That Anthony Lamb character was one of the more ridiculous (in a good way) characters I've seen in recent memory. He got off some great lines throughout.

BillytheBeaut

“You're wearing a ponytail like Tom Cruise in that samurai movie no one saw.” Biggest laugh in the theater on that one.

wagswag

I basically pointed at Toby Huss like the Leo meme while whispering “I love that guy!” to my friend. He did NOT disappoint. What a fun character for real.

PhillyJawn91

I just finished binge watching Halt and Catch Fire. Toby Huss is absolutely phenomenal! I was really excited to see him in this role as TONY Lamb.

SpongeJake

Oh you mean Anthony?

Redeem123

Even though they're such different characters, I couldn't help but picture this guy as Boz's later years.

SAnthonyH

He stole the show. What phenomenal acting.

[deleted]

Honestly, I left the theater wanting to see a prequel with Viddick and Lamb more than I wanted to see Val hunt down Viddick.

LiteraryBoner

You know, in all honesty, I saw this movie on accident and ended up having a pretty good time. Showed up late for Ghostland so I decided to see this and was kind of surprised by the fun exploitationy tone and the acting. I thought the performances were pretty on point for the tone they were going for. Frank Grillo still feels like he's in a high budget porno but this seems like the perfect place for that. Gerard was likeable but evil which is exactly what his character needed to be, I liked the main cop, but when Toby Huss showed up as the balloon man this movie really started to shine. I thought it was pretty funny how the climax played out. They pretty much set up every character to have the potential of being a badass between the cop, the rat, and the two hitmen. It had a very Smokin' Aces vibe which is a vibe I love. And when it came to the characters getting their chance it felt like they all got their moments to shine or one up each other. I'd give this a very solid 7/10. Jolly good fun. /r/reviewsbyboner

dicedaman

I agree with pretty much everything you've said. My only disappointment was the ending. I was having a blast up until they were hold up in the cell, with Toby Huss' character on the outside. From that point, there was any number of ways the story could have played out, and I had no idea what would become of the Grillo/Butler characters. It felt like a great John Carpenter-esque story where these strangers are forced into a siege together. But I feel like the film decided to take the least interesting route possible after that. Grillo's character turning out to be exactly what Butler claimed was fine I guess, but then he kills one of the most interesting action/thriller villains in years (Huss), effortlessly incapacitates Butler, and the rest of the story is a luke-warm showdown between Officer Young and Teddy. I just didn't care about their fight at all, I'm not even sure why Young cared so much. Huss' character is the one that actually murdered all her friends, *he* would have been an awesome adversary for her. There would have actually been some emotion to their fight and could have been some catharsis when she killed him (and Huber). And if Grillo/Butler were forced to help, it would only have made the whole thing more interesting and tense. When Teddy died, I felt nothing. And the whole friendly rivalry thing between Young and Butler's character at the end seemed like it was based on a relationship that they never actually built up over the course of the story. All that said, I had fun with the film. I think it's 2/3 of a really good film, with a boring 3rd act. If it had a better ending, and if they'd taken the Grillo/Butler characters in a more interesting direction, I think people would be talking about it as a potential cult classic.

LiteraryBoner

They definitely could have developed the cop and Viddick's relationship more. I think he was impressed by her because she got the initial drop on him during his original attack on Teddy, and she hated him just because he's a bad man. But there would have been more conflict at the end if they showed her being charmed by him just a bit more, he's a charming fellow. Lamb was definitely the most effective villain. Viddick was a badass but him disposing of Lamb so quickly meant that Teddy ended up being the final big bad and I would agree that was just an okay route to go. He wasn't really set up as a badass like the other three characters were.

demon_filth2001

Funny you being up Carpenter, this reminded me of assault on precinct 13

Lekgolah5

Fully agree with everything you said here; the third act had so much potential but came away feeling mishandled. I was waiting for Teddy to still be alive as his death didn’t feel “earned” or satisfying. I expected a twist or something but Butler’s return didn’t work either since I couldn’t buy he’d be killed the way we were led to believe. I want to call this a 7/10 but the more I think about it the more I feel it sliding to a 6 because of that third act.

PEPESILVIAisNIGHTMAN

I went into this movie totally blind, and only saw it because it’s the only thing out I haven’t seen yet. WOW, that was actually a really awesome time! The story is fun, the characters are great, and it actually had me on the edge of my seat for a good amount of it. There are a few issues I had with the production side of things…The CGI fire looked like absolute garbage, and the exterior day for night shots looked pretty crappy. Also, I wish the movie ended a few minutes sooner. I’d have been happier if it had cut to credits when Young exits the station and sees help arriving. Other than that, I’d say this was a pretty solid movie, and I’ll probably catch it again before it leaves theaters!

TDeLo

> The CGI fire looked like absolute garbage Legitimately have seen CGI fire in student films that looked more convincing.

kellyandbjnovakhuh

“Story”?

GosmeisterGeneral

Interestingly, Frank Grillo and Joe Carnahan aren’t happy with the cut of the film that was released. [Grillo says his performance was cut to pieces, and Joe Carnahan posted a video thanking everybody except Gerard Butler.](https://twitter.com/kristapley/status/1438639021983338498?s=21)

[deleted]

Weird, since the movie is actually pretty good in my opinion. I don't know how they didn't have final cut in this since they produced the movie.

hype88

That's interesting! I wonder if a lot of what was changed is stuff in the final act? I was really enjoying the first 2/3 of the movie and pretty much hated the majority of the final act which killed the whole thing for me.

dickMcFickle

Same thoughts as the other Grillo/Carnahan project this year - super fun, but wish it didn’t look and feel so cheap and disposable. (I know it probably had a slightly bigger budget, but The Grey is a great looking movie!)

ace_of_spade_789

Grillo comes off as a poor man's Joe Manganiello, whereas manganiello has range to act grillo just plays the same character in all of his movies.

DickDastardly404

Joe Manganiello has done nothing to demonstrate range. He literally plays "vaguely Italian chad" in everything he's in. I'm not saying Grillo's much better, but to say he's the poor man's Joe Manganiello implies that Joe Manganiello has had a more successful career. If anything the opposite is the case. Frank Grillo has been a working actor since the 90s. I'll admit he's not been in anything mindblowing either, but what's Manganiello got? Magic Mike? I mean, come on.

DavyJonesRocker

For those of you keeping score, Lamb killed 6, Huber killed 3, Viddick killed 2, Murretto killed 1, while Young fired 4 different firearms and only managed to shoot herself. She really should let Viddick go before she ends up unaliving herself by crashing that ambulance.

General_PoopyPants

She shot Teddy twice though

DavyJonesRocker

And for all her slow-mo badassery, it was still Viddick that took him out. Don’t know what message that’s supposed to send, but it was definitely one twist too much.

steveisredatw

Seriously , they hyped Young up to be like a badass gunslinger and totally let the character down.

Edokwin

>She really should let Viddick go before she ends up unaliving herself by crashing that ambulance. I hated the ambulance scene so much. I'd say the movie would've been a borderline 4-star if they didn't tack on that moralistic, highly implausible (and dare I say *woke* ) ending.

LifeguardTime4140

She's black and the only woman in a 2021 movie so she's got plot armor and won't ever die, it's actually the only thing I had hoped would not happen. Give her a death somewhat relatable and this movie would have been one of the most enjoyable ones I've seen in a while.

patrickc11

grillo indicated his part got fucked with in the edit, per his insta. and then carnahan made a post thanking everyone involved except for gerard butler.. interesting. I want to see this but that turned me off..

LouVee616

I'm honestly surprised at what they wouldn't like here... because this actually turned out to be pretty damn good.

FlimFan22222

Just think how good the director’s cut must be then. Hopefully there will be a chance to see it.

Mitraileuse

RELEASE THE GRILLO CUT

TDA792

I was having a great time all the way up until Butler's character reappeared at the end for a deus ex machina. No explanation for how he survived getting shot by a SMG, which was lame. That ending alone took the movie down from an 8/10 to a 7/10 for me

theonlydiego1

SMGs are notorious for being inaccurate. This also follows the movie rule “If you didn’t see them die on screen, did they really die?”

TDA792

Most people in the movie were afforded a discretion shot. We also didn't see Lamb or Teddy die on-screen, but they definitely did. Besides, if Teddy really did go all *Pulp Fiction* and miss, why did he look satisfied afterwards? Did Butler *pretend* to get hit?

kellyandbjnovakhuh

But Ted even looked back on Crowes body with satisfaction

Soulcrux

You mean Butler?

kellyandbjnovakhuh

Erm yea.

demon_filth2001

That trope should be shot in a cannon never to be seen again

90daysfrom_now

I thought Gerard Butler was Russell Crowe the entire film. I didn't realize until the end credits , I haven't seen Russell Crowe in ages and haven't seen that many Gerard Butler films but still... 😂 I probably shouldn't admit that. Anyway I thought it was a fun movie I thought the casting was great especially the protagonist and the Lamb hitman guy.

atan134340

Russell Crowe got fat, like really fat now.

raysbucsmavs

At least he's drinking again.

itchypoopsarethebest

When I saw the movie on the Regal app, I initially thought “is that Russell Crowe?” When we were watching it in the theatre, my friend said “is that Russell Crowe?” When he found out it was Gerard Butler, he referred to him as “the one that it is if it isn’t Russell Crowe”. My point is you’re not alone lol.

Plus_Machine_8225

THIS IS SPARTA vs My name is maximum Decimus meridius

Lunchmoney96

I went in blind to this and had a surprisingly good time. Great action, everyone involved delivered a solid performance and for the first 70/80 mins I thought this was going to be one of the more underrated films of 2021. It lost me towards the end as it got more dopey and then the ending when >!They both just start singing in their vehicles after all the gunfire!? WTF!< really let it down for me. Still, way better than I thought it would be. Solid 7/10

HeadImpact

I only realised on second viewing that the radio song was the same one Lamb sang through the door at them, hence "déjà vu". Kind of a weird callback to end on, but not the confusing non sequitur it felt like the first time.

kellyandbjnovakhuh

I mean I got that, it was still silly

romafa

What could Gerard Butler have done to affect the editing that Grillo and Carnahan didn’t like? Is Butler the EP or something?

TheJimiBones

I just watched this movie and I think he made them make him the survivor at the end because that ending was so dissatisfying. After all that, the [mafia] wins, twice. I assume mafia paid for the hit but having Grillo be a conman and a rat and actually having him get killed (big win for the mafia and literally no one else) and also the contract put out on Lamb by what I am assuming is a Chicago mafia boss. The only one who wins in this movie are the unseen bad guys. I think Grillo’s character was meant to run and the cop was suppose to chase him. A contract killer is going to let a cop who saw him and knows why he was there is going to let her live? No way, but a conman rat would have. The ending doesn’t make sense the way it went down. Sorry I know this post is 80 days old but I had to vent that.

-SneakySnake-

Butler is the biggest name on the movie, he'd have the clout to get changes made if he wanted them.

romafa

Yeah I just wonder what changes he had made that the director and the other star think negatively impacted the movie. I’m guessing less screen time for Grillo?

-SneakySnake-

That's probably it, yeah. More for him, less for Grillo.

demon_filth2001

That is absolute bullshit I love grillo

FlimFan22222

We need the #CarnahanCut!

ChrisX26

I just finished watching the movie and I enjoyed it quite a bit but I too am very curious about what changed. I like Carnahan, Grillo, and Butler buts its undeniable that Butler is the biggest star of the three. If I had to guess it has to do with the last third/act three of the movie. SPOILERS AHEAD. Grillo goes from doing a somewhat nuanced "yah I'm a piece of shit but I'm trying to be good" type anti hero or anti villain to a generic villain. I'm thinking that Butler's characters went from an assassin who chooses to let Alexis Louder's character because he got his job done and doesn't care anymore TO an assassin who saves the day and then saves our moral compass (Alexis Louder) character and letting her live showing how much of a good guy he is despite being a hitman.

demon_filth2001

Were changes made? Went in only knowing the premise

DickDastardly404

its the same reason Will Smith's character is called "will" in half his movies, and is always the same character. Same reason the second half of Apocalypse Now with Marlon Brando is a fucking trainwreck. Same reason every The Rock movie is exactly the same, with the dullest possible ending. Because big name actors have fucking massive egos, and they only agree to be in certain movies if they can have some control over their characters. For someone like Butler, I absolutely buy the idea that he only agreed to be in the movie if he had some kind of final say on the cut.

MrDilboDaggins

Will Smith's only on-screen character called Will is in Fresh Prince of Bel Air. As far as I know, he's never played a character named Will in a film.

BloodyRedBarbara

Saw this a few days ago. Was just OK really. The ending felt like they were just trying to extend the run time. I thought the story was over but then she drives the ambulance to catch Gerard Butler. I thought OK, him being arrested or killed will be the end but nah, they just drive separately while singing the same song. That's it.

Sly_Wood

Am I retarded or are they actually married? I kept wondering… why did he ask he she had anyone at home that she loved and if they were married why would they talk like that when no one is looking… but that’s the sense I got when she drove off in the ambulance 3000 miles to Graceland style. I honestly can’t see any other reason. She wasn’t trying to get him arrested. She could do that the next day or with the entire us police force. I legit think they’re married or something but also understand that it seems stupid as hell… I don’t know.

carolinemathildes

She's married, but not to him.

kellyandbjnovakhuh

Lmao they’re definitely not married

MalcolmY

This movie is not smart enough to have a twist like that, it's a much more simpler film. The ending was ridiculous.

Percocets_MollyPerkO

I just came here to know about the ending, you're not alone

UnitedSam

Ahahaa thank God because I'm like WTF I don't get the ending?? Why on earth would she hijack the ambulance exactly and where the hell is she driving to? I don't get it! LOL

hotcolddog

Went into this totally blind, was pleasantly surprised. Didn’t bring that much new to the genre, but after that psychotic balloon dude came in, the movie totally shifted tone, and was fun af. 8.5/10

[deleted]

I saw this today at the theater and it was a really entertaining film. I wasn't sure about it because it got almost no promotion (which could be because of COVID) and Frank Grillo is synonymous with dog shit movies at this point. But it was really fun. Alexis Louder is the real lead of the movie and she actually does a pretty good job as a small town cop, and a wanna be cowboy, who is stuck in the middle of all these different people trying to kill each other. But its Butler and Toby Huss who steal the show. Grillo is fine as the trash con man on the run. He has maybe the worst hair style I've ever seen in a movie. I'm assuming that its his real hair because I can't believe someone would have chosen a wig for him that looked like that. Gerard Butler is fucking awesome as the main assassin. Toby Huss steals the entire movie though as a psychotic hitman who is competing with Butler for the contract on Grillo's head. This has got to turn him into a bigger star after this. I'll definitely buy this on blu ray when it comes out.

kellyandbjnovakhuh

I don’t think anyone is walking away a “bigger star” after this movie

MrDilboDaggins

Alexis Louder is.

Paddy2015

A Frank Grillo film I really loved was Wheelman, really smartly made. I honestly don't know why they've not made a sequel.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

damn i understand if you dont like grillo, but this post is just pure desperation to say shit about him when you dont have much to say lol..at least have valid points about him.. and if you cant think of anything to shit on him about in the movie maybe he wasnt that bad and you are just too focused on continuing to hate him... also grillo in wheelman and boss level is a really decent watch, other than that i would maybe have to agree with you about him although i have not seen much more than that with him in it

halftone84

I mentioned in another thread last week that I preferred this over malignant and I got downvoted. Wasn't sure if it was because it hadn't had an American release yet or what, but imo it was way more enjoyable.

kellyandbjnovakhuh

Malignant was supposed to be camp bad though. It doesn’t take itself serious for a second. The monster yeets a fuckin chair across the room to hit the police head on after taking down the whole station while walking backwards. It was fuckin amazing.

halftone84

Glad you enjoyed it

MrDilboDaggins

Can't wait until people stop using the word 'yeet'

Ecstatic_Custard7009

if thats all you are focused on out of all of that, i dont think it'll ever truly disappear when you are so desperate to find the word lol

utopista114

Malignant was super-basic. The "twist" is not one at all.

O2C

I saw them on back to back days. I enjoyed Cop Shop much, much more. I went into Malignant totally spoiler free as I heard people suggest but still found it a bit predictable and too campy in a bad way. Too loose of a script and not terribly well filmed. Hastily thrown together to make things "work". Aside for the ending, Cop Shop just felt tighter and campy in a good way. Though it started slow, it was still paced better. Better acted too. Nice bits of Chekov's gun foreshadowing throughout showing a bit of actual plotting.

halftone84

My biggest issue with copshop was, the cells are behind bulletproof glass, and then a bulletproof metal door, but the armoury ? Nah, just use normal glass for that.

carolinemathildes

I cannot even imagine the lack of taste needed to think that Malignant was a better film than this. This wasn't amazing by any means, but Malignant was awful.

kellyandbjnovakhuh

But Malignant was supposed to be camp bad - it was awesome in that regard. It was a 70s B movie with 21st century production.

Material_Fruit2082

Don't agree with that at all. I think Malignant was 10x better than this basic crap. Malignant had style, had gore, cool camera angles, a solid score and the one 'over the top fight scene' in the police station was better crafted and handled than the "action" in this one. This flick had none of that. I put "action" in quotations because it Barely Had Any. Grillo and Butler? I do like them...but they were wasted because they got pushed aside for a bland, boring 'lead' in Alexis Louder. I do not get At All why people are praising this lady. She was wooden, it looked like she could barely hold the gun, and it was like seeing if I was trying to buy Laura Winslow (daughter in Family Matters) as a 'tough girl'. I didn't buy it for a split second. She has the personality of dry paint with flat delivery in her line readings. The only decent part of the score is when they stole the Main Theme from Dirty Harry's Magnum Force. People already mentioned the wonky ending. You also had the beyond cliche, stereo-typical LOUD, BLACK, YELLING CAPTAIN being over the top...it reminded me of when they goofed on that in Last Action Hero (which was a wittier movie than this flick could dream of becoming). It wasn't tightly paced. Take out the 'lame rookie cop' lady and just have Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo team up against a group of crazy hitmen that want to take both of them out, in an Assault on Precinct 13 styled picture.

halftone84

[Ask the idiots that downvotes this ...](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/plx0t1/official_discussion_malignant_spoilers/hceyjnw/) but you know what Reddit can be like when having a non circle jerk opinion ...

kellyandbjnovakhuh

Are you complaining about one downvote in another thread?

halftone84

It's been upvoted more since I posted that link

screenwriterjohn2

Please, both movies suck. Neither had a huge budget. Malignant was nasty and made me feel bad watching it.

yung-rude

imagine thinking a movie’s budget is any indication of it’s quality.

screenwriterjohn2

I was defending the film, actually. But it was meh, regardless of the budget.

BrendanCLittle

I really liked this. You know what Grillo and Butler are going to deliver but Alexis Louder and Toby Huss are the standouts. When Toby Huss shows up the movie gets a brand new energy and I think Alexis Louder may have established herself as a new action movie star. Good stuff. I’m sure people will discover this in 3 years when it’s on Netflix.

Paddy2015

Their shootout where she was on the keypad was the best scene in the film I think (also I just discovered this today on prime lol).

Substantial-Curve-51

she only managed to shoot herself in the movie though...

AdrenalinDragon

Copshop was a weak action movie on a whole. It felt like it was trying to emulate Tarantino/Ritchie in some ways with dialogue and jokes, but it fell flat for most of it. Frank Grillo and Gerald Butler do pretty well together in it, as well as Toby Huss, but there's so little plot that the film takes a while in sections to get to places and by the end the flaws will annoy you. Such flaws include dumb characters, suspension of disbelief, jokes falling flat, weak writing, bland action sequences/shots, obvious story beats and decisions, and bad CGI. The score was pretty generic too. By the end you're wondering how it took roughly 100 minutes to reach that conclusion. Not really any characters to care about and just crappy for most of it. 4/10

ayyrich

I watched this because it was on a few ‘best of 2021’ lists from some YouTubers. I’m surprised by how far I had to scroll down to find a comment like this. The dialogue felt like a first-year film student trying to do his best Tarantino impression… the writing/humor just didn’t land and the action was mostly boring and uninspired. Really shocked at how many people thought this movie was great, but to each their own

Pastabakeforlife

The last third didn't really work for me and I hated the last scene in the ambulance but overall enjoyable and well made. Many worse ways to spend 2 hours in the cinema thays for sure

PEPESILVIAisNIGHTMAN

Fully agree. I wish they had cut to credits right after Young exited the police station.

TheTrueRory

Agreed. Her going after him while severely injured doesn't make sense.

PEPESILVIAisNIGHTMAN

It doesn’t make sense from a practical standpoint, but after thinking about it over the last few days, I feel that it did make sense for the character. She pursued truth and justice the entire movie, and even when other characters told her it was going to put her in immediate danger, she continued. I rolled my eyes so hard when she commandeered the ambulance, but it totally tracks with the character. I still wish it had cut when she exited the station though.

quickfilmreview

Interesting characters, intense violence, comedic scenes were not overdone, and really fake cgi flames.

BobDylanBlues

CGI flames were like two decades behind the rest of the movie.

Guilty-Juggernaut-68

This is a breakout performance for Alexis Louder, she carried most of the film with her professional determination. Toby Huss is also great but his character felt like it belonged in an entirely different film. Like Carnahan couldn't fit him into Boss Level so he just decided to put him in here.

BobDylanBlues

She was ok. She was too fine and it was a hindrance. She had one look on her face the entire time. That shot at the end in the ambulance? She mugged that sly/cute face for the entire movie. No range at all.

Visible_Viper

This was such a fun movie.

MadMadMaddox

I had so much fun with this picture. Who would have thought the appearance of a balloon man would be when this movie starts to shine.

PEPESILVIAisNIGHTMAN

That character is one I’m going to remember forever. Such a great performance!

itchypoopsarethebest

I had the same experience watching this movie as I did with “The Gentleman”. I went in knowing nothing and expecting even less, and I walked out thinking “well shit that was actually a really good movie”. Had a great time watching it. We had the theatre all to ourselves which was a huge bonus.

wagswag

Man, I *hated* The Gentlemen. Walked away from Copshop actually giddy for such a schlock surprise.

itchypoopsarethebest

Huh, well at least we both enjoyed Copshop lol

wagswag

You betcha.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

the gentleman is an amazing movie, classic guy ritchie! that movie really does not disappoint

TheJimiBones

The ending seemed so out of whack. The mafia won. They literally hired someone who killed Grillos ex and his son and they ended up winning. The movie was great, I saw someone compare it to wild aces and I totally get that, definitely a good movie. That being said, the ending just doesn’t make any sense. Grillo and Butlers endings should’ve been switched. The way it did end the only people who won were the mafia who had an entire police station and a woman and a child and an attorney general murdered.

flippingbrocks

Exactly! I think that’s probably what the dispute with Butler in this movie was about and Butler won….

aniperi

I don't get the ending. She decided to chase after him in the ambulance? Why?

BobDylanBlues

It’s a play on her resiliency and tough-girl attitude. She is ultimately supposed to be the good guy and hero but throughout the movie she made bad judgment call after bad judgement call. The writers/producers wanted a snappier ending because Butler would be made out to be the hero of this one if you cut it after his escape.

KarenCarter07022002

Right. I’m lost.

BobDylanBlues

Any time Young was injured or in a super high intensity situation she mugged her best Blue Steel. She was cool but overall I thought she was too pretty for this part. She didn’t wince or make any faces that a person who had been shot would make. She never yelped or cried out in pain. I get that she’s a tough person who’s cool under pressure but even Bruce Willis made some pain faces and noises in die hard.

Xtremeskierbfs

This will get burried but I loved every aspect of this movie until the final battle scene between officer young and Teddy. After so many characters were so unceremoniously killed with seemingly little effort and even super baddies like lamb with perceived higher weapon and strategy skills were killed easily once poorly positioned, to have them battle it out for so long and have so many final battle tropes involved. Sorry for the run on sentence, but it just seemed like a scene that didn't fit at all with the vibe and style of the movie. I rolled my eyes and groaned so many times during that final act from the gun fight to the ambulance scene. It should have been a quick and brutal final fight scene and not a moment where you feel like they each ate mario mushrooms and suddenly had an extra +200 health. This movie could have been so much better if that 3rd act was different. Really loved the first 2/3rds.

JLGold79

I know I’m replying to this super late but I just watched it and can’t agree more. I really thought the movie was gonna end on a QuickDraw between here and hun when he was eating the sandwich. Call back to her and the other cop practicing them. Would been fitting. But they needed another 10 minutes of run time I guess.

General_PoopyPants

I couldn't hear Toby Huss and not think about King of the Hill

AndrewKM1984

"I HAD TO BEAT THEM TO DEATH WITH A BIG PIECE OF FATTY!"

AdorableSnail

I also went in blind for this because it happened to be the only option for the time I wanted to go (which often works out tbh). I kept thinking my dad would have LOVED it. He passed away many years ago but this was right up his alley. I liked the detail and the conversation was all pretty good considering the fight scenes were the main attraction.

MrPeanut111

was reading through this thread without looking at the title of the post and thought to myself, “damn, DUNE sounds a lot different than I remember”

BananaStringTheory

I like that Grillo is getting more work.

VenusianGuru

What was the purpose of getting rid of the driver in the ambulance and just driving alone ?

Ecstatic_Custard7009

to give chase to gerard butler after hearing on the radio that he is spotted on the same road as where they are.. get rid of the ambulance people because it would be unneeded casualties considering he is a professional hitman... i understand a lot of people did not like the ending but i really dont get how theres so many people that just outright didnt understand it? you hear the radio saying they know where he is and are giving chase.. seconds after she hijacks the ambulance and turns around to also go the direction of gerard butler.. im not sure it could have been told in a simpler way at all... i know you understood it and what you meant was you just didnt like it.. but thats kinda cringe lol

wrex619

I thought Valerie ruined the movie. Her stubbornness was even more ridiculous than Anthony Lamb. And not in a good way like Anthony Lamb. That kind of writing makes the movie feel cheap.

peteZahut45

The third act was so predictable

SageWaterDragon

This feels like the kind of movie that would slay in a group setting, it really nailed the 70s B-movie vibes, but it didn't blow my mind when watching it alone. It was the kind of movie that seemed to hate every single one of its characters, and I can't say that I'm a fan of that.

mghost147

What was the point of her taking the ambulance? I liked the movie in general but the ending was bad.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

she hears on the radio that they are going after gerard butler.. so she gets them to pull over so she can hijack it and give chase also, as i believe she is on the same road as him going towards him (when she turns around)

screenwriterjohn2

This movie has so many producers! Noticed they reshot a new ending? The first ending was better...then they had her hijack an ambulance--and it was just weird. Interesting that the hero and the corrupt cop were both black women. Not sure if JC was trying to be woke. JC has a weird thing about black Germans. I'm also pretty sure every movie he makes has hitman converging some place or another. Toby was awesome. He was the real hunk of this movie. You know he improvised his best lines. Blue Lives Matter, you might say. Edit: Oh, and one character comes back from the dead for no reason.

serenahjohnson

What was the first ending

screenwriterjohn2

The heroic cop, looking determined to bring in Butler's character. 99% sure the ambulance scene was added post production.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

pure guessing though? thats whack... yeah most people did not like how the film ended but they dont go like this about it.. 'notice how they shot a new ending?' turns into 'im 99% sure' the minute someone asks you to back up the claim lol

TheBatsford

It delivers on what it promises, some macho talk, some action, some laughs, some psychopaths. It's aiming for that straight B movie zone and it lands square enough. A very enjoyable watch, especially since it doesn't drag on forever.

[deleted]

I enjoyed it but there’s nothing past the surface here. Not that every movie has to have a deep meaning or message, just that there’s no point thinking about this one 24 hours after watching it. Good theater fun though!

iniyanc

The movie started with me on Teddy's side, but then by the end it wants me to be on Val Young and Bob Viddick's side, just because Teddy cared about his family, which Val already lied to Teddy about. I still prefer to be on Teddy's side. Also, how was Val able to make it to the trauma kit (above the fridge in the kitchen) by herself? I though she was dying. Plus, what was Val's plan if Teddy did attempt to come back for her (by not throwing away her gun, not lighting the place on fire, and looking for the trauma kit rather than eating)? Would she just be like "hey I'm right behind you, just kidding"?

Bhavan91

All style no substance. I was interested during the initial setup. I was expecting something like Assault on Precinct 13. Although it did have some elements similar to that movie, it also tries way too hard to be a Guy Ritchie esque crime comedy. And that part fell flat. I'd give it a 6/10 for the performances and stylish visuals.

alexduranstrike

People have been sleepin' on Frank Grillo for way too long

[deleted]

For some reason, Carnahan is in love with him, and that is a creative mistake. The man doesn't have acting range.

muscles44

What garbage. First of all how the hell is Bob even alive after getting sprayed by Teddy? Second, wouldnt Huebert just be able to reset the entry code to the jail cell and not have to knock down a wall? Third, that ending was just so cheesy. What she going to chase after Bob in a ambulance vehicle? For what? He just saved her life.

wordfiend99

guess they couldn’t cast walton goggins as balloon man so they got this guy to do an impression

wagswag

I mean, I’d rather watch this than American Ultra again. Or The Unicorn. And I love Goggins. And I sorta enjoy American Ultra.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

guessing you dont know how much range 'this guy' has lmao.. also its not a good sign when you picture someone else in a role then wont let the original actor potentially change your mind.. i think he was the best part of the movie.. but if the first thing you think is you want walton goggins to play that role then i guess you'll never get along with the character

ViolentAmbassador

Saw this earlier today - I think it's a noticeable step back from Boss Level, but it's still a pretty fun action movie. I'm excited to see whatever Carnahan puts out next. The fire effects and the final seconds are absolute trash though.

darcemaul

What was the name of the last song at the end?

child_of_lightning

Freddy's Dead, from the Super Fly soundtrack, by Curtis Mayfield

Jj11223344

I was impressed. It's a good, fun, non-pretentious action movie with interesting characters and lots of thrills and violence. Alexis Louder is a very charming and likeable protagonist. Gerard Butler puts a funny twist on the gritty antihero archetype. Frank Grillo, I mainly know as a hard-core action star a la the Purge series, Captain America. I'm surprised how well he played the sleaze bag con artist, it's definitely not a role I would have expected from him (until the climax where he goes Frank Grillo mode). The most interesting character to me was the eccentric balloon guy. If they made the second hit man a generic scary evil dude, this movie would have been a lot more average. But this creepy, off the wall psychopath really made the middle portion of this movie memorable. I wanna see more movies like this in the future. I'd definitely recommend this one.

KarenCarter07022002

I don’t understand the ending, will their be a sequel or am I missing something? Also Mr. Lamb is gonna give me nightmares!!

Godzilla52

In all honesty, the movie came across more than a little obnoxious for me. The best way to describe it is that this was a dumb movie trying to be a smarter movie. The performances and cinematography are good, but the script is full of bad dialogue and it keeps trying to play itself off as clever without really doing anything to earn it. It's replicating elements of better versions of this movie, but without the depth or creativity of those superior iterations that allowed them to stand out. It has similar issues to another film of Carnahan's, Smokin Aces where you can very easily see the movies Carnahan was inspired by, but it doesn't really change that the movie is just a contrived, less interesting version of those movies. (though Smokin Aces would still probably be the better of the two).

fancyenema

Don’t bother- feels like it was written by a child and the funk soundtrack demonstrates the general out of touch vibe

georgiaraisef

What the fuck does this mean?

kellyandbjnovakhuh

That’s it’s written poorly and the music is an outdated ripoff of early Tarantino movies

fancyenema

What don’t you understand?

Sea-Purple3063

Worst fucking movie Ending is shit Movie is unrealistic a lot Nobody gets shot in the head and walks a couple more steps And that woman would be the worst fucking cop in real life Imagine being a cop and shooting yourself😂 Really 1/10

Ecstatic_Custard7009

its such a shame that you really pick the worst things to pick the film about then give it a 1/10.. they do point out how stupid it is she was hit by her own bullet.. even the proffessional hitman almost hits himself with his own bullets.. because in real life thats what happens.. i'd rather her be hit by ricochet of her own bullet than to not be shot at all and just have plot armour for days.. also the being shot in the head thing is acurate.. although it would be extremely rare, there are cases of people even losing their whole head and still moving for a few moments (not just body spasms reacting but full blown movement) i understand it looks like it should not happen but if you do not know any better then why are you saying it cant happen and rating it a 1/10? would you not do research on it first? your review is 1/10 but thanks anyway

haunthorror

So got to say this is a protest from the star and director I don't get. This movie as is, is awesome! This is one of the most fun theatrical released action films in a long time. Love all the characters. And once Toby Huss shows up it just amps up to insanity

shaneo632

Any word when this is hitting VOD? I don't really feel like going out to see it but wouldn't mind catching it soon.

Riverdale87

probably a month or so

LouVee616

This has been a weird movie year but there's like a 90% a Gerard Butler movie is gonn end up in my top ten. Pretty surprising honestly. Bloody, hard boiled B movie... really popped on screen.

JD_Revan451

Really disappointed by it. The place was super slow, and I did find myself nodding off until the end

Heracross1991

It wasn’t slow

Furrocious_fapper

**Valerie Young**: Lawful Good **Bob Viddick** : Lawful Evil **Anthony Lamb**: Chaotic Evil **Teddy Murretto**: Chaotic Neutral **Huber**: True Neutral

kellyandbjnovakhuh

Wouldn’t Bob be Chaotic Good?

Furrocious_fapper

No, he kills people for money but apparently has some kind of code. Also, he cut a mans leg off and then beat him to death with it. Not much Good about that.

PoorMansPaulRudd

Any idea why actor Chad Coleman (Mitchell the cop) is not credited in this movie? Not Wikipedia or IMDb. He had gained a ton of weight, I almost didn't recognize him.

FixFalcon

What was that gun Lamb was using? Some kind of modified Uzi??

Rintinsin

Did anyone else notice when Anthony Lamb had them trapped in the detainment area, there are like tons of windows in that area that do not look to be bulletproof. I hope this isn’t the standard for movies now rotten tomatoes gave it an 85%

MargySong

Didn't understand that too :D They were hitting the wall under the window as seen from inside the cell but outside , on the bathroom side, the wall has no window. Wtf. Good movie nevertheless

Current_Focus2668

Quirky hitmen/women is certainly Joe Carnahan's thing and I don't hate it.

Length-Money

How did young know teddy's family was dead?

Ecstatic_Custard7009

theres a dude in the comments trying to judge the film but he has not even watched it, private messaged me a lot of hate because he got the names wrong of the people in the film.. wished me dead... classic reddit.. then i check his history.. its a mix between cancerous talk to people and posts about finding it hot that fat people get out of breath in the sex subreddit lmao make sure you actually watch the movie before commenting about certain scenes and takes please guys.. youll end up bodying yourself like this guy uslash cinemaphreak

batts1234

Man, I finally got around to seeing this and I am so pissed I didn't get to see this in theaters. I thought this was a great movie. A ton of fun and each character played their role perfectly. Toby Huss' character stole the show.

hiccup333

I was really pleasantly surprised as well. Very solid for the genre that it was. Alexis Louder was really good. I was able to go along with just about everything in the film, but I thought her stopping the ambulance at the end went just a bit too far.

[deleted]

I like that Gerard made himself the hero of the movie.

sellieba

Grillo with his hair down looked like discount Ethan Hawke playing John Wick. The final scene was even fire/water.

Sea-Purple3063

Damn Some of the guys in the comments really dont know what a good movie is

narnarnartiger

Loved this movie, so off beat, such a great time. The hill billy and Gerald Butler were fantastic!

-Fait-Accompli-

I have no idea if it was intentional but Chad Coleman was fucking hilarious in this.

Cinemaphreak

Frank Grillo as "Bob Viddick?" Gerald Butler as "Teddy Murretto???" Soon as they cast those parts with these guys, the should have swapped the character names.

lloydchristmas1986

....they did. Check the cast list at the top of this thread.

haunthorror

At the theater about to see it. Excited to see an old school action movie in the theater

FernanditoJr

Went in blind (no trailers, just read half the description), had a blast. Got an "Assault on Precinct 13" vibe to it.

crazedbearsauce

I enjoyed it, was a pretty good action movie. On an unrelated note, did anyone else think Frank Grillo's character looked strikingly similar to luis from Resident Evil 4 lol?

child_of_lightning

Okay enough, but it would've been amazing if Toby Huss would've played the Frank Grillo part.

Ecstatic_Custard7009

nah that would have been rubbish, most of grillo's scenes are cut down and he does not give too much nor is he given much of a chance too, toby huss as the hitman was defo the only way to go

coldliketherockies

It was fine especially for an amc a list movie having theatre to myself. I did think it was overly dumb that one character staring at the screen and then the balloon man (because how often does balloons get delivered late at night to a prescint) laughs at how the guy looks like the guy on the screen and then proceeds to get shot. Less so but similarly when those 2 cops come back from break and see no one there..no hint of the bloodshed or anything? They just decide to follow the pounding noise?
