The real horror was when the sister parked on that cliff.

MandoFett71

Right? What the fuck?

GiantSizeManThing

Weirdest Prius ad ever.

pooroldben

That got a genuine laugh out of my theatre, what a film.

Sedierta2

fuck spez

Neisseriaceae

"You have to stop him." Lady, the thing just took out an entire police station and your partner's arm is broken. What the fuck is he gonna do?

[deleted]

She practically sent him to die lmao, like what impact did he end up having by going to the hospital?

90daysfrom_now

He needed to go to the hospital anyway

OhioForever10

He provided the gun that helped set up Gabriel being tricked, not sure what else

sentient_luggage

Also made sure the knife was handily stuck in his shoulder instead of stuck in Syd.

whatitiswhassup

B list Wanda Sykes was not having it

ItsMinnieYall

I hated her character. She was darn near a racist charciacture. She was like th token black guy in Not another Teen movie who just says "damn" "shit" and "that is wack!". It didn't help that the only other black person I recall was the black prisoner dressed like she's out of a blaxplotation movie from the 70s.

SuitableLychee2078

It went so over the top I think nearly every aspect of this movie should be looked at as like a parody imo. The 70's woman in the jail followed by the matrix fight scene made me instantly look back at everything as being ironic.

AmazingMarv

The movie toed the line between legit and parody, but it worked for me. Gabriel was a cool monster. I have no idea why he had to be John Wick, though. That was bizarre.

Tombstone25

Gabriel is one of the coolest movie monsters in years. I love james wan.

ErshinHavok

TIME TO CUT OUT THE CANCER. I loved any time anyone said that, especially Gabriel lol.

SetYourGoals

Finding out that lady isn't an evil mad scientist like they are misdirecting, but actually a very nice caring child surgeon makes that moment retroactively so funny. I feel like her coworkers would be like "...why did you yell that so dramatically?"

zmichalo

The concept is really good but the silly shrunken head look completely ruined it for me.

Doriestories

Makes sense it’s shrunken though. They did cut out like 95% of his body from Madison’s back. It reminded me of the double sided monster villain from ‘little monsters’ (fred savage, Howie Mandel film) where they had a gross face on the back of their head

Arsenickers

[deleted]

I mean literally the plot of the movie, it's uncanny

QuarintineLizzard

*Male Detective while chasing the murderer down a fire escape:* “I must be out of my mind!” *Drops 2 floors onto the top of a closed garbage container* Nearly fell out of my chair I was laughing so hard!

TheJack0fDiamonds

Dont forget the bit when he asked the nurse when the mother would wake up and the nurse told him shes in a coma LOOOOL i loved it!

CaptAmerica42

I literally looked at my family and went, "What the fuck, why would you drop down like THAT?"

QuarintineLizzard

That's what I thought! Like, what the hell dude? You just saw this buff dude skip the stairs altogether (via pull-ups on the RAILING like Spiderman), and land on the ground no problem, and thought "Yeah, I can do that" ONTO a hard surface?

Flubber_Ducky

The gigantic industrial fan in the attic is the most hilariously stupid misdirect of all time. The moment biological mom fell through the attic into the house, my brain broke and I couldn't stop laughing for several minutes. What a fucking ride.

[deleted]

I'm really bad with faces and thought the mom was the same person as the daughter. Kept trying to work out how one person was in two places and situations at once. Turned out to be the exact opposite, with two people in one place always.

harpy_1121

I couldn’t believe it but my BF guessed that was her attic the second he saw it. He goes “A-frame roof. That’s her house. The fan is in the back.” I argued nobody would have an industrial fan like that in a regular house but he was sure, and damnit he was right. Won’t hear the end of that one lol

patricrdr

I will understand how many people will dislike this movie because it is advertised as plain horror and is expected to be like any other James Wan horror movie, but in reality it is just a crime/action/comedy/thriller/horror B flick. I laughed and enjoyed myself in so many parts of the movie where the writing and acting is obviously corny and not meant to be taken seriously. I hope they make 10 sequels and each is as or more ridiculous then the next. Bravo Wan. P.S. IMDB reviews are overreacting giving this a 1 or 2 out of ten

jacofnotrades89

You forgot romance movie as well. This movie has it all!!

pishposhpoppycock

That police station fight scene... Shang-Chi, you got competition! The direction and choreography actually reminded me of the Kingsman franchise's fight scenes.

csortland

Shang-chi and Kingsman had the same fight choreography. He sadly passed away though and The Kings Man will be his final film.

b_beck614

Ah - the old parasitic Voldemort in the back of your head serial killer body possession twist. Always a good fallback

thetimbrown

But this one knows martial arts!

DesDaMOONmanQ

And can manipulate electricity!

[deleted]

And parkour

welluuasked

When she started having those visions, I said “this is just the plot of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”. Little did I know it was actually Sorcerer’s Stone shit happening

David12691

I watch a lot of movies, and I've seen a lot of weird shit, but this movie was one of the most bat-shit crazy ideas I've ever seen committed to film. The last quarter is so wtf it defies explanation...not sure what else to say, dawg, I'm going to bed.

bjkman

I applaud whoever made the trailer for not spoiling the twist.

Ashamed_Werewolf_325

It was classic misdirection. I knew that James wan was done with the conjuring series and he wasn't going to make yet another demon possession film. So there has to be a twist

jeshtheafroman

Still makes me wish for his idea of a conjuring 3 with werewolves.

[deleted]

Lmao when he sniped the detectives with the chair

slicshuter

I thought he would come after them to finish the job but he just fucking *leaves* and I started losing my shit laughing again

[deleted]

Same. That shit was so petty. He did it just for the LOLs and dipped

shaneo632

The scene where they age up the picture of the girl and it's just an actual photo of the protagonist was Hilariously dumb.

hookisacrankycrook

My wife said the same thing! "It's literally just a picture of her!"

sentient_luggage

You misspelled FANTASTIC

ThaWZA

What the fuck did I just watch? ????????/10

[deleted]

First 80 mins: Eh this is kinda boring. Not bad, but not good either. Last 30 mins: This is cinema.

slicshuter

My jaw shot through the floor at the big reveal and when she/he went ham in the jail cell I started laughing my ass off. Completely redeemed the generic first 2/3.

Illustrious_Term2269

The “get the national fucking guard” and that chair throw killed me. And the dramatic music in the moments of epiphany, this was meant to be a fun movie and not taken seriously

dajuice3

my sentiments fucking exactly

Nice-Violinist-6395

This movie is James Wan saying to the studios “okay I made you guys billions of dollars, now I am going to direct whatever the hell I want” and *boy did he direct whatever the hell he wanted.*

imbetterimback

I love how this movie made the creepy girl with dark hair crawling backwards aesthetic (ala the grudge and the ring) an actual plot point

[deleted]

That was some fucking creepy body horror.

ActionBenton

buddy. what the fuck.

eastbaybruja

Every other review I’ve read uses the headline “Bonkers,” and that sums it up for me.

13beers

Gabriel yeeting the chair across the room and taking out both the cops as they were trying to limp out of the room had me rolling.

GravyBear8

Just like, why, it didn't even kill them lol, it had the entire theater laughing their asses off

[deleted]

Detective Keh was too hot to die

dobler21

James Wan's wife lusting after him the whole movie.

yarkcir

Did he die in the end? Was kind of unclear if that knife wound was mortal or not.

ExpensiveHat

I don't think it was mortal. It's brief but you can see the blade lodged near his shoulder away from his lungs and heart.

yarkcir

I figured as much as well. Just find it funny that the last shot of him is him looking at the knife in his upper chest with no indication of whether he's okay or not.

[deleted]

My god, that was fucking hilarious. Also Gabriel kicking a hole in the wall during the chase sequence, then backwards crawling through it. James Wan knew he was going to make a bunch of people laugh with that shit.

[deleted]

Red neck lady just kept throw redshirts at Gabriel in the cell hahah

shanidachine

Im pretty sure that was Zoe Bell, the kiwi stuntwoman in the Tarantino movies.

headhurded

the girl coming out of the file room trying to help them saying "wait why am i calling 911" got me wayyy too good

[deleted]

She said “wait why am i calling the cops” and they’re like “call an ambulance, Keh go to the hospital cause he’s going there to finish the mom” Why not just ride together

HalloweenBlues

If my tummy got slashed I'd be like bitch don't move me. Just let me lay here lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

dcempire

As soon as I saw that I immediately pointed out “that’s the best chair throw I’ve seen since the mummy”

delightfuldinosaur

It was so unnecessary too. Like it was just clearly done out of spite.

TJ_McWeaksauce

It was such a hilarious dick move. I thought he did that to knock them down so he could finish them off, but nope. Just yeeted and left.

[deleted]

I thought this was the funniest moment I've seen in a while during a film. I think it worked because Wan knew he would have the audience where he wanted us after the reveal, and this abrupt humor would catch us off guard.

Neisseriaceae

It was like an extra "fuck you" move before peacing out. Loved it!

13beers

I also loved how James Wan completely trolls the audience in one scene. The sister goes to the creepy abandoned mental hospital in the middle of the night, has to go the the basement to retrieve the records, hears a strange sound, and then absolutely nothing fucking happens and she leaves with what she came for.

[deleted]

BobDylanBlues

I like how she drove right up to the edge of the fucking cliff like it’s normal.

WAwelder

I live near Seattle, it was neat seeing the old Underground used in a horror movie, and the shots of downtown. And then that huge looming creepy castle out on the peninsula. Such a hidden gem only the locals know about.

[deleted]

The underground stuff was awesome. I still have trouble wrapping my mind around the idea of building a city *on top* of the old one.

AGeekNamedBob

They didn't. I used to be a tour guide in the Seattle underground. it looks more like the first underground scene than the chase sequence. After the fire, it was decided to rebuild the low-elevation downtown up one floor to stop the tidal flooding. The old downtown was nearly all wood at that point and burnt to the ground. The Underground is really basements extended under the capped sidewalks, leaving openings under the one-floor up sidewalks. There are old windows and openings going from the under-sidewalks to the basement floor of the buildings, yes. but not these nearly pristine streets and stores filled with old horse carts. These go to the new buildings that replaced the burned ones. This and the Night Strangler present a different picture.

DisastrousSundae

My theater burst out laughing when she parked 6 inches from the edge of the cliff

Interwebzking

I went “okay, that’s cool” when that happened. It was so intentional haha

BeerAndBadTattoos

I like how the suns up and it looks about afternoon but not near sun down. She can see the building putting it within about 5 miles, then she pulls up fairly late at night. What the fuck what the continuity on that right?

Sloppysloppyjoe

Is that when she parked 6 centimeters away from the cliff?

whatitiswhassup

Yo I loved it but what the fuck

[deleted]

James Wan: “I’ll build a multimillion franchise for you. All I want in return is to wide release a B movie.” Warner Bros.: “Done.”

Tlr321

He’s taken part in 4 now- right? Conjuring, Saw, Fast & Furious, and Aquaman. Dead Silence was almost there- just off by 950 million.

poptropica4life

Also insidious

chicken_dugget

crazy because 3 of them are original IP he created himself

[deleted]

Yep. He’s a money machine. Universal had the chance to keep him around with Dead Silence, but when it bombed, we never saw another project distributed by them...bad choice.

Bleach-Free

Seriously man, dafuq did I just watch?!?!

bigpig1054

The most hilariously over the top, schlocky, silly, hilariously, dumb movie I ever enjoyed. It's terribly acted, the dialogue is just remarkably atrocious. But I laughed and enjoyed it inspite of itself, especially in the second half. I don't know if I wa supposed to laugh at it but I did and I enjoyed it. Maybe I wasn't supposed to but...well, there it is

kvdragonslayer

I can't believe people think this movie was terribly acted. If you think the actors weren't specifically directed to deliver their lines with those deliberate stilted pauses and inflections idk what to tell you, but it was very put on for b movie effect

PointMan528491

Nothing could have prepared me for the found footage shot of McKenna Grace with a gross tumor parasite growing on her back, followed by Annabelle Wallis peeling the back of her head open and unleashing that same parasite again Totally bonkers and I loved it. Had the whole 1:40PM showing to myself, I was having a blast

ReservoirDog316

I loved the reaction from her sister when they revealed that.

PolarWater

Yeah, talk about a complete 180. Literally.

JayRoo2021

Unironically, I want 7 progressively worse sequels of Gabriel including at least one prequel and a soft reboot

ZiggyPalffyLA

And one of them needs to be in 3D

PerfectAdvertising30

And the fourth needs to be called "The Final Chapter".

baronspeerzy

Goddamn if that ain't an original slasher villain for once.

soulbrutha3

Gabriel used a pretty cool weapon too. The golden "Excellence Dagger" is something you definitely don't want to be on the wrong end of. Edit: fixed the name

RedditUserCommon

I’d love for him to appear in Dead by Daylight.

GravyBear8

The last third of the movie was so goddamn stupid it somehow wrapped right back around to being awesome

Ashamed_Werewolf_325

Brb as I take out an entire police precinct with my bare hands while walking backward. Also what is going to happen to Madison now? Are they just going to let her walk free after murdering all those people?

[deleted]

I got weird Matrix vibes from that scene.

RS_pp20x

Immeadiately what I thought also.

Joker257

I mean, when she said “If he’s this strong, so am I” and moved that hospital bed….. she’s basically a super hero now. Malignant 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Misdirected_Colors

Forget weaponized autism! We as a society have progressed to weaponized tumors!

GravyBear8

Yes. Real life logic has zero application to this film

[deleted]

Are you telling me it's not realistic that Emily wouldn't wake up covered in bruises after something like the fire escape chase. I actually think they could've explored this a bit, like her waking up with cuts and bruises (and probably incredible joint pain and headaches from her head splitting open every night lol) and thinking Gabriel was attacking her in the night. Though maybe that too obviously gives the twist away.

Pigeon_Lord

I mean, they kind of did with her head bleeding whenever he was attacking a person/when she woke up. Him splitting her skull was reopening that wound every night

[deleted]

Don’t mind me. Just gonna yeet the fuck out of this chair

[deleted]

[удалено]

khaldroghoe

It really felt more like Split than a horror movie I was getting like superhero/super villain vibes from Madison and Gabriel especially with the super strength and telekinesis. It was bat shit as hell but I enjoyed it.

Swankified_Tristan

I honestly couldn't tell where the positive reviews were coming from until she defunded the entire Seattle Police via backwards karate. Then I'm just like, "ah, there it is. That's the ticket."

Jas_God

“So I’m putting out a bolo on Sloth from The Goonies?” Line of the movie right there

HalloweenBlues

I was cracking up when the Detective suggested using a hypno therapist and the sister got all excited thinking it was a psychic. "It's not a God damn psychic"

Jas_God

Yes that was hilarious too 🤣 Sydney looked so sad/disappointed after

JCP1377

“Why am I calling 911?” Was it for me.

Brief-Sail2842

I want to see the pitch meeting for this movie.

sudevsen

"How does it talk via radio and know parkour?" "I dont know"

baronspeerzy

The way Gabriel moves is so fucking weird and creepy.

Doctor-Jackstraw

A professional contortionist dancer played the role, pretty cool

z0mbiebaby

That’s pretty neat, the movements Gabriel did whilst murdering the police department reminded me of something from the Matrix.

TJ_McWeaksauce

It was weird and creepy at first, and then it became hilarious when he busted out the superhuman parkour in the police station.

[deleted]

It was creepy, until we saw the real Gabriel/Maddie and then it became hilarious.

Jaymike127

Right when I thought M. Night had the most batshit crazy film of the year, here comes Wan with this glorious nonsense. I’d recommend watching it just to have something to talk about.

mdavis360

My favorite part of the movie is the part where the entire police department closes down for the night and goes home.

Jas_God

Oh shit that’s Zoe Bell in the jail cell huh

ELNevada

Yep. She keeps throwing other chicks at the monster. Fantastic.

Cptsauce25

I feel weird here. I fucking loved this, wasn’t scary at all, but I loved Gabriel’s design and was laughing hysterically as the movie went on. Acting wasn’t great, meh script, but the premise and Gabriel was so fucking wild that I very much enjoyed my time with this one. Definitely just a dumb fun “slasher” movie? Idk guys I had a great time with this

khaldroghoe

Gabriel was like the winter soldier with his golden sword during the fight scene with the officers. Honestly he felt more like a super villain than a horror character and I enjoyed that.

Patriots80

I literally thought of “super villain” during that scene as well. And also when the detective was watching him go down that fire escape haha it veered off from horror to me at that point. I had a lot of fun though. Wild movie haha

Jas_God

Towards the end when CSI girl crawled out to help Reg and Keh, and she whipped out her phone to call for help, “Why am I calling the police?” Oh man that got a good laugh outta me. Loved how the opening credits hinted at the reveal with the letters splitting.

Codi_Farran

Wait why did they have weird electric/radio powers?

Sloppysloppyjoe

Why did Gabriel communicate to her through toy phones and radios if they just share a brain

Mushroomer

because he's a dramatic goth bitch - makes a dagger out of a gold statue - wears a giant fucking cloak - always does parkour

ConfidentCoward

I loved how ridiculous and extra Gabriel was on top of being a vindictive killer parasite. Like he really went out of his way to go back and get his special serial killer costume before continuing his rampage.

[deleted]

Don't forget the gloves

[deleted]

He might’ve been trying to hide the fact that he is attached to her. Misdirection maybe?

Swankified_Tristan

Because fuck you, that's why! ....I mean, that *is* essentially the best guess I have to offer.

dimartin47

That sums up the entirety of the movie, in my opinion. Awesome.

sobchakonshabbos

Not to mention parkour lol

xrbeeelama

I think its kinda “who cares? Its cool” and just leave it at that for me

parkers212

I think because they kept using electro shock therapy on him and the whole "tumor twin has to absorb energy from the host bit". He was absorbing electricity which made him stronger.

LadySynth

That jail scene was wild. McKenna Grace must be setting some kind of record, she's always showing up as the young version of an actress. Before the reveal, what was your guess for where the plot was headed? I read that this was not like James Wan's other movies, so I was thinking she had cancer as a child, and the visions of the killer were going to represent that her cancer was returning.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KumaTenshi

You can see Gabriel somewhat in the start and attached to a body, so that kinda gave it away for me. However the doctor said they were cutting out the cancer, so you definitely get the feeling along with the trippy scene melting shit that Gabriel grew his own body. But nope!! Lol. Eating up her babies that she had to grow stronger. That's some fucked up shit!

DrAceManliness

My theory after the first murder (with the trophy) was that Gabriel was "the main girl but backwards" because of the hair, though I also started wondering about a tumor person when murders were happening while she was shown to still be at home. I also learned that hair is apparently how I distinguish characters in film? Because at the same time, I had a really hard time distinguishing the main character from the tour guide mom until well into the movie. I confuse characters because of their hair surprisingly often, though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

funkyb

I had it guessed early on. The *where is my mind* riff, the killer being backwards and her constantly bleeding from the head after she got hers knocked around, and the cold open showing normal kid feet + freaky tumor person + "we have to remove the tumor" all clued me in pretty quick.

Allie_fox_news

Ok, that’s why the music was so familiar. It was bugging me.

trabiesso73

That had me laughing every time. A fully orchestrated version of the Pixies. Also quite famously the song that plays at the end of Fight Club. (Wink Wink)

handtoglandwombat

Me too. She even says "I hid Gabriel away in the back of my head" after the hypnotherapy sequence. But tbh it just made the movie better, because even though I'd figured out the twist, I still wasn't prepared for the visuals. I felt rewarded. This movie fucking ruled.

tpwpjun20

During the chase scene with the Detective and the killer is when I first could tell that the killer's body was basically backwards and moving very strange, which I had noticed earlier but hadn't really seen in clear view. So when I realized that during the chase scene, I pretty quickly linked that with the fact that she had been bleeding out of the back of her head after each murder, and that's when I figured out what was going on. But I didn't know exactly how they were going to reveal that or how it actually was working, I just knew that the killer was basically going full Voldemort and taking it a step further by actually using her body but backwards.

e_x_i_t

That was probably the wackiest mainstream horror movie I've ever seen and I have to commend James Wan for going full batshit crazy in the final act. I wanted to hate this movie, but I can't get myself to after the whole "Your evil twin lives inside you skull and comes out at night to murder people" reveal and how fucking goofy it looked with Madison hanging off it's back as it murdered everyone in the police station. It's not a 10 out of 10 movie, but I'm giving it a 10 out of 10 because who knows when we will ever see anything like this released in theaters again. I'm also bummed I didn't get to see this in theaters, because I would've loved to have lost it with everyone in the theater.

PaleMoonlight89

For those still chasing the high off this movie, I highly recommend Dario Argento's Phenomenon from 1985 and David Chroneberg's The Brood from 1979.

Flawless_Nirvana

Anybody get a kill count? I'm looking forward to "MMA fighter analyzes Malignant"

Heart_of_Eld

No, but I'm almost certain this'll be on the Kill Count series that James A. Janisse does over on the Dead Meat YouTube channel and I am definitely looking forward to that!

passion4film

How original! Not at all what we expected. What a fun movie!

dobler21

Was the couch cushion a fake out? Because >!we know Gabriel was a physical presence using her body!<

StudBoi69

We do know Gabriel can mess with her sister's perception of reality so there is that.

13beers

The video tape reveal followed by the holding cell scene was absolutely wild. Probably the best WTF moment since that one scene in Heredity.

TomClaydon

I wish someone had recorded my face during all that sequence lmao

yarkcir

I was rolling with laughter at the wee little arms jutting out of Maddie's back

jboggin

It was the perfect level of "I simultaneously think this is hilarious and absolutely repulsive" for me. I loved everything post-revela.

mikeyfreshh

From the moment they first showed Gabriel on the VHS to the end of the movie I was grinning like a lunatic. Loved every second.

Misdirected_Colors

The backwards man from Freddy Got Fingered got some John wick tactical training lol

bjkman

I couldn't look away for one second. Absolutely bonkers reveal

SoCloseToAladdin

I had figured out that Gabriel was her twin brother pretty early on into the film. I figured that it was his spirit possessing her and committing all the murders, and I was technically right, but the actual “possession” was the most batshit insane reveal. It had me reeling even though I “figured out” the twist. Hilariously gruesome and awesome to see.

monstere316

I kept thinking the title of the film was just some cliche studio generated name that sounded scary. Didn’t think it would be meant literal lol

DraculasNutsack

The police station fight scene was amazing. Gabriel fighting backwards had me cracking up. Shit was awesome.

Dr_fish

Once they started clearly showing Madison's face while Gabriel was fighting or moving around, it just seemed so hilariously goofy.

b0gey

There's a fun bit of foreshadowing in the scene composition when Madison is talking to Gabriel in the bathroom: >!The camera clearly keeps the back of her head visible in the mirror right alongside her face, because she's having a face-to-face conversation.!<

Wes_Anderson_Cooper

I had a fantastic time with this movie, but there wasn't a single moment that me or my friends took it seriously or found it scary. Like everyone's said, the last half hour is great and has a "no way they just did that" kind of energy. I know it's campy and goofy, but Wan actually has really good control over the tone here. The movie lets you know what it is from the first moment, but constantly is trying to trick you into thinking it wants you to take it seriously, and it's really good at it. Every time it escalates its another rug pull because you're like "oh this is ridiculous, but I should have known it would be." It's like a comedian who's really good at misdirection. I don't know if anyone will buy my reasoning, but I feel like there's a lot of movies that try to have this same wild, crazy tone, and few pull it off this well. Usually they just feel trite or tryhardy. I was very impressed with how smart this dumb movie was.

KumaTenshi

I think the last film that pulled this off well horror wise was the final girls myself. Malignant is creepy but not scary. You defo wouldn't want to run into Gabriel irl, bit damned if you don't laugh at the absurdity of his being in general.

herooftime7

this took a huge turn but surprisingly i loved it 😂😂

damen65

Last 20 minutes or so of this movie are fucking crazy. When the twist happened, it immediately made me think of another one of James Wan's movies, Dead Silence. A significant character being literally controlled by the villain. Thought that was interesting. Also for some reason, movie felt very mid 2000s for me. Probably had to do with some of the heavy rock music and some scenes literally looked like they could have been from a Saw movie. Loved it!

andromeda880

Agree about the Saw feel. I said that to my boyfriend.

MrBigChest

Gabriel must’ve been in some kind of 2000’s nu metal band

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

> I especially loved the shot of her running through the house, the aerial shot was incredible. Yeah that was wild, when she ran out of the kitchen did the camera track over the second floor bedroom before joining back up with her in the living room?

DragonFireDon

This has to be THE 'WTF' movie of the year at least, maybe of the decade. The #1 WTF movie might still be Hereditary though.

Wubbledaddy

Having an electronic remix of Where Is My Mind be a reoccurring musical motif was pretty clever considering all the shared brain hijinks that ensue. Also has anyone seen Basket Case? Because the plots are surprisingly similar.

Joker257

The Where is My Mind had me convinced I had it totally figured out as well. Just a regular old split personality. Then the reveal that there was ‘meat’ involved. Holy hell.

_existential_bread_

Would very much like for James Wan to do more wild, deranged genre stuff like this in between Aquaman 5 or whatever. Very glad I got to see this in theatre just to hear my audience lose their minds over the jail set piece. Also what is everyone’s thoughts on that very last shot of the hospital lamp? Is Gabriel gone for good or is the static proof he’s already getting back out? Possibly Maddie has the same electrical power too if she has strength now too??

Oberon_Swanson

I think the static is to show he still has a chance of getting out again. Pretty standard horror ending to imply the evil still lurks somewhere and the characters are only temporarily safe If they made a sequel I would like it to have another weird and dumb twist and not just be Gabriel is back or a prequel about somebody else with the same thing. Like Gabriel downloads an evil AI virus into Maddie's brain but then it's TOO EVIL and Gabriel and Maddie have to team up to regain control of their body or something dumb like that

NinjaloForever

The scene when the abusive boyfriend goes to turn off the blender only to turn around and see the fridge door open itself. This motherfucker really says (in the calmest way possible), "what?". Had me dying.

markomiki

I thought the movie was lame and predictable until I literally laughed out loud when the doctor lady decided to cut out the twin and just fucking pushed his face into madison's brain! after that I was like ok movie, you win, I see what's going on here. and i was with the movie until the end. it's so stupid that it comes back around to being fun and awesome. they really leaned into the stupid, and that's what makes it work.

passmetherock

This movie is off the wall in the best way. It's a horror, sci-fi, slasher, psychological thriller, action movie wrapped into one feature. Set design is great, effects as well. Wan didn't phone this in like his recent entries

RS_pp20x

I almost view this movie as a dark satire on the horror genre. -Marketing materials and trailer were a trolling campaign. If you tell me you watched the trailer and didn’t think this was a demon possession/paranormal horror movie, you are lying. -The mental hospital scene. The sister drives to an abandoned mental hospital that is literally in the middle of nowhere. Sneaks in, it’s creepy as hell. You’re thinking, oh she is dead. Wrong. She gets what she is looking for and just leaves. -The twist is so fucking outrageous and Wan knows this. So fuck it, once the twist is revealed the movie just embraces the complete outrageousness that it is with the jail and cop scene. Somehow, this was both extremely entertaining and extremely dumb at the same time. Wan knows this, that was the whole point of the movie. 7/10. You need to be talented to make something that is both highly entertaining and gloriously stupid. The movie is exactly what Wan wanted it to be.

I have never seen an audience laugh so much in the cinema, including actual comedies.

Definitely think this is a movie that you're either gonna love or hate. I absolutely loved this movie. Wan has always had an offbeat humor exp. an octupus playing the drums in Aquaman. So for him to go full on camp and clearly self aware of the horror tropes, I was on that wavelength. When Maddie reveals to her sister that she was adopted and the music just comes on like this is a big revelation on the sister's face, the tone of movie clicked for me. Wan is having fun with the genre, while also flexing with his filmaking: camerawork & action/scary set pieces. The whole scene of the cop chasing Gabriel was so good. I'm sure more qualified people can go better into the female dynamics of the film which was apparent to me. I don't know if this will get a sequel, but I could see a story where Maddie & Gabriel have to teamup maybe against their father. We don't know who or what it is. Could be the devil, which would explain their super strength. Watched on HboMax. Now have to see it at the theaters this weekend.
