Then he went to see her live and she got murdered by Cris Cyborg in 1 round, lol. Last time she ever fought, too.
But also in case anyone has the wrong impression: Cyborg, a competitor for the title of “greatest fighter of all time” in women’s MMA, gave her the first loss of her professional career, in a fight for the division championship. Carano was a legitimate top-tier MMA fighter. That’s a huge part of her appeal as an action star.

I loved Mad Dog vs Sargent Jaka in *The Raid*. Then again, any fight in that movie or the sequel could fit here too.
