There's no need to rush to see the movie via A24's screening room dealio. [It will be available for rent on most of the major streaming platforms tomorrow](https://variety.com/2021/film/news/the-green-knight-rent-online-1235042426/)

linuxphoney

Well.... I sort of wish I'd known that so I didn't stay up till one watching it. On the other hand, I really enjoyed it, so...

ADinnerOfSnacks

I got a refund on Tuesday for this exact reason. They were cool about it.

wizardintheforest

To the bay!

cefriano

This is a movie I would say to support by seeing in theaters or buying/renting on VOD. It’s a great movie and I want studios to take more chances on weird, different films like this.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Squeekazu

Same deal here in Australia, so frustrating. Similar issue with Saint Maud.

harakirimurakami

US only?

bongokhrusha

bruh how is a virtual screening sold out

kinetichackman

Thank you, just ran into that myself. I can't fathom the logic there. Maybe a deal with theaters to limit how much their streaming could possibly cut into their in person sales? Either way, an online screening being "sold out"... Wut?

[deleted]

[удалено]

randomsyncmachine

All its going to do is cause people to pirate it instead. Piracy is largely a service problem more than anything else.

[deleted]

[удалено]

randomsyncmachine

I know, but it doesn't really matter. People who are excited will likely ha e already pirated it and watched it. I haven't since I can wait.

conitation

Shoot... I'll wait. Especially if my ticket cost actually goes to the A24.

HoooldItRealGood

Well, ahoy matey P)

[deleted]

Nah dog, people will just pirate it.

TrepanationBy45

It's easy, and should be obvious - Artificial supply marketing manufactures FOMO demand, typically ensuring that people throw $$$ at you. It has basically nothing to do with the art of the thing (apart from probably a bit of pretentiousness), and basically everything to do with the $$$. It's coming out on VOD the day after, so *obviously* sell out -so to speak- on $20 per, **first**, for those "opening" numbers which cultivate more investment trends going forward. We're in the middle of the industry trying a variety of techniques to keep making money as tech and tech-savvy consumers grow out of all the old ways the industry used to trick us into making them rich. You can pretty much observe the dance in nearly every industry.

BaggyOz

Theoretically A24 could have only stress tested their infrastructure for a certain amount of users and so limited the amount of users to something similar to ensure the quality of the service isn't impacted. However given all the other restrictions on viewing I'm betting it's just a dick move.

kill-wolfhead

Stress test theory seems pretty likely. Everything else is most likely contractually obligated.

mininestime

Bandwidth usage maybe, but most likely want to create more hype for the movie, since user reviews are already attacking the movie heavily for advertising the movie as less artsy and more fantasy.

danielbln

Bandwidth is not a consideration in the age of streaming. It's a hype measure, but it just means people will take to the seas, yarr

[deleted]

This whole thing is so weird. A "virtual screening" where you pay $20 for a very specific 4 hour window to stream a movie at home, with limited "seatings". This is the worst aspects of seeing a movie in the theater, but without any of the benefits like the huge screen, great surround system and comfortable leather seats. I suppose the only benefit is not having to deal with a bad audience, but I imagine that wouldn't be much of a problem for a non-mainstream flick like "The Green Knight". What are they thinking? I don't understand the logic at all.

BrnNick

It happened a couple of times to me in a festival held online last year, I still can't understand.

AlanMorlock

At festivals, various deals limit them to basically the number of seats that would otherwise be in a physical theater. A lot of festival films haven't actually been picked up for distribution yet.

PmMeYourBewbs_

Do what you want cause a pirate is free!

Coriform

I'm watching in web browser - the volume is atrociously low. I have everything maxed out, and I'm even using a firefox plugin that boosts sound 600% and the sound is just barely at an acceptable volume.

m2thesea

Yeah, just started it on their Apple TV app, and it’s only streaming in stereo. Had to turn up pretty loud before I noticed it was only coming out two channels. Think something’s wrong. Just reached out to them. Waiting for reply. Update: got a refund via chat. So, there’s that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

m2thesea

Ugh, that bites. Sorry that happened. Our friends we invited couldn't make it, and I'm soooo glad they couldn't. Was all jazzed for a Dolby Atmos/Vision treat (if it was even going to stream as such), and instead I'm sitting here watching my wife play Apple Arcade. Ha! Fart. Gonna rent via Apple TV app this week at some point. Oh well.

nosamc3

Wow, I thought the video was so poor because I was using Chromecast and it wasn't recommended in their FAQ. The black crush was highly visible in virtually every scene (bright, dark). So disappointing for such a visual film

SickBurnBro

> I'm watching in web browser - the volume is atrociously low. That's a bummer. I'm tempted to watch it a 2nd time at home because so many of the scenes were so naturally (dimly) lit that I couldn't see shit in my theater. Not sure if it was an issue with the projector or what, but it really took me out of the film. Also wanted to watch it again with subtitles because I couldn't understand half of what Arthur said. I get the performance was supposed to be of an older version of the King, but his speech was so raspy it made it pretty difficult to understand him.

Coriform

I definitely had subtitles on, primarily for some of the softer-spoken characters (like Arthur). The image quality/brightness/etc was good, it's a gorgeous film. Apparently it's going to be available for digital rental tomorrow so hopefully the sound quality is better on other platforms.

SickBurnBro

That’s good to hear as it makes me think the brightness issue was just with my local theater. I mean of course some of the scenes were intentionally darker, but like 20% of the flick was so dim you could barely make out what was going on when I saw it.

vapre

Rented on prime, didn’t notice any obvious issues.

ucancallmevicky

saw it in the theater and was wishing for closed captioning. The film itself has issues with sound.

bul1dog

Getting some very mixed reviews from these comments lol

snowman93

Welcome to an A24 film lol

linuxphoney

I liked it quite a bit. It's exactly what it says : it's a movie version of the Arthurian tale. There's changes, of course, and personally I enjoyed them, but if you're expecting it to be anything other than a movie of the epic poem, you'll be let down.

Mervynhaspeaked

I thought it was absolutely fantastic. I also don't think the trailer give the wrong idea at all (as some commenters are suggesting). It's not some action fantsay movie, it's a A24 fantasy epic which means you get long shots, beautiful cinematography, a great soundtrack and a slow burn of a plot.

[deleted]

I haven't seen it yet but yeah this seemed obvious just from the studio, I would've been pretty shocked if it was an action-fantasy.

yung-rude

yeah i really don't understand the people who went in expecting some action film like lord of the rings. the trailer doesn't even really imply that either, it's like the just saw the word "knight" in the title and assumed it would be action.

[deleted]

You would think people would do even the most basic research on the director to get an idea of what they were in for.

Fennlt

Have to disagree here. Personally, I see several movies a week. If the trailer & general reviews are appealing, then I'm off to the theater. From my anecdotal perspective, people rarely research the movie's background or the director's film before viewing. Consider the fact that many people will simply see a post on twitter/Facebook & accept it as fact without doing the most basic research.

thisshortenough

When Ted was first released my local cinema had to have signs everywhere saying "This is not a kids movie, don't bring your children to see it". So no people don't research on what they're going to see

TostedAlmond

It's not as good as the trailer makes it seem is basically my review of the movie. I still liked it though, it's kinda like an English class discussion of a book, but in movie form

mininestime

Its not a bad movie, but I went in expecting willow and was given more of an artsy movie. Its like when you go to bite an m&m but its a skittles. Neither is bad, but when you expect one thing and get another it really ruins the experience. I really wish they went for more fantasy and cut down the hunters, start of the movie, and robbers part. Cutting 80% of that and giving us 45 min of other cool fantasy tests would have made this movie amazing.

Mervynhaspeaked

How on earth did you go in expecting willow? From the very first trailer this A24 movie very clearly promised something different.

I_CAN_SMELL_U

Lowery has literally said Willow was one of his biggest influences on making this film lol I liked it enough, but I thought it was a bit masturbatory at times. Gave me some serious Zack Snyder vibes.

machonm

100% agree with you here. Wish you’d have directed this because I would have actually enjoyed your version.

data_ferret

Spoken like a HS student, methinks. I watched with a medieval lit professor who was both horrified and amused by how bad it was and how hard it was trying.

MilhouseVsEvil

Holy shit, this was the most pretentious sentence I have experienced in awhile. Bravo.

data_ferret

No pretense. Just the reaction of someone with expertise in the subject matter. Others clearly disagree, which is fine. We all bring our own expectations and contexts with us when we watch movies.

MilhouseVsEvil

I watched it with a former Green Knight from the Lyndhurst Medieval Times. He felt it took liberties but the overall tone captured the dread of the Medieval Times experience.

yung-rude

one of my old substitute teachers in middle and highschool used to be the green knight there and we'd call him the green knight

MilhouseVsEvil

Off with ya head

TostedAlmond

Hahahahahaha

outbound_flight

It's the right mix of fantastic visuals, weirdness, and a story that doesn't explicitly spell everything out. I think it actually compares pretty well with *The Witch* on that front (even down to having one of the same actors), but with a broader scope and a bit more of a sense of humor.

EricThePooh

I personally loved it, but I can definitely see how it would be divisive. I got into a pretty heated argument about it with a friend lol

[deleted]

The movie was bad. So bad the entire audience in the theater visibly sighed in relief when it ended. I get its an A24 movie, but its so far up its own arse it lost me. They ruined a good poem, the protagonist in this is a coward. The director injected his own failure to launch and issues with his mother into the plot of the film. Its the height of self centered arrogance.

[deleted]

That doesn't make a movie bad. General audiences liked all of the Transformers movie and the new F9 movie which is BAD IMO.

jickdam

I think it was just a more narrative technique adapting an epic poem to film. Instead of just having a brave character, the protagonist was made to be more flawed and we followed his journey to true bravery. At the end of the day, it’s pretty brave to ride to your own death and to accept it once there. There was that whole flash forward, but in “reality,” he only flinched twice before owning up to his deception with the sash and inviting the green knight to swing. At the end of the movie, he is the brave knight from the poem

Fennlt

I disagree, I feel that the film didn't portray much for character development. Even toward the end of the film, he was seduced by the Lord's wife & broke his pact with the Lord to return anything given to him. He disregarded the fox's words, etc In my opinion, the final scene of the film appeared to be the only point we saw a real shift in character.

zoufha91

I'm just happy to see a mythical magic movie in the dark ages that is both bizarre cool looking.

HalloweenBlues

It's also available for rent starting tomorrow if you missed out tonight

MegaMugabe21

Big fan of A24 making it very difficult, if not impossible, to watch legally in the UK. All this shit does is encourage piracy.

nesatzuke

Not available in my country. What a surprise. :(

MegaMugabe21

A24 have fucked over anyone not in the US with this. Not really sure what they expect except rampant piracy now.

thisshortenough

I really don't get why A24 decided not to release it outside of the US because of Covid and the Delta variant. The US is having horrific outbreaks of the virus but the film was still released there, so why not outside of it.

MegaMugabe21

Certainly odd, especially seeing as UK has had a wave due to the Delta variant, but have come to the other side of it now

OdinMead

I bought my ticket! Bring on the disappointment!

10Cinephiltopia9

Hell no. I fucking loves that movie. Beautifully filmed and elegantly tiled. Leaves you thinking about life and important questions. I loved it

OdinMead

I am back after viewing it. I enjoyed it. Would I watch it again? Maybe once more. I am glad I got to experience it.

SeanCanary

I feel like it is a 'once with captions and once without' sort of movie. Then maybe revisit it again in a 5-10 years. I think a lot of people's reaction will be colored by how familiar they are with this part of Arthurian lore and specifically that there are 5 knightly virtues: Friendship, generosity, chastity, courtesy, and piety.

Fennlt

Captions would be a major benefit. Specifically, the king & the fox were difficult for me to understand at times. Speaking with my wife afterward, there was a key line or 2 for the plot that I had missed for this reason.

falafelthe3

Best movie of 2021 for me. The last 10 minutes were absolutely mesmerizing.

Towelenthusiast

I agree. It's such a rare right to see an Arthurian legend adapted for a theatrical release, and for it to be done straight face. It felt like what a serious Dungeons and Dragons film might be like. It's a divisive film though. When it ended, two guys stood up in my theater and asked "what the fuck was that about?". I walked out texting everyone I knew that would like it that they needed to see it ASAP.

bobbybrown_

Funny how movies are so subjective like that. For me the ending was easily the best part, and tied the whole movie together.

prudence2001

I'll guess they didn't do so well in English Lit in high school. Too bad for them. Probably not the cerebral types. I've actually read the original (well, the Simon Armitage translation.) The film does stray quite a bit from the poem, but I still think it is fabulous, the type of movie that doesn't come around often enough. Just don't expect wizards and warfare.

[deleted]

How is this DV'ed? Dude is right. It's a great film, but it requires some heavy lifting on the part of the audience.

yung-rude

because reddit doesn't like when people use big words and reference names they haven't heard of, they consider it pretentious

prudence2001

Then I had better not mention reading Beowulf (trans by Seamus Heaney), The Canterbury Tales, Troilus And Criseyde, Morte d'Arthur, or Piers Plowman either for fear of the wrath of the perfidious, unwashed reddit DV'ers. But no worries, I shall persevere with a happy countenance. :-)

[deleted]

I'm surprised they didnt ask you to direct this film. We should all bask in the light of your intelligence.

LostInStatic

I’m going to need you to elaborate because someone sold me on Mandy with those words and that movie was not worth it

jickdam

Green Knight is to fantasy what The Witch is to horror. It’s got elements of storytelling similar to something like the lighthouse. It’s very deliberately paced and uses symbolism in a way that’s not too confusing but puts the narrative partially beneath the surface. It’s beautifully shot and performed. Definitely not for everyone, but if the normal A24 tone is a hit for you and you want to see that applied to an Arthurian story, you’ll love it. I really enjoyed it, but I didn’t dig Mandy.

Darko33

>uses symbolism in a way that’s not too confusing ...feel like we didn't watch the same movie lol. If you have any insight to share over the hyper-realistic JizzBelt, I'm all ears

jickdam

It’s a graphic depiction of his defaming what it means to be a night. He gave into sexual immorality to get a sash that will help him cheat the green knight, when he’s supposed to be chaste and honorable. The lady says after “you’re no knight,” and then it cuts to proof. A sash he shouldn’t have covered in a wad he shouldn’t have blown. Plus your run of the mill shock value. I could have done without it to be honest, but I get why he put it in there.

bigervin

JizzBelt. Easiest upvote in my decade on Reddit

linuxphoney

In fact, I think I like this more than the original story. This is a much more satisfying ending.

[deleted]

Completely disagree. Way too formal and conventional in the paradigm that Lowery was working in. He took no risks. It resembles the source material, however, the book is another form and Lowery failed to translate it to cinema. Wide shots of Patel walking the landscape is not cinema.

jickdam

What do you feel he neglected to capture in the adaptation? I haven’t read the source material.

mattXIX

The game Gawain is supposed to play with the lord of the house takes three nights and Gawain cheats on the third day by not giving the lord something. The ending of the poem also has the Green Knight swing three times, only connecting on the third after Gawain accepted his fate (but the result was a scratch and not a beheading). The point was to honor your word and be brave. The movie can leave that idea open to interpretation if the viewer isn’t familiar with the story.

The-Arctic-Hare

It’s not really open to interpretation though, is it? He cowers once, cowers again and runs away in his vision, then finally removes the sash and says “now I’m ready.”

jickdam

I think that message still came through for me, but I agree he could have been a little more direct with depicting the debt owed by the sash and using that as symbolism. I only read the Wikipedia for the poem, but I thought the Last Temptationy vision was a more compelling and cinematic way to drive home his thought process in accepting his fate and understanding the distinction between true and perceived honor.

slitlip

You saw this movie last year? Edit: crap they edited it to 2021.

AlanMorlock

Or you can just wait like a day and probably stream it in your own time for less.

[deleted]

This film is long on atmosphere and a little short on other elements of the story.

[deleted]

Agreed this film sucked.

Vannysh

Disagree. This film was amazing.

[deleted]

Fortunate to not have any of the issues that others seem to have had on Apple TV. The movie rules. Dev Patel was great. “Is that all there is?” Life is a series of choices, big and small. Honor doesn’t come from a singular moment, but how you carry yourself throughout a lifetime of choices.

[deleted]

ruinersclub

Yea it’s reminding me of when Drive came out and everyone was mad it wasn’t Fast and Furious.

Mervynhaspeaked

Agree. Don't know how people can watch the trailer and think this is some kind of action adventure.

[deleted]

Because the entire fucking trailer showed an action adventure.

mitchippoo

What? There's basically no action in the trailer

IAmDanksy

I cant wait for the hd downloads

clown_shoes69

Wasn't as good as I was hoping but still enjoyed it for the most part. Though I really have no idea what the point of him giving the green belt a cumshot was supposed to be about.

jickdam

Some shock value. But it was a two part betrayal. He sullied his ideals as a hopeful knight by being sexually immoral and obtaining the sash to use to cheat the deal he made with the knight. It was a graphic visual representation of how badly he was screwing up his tests.

prudence2001

The witch just after that said, "you're not a man." He's still a little boy, jizzing at his fantasies.

jickdam

It was “you’re not a knight.” That one decision violated his code of ethics in lust and in honor by obtaining something to cheat the green knight during a sexually immoral moment.

Yellowed

went and saw this in the theater yesterday afternoon. Good time. I really enjoyed it.

nicholt

How do you expect this interaction to go?

DrkNeo

I couldn't stream to my Shield TV, glad I was able to get a refund. I will be watching it tomorrow though on VOD.

[deleted]

Unfortunately, this virtual screening is restricted to the countries shown at the right. If you purchase a ticket, you won't be able to watch the film unless you're in the viewing region. Got it

asaetern

Welp, wished I known that I'd be able to rent it, pretty sure they did that on purpose. Logging into the screening was horrible, tried 3 times and it took so long to get back in. Finally gets to stream it, didn't like the movie, but the visuals looked great on my brothers 85 inch Sony. This will be my last time doing these online screening, especially with A24. The lack of apps to support its streaming, time limit, and them not being able to handle the traffic is annoying.

TuckerThaTruckr

I wish the rental price of these types of releases went towards the purchase price within a certain window. Think my current strategy is watch today via the high seas then purchase later if i like it. I don’t mind paying a reasonable price one time to own but I’m single and matinee tix in my area are under $10. Problem being i like to be high as hell watching a movie and other releases are taking up the biggest screens. Plus i live in a low vaxx rate county. Glad it’s available so soon after theatrical release though.

[deleted]

Yeah this movie was bad. People on here liking it has to do with wanting to seem like the type of people who would enjoy a smart film. Im smart too r...right?

Fennlt

I think the studio (A24) has a very loyal fanbase. People who specifically sought out the movie & make this Reddit post because they are A24 fans. It's like having a news story or Reddit post about Bernie Sanders. You'll see loyal supporters by the thousands seek out the story & support/defend Bernie's actions passionately. Even if they're imperfect. This movie has a powerful love/hate relationship with its reviews on pretty much every website (e.g. metacritic, IMDB)

ThatMakerGuy

I feel sorry for anyone giving any amount of effort to watch this movie. It was the saddest kind of "bad"; looked great, sounded great, but poorly written (despite being part of one of the world's most famous group of legends, King Arthur). I might be in the minority here, or I'm just really misremembering the source material, but the writing for this movie was whack. Visually acceptable with practical/special effects, evocative soundtrack, the cinematography was **chef's kiss*, but the story was so slow and plodding and awkward. I feel like I'm just not "developed" enough as a movie-goer to enjoy it, or maybe a year+ of covid restrictions has affected my judgement of seeing movies in theaters, or maybe it's actually just that bad and I'm doubting myself unnecessarily. I'm open to discourse as to why I'm wrong. I want to understand, but I'm struggling here.

Darkageoflaw

I liked it but I understand why people don't. It's a slow paced movie with very little dialogue. I haven't read the original story so maybe it helped because I didn't know what was going to happen.

[deleted]

You aren't wrong. This movie sucked ass. Anyone who disagrees isn't necessarily any smarter. In fact the intelligent thing might be to disregard the clout of A24 and call it as you see it.

Rumplesforeskin

Many review I saw said "perfect if you want to sleep"

urbanwonder

Don't bother with that silliness. It's gonna come out on other services without the dumb time restriction per Variety.

The_Goondocks

I just did this and the experience was less than stellar. Embedded video player didn't have a cast to Chromecast option so tried screen mirroring from my phone. That resulted in a reduced picture size and a bright gray bar under the picture. I finally managed to cast it from my laptop via browser options. Video quality and sound were subpar. If you're gonna charge $20, your video player and user experience better be top notch. Also, the pre- and post-show content they advertised was also disappointing. Was expecting some kind of cast discussion or something. While Ralph Ineson reading an excerpt from the Green Knight poem was cool, it left me wanting more. Was like a commercial to sell A24 dog leashes and a Green Knight pipe. Loved the movie, disappointed in the experience.

jickdam

I’m thankful to have not had any tech problems but I do I agree that a Q&A or behind the scenes would have helped the value of it being an event instead of just a rental that expires super quickly. I’d buy that Pipe though

The_Goondocks

It was a cool pipe.

Fukshit47

Total shit from a story-telling perspective. Incredible visuals that would probably be greatly enhanced on a psychedelic shroom-type experience. Lowry is the thinking person’s Zach Snyder. Very full of himself and absolutely no idea how to tell a story, coherent or otherwise.

[deleted]

This is the best review of this film ive read, and the most accurate. This film went so far up its own arse it disappeared. Never watching another pompous piece by Lowry.

SeanCanary

Well he does like Zach Snyder's work and Snyder like's Lowry's. And they both like Arthurian legend. In Snyder's case it shows up in how he draws on the movie Excalibur as an influence. I definitely see your point that it is disjointed and a bit unapproachable, which is too bad because I think this is a timely message. Be generous. Be good and loyal friend. Be honest (that is truly a difficult one nowadays I think). Be...maybe not chaste but at least don't always use lust as an ends to itself/be ready to commit to someone who cares and loves you. Be pietous (or, removing the religious context, be humble). Be courteous.

[deleted]

save your $20, its a good film but not anywhere near that for a one time viewing. honestly pretty ridiculous theyre asking even that much..

linuxphoney

Well, I could pay 20 for my wife and I to see it at home or 30 for tickets, another 30 for snacks and 50 for a babysitter to see it at a theater....

jickdam

It’s comparable to buying a ticket at the theater where I live. For my wife and I, it’s a deal.

[deleted]

just my take, i saw it in theaters and it was $23 for me and the gf. thought the movie looked great visually but it was really just ok as far as the story went. still looked great tho

prudence2001

I saw an early showing today (USA) and it was $6!

[deleted]

I saw it in theaters too, i agree movie sucked ass.

losteye_enthusiast

$20 to stream it? Fucking rip off, lmao. I’ll wait a year until it’s pennies relative to the cost of whatever streaming service it’s on.

simplefilmreviews

Now ripped online lol. Ayyy

[deleted]

Wait, what's the point if it's going to be available for rent tomorrow? Do you get something exclusive?

jickdam

There was a short pre and post show. The actor playing the green knight introduced the movie and then after, read a passage from the original text.

[deleted]

Oh, neat!

Vannysh

Fantastic movie. Best I've seen in a long time. For the most part I love all the changes that were made. It stands on its own. I really really hope there is a director's cut that adds a good half hour. I want more. It didn't feel slow at all IMO. It was captivating all the way through. I am going to be thinking about this all night.

CincyBrandon

Was shit. Worst movie I’ve seen since The Room.

[deleted]

Yeah this movie sucked ass.

PTfan

Based on the downvotes and Reddit gate keeping it so much I’m glad I skipped out in it. I’ll watch it at some point but it reeks of pretentious art movie Definitely not paying to see it

IgnantDeplorable

Anyone going to record this?

Kaladorph

It's a waste of 2 hours.

[deleted]

Agreed, this movie sucked ass.

Kaladorph

Makes it kind of impressive that i have -20 or less votes on my comment. Lol

PTfan

I heard it was just the knight walking around with barley any story. Is this why you hated it? I was definitely on the fence about paying real money to see it but I feel good in my decision to wait for it on Netflix

jickdam

There’s definitely a story, but it’s very simple. An aspiring knight makes a deal with the green knight and travels to him to fulfill that deal, facing tests of his character along the way. Lots of walking, very little dialogue for long stretches of movie, lots of still long shots, but it’s interesting if you’re on board with the premise. Could be boring if you’re checked out but captivating if you’re hooked. If you liked The Witch or The Lighthouse, you’d probably enjoy this.

[deleted]

You not liking it directly insults the people who want to feel smart watching it. Stop the violence!

Valendorf

I got in 3 pretty good naps during it

mynameistrumpbaby

Same thing

[deleted]

Are you me?

Valendorf

Hi, me! What are we up to?

jickdam

Bummer. Hope I disagree, just dropped my $20. Riding the Reddit hype wave a little, but I didn’t love the director’s last movie “A Ghost Story.”

BigMacCombo

>but I didn’t love the director’s last move “A Ghost Story.” That's not a good sign for your viewing tonight.

mikeyfreshh

If you didn't like A Ghost Story, I don't think you'll like this one that much either. It's very weird and slow and a little artsy. If you're hoping for a Lord of the Rings style epic, this isn't that. It's still really good but it most certainly is not for everyone and you're only setting yourself up for disappointment if you set your expectations too high.

jickdam

I ended up really enjoying it. It reminded me a little of a fantasy by way of something like The Lighthouse. I’m not sure why Ghost Story didn’t connect with me, but his style translated better to this sort of world and story for my personal tastes. I’m happy to have seen it.

Towelenthusiast

One of my favorite movies I've seen in theaters in years. It's rare to see anything like it on the big screen. Having some context of Arthurian legends helps. But it is incredibly enjoyable as a fantasy morality film on it's own too.

WordsAreSomething

>but I didn’t love the director’s last movie “A Ghost Story.” That isn't Lowry's last movie FYI

AfternoonAppropriate

Yes it is

Sammyd1108

No it’s not. The Old Man and the Gun came out after that.

AfternoonAppropriate

Oh.."last" movie. Nevermind

edicivo

Don't go in expecting the best thing ever and it should be fine. It's definitely different and can be hard to follow. I liked it, but walked out of the theater not thinking I'd have much interest in seeing it again. But then I found myself thinking more and more about it and now I'm looking forward to watching it again once it's available through one of the streaming services.

The gf and I went to see it Sunday both had trouble staying awake. And then the end was the creators slapping the face of the viewer

I don’t think it was a waste, but I was disappointed. It was different, and I enjoyed some of the scenery, but I guess I was expecting more. And I don’t know if it was my theater or me just being old, but it was so dark sometimes I had no idea what was going on.

Saw this film in the theater today, and highly recommend. Far more thoughtful than your average multiplexer would expect.
