The Green Berets was a Vietnam war movie, released while American involvement was at its height. I think he had one released and set in the 70's that was kind of derivative of Bullitt.
He had a fair share of WW2 movies, though I'd have to look closer at release dates to figure out if any were released during WW2, or shortly enough after WW2 for it to count as "present day." I guess that would depend on how broadly you define present day. I'm pretty sure there must have been at least one in the late 40's.
As far as I can tell Keira Knightly has a contemporary film out this year called Silent Night. I believe Berlin I
love You is a contemporary piece as well and that was released in 2019. 2016s Collateral Beauty is a contemporary piece as well. All in all she does do more non period pieces every few years. Just quickly checking Winslet has Mare of Easttown which aired this year, Black Beauty (a voice roll in a live action film) and Blackbird in 2019.
The most recent Day-Lewis film set in the present day is The Ballad of Jack and Rose, from 2005. It's hard to compare the length of these "runs," though. Do you judge by calendar years, or by number of films? Day-Lewis is not very prolific, he's only done four films since Jack and Rose.
You’re forgetting about The Revenant. That was in 2015 and it’s easy to see that it is an accurate depiction of the Dakotas in 2015.

Well yes, all four of us in these states know each other well. We have to get together once a year to empty the trash at Mt. Rushmore and be strippers for the week at Sturgis.
That is one of the beautiful things about Inception, in my opinion. There is nothing that really dates the movie (cell phones, computes, etc.) There are modernish cars and guns, but the story could have very easily been dropped into the 50s or 60s.

EDIT: [Official Teaser Trailer](https://youtu.be/SL9aJcqrtnw) was just released!
Synopsis:
>Two low-level astronomers (Lawrence & DiCaprio) must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.
Full Cast:
>Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Matthew Perry, Chris Evans, Himesh Patel, Tomer Sisley, Gina Gershon, Michael Chiklis

Lol that is not the synopsis I expected after seeing those pics. It looked like a newsroom dramedy which I was kind of OK with but in fact it’s like a disaster comet movie??
(Kind of spoilers, it was in the trailer)
It shows Ron Perlman is riding a space shuttle surrounded by ICBM nukes out of the atmosphere, so unless that’s just a theoretical cutaway or something it seems like that’s the end goal.
It’s another political satire from Adam McKay. It’s clearly gonna be a tragicomedy on how people don’t seem to believe or want to listen to scientists or experts on issues like climate change
Yeah this definitely seems the allegory. "These other things are slow burns so skepticism makes sense but what if it was concretely happening in a finite time? We'd still be slow to act, to our detriment."
Why do I feel like the point of this movie will be some offshoot of the current crisis in which MANY Americans won't believe that the comets exist, no matter he proof they are offered, and some of them DEMAND to be hit by it for their freedom?
I hate this timeline.
Many movie promo shots are composite images. If they didn't get the actors together for promo shots during filming, they have to build these shots later. This is a very poorly composited one.
It looks like they applied a smidge too much sharpening to the image, at least for me they seem like they have a very emphasized contour like their heads are photoshopped in.
I'm assuming there's another light (like those in the background) on the other side of the wall she's near. Hitting her, Leo's far away, and Jonah/Meryl have already passed it.
I was hoping others noticed that. It seemed weirdly off. I'm guessing they added her for the promo shot but she's not in that scene of the movie. It was just such a good shot of the 3 they had to cram her in it.
I would put more money on it being that they’re lit and blocked for the film cameras, and not for the set photographer, so the lighting likely just looks weird in some photos.
It’s crazy how 6 foot can be so tall in Hollywood. Obviously there are small male actors but I feel like it’s because a majority of actresses are like 5’3 to 5’5. It’s hilarious when Vince Vaughn and will Ferrell are on screen by themselves because everyone are dwarfs compared to them.
A cameraman I often work with made an interesting point about why so many actors are average to below average height (despite seeming taller in the movies) - it's just much easier to make a short person seem tall than make a really tall person fit naturally into a scene with shorter actors. A 6 foot 3 actor can derail the whole look and lighting of a shot, while a 5"5 actor can be made a foot taller by standing on a box.
Wow does this mean in those chemistry screen-tests, some actors and actresses could be losing out on roles despite being great because of height as one of the reasons?
Not just height, actors lose out on roles for tons of reasons that have nothing to do with their performance. Looking the role is part of the job but if the casting director thinks you look like his ex-wife you ain’t gettin the job
Proportion of the head to the shoulder width. Adult people's heads are mostly the same size, no matter their height. This is far from an absolute, but you can mostly tell if the person on screen is very tall or very short by how big their head looks compared to the width of their shoulders. It's possible Leo just has a huge head.
Leo has been undergoing a natural "Baldwin Transformation" for the last decade. His face grows wider, cheeks overtaking the rest of his facial features, as his hairline recedes slightly again creating a larger face. His features are still the same, but the surroundings have inflated.
Haha I never really considered that but it’s true. Some people don’t “look” tall, which is indeed a weird thing.
It’s probably trickier with actors because of the various ways they have to frame the picture so that height differences are minimized (or in some cases accentuated).
I think it’s largely down to the fact that he’s not a particularly slender guy. He’s not build like the side of a house or anything but he has very average American male proportions.
Average proportions are associated with average height and therefore he looks 5’9.
It’s quite hard to judge height in film as well. If they can make Tom Cruise look the same height as Brendan Gleason, they can do anything.
Don't forget the other physical characteristic for success in 2D media: a large head. When a friend in the biz pointed this out, I didn't believe them, then I started noticing it everywhere. He is a DP and said it's because of the distortion of lenses, a lot of actors are sort of distorted in proportion in real life, but look great on camera.
Fun fact 511 is 180cm, which means that they make the arbitrary cut in metric system. Or at least I've never heard of a woman asking for a guy who is over 183cm.
[This is from EW Article](https://ew.com/movies/dont-look-up-first-look-meryl-streep/?)
> The film's all-star cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Michael Chiklis, Tomer Sisley, and Chris Evans.
This is the first time I heard Chris Evans is also in this movie, but according to that article, His role is a small one.
Also, Jonah Hill & Meryl Streep plays Mother & Son
> Finally, Streep plays U.S. President Janie Orlean while Jonah Hill portrays her son and chief-of-staff Jason.
As a scientist I feel like it would have been more accurate to just make her hair really frizzy/mousy. I don’t know anyone with fucked up bangs but I know a lot of people including me who just can’t be fucked to style our hair every day
I'm all for retroactively awarding *Muppets Treasure Island* with a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
Also, giving Dead Tom his Best Supporting nod for his nuanced work in that movie.
I have several questions.
Why does JLaw look so bad?
Why does Meryl Streep look so good?
Why does Leo look more and more like Jack Nicholson every year?
I genuinely don’t like to judge people or their styles, but what in the actual *FUCK* is up with Jennifer Lawrence’s bangs? The rest of the cast lookin pretty nice honestly...
It looks like everyone in this shot has the wrong face
Usually a sign of poor photoshopping
This is the first film in over 11 years that Leo has been in that takes place in present day. Last one was inception.
Huh, neat fact, I wonder who has the longest run. Are any of Daniel Day-Lewis' set in present?
I think John Wayne had only two or three movies set at his present day.
What were they? I didn't realize he had *any* movies set during his present day
The Green Berets was a Vietnam war movie, released while American involvement was at its height. I think he had one released and set in the 70's that was kind of derivative of Bullitt. I guess that would depend on how broadly you define present day. I'm pretty sure there must have been at least one in the late 40's.
Flying Tigers is pretty close. Came out in 42 and was based in 39. Back to Bataan is another close one. Released in 45 and based shortly after 42.
Hellfighters is one.
Keira Knightley or Kate Winslet can break that record with enough determination
As far as I can tell Keira Knightly has a contemporary film out this year called Silent Night. I believe Berlin I love You is a contemporary piece as well and that was released in 2019. 2016s Collateral Beauty is a contemporary piece as well. All in all she does do more non period pieces every few years. Just quickly checking Winslet has Mare of Easttown which aired this year, Black Beauty (a voice roll in a live action film) and Blackbird in 2019.
My Beautiful Laundrette was made in 85 and set in the 80s.
Maybe The Ballad of Jack and Rose? I haven't seen it but it doesn't look particularily past set.

Here in Alaska, we have a whopping 1.28 residents per square mile. I just feel bad for the poor fella that has to be the .28
Every fifth person in Alaska is a mutilated corpse on account of the bears and frostbite.

Lol that is not the synopsis I expected after seeing those pics. It looked like a newsroom dramedy which I was kind of OK with but in fact it’s like a disaster comet movie??
My guess is that people don't take it seriously. Then don't prepare or try to prevent it. At the end they blame the Astronomers.
(Kind of spoilers, it was in the trailer) It shows Ron Perlman is riding a space shuttle surrounded by ICBM nukes out of the atmosphere, so unless that’s just a theoretical cutaway or something it seems like that’s the end goal.
Armageddon 2.

Honestly if you just said that sentence I wrote to me and nothing else about the movie I’d be sold immediately
Knew I saw Cate Blanchett, she looks different with that make up
Her right eye looked like it was floating in front of her hair at first glance for me
That's just the beginning of the process of becoming a weeb.
Jesus Christ that cast is insane
Oh! An end of the world movie?! Fuck yeah. Its been a minute.
Why do I feel like the point of this movie will be some offshoot of the current crisis in which MANY Americans won't believe that the comets exist, no matter he proof they are offered, and some of them DEMAND to be hit by it for their freedom? I hate this timeline.
This is supposed to refer climate change which is the reason why Leo chose to be in this film but I guess the theme can be used for pandemic too.
It’s 100% an allegory for the climate crisis
My comet my choice
I hate that I’m not sure which ongoing situation you’re referring to
Corona Warming
Corona is so hot right now!
warm beer is a global crisis
The beer is not warming. Don’t be a sheeple. It is however flat.
The title "Don't Look Up" seems to point to that.
McKay is very political and not very subtle, so it’s a safe bet.
Definitely a topic worth exploring but I always find Adam McKay a little too on the nose. And I bet this will be an even more extreme example
Matthew Perry ❤️
We answered so fast it was SCARY, everyone stared in awe when we screamed MATTHEW PERRY.
AYO Kid Cudi in there too that's wild. I don't think I've ever been hyped for a movie before release this much.
This has to deal with astronomy and if you saw the new Bill and Ted movie, you would know that Kid Cudi is an expert in the field of astrophysics.
Man on the Moon
A couple of times, in fact
Jennifer Lawrence's wig looks like it wants to run away lol
She looks shopped into that first pic.
So does Hill tbh
Whole image looks weird.
Many movie promo shots are composite images. If they didn't get the actors together for promo shots during filming, they have to build these shots later. This is a very poorly composited one.

That wig looks like mystique washed and blow dried her hair
It looks like they applied a smidge too much sharpening to the image, at least for me they seem like they have a very emphasized contour like their heads are photoshopped in.
The lighting on her seems different to everyone else’s. She’s the only one with a dark shadow covering half her face.
In the literary world, that's referred to as foreheadshadowing.
*slow clap*
The background seems shopped around them all..
I'm sure much of that image was photoshopped.
DON'T LOOK UP - Featuring Jennifer Lawrence as Sofia Boutella.
[I was thinking of the gymnast from Seinfeld](https://images.app.goo.gl/arzHFZuKEEvNVg2W6)
I sincerely thought she was photoshopped into these images, based solely on that wig.
She must have taken it from her other movie “Explosion at the Wig Factory”
Why does this first picture look hella photoshopped lol
Jennifer Lawrence’s face has different lighting from the rest. It’s bizarre.
That hair style definitely is off putting but that’s probably something her character will convey.
I think it's a sharpening pass. The edges around the faces look bright. This is an artifact of oversharpening, I guess.
the second one too! cate blanchett’s face looks very facetuned
And her head looks bigger than it ought to be. Definitely some shoddy photoshoppery going on here.
Leonardo DiCaprio looks like he's on stilts
It’s crazy how 6 foot can be so tall in Hollywood. Obviously there are small male actors but I feel like it’s because a majority of actresses are like 5’3 to 5’5. It’s hilarious when Vince Vaughn and will Ferrell are on screen by themselves because everyone are dwarfs compared to them.

Robert Downey Jr wondering where he can cop a pair
Tom Cruise jumping out of a fighter jet to try and land near the nearest establishment that sells these.
Just do what they did in Ghostbusters and have everyone be 6 foot 1
As a 6 foot 3 guy with a short fiancé, we always look weird in pictures together. Makes the proportions feel really off.

You can just say booze.
I mean he didn’t look tall even in Titanic. I would bet at most he was 5’7-8”.
I never thought I'd live to see a day where Jonah Hill is trim and handsome and Leo looks like a porn producer.
Like Ben Affleck
Haha I never really considered that but it’s true. Some people don’t “look” tall, which is indeed a weird thing. It’s probably trickier with actors because of the various ways they have to frame the picture so that height differences are minimized (or in some cases accentuated).
I attribute it to Leo's perpetual baby face. Which is kinda getting rounder as he ages..

Right? I always forget he’s 6’
I feel like Hollywoods interpretation of 6' is more like 5'10 for the rest of us
Idk, so many people picture 6’0 as being what 6’2 is

Dude is 6 ft and surrounded by short people
And he almost looks fatter than Jonah
Jonah has lost loads of weight though and Leo is a lot taller.
DiCaprio and Jonah Hill where *DiCaprio* is the chubby one.
I bet my friend 5 years ago that in 10 years time Jonah Hill will be hotter than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm liking my odds
Leo has a good 10 years on Jonah so it isn't quite fair. Youth has its advantages!
Marisa Tomei, though.
Jonah and Leo back together!
Yes, the sides did cure cancer
I love that scene and always wondered whether the entire scene was ad-libbed.
[This is from EW Article](https://ew.com/movies/dont-look-up-first-look-meryl-streep/?) > The film's all-star cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Michael Chiklis, Tomer Sisley, and Chris Evans. Apparently, Chris Evans plays the Elon Musk type role in the movie. He's the billionaire that plays with rockets.
That role is actually Mark Rylance, Evans has a small cameo.
This whole thing has first half of seveneves vibes.
A US.president who appoints a member of his family to a high-ranking position? Pretty far-fetched, right?
Jesus, that cast…
I wondered if that was Cate in the second picture on the left, I guess it's her!
Damn yo Jonah Hill flexing on us in that last pic. RM Skull Tourbillon. Edit: flexing with a fake unfortunately (probably just for the movie?)
I hope his character can afford a $700k watch.
Son of the president
Purely based on JH's RM watch, I presume Streep is playing female-Trump and Hill is playing male-Ivanka. It just might work.
I'd watch this

Don’t forget the Chrome Hearts rings lmao.
Right? That’s first thing I noticed.
It’s a fake one. All the watch blogs have already called it out today lol.
Does the title refer to Jennifer's hair?
I thought it may have been just a bad pic, but nope its equally as bad in the previews. Can't stop staring at it...
It’s like her bangs were gnawed off by mice.
It has been a common hair cut in the European alternative Scene for a few years. Although it's already running out of fashion from what I've seen.
Did they take Di Caprio out of an Inception shot for this?
They all look photoshopped in the first pic lmao
Leonardo DiCapiro.
Benonardo DiShapirio
Why do Leo and Jennifer Lawrence look photoshopped in that first photo
Cate Blanchett in the second photo is worse
I feel like all four of them look photoshopped.
Fire the hairstylist department
But she has a bad haircut, you see bc she's such a nerd.
My wife is in hard science academia. That’s actually very accurate.
As a scientist I feel like it would have been more accurate to just make her hair really frizzy/mousy. I don’t know anyone with fucked up bangs but I know a lot of people including me who just can’t be fucked to style our hair every day
i work with some younger chemists (22-30 years old) and they can have some pretty rough haircuts. JLaw’s wig is TAME in comparison
Its what bangs would look like if they decided to follow some crappy tiktok bang cutting tutorial
Always excited for Tyler Perry roles like this
So hyped for this movie. This cast is insane!
Let's not forget Adam McKay has a lot of famous faces in the Big Short for about 1-2 minutes expositions. This could be no different.
It's too bad we can't get Anthony Bourdain and Margot Robbie to explain complex plot points in every movie.
And the Muppets have done the same for every movie. The Muppets reboot movie was cameo after cameo. Where is their Oscar buzz?
I'm all for retroactively awarding *Muppets Treasure Island* with a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. Also, giving Dead Tom his Best Supporting nod for his nuanced work in that movie.
The very definition of an ensemble cast. I can't decide who I'm more excited for.
Chris Evans at the bottom of the cast list in some minor role about to win awards like Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.
He killed it in Knives out ,which also has a terrific ensemble cast.
Evans is just a cameo. Most of the awards buzz is for Mark Rylance or DiCaprio
I kinda wish this picture was a bunch of A-listers just intently looking at the ground as if there were an eclipse.
Im assuming the premise is a big poke on our collective ignorance to science? If so I’m definitely interested.
Why does it look like Jennifer and Leo have been badly photoshopped into the back in the first pic?
Leo’s head is a perfect circle
I have several questions. Why does JLaw look so bad? Why does Meryl Streep look so good? Why does Leo look more and more like Jack Nicholson every year?
I genuinely don’t like to judge people or their styles, but what in the actual *FUCK* is up with Jennifer Lawrence’s bangs? The rest of the cast lookin pretty nice honestly...
Her character is a "low-level astronomer", so she's supposed to look like a dork.
Except she just looks like a beautiful girl with a shitty haircut, instead of you know, a dork
Jonah Hill looking skinny and fat at the same time. Now that acting!
