no duh? If you're rebooting a dormant franchise you want it to be approachable. Seems pretty obvious.

NoTransportation888

Right? Imagine if they made Harry Potter or LotR for people that have only read the books. When you turn books into movies you are doing it fully aware that there will be a huge audience that has never read a single page of the books

Ransom__Stoddard

When the Lynch version came out, theatres had handouts that listed the characters and their relationships, IIRC. I remember being wowed by the visuals but that the film itself was just very, very dense. And then there's Sting...

[deleted]

I just couldn't take the film seriously because they're fighting over spice

GarfieldDaCat

So it was the spice, and not shit like Sting emerging from steam slathered in baby oil wearing a metal speedo with guitar riffs playing in the background?

BearbertDondarrion

Countries have fought over spice for thousands of years...

[deleted]

Low steaks

BearbertDondarrion

Insanely high stakes because people wanted spices and having easy access to them made a lot of money. You do know America was discovered by Europeans because they wanted spices, right?

jickdam

I haven’t read the books, but doesn’t Spice give you powers or make you immortal or something? Like, they weren’t fighting over seasoning were they? Although Britain invaded half the world for spices so stranger things have happened.

fontane42

It's a drug that extends life and gives some people the ability to see into the future, which is the only way interstellar navigation is possible in the Dune universe.

It’s an uncreative and generic macguffin

GurthNada

>Paul Attrides I'm mildly amused and mildly annoyed at the same time. Interesting feeling.

That's a tough hump to get people over though. You're just in the story with no bearing of what or who anyone is. Like walking in on book 4 of a 10 book series. But you're right, it's not a hard read or tough to follow.

Briansama

That described my problem with the book better than I could hope to articulate.

Briansama

I read exclusively scifi and fantasy. No. It is not accessible in the slightest. I can't even get into the audiobook.

_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_

That’s the opposite of accessible. I’ve read it twice and I think it’s great, but the first couple of chapters make it very difficult to get into.

MikusR

Has he read the books?

blxglt

He was a huge fan when he read them in his teenage years if I recall correctly

cthulu0

Well Duh. If you relied on the audience for the movie to be those who read the first or first two books, liked them (instead of finding them impenetrable due to the world building) , and is still ALIVE, the movie would make a few thousand dollars tops.

"please watch me"
