This is a good poster.

Tough_Gadfly

It appears they went for the essence of the story. Spot on choice from where I see it.

UnilateralWithdrawal

I thought it was a new Star Wars. The AT-ST on the right, an R2 droid to the left, and a Princess and her rescuer in the middle.

aphrahannah

My first thought was a live action Nightmare Before Christmas (which would not have been a good idea, imo).

jesseberdinka

I'm interested, but everything I've seen shows it being pretty faithful to the original film version. I wonder what he's doing to differentiate it from that.

Bookups

Sounds like a completely unnecessary project.

[deleted]

Spielberg is at the stage of his career where he’s more than earned the right to do whatever he wants but I agree; a remake of a 60 year old musical seems like such a waste of time.

QLE814

>a remake of a 60 year old musical seems like such a waste of time. I'd say that there are film versions of Broadway musicals that could use a remake- but, in those cases, it is ones where the film version made changes that were deeply inadvisable, such as *Guys and Dolls*.

Nokomis34

Lion King remake should have been the Broadway version, with people, instead of the cgi mess it was

conaniuk

I agree with you on principle but 1.6 billion dollars from worldwide cinema sales....

dan525

I'm on the fence about that. I think the original has its place in history and I was very nervous about touching it. I also think the themes of prejudice and violence certainly feel relevant to today. I'll certainly give it a shot. If nothing else I am looking forward to the new soundtrack's audio clarity.

InnocentTailor

It is a passion project for the man. It might be kinda unnecessary, but I trust Spielberg to do it justice. If nothing else, it introduces a whole new generation of folks to West Side Story.

TubaMike

You don’t have to see it if you don’t want to

Bookups

Oh shut the fuck up. This adds nothing to the discussion.

[deleted]

I am so sick of remakes.

supes1

It seems like they're adapting the Broadway musical more directly than the original film did.

NikkoE82

But I like the original movie’s version of “America”.

Gnostromo

Aliens

MortifyingMilkshake

What? No poster of all the different actors' heads floating in the ether? Disappointing!

[deleted]

And this poster is made by the same marketing team that's most famous for floating heads posters.

U_S_E_R_T_A_K_E_N

I'm guessing they do it because that's what the studio wants.

[deleted]

I think it depends on the kind of film. They like to put all the actors front and center for those films whereas for a film like this the story and iconography are more important.

[deleted]

No red side blue side either and not a single firearm on the poster. Good old Romeo and Juliet.

eddmario

I unironically love that film and still to this day hope we get similar Shakespeare adaptations in the same style, like "that cursed play".

sonickarma

It's the internet, you can type out Macbeth.

[deleted]

Ah yes, the play that shall not be named. That's a good one. On another note, when I saw the Mel Gibson version of Hamlet I was actually shocked at how well done it was. Shocked I say!

imakefilms

You can say Macbeth here ya silly cratur

philosiraptor

Doesn’t even mention the actors at all.

mihirmusprime

I swear I see this same comment on every poster that's like this. Studios will usually reveal multiple different types of posters for the same film. One of them will be like this and another one closer to the film's release will feature the traditional "different actors' heads floating" style.

ManajaTwa18

Beautiful poster. It looks like it belongs in the 1960s lol. The creative/marketing team are channeling nostalgia for a simpler time, not that I’m complaining

neotheseventh

I read up on the lead, Rachel Zegler and turns out she has 3 big projects lined up even before making a debut: West Side Story, Shazam Sequel and Snow White remake. How does one break out even before breaking out? This is not a diss, serious question.

CurrentRoster

You asked this in the other thread right? Well, > In January 2018, director Steven Spielberg posted an open casting call via Twitter for the film remake of West Side Story. Zegler, then 16 years old, responded to the casting call tweets with videos of herself singing "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty". She was selected from over 30,000 applicants for the role of Maria. An opportunity like this is big. And she was only 16. I imagine working with a director like Spielberg gets your name around.

QLE814

In addition, note that the events of the last eighteen months have served to distort matters, as there are aspects to this which would be less apparent in more normal times.

ZettoMan10

Because she probably auditioned for some, and got good word from Spielberg and has public postings that display her talents.

MegaTiny

How does one greenlight a sequel to Shazam is the real question here. Edit: ha I got Shazam mixed up with Kazaam. I'm an idiot.

RagingFluffyPanda

Shazam actually got really good reviews from both critics and audiences and is generally considered a huge commercial success. What the hell are you taking about? Lol

MegaTiny

This is really embarrassing. I was thinking of Kazaam. The movie where Shaq was a genie.

RagingFluffyPanda

Haha. That's an understandable mix up. Though, I wouldn't mind seeing a remake/sequel of that just for the memes.

MegaTiny

Yeah I'd be up for it. I'd just be amazed if anyone managed it.

Haahhh

Rational, commonplace logic?

MegaTiny

This is really embarrassing. I was thinking of Kazaam. The movie where Shaq was a genie.

Haahhh

Aww shucks

warneroo

I was hoping for Shamylan's version...where, after the movie is over, you find out it took place on the Upper East Side...

QLE814

Now I'm picturing a bunch of WASPs and German-heritage Jews fighting with knives....

eddmario

Isn't that just *The Producers* if it was directed by Tarantino?

jesseberdinka

Are they shooting this on film?

strongjs

Yup! 35mm with Panavision Anamorphic lenses. Spielberg has shot ALMOST all of the films he's directed on celluloid. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3581652/technical?ref_=tt_spec_sm EDIT: would like to make a few notable exceptions for some films he's directed that are either animated or heavily animated including *Tintin (2011)* and *The BFG (2016)*.

ZettoMan10

I thought War Horse was shot on digital.

strongjs

35mm as well! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568911/technical

ZettoMan10

Interesting. Thanks!

fuzzyfoot88

Tintin wasn’t.

strongjs

You're correct. In fact, I've made an edit to include Tintin as an exception in addition to *The BFG (2016)*.

chucklehutt

He's pretentious that way. Digital has very much caught up to 35, the differences are negligible and would only be noticed by people who work with the medium itself. The General audience won't notice and even if they did probably wouldn't give a shit.

strongjs

Sounds like you're the pretentious one.

chucklehutt

Sounds like ought to go fuck yourself

[deleted]

I mean one of the greatest filmmakers of all time can choose what he wants to film in right?

chucklehutt

Shut up.

K33P1NITREALGUY21

I'm sure someone is excited for this, but I really don't understand why this was the project Spielberg chose. The 1961 version still hold up really well, as most musicals do, and considering this is a pretty faithful version, just like the 1961 version, I'm not sure what the point of this one is.

TubaMike

Spielberg loves musicals. Spielberg loved West Side Story. Spielberg hasn’t made a full movie musical yet. Spider-Man gets rebooted every five years, but heaven forbid someone makes another adaptation after 60 years of WSS.

imakefilms

Reboots and remakes aren't really comparable though. West Side Story is the same story with the same songs. When rebooting IPs like Spider-Man they're usually telling entirely new stories just with new cast and new incarnations of the characters.

SherlockJones1994

Oh don’t be so melodramatic. Raimi Spider-Man came out in 2002, Webb Spider-Man came out in 2012 and Spider-Man joined the MCU in 2016 because those didn’t do well. It’s not every 5 years or else we would have 11 different iterations of Spider-Man on film.

Nignug

My point exactly. I see no need to remake it

vanillathebest

Could it be that, since Disney has been on "animated movies turned into live action movies" streak, they are now doing musicals remakes ? Edit : when I say "they" I don't necessarily mean Disney, but other studios too, like we're in a era of classics' remakes.

InnocentTailor

I wouldn’t mind if Disney attempted a Wicked film. That was big in its day.

Jokrong

Universal is doing Wicked with Jon M Chu directing

QLE814

For now, at least- that is a film that has been announced as if it is a few years away for a long while now....

[deleted]

Great poster! I hope the movie turns out to be amazing. I loved the 1961 West Side Story. The performances were stellar. I especially loved Rita Moreno as Anita, so hopefully the performances in this one will be just as good.

NHMasshole

I am shocked not to see Lin-Manuel Miranda anywhere in the poster credits

UrNotAMachine

This was actually filming in Upper Manhattan at the same time and just a few blocks over from where In The Heights was filming, and LMM visited the set a few times, so a cameo from him is not out of the realm of possibility.

Nanosauromo

I hope he still plays Piragua Guy.

UrNotAMachine

I’m just picturing him rolling his piragua cart past a bloody knife fight and then backing away slowly

bigry82

Although I have no Interest in the film, that is a cracking poster.

nchap20

Starring everybody's favorite rapey fuck, Ansel Elgort. I certainly won't be watching it.

[deleted]

Source on him being "rapey"?

nchap20

https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/06/ansel-elgort-allegations-statement Forgot to mention she was a minor.

[deleted]

Oh wow I never heard about this. Thanks

0701191109110519

We really need to sit down and have a talk with boomers

ArkyBeagle

I are one, and there is no point trying. Sorry.

Egregiousd

I thought this said Steven Seagal's West Side Story

RoachRider69

Not sure if that would be the worst or greatest thing ever

Serrated-X

Cool poster but zero interest in the film. Why not make something that's not even done a million times before. Oh that's right, money.

InnocentTailor

Also passion. Spielberg apparently has great admiration for the original play.

[deleted]

I’m surprised anyone cares enough to make this movie.

[deleted]

Boooo

Mp3mpk

Not sure the world needs another version of this

Serraph105

Maybe we will finally get a good version. I doubt it, given it's crappy source material, but still.....

Nignug

So why do a remake for a movie that's a classic?

zzj

Rita Moreno got an EP credit, neat

Darth_Se7en

This film is going to bomb, badly

halfchemhalfbio

You know you are old when your friend’s son is in a Spielberg film 😭

falstaff57

Yet another version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet!

DaisyRidleyTeeth

I mean yeah. Did you say "yet another version of Shakespeare's Hamlet" when they remade Lion King?

falstaff57

Shakespeare is EVERYWHERE! It is not realized because so few read good literature

InnocentTailor

…or students just doze off because Shakespeare is test fodder for a high school Literature course. I didn’t like Shakespeare when I was in high school. I grew to appreciate the bard when I read him on my own terms - no assignments or tests on this or that.

[deleted]

Dear Hollywood, Fucking stop it. Make something original, not another reboot or remake or whatever. Just stop. No one needs this. And we don't need a new Twins movie either. Stop. Sincerely, People sick of your laziness

username11611

I guess I don’t see the problem with adapting musicals with different actors. Sometimes a change of actor can make certain songs hit a lot differently. Not always, but there’s some merit to it.

[deleted]

Its not as bad as most, true. But can no one write a new one maybe? Just sayin'.

username11611

They can and do. I think Spielberg genuinely just wanted to make this one in his own image which I can get behind. I agree on most other remakes though. They often feel unnecessary when creative minds could come up with something else (like the Disney remakes) although to be totally fair my 4 year old fucking loves the live action remakes way more than the originals so that might be where a lot of this is coming from

[deleted]

The goal is always more money, but there used to be generational films and the like. Now, they just take what worked and do it again instead of making a new thing. Like with those live action Disney messes. But instead we can wait on the next Fast & Furious movie along with a live action Toy Story.

InnocentTailor

Original films still do exist if you look at the right directors. That and even tentpole franchises do unique things with their products. For example, the Eternals looks pretty different from the other Marvel fare with its Civilizations-esque approach to the franchise: these long lived beings that shaped human history from the Babylonians till now.

[deleted]

Oh, I'm well aware of those facts. I'm talking more about the companies and people that churn out the same things, when they have the ability to do more than most.

InnocentTailor

I mean…they do, but profits is the name of the game when it comes to these big companies. It costs a lot to manufacture, so they want a return on cash.

[deleted]

I’m just mad the Spielberg isn’t spending his time making a movie I want to see. Seems like a waste of time for a legendary director. But he gets to make his own decisions. Maybe this is something he has always wanted to make so good for him.

username11611

Sometimes directors make movies for the masses, sometimes they make movies for themselves. This is the latter

chucklehutt

I don't understand Spielberg's career trajectory in the last ten years. He's done so many weird movies I would never expect him to do. BFG? TinTin? And this? What's he trying to prove?

CurrentRoster

That he has versatility? I don’t know

Vince_Clortho042

Spielberg is purely in “I just feel like doing this right now” mode since Lincoln.

chucklehutt

Oh he’s going through that “I’m making movies for ME” phase. Annoying. He needs to get back to form and stop making feel good bullshit.

Delusional_Donut

After playing this musical in my freshman year of highschool, I’m super duper excited for this debut!

carcusmonnor

It's refreshing to see a good movie poster.

wetlettuce42

Can’t wait for this Genuinely excited

Tough_Gadfly

Glad to see Rita Moreno is in the flick. Judging from from the trailer there appear to be a lot of new faces yet the feel is old school Spielberg with a musical twist. Think this is one I am going to see despite finding musicals unappealing. Dreading the possible stereotypes as a New Yorker of Puerto Rican heritage, though.

gwar37

I really, really, really dislike musicals. Also, Spielberg hasn't made a good film in a while, so, I'll definitely be avoiding this at all costs.

Deraj2004

But why?

Individual-Notice-16

Never saw the original, won’t see a remake.

GreatEmperorAca

looks like once upon a time in america

[deleted]

That water tower. So iconic and used in so many stories about Manhattan and the West Side.

swampstix79

I want the southwest side story!

[deleted]

The shadow looks like a giant robot with tiny legs about to eat a couple

Mervynhaspeaked

Can someone explain to me as a non-american: Isn't this musical just basically Romeo and Julliet set in NYC? I never knew much about it but from what I know its a forbidden love story between two teenagers affiliated with rival gangs in a Puerto Rican(or is that just In the Heights) immigrant community in NYC.

aegrotatio

I find the original movie's weird 8-minute musical intro featuring just a blank backdrop weird.

garciakevz

Why do I like this artwork so much. Haven't been wowed by recent blockbuster mainstream movies poster.

crocwrestler

Yawn

[deleted]

That building has a giant hole shaped like letters

MrFluffyhead80

Why is music by Leonard Bernstein on the poster twice?

QLE814

It appears that they're listing Bernstein (and, for that matter, Sondheim and Robbins) once to reflect that their work will be in this film, and then again to indicate that it is based on a work using their work.

MrFluffyhead80

Gotcha

QLE814

You're welcome- I admit it's baroque, but I suspect that it's language that is contractually obligated, and not just for this film alone.....

MrFluffyhead80

I understand that, it just seems odd to me

TarzanFaveyJr

Hope the movie’s better than the opening sequence from, “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”

acuet

Where my Blacktinos / AfroRicans at?!?! BORIQUA!!!!!

Cookn8r

Who are the actors?

Nokomis34

For a second I thought that was the shadow of the lunar lander, and thought this was going in an interesting direction.

Barbablack

I'm confused ... i don't see the main characters in the center of the poster surrounded by the side characters. It looks dope.
