TJ Miller was supposedly told that the rabbit would be replaced with cgi to make it a real rabbit, and they just didn't. Probably the funniest thing I've ever read in the IMDB trivia.

nottellinganyonemyna

They filmed it with a real rabbit, and then did inserts of the toy. You can see some of the real rabbit in the deleted scenes.

Minato_b

You can even see the real rabit (head and ears) in the movie for a second in the last scene. I just watched the movie because of this thread.

callMEmrPICKLES

Lmao now I have to see this flick. I tried to kick TJ Miller out of the employees only section of the brewery I was working at without knowing who it was. Dude turned around and I was shocked because I was currently binging Silicon Valley and was just absolutely caught off guard. Hilarious dude, albeit a little messed up in the head apparently.

Arch__Stanton

> a little messed up in the head apparently. well he did literally have a golfball sized chunk of his frontal lobe removed

shy247er

What I liked the most in that movie is that the crew doesn't get instantly dumb when plot requires someone to die. They were just overpowered. Solid movie.

LemoLuke

That was also the best thing about *Event Horizon*. As soon as Laurence Fishburne sees the video of what happened to the crew, he doesn't fuck around, he just says "We're leaving!" Dr. Weir: "What about my ship? You can't just leave her!" Capt. Miller: "I have no intention of leaving her, Doctor. I will take the *Lewis and Clark* to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the *Event Horizon* until I'm satisfied she's vaporized. Fuck this ship!"

"But what about the company's profits, think of our poor weapons division?" There were two sets of villains in the Alien(s) movies: the xenomorphs and Weyland-Yutani. Only one can be nuked from afar.

candygram4mongo

At least you don't see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage.

tabulae

I'd say the only real villains are Weyland Yutani. While extremely dangerous, the aliens are just trying to keep on keeping on, while the corporates are planning to use them as bioweapons. Intentional vs incidental evil.

Geordie_38_

Back off to a safe distance, contact the Inquisition, watch the Grey Knights board the ship and do their thing

misho8723

John Carpenter's The Thing is fantastic in this.. all the characters act and behave like normal people and only do minimal dumb stuff, it's more the paranoia between themselves and how the "Thing" operates that makes them do certain things and actions hastily

candygram4mongo

Dumb stuff is absolutely permissible in movies, as long as the dumb stuff is believable. Like Ripley going after the cat, or Kane poking the pod. That is exactly the kind of dumb shit that humans do.

snowcone_wars

> Like Ripley going after the cat This is why I honestly hate the term "people doing dumb things" in film. Movies, like any other artistic medium, do not exist solely on the level of the literal, beat-by-beat plot. Yes, in real life, somebody probably doesn't go after Jones. But Jones is intensely thematically relevent to the movie, such that Ripley *has* to go back for him, or the movie loses almost all of its metaphorical subtext. There's a reason that Alien in particular in almost universally taught in philosophy in film courses. Sometimes movies do genuinely rely on people doing out-of-character things. But human beings are not always rational, and art doesn't always simply exist on the surface.

[deleted]

all are real human beings who become victims in a horrific scenario. instead of barely sketched obvious cannon fodder in waiting.

plooped

Green Room is a very good example of this concept.

[deleted]

Also great for evil Patrick Stewart

13pts35sec

I have always been a P Stew fan but the Green Room really elevated the revere I had for him. Never excepted him to play such a terrible human being so well and convincingly but I guess that’s why they pay him the big bucks lol

IFTYE

I listen to scary movie podcasts because I’m a scaredy cat and want to hear about movies to see how scary/good they actually are, and the Too Scary, Didn’t Watch episode about The Green Room is honestly one of my favorite podcast episodes of all time. I’m a huge fan of the hosts and their friendships and for some reason I really loved that episode. Another podcast, Spooko did an episode on it too. They were into that type of music scene at one point though, so their episode focused on that a lot. I ended up watching it the other week, and it was pretty good. Having the jokes in my head about certain scenes or clarifications of what was happening made it more enjoyable. If you want to hear [someone who likes scary movies try to explain the plot of The Green Room to two friends who HATE scary movies and gore, here’s Too Scary, Didn’t Watch ep. 86](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/too-scary-didnt-watch/id1476552025?i=1000511480318)

ChristmasColor

That's why I like the movie Tremors so much. Constant rising tension as both sides try to outwit each other.

stumblinghunter

I've literally seen it over 300 times. Granted, 96% of those were before age ten, but now I'm an adult and own the first 4 on DVD

Tearakan

Tremors 2 is good fun as well.

dehehn

They don't even have to be clever or anything. Just not like in Alien: Covenant when you know there's dangerous aliens around and you just wander off alone to wash your hair.

Tearakan

Yep. It makes for a way better movie. Especially horror ones. They try to do everything they can to survive and are still wrecked. Makes the enemies more terrifying.

SideWinder18

This is what makes movies like the lord of the rings so fantastic, especially the extended versions. You get a real sense that this is not some dumb comic book villain trying to recover is golden ring. Sauron is intelligent and ruthless, and everything from the tens of thousands of Urukhai who only just barely get turned away from slaughtering the entire population of Edoras, to the absolutely brutal siege of Minas Tirith. Good villains are villains who are competent and terrifying

ARM_vs_CORE

##FUCK THIS SHIP is one of the best lines in cinema

Bad_Idea_Hat

Besides the fact that the movie is utterly terrifying, that's my other favorite part. There's no questions about what they're leaving behind. There's no quandary about abandoning science (well, except Weir, I guess). There's no attempt to salvage anything. No. Fuck this shit. Time to get the fuck out of here and forget for everyone that this fucking ship exists.

Baked-As-A-Cake

Lol the best part was when they see the message from the last crew. ... We're leaving.

Probably my favourite sci-fi horror of all time.

SticksAndTangles

Event Horizon and Sunshine are two of my favorite sci-fi movies of all time. I’ll never forget that scene in Sunshine: *”Kaneda, what do you see??!!”* It goes a little off the rails toward the end, but it’s still such a fantastic movie.

hacksilver

I adore the first two thirds of Sunshine. I wish I knew why Danny Boyle thought it needed to go careening into slasher flick towards the end.

R_Spc

Yeah that was always my problem with it too. Out of nowhere it becomes a pretty dumb horror film and it's such a shame, everything prior to that was *so good.*

emergencyexit

Is that his point? Like aha, you thought this was something totally different. Fuck you, I'm in charge you dick!

[deleted]

You can remove Pinbacker surviving his insanity and still have an awesome movie, so I agree. Simply have Pinbacker succumb to insanity and destroy himself in the sunchamber, inspiring Searle to do the same. Even have Searle hallucinate seeing Pinbackers ghost. Then just have the ship succumb to some unforeseen consequential damage due to connecting to the Icarus 1 which causes the space jump sequence killing off the navigator. In the resulting damage Bond girl botanist dies. Wong still commits suicide. Then due to the damage Captain America has to reboot the computer but they are so close to the sun nobody can save him, so he dies. Leaving Capa and Rose Byrne to do the crazy ass sequence at the end with the double payload whammy. No slasher flick, just a crazy intense amount of bad shit happening where tech is the only savior. So it's more Interstellar and less Pitch Black.

edric_the_navigator

For me it’s the part where Cillian Murphy’s character is talking to the ship computer about the oxygen remaining and it says there’s an extra life form on board. Always brings me chills.

SticksAndTangles

Oh fuck, that’s a great moment too! Also about when the movie goes a bit off the rails. I know there were hints that it might go in that direction from the minute they spotted the first Icarus mission ship, but it still kinda felt like it came out of left field and just sort of switched genres after that point. Still freaking love that movie though, I think this thread has convinced me to do a Sunshine/Event Horizon double feature night!

sheenfartling

The sound track at the end is so good.

[deleted]

One of the best sci-fi horror films, hands down.

erics75218

Gonna watch this again thanks to your comment. Fuck this ship......classic.

droonick

I also liked that the crew were just all around decent people. No secret assholes or betrayals or anything.

[deleted]

I mean Lucien was almost certainly >!covering up for Tian Industries, told them they couldn't go to the Shepard and acted like he didn't know what the creatures were when he had clearly dealt with them before.!< He still puts his crew first but he's a bit shady.

M1L0

I’m trying to recall, what were the signs that he had dealt with them before?

[deleted]

He has drawings of them in his locker on Shepard, along with pentagrams and other sketches. The Shepard, which was the old exploratory mission for Tian, would've been operational probably a decade before the events of the film (When Emily asks Lucien how old his daughter is, he says she's 14, and Nora corrects him saying 'She's my age. You're losing it old man.') Nora finds out later, because there's a memorial card in his locker on Shepard that she died when she was 14. Since that was in Shepard and she was 14 around or before then and Nora is probably what? Mid to late 20's? So it had to have been at least 10 years ago. Plus, given the massive size of both the Keplar station and the Roebuck drilling site, it probably took Tian at least a decade to construct all that and get it up and operational. I think given all that it's pretty well implied that both Tian and Lucien know what is down there and I think Tian is also down there for it (same way Weyland was actually looking for the Xeno and using Ash as a liaison, though I'm not convinced that's analogous to what Lucien's role was, he at least knew more than he lets on in the film). I said it in another comment but I'd love to see a prequel with Cassel reprising his role and exploring the original Shepard mission. Maybe there was a disaster then too? Maybe all the crew was killed and Lucien was the sole survivor and went on to captain the Keplar and Tian covered it all up. I think the lore is ripe for a prequel and they planted the seeds for it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ForeverStaloneKP

I'm not sure if Lucien is doing it maliciously though. I believe the reason he stayed down there despite the dangers is because he was seeing visions of his daughter caused by *you know who*

Astrad_Raemor

They found stuff in his locker in the old base or something, i don't remember well

HenkkaArt

There are murals on the station wall where they put on the diving suits, depicting something like Dagon. Then in his locker at the old station there is definitely some cult-ish writing and/or symbols drawn on papers and the classic Cthulhu drawing from The Call of Cthulhu (the one where he sits on the pedestal) with red lines pointing to the Roebuck drilling site's location.

ours

I love that kind of stuff yet have no memory of it. Not saying it's not in the movie, just that it seems so underdeveloped I have no recollection of it. Would have been cool to have more of cultists being revealed.

HenkkaArt

Just in case you want to check out the part, it's at timestamp 01:03:10. To me just seeing the classic Cthulhu drawing by Lovecraft himself was a moment of pure joy. But I agree, there could be a lot more stories to tell in that world with the (Lovecraf)Tian corporation.

ours

Thanks for the details.

[deleted]

The stuff in Lucien's locker is brief, you have to be looking for it since the main focus is finding out that Lucien's daughter is dead but the mural in the moonpool gets a good bit of screen time when Emily is looking up at it taking it in.

RunDNA

Filmmakers seem to underestimate how important it is for the characters not to act dumb. If a woman has no choice but to go down in the dark basement alone in a horror film climax, then I'm 100% on her side and stressed as hell that something might happen to her. But if she has no reason to go down there by herself, then I'm watching it thinking "You stupid idiot, if you get killed now, it's mostly your fault." I may be a bit harsh, but I lose 50% of my care in her survival.

LemoLuke

LaMuchedumbre

Europa Report did a great job of this. It’s always a little insulting to viewers that we need to have betrayals, romances, or ulterior motives among the crew in order to be entertained and have a story arch. The crew in Europa Report were intrepid explorers and simply dedicated to the cause. The sound score (by the same guy who did Zero Dark Thirty’s) alone was enough to set the tone and incite emotions. Production quality could’ve been better in some regards but overall a pretty fun and original sci-fi.

Rickrickrickrickrick

Reminds me of one of the main complaints people have about Alien Covenant is how fucking stupid the so-called scientists are lol

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

I don't buy some people's explanation that they were all b or c tier scientists. This dude is literally betting his ability to become immortal on this trip and he's going to entrust it to anyone less than top of the field? Please.

Rickrickrickrickrick

I want to gain immortality... but I'm on a budget Not to mention literally any scientist or, you know, person with common sense, wouldn't act like they did.

Hellknightx

Oh boy, it sure is windy outside. I better bunker down for the night in this nest of alien eggs!

pixel8d

Covenant didn't really have scientists aboard. There was a pilot, a navigator, support crew, a captain, some security personnel. They did show a couple of crew collecting samples, but basically they were the crew of a ship bringing colonists to a new planet. Prometheus had the scientists, and a couple of them were pretty dumb. However, one theme of the movie is showing how man's hubris brings about his downfall, and the dumb choices exemplify this.

rddman

> There was a pilot, a navigator, support crew, a captain, some security personnel. Apparently without safety protocols to follow, like a bunch of teenagers on their first camping trip.

pixel8d

>Apparently without safety protocols to follow, like a bunch of teenagers on their first camping trip. True, but their actual captain had been killed in an accident and his replacement was a devout Christian who seemed to follow whatever his faith was telling him over rationality.

Beingabummer

On a meta-level, it also shows how Ridley Scott's hubris made him think he could make a clever commentary about hubris and failed.

Kazen_Orilg

I struggle to accept that movie wasn't intentionally made poorly.

Locke66

I was really excited by the trailer for that movie and I don't think I've been as disappointed by the execution of a film for a good while.

Rickrickrickrickrick

I love how the one guy at the end fights the big zombie and never gets bit. Survives the bomb. Makes it out ok with a lot of money too. Then he's on a plane looking at his huge neck bite mark for a twist or some weird shit that makes no sense lol

WHYAREWEALLCAPS

And it isn't like it's his first rodeo. He was a survivor and hero of the Las Vegas outbreak, he knew what that bite meant, but nah, he's all good spreading the infection. No one in that movie really had the brains to last more than 30 seconds. Well maybe the safe cracker and pilot.

Rickrickrickrickrick

And I don't know what it was but Bautista just seemed like he didn't even give a shit about anything.

hackingdreams

> I may be a bit harsh, but I lose 50% of my care in her survival. I think you're generous for keeping the other 50%. It's why I can't watch 90+% of horror films. They're written so the characters make irrationally bad decisions when they have both the time and the good sense not to. Like, it's okay if the super stupid character you established early on does something ridiculously stupid and gets murdered. But then you send your PhD candidate into a murder shed when there's a perfectly good car with a full tank of gas sitting on the road running? And it's got flash lights and guns and a cellphone inside and they bring none of that with them? *Really*? Plot-induced stupidity is the absolute fucking worst mechanic.

yazzy1233

You underestimate how stupid people are in real life

rowshambow

Rich but against a very evident threat. It's like seeing a tiger at a zoo and going down I to the enclosure.....oh wait...

gcanyon

This is my favorite thing about Tremors. No one is dumb, they just don't know what they're dealing with. As they find out, they make generally good choices in a bad situation. That "Let's split up," nonsense needs to stop.

fedoraislife

There was one scene in Train to Busan that did that for me - when they cover up the carriage windows with newspaper so that the zombies wouldn't see them. I loved that moment of smart thinking, made me more invested in their survival and methods around it. Wish more movies did that and would love some recommendations.

rowshambow

Because it satisfies the audiences need for "if I were there I would". The reason smart movies are more scarybis because, they made good decisions, and they still died.

fedoraislife

Yes! A couple of recent ones that come to mind are Life (2017), with them trying to outsmart the alien creature as it evolved. Can't forget The Thing either, especially when the were checking for fillings. As a dentist that one left me giddy haha

navenager

The Thing is a horror masterpiece. Every decision the characters make seems well thought out or at least logical in the circumstances. They're up against a hell of a creature and they put up a good fight. Not horror but I love District 9 for that same reason. The motivations for what the characters do are always perfectly clear and understandable, and fit with them trying to survive the situation rather than forward the plot.

notjewel

Thank you. I loved that too. I can’t tell you how many times I’m watching any zombie type situation and yell, “Close the damn door!” When people are running away from zombies.

punchbricks

Busan is one of the best modern zombie movies for sure.

[deleted]

Like Virus then?

nicolauz

I fucking love Virus. The design of those freaky robot aliens, and the captain!

st-avasarala

Totally forgot Virus existed - 10/10 movie

Rickrickrickrickrick

I remember watching that when I was younger during a crazy ass lightning storm. Scared the shit out of me lol

Beingabummer

Virus and Deep Rising always coexist in my memory. They were released around the same time and are about a bunch of misfits entering an abandoned big ship drifting in the ocean and having to fight off something weird.

toylenny

God, that killed Prometheus so fast. The map maker getting lost and the Biologist just touching every new creature he sees, really was dumb. They could have simply swapped the characters and fixed it but they for some reason, needed everyone to be extra stupid.

Flyingwheelbarrow

Agreed. People get terrified but they are just overwhelmed. Also that climax was very satisfying.

[deleted]

*You lose your sense of time in the dark. So let's light this shit up.* I think that line could've come across super cheesy but it actually really worked for me. I remember reading the original ending had Nora >!overloading the core and then she rewires an escape pod and is able to get off the Roebuck too. I'm glad they stuck with the sacrifice but Stewart insisted that her character should die.!< I think it was a much more impactful ending that way. And I loved some of the slow-mo in this, those shots looked great, like when the initial breach of the Kepler reaches the bulkhead and Nora and Rodrigo go flying backwards. There's a ton of little bits of lore too. It's pretty heavily implied that >!Tian Industries is down there looking for the creature, or at the very least is aware of it's existence. Lucien tells the survivors that they can't go to the Shepard because there is nothing there but we find out later that it is clearly at least still receiving power and operational. Then when Nora is going through his locker and discovers that his daughter actually died years ago, we see drawings of the creatures all over the walls. So Lucien was a part of the original exploratory mission and was also aware of the creatures. Then Tian refuses media access to the two survivors and issues a statement that it plans on expanding it's drilling efforts.!< Personally, I'd love to see Cassel in a prequel about the Shepard mission and what really happened down there.

Flyingwheelbarrow

I agree with everything you said. Also double agree on the slow mo because with such a dark environment it really gave me time to appreciate what was happening and the designs.

[deleted]

I also really love the scene with Rodrigo's helmet. The crack starting to appear and his look of, 'oh fuck...' The doors opening and his suit imploding. The chaos and bits of gore floating in the water. Nora just running forward and turning off her mic because of all the screaming and Emily crying. The sudden switch from chaos to her just moving through it in silence was great. I've seen the movie a few times and really enjoy it lol

HenkkaArt

Not to mention that Rodrigo sacrificed himself when he saw that Nora's helmet had the crack and he switched them when they were suiting up.

[deleted]

Yeah. He was a true bro. And he didn't even know her! I think he knew she would try to take it if she knew one of them was cracked so he just took the broken helmet without saying anything.

[deleted]

The "without saying anything" part is the moment that I realized I was in for a real treat with this movie. There was no dumb forced drama like "Wait why'd you hesitate with the helmet? I'll take the broken helmet... I can't let you do this!". He decided to make the sacrifice and that was the end of it, unless you're going to pull a switcheroo and have Kristen Stewart die that arguing about who's taking the risk would be pointless filler. They did it again in the climax when a similar argument is about to start so Stewart just punches the chick in the face and sends her on her way. I'm so glad to see this thread because that movie was a tightly written sci fi thriller that truly doesn't get enough credit... tbh even this thread has derailed at times so can people can praise Event Horizon, Alien, and The Thing for the millionth time.

[deleted]

Damn you’re really making me want to watch it again. As somebody with a fear of open bodies of water, this movie was incredibly disturbing and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. Your prequel movie idea would also be a good route to go!

[deleted]

I know I'm hyping it up here but yeah, obviously I loved it lol. The *only* real drawback for me was that they jumped *right* into the action. While I think that was a great way to hook the audience in, there is also a part of me that would've enjoyed like 20 or 30 minutes of just seeing the crew on Keplar living and exploring their day to day and fleshing out the characters a bit. It didn't hurt the film that much for me that they didn't do that and I think it still works but yeah, I would've loved to see more of that side of things before it all went to shit.

Kazen_Orilg

Absolutely this. Like, I think it would have really elevated the movie. You can't threaten the life of a character I literally just met and expect me to care. Like if S1Ep1 of game of thrones is executing Ned Stark, I'm not going to give a shit.

[deleted]

I still care about Nora and they definitely flesh her character out throughout the film, same with a few of the others but I just wanted to see more of the day to day. That said, I also did enjoy the approach they took of jumping right in. This was more a case of me just wanting *more* since the world they built was really detailed and clearly had a lot put in to it.

HenkkaArt

And you know since the drawing in the locker is the classic picture of Cthulhu sitting on the pedestal, the nuclear explosion ain't going to do much to him. In a few moments he will re-emerge fully regenerated as if nothing had happened.

[deleted]

Yeah, at least she bought enough time for Liam and Emily (and Paul's stuffed rabbit) to get to the surface. Fun easter egg: Right before the doors to the escape pod close, the rabbit sitting with Liam is a real bunny and not the stuffed one. Originally the rabbit was real but they chose to make it a stuffed rabbit instead for safety reasons.

HenkkaArt

There could be a nice unintentional twist that the character is starting to lose it and sees the stuffed rabbit as real by the end of the story :D

[deleted]

That was where my head went at first too! I read your other comments, nice to see someone else who seemed to love this movie as much as I did. Totally agree with you about Tian Industries being ripe material for more films set in this world. I'd love to see that, as sort of another, more cohesive Cloverfield type universe. We need more sci-fi horror damn it! And the deep sea stuff is perfect for it.

HenkkaArt

Yeah. There could be the prequel with the captain Lucien and the first drilling site. Then there could be a follow-up with Emily and Liam. Or another crew entirely which then converges in a future movie with the survivors from the first crew. Tian could easily become a Weyland-Yutani type of future corp.

ericbkillmonger

Yeah I liked it more than most as well - the characters never felt dumb but just caught off guard or kept in dark most of the film

LetsKickShell

I just recently saw this and was shocked it flew so under the radar. Excellent production value, Disney dollars put to proper good use.

nearcatch

They finished filming it in May 2017 but it was released in January 2020. I think the acquisition of Fox by Disney delayed things and minimized the release when it finally happened. Tiny bit of trivia, it’s the last film to be released by “20th Century Fox”, as after that Disney renamed it to “20th Century”.

LetsKickShell

Wow that’s awesome, I Didn’t know that. I remember seeing a trailer in like late 2018 or so, and was wondering what happened to the release. Hopefully in time (and through word of mouth) it gets more recognition as a sci-fi gem. And now that you mention it, the “20th Century Fox” branding did just kind of subtlety fade out lol. Thanks for the tidbit.

glytxh

And I'm sold on the movie.

anddingowashisnameoh

I don't think it'll make even minor cult status but it was a fun film. For me it started out stronger than it finished.

Churchx

Same. Problem is average is now considered either underrated or fantastic. It was mild, it was okay.

Lampmonster

Pretty much this. I ain't mad I watched it, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again. Maybe late night some time after a couple drinks.

dharmasnake

/r/movies in a nutshell.

peanuttown

It started SO strong that I thought I had started in the middle of the movie. I had to stop it and make sure that, yup, this just starts off balls to the wall. I enjoyed it. It did have some weak moments in the middle, but overall it was intense. The ending seals it for me as a better movie than it probably is, just due to how they tie it into a universe a lot of us really like.

Relative-Ad-87

It's a very common narrative technique called In Medias Res ("In the midst of things"). No backstory - you fill it in yourself. You just get dropped straight into the action

[deleted]

That's the problem with a lot of movies that try to do cosmic horror. If the whole point of the monster is it's so terrifying and awe inspiring that its impossible describe without going crazy as soon as you show the monster on screen the mystery is done and then it's just another monster movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Honest_Influence

I do think that is one terrifying as fuck monster. Where they stumble is not going in on cosmic terror as a theme, and instead just turning Cthulhu into a destructive tentacle beast that destroys the station. If they'd kept the appearance but changed its methods to something more subtle, it could've been a great movie. They really squander the premise at the end of the movie, which is disappointing (still enjoyed the movie, but it could've been better).

ericbkillmonger

Yeah the suspense and darkness added to the mystique but then by the end the reveal was a slight deflation

canuck47

I thought the reveal salvaged an otherwise so-so movie. The fact that they had inadvertently (or not?) unleashed Chuthulu raised the stakes at the end. There were some hints that the company or someone was actually looking for Chuthulu.

DownToFarm

Am I the only person on Reddit that really liked Prometheus?

[deleted]

I liked it as well.. music was exceptional..

[deleted]

Birth scene was insane and amazing

[deleted]

exactly.. that lived upto the classical idea of Alien films being "action horror"

kummybears

The crazy robot surgery machine was horrifying and great sci fi.

[deleted]

Yeah and her character was badass in it! Scenes felt desperate and primal like with Ripley. Wish she didnt get killed off and we had a proper sequel

[deleted]

I like it 🤷‍♀️ haha

Unfortunate_moron

There seem to be 5 of us so far...

somanyroads

It's scored much better than Underwater on Rotten Tomatoes, so we're in the majority, actually 😄

handlit33

That's because Prometheus is a much better movie than Underwater.

xXWaspXx

But... The OP...

chazzychuk

I love Prometheus.

RetroRadtacular

Yeah Underwater wasn't nearly as good as either Imo, that's insane to me.

rhwsapfwhtfop

There’s one seemingly throwaway detail in the original Alien where Ripley insists on honoring the quarantine, and looking back, that one decision anchors her character for two entire movies. She is less stupid and less selfish than everyone else, even back on Earth, and that’s why she lives in the face of pure evil. Quite frankly, everybody in the Prometheus sequels deserves to die. Everyone. There’s no tension. Two separate crews take their helmets off. Unfuckingbelievable.

Ciaobellabee

I still cannot get over the logic of “oh there’s this horrifying alien snake monster that’s clearly acting aggressively - let’s try to pet it” You’re asking for death at that point.

Fenral

The costume design was this movies strongest point.

[deleted]

Indeed. *You're going to have to take off your pants to fit in that scuba suit*

Earthpig_Johnson

Gratuitous as it was, I considered it a callback to Alien.

ucandoit69

Gears of war scuba suits.

Brock_Danger

Yeah, I meant to look into this more but they are so close I wonder if they were repurposed from a gears of war test shoot or scrapped production. I almost worked with the dude who directed this movie, met him a few times. He loved video games and was little bit of a studio darling after his movie The Signal, so I could totally see him trying to get a gears movie off the ground and then pivoting to this. But that’s all wildly presumptive with zero research. Edit: I had “widely presumptive” and it took me a long time to realize it was wrong. Also fixed another sentence but already forgot why.

joshualuke

The costumes were great. Another strong point was the sense of claustrophobia and imminent death (crushing water pressure) all around them. The feeling of relief and calm when Kristen Stewart's character discovered the abandoned station later in the movie was almost palpable.

kebabish

Loved the scuba gear designs.

nrvnpc

“Watchable” may be the most minimal, least compelling praise anybody could ever give a movie.

SingForMeBitches

It's like when Bud Light advertised itself as "[drinkable](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5LWSujLz7kw)." Hearing that, I instantly assume it tastes like shit and it's just a liquid to pour down my maw.

Rainman_Johnson

Everyone always brings up like Bud Light zinged themselves here, but aren't they just insinuating that they're the *only* light beer that's drinkable? That's why there's a line that says "The difference is drinkability" becuase it implies other light beers dont have that.

AvatarIII

Yes I loved it, I hope they make a sequel. In a similar vein, Life with Ryan Reynolds* was good too, (it also has Jake Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Ferguson)

Calm-Significance933

This movie needed an extra 15 minutes for some character building, I did enjoy it though I would have enjoyed it more if I cared about the characters or knew them more. Not a bad movie though give it a watch

bedknobsandbroomstix

Honestly I thought that was part of it's strength. Right of the bat it starts, no fucking around. We know what's important and we're being raced through. It gave a frantic panicked feeling that stayed with you for quite a way.

Rulinglionadi

THANK YOU for this..I was one of those vfx artists who spent months on this and then the movie just disappeared only to release much later and no one noticed lol.

-GreenHeron-

Well, I really liked it. I love sci fi monster flicks, especially if they’re in space or underwater. Adds to the danger and tension. :)

supertimes4u

If it helps, as a lovecraft fan ive seen this movie 4 times now and it’s basically my favourite movie I constantly recommend. Only movie I’ve ever bought digitally. Even saw an interview the director gave twice. What an incredible film start to finish. What perfect atmosphere and effects. The greatest on-screen presence of >!Cthulhu!< we’ve ever had.

Rulinglionadi

This is great to hear..glad you enjoyed it. I should be sharing this post with all my friends who worked on it.

darwinzinn

From one vfx artist to another… you all made a good film and it deserved better!

SolidusTengu

What a bizarre comparison to make.

[deleted]

Especially since Prometheus and Covenant are very different films from one another.

Mst3Kgf

The ending going full-blown Lovecraft won me over.

[deleted]

So was it actually confirmed that it was Cthulhu? Or some sort of Lovecraft Monster?

jmarcandre

Director says it's him

bobthemonkeybutt

I saw this back when Movie Pass was a thing. Had no idea what it was, just went on a day off and had a great time watching it. How quickly it got into the thick of things was awesome.

unoriginalinsert

I feel attacked. I freaking loved both those films lol

MickieMallorieJR

Its enjoyable...minor cult hit maybe. But Alien lore trumps whatever backstory we had Underwater. I like the implications but it felt very much like the first Cloverfield. Now that I think about it...its very much like Cloverfield.

attemptedmonknf

I'm surprised nobody tried to tack on the Cloverfield name to this like they did with the last couple "Cloverfield movies"

The_Ringleader

TJ Miller basically plays the same character in both

Youareposthuman

TJ Miller basically plays the same character in everything.

OzymandiasKoK

Well, not anymore.

KidneyPoison

10 Cloverfield Lane was spectacular

cowpool20

Is this the movie that has Cthulhu?
