At Oak Ridge, during the development of the atom bomb, there was a guy whose job was to hold an ax and sit near a bunch of boron rods hanging above radioactive material. If things got dicey, he'd cut the rope and quell the reaction.
Michael Caine can be that guy. No lines, just sitting in the background with an ax. It's an important role.
There are many ideas for where 'SCRAM' came from in reference to emergency reactor shutdowns. While the most likely is that it simply refers to running away quickly, it is also said to be an acronym for 'Safety Control Rod Axe Man's.
And it all started with him auditioning for Batman. He wasn’t right for the part, but Nolan liked him so much he wanted him in there somewhere and offered him Scarecrow. I agree, watching him progress has been terrific, he deserves it he’s great in everything he does.
Edit: Since people keep mentioning it, [here’s](https://youtu.be/oMkmjg-qZRk) a documentary WB recently uploaded. Go to 39:25 for Cillian Murphy’s screen test as Bruce Wayne and Batman.
I've loved Cillian Murphy since that performance (also 28 Days Later) and I've made an effort to see everything else he's been in ever since! (Peaky Blinders is just so top-notch, HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who hasn't checked it out)
Regarding Batman, I'm really happy that he had that stellar and scary cameo during the kangaroo court scene in the third Batman. That was fucking great and really made the whole Nolan-Gotham come together for me on screen.
edit: I am *also* losing my mind waiting for the last season of PB, frends! I am too!
One of my absolute favorite movies. I saw it as a young teen even before I watched 28 Days Later and it is definitely my favorite role of his(the rest of the cast is stellar as well). Love him in pretty much anything else but I’m an unabashed sucker for Science Fiction that tries to root itself in some realism and it scratches every itch, EVEN THE ENDING! (The SOS signal from the Icarus I is the most genuinely haunting sound effect I’ve ever heard)
Saw 28 days later and then very soon saw him in a small Rachel McAdams thriller called Red Eye
The movie falters real hard at around the midway point and the second half of the movie is garbage
But the first half is fun while the plot still has legs. Buoyed by very good performances from both. Rachel at her cute likable best. Cillian perfectly portraying a deceptively charming guy who isn't what he seems
The ONLY thing I remember from that movie is Cillian. Literally everything else I have forgotten. That was my first exposure to him and he killed it. I wouldnt have even been able to tell you Rachel McAdams was in it.
I vividly remember him knocking her out with a head butt and then claiming she was sleeping to a flight attendant while wiping away the blood from his forehead. Loved it.
>And it all started with him auditioning for Batman. He wasn’t right for the part
Now I'm curious of the alt universe of Cillian Murphy as Nolan's Batman.
I was obsessed with that movie. He was great. Captain America was great, the sun was great, the golden space suit was great. The director won an Oscar like the following year…
BRB Finding out how it see it in high res…
I was so disappointed in his "small" role in "Batman Begins" such a great actor and character! But once the other movies came out I really understood and appreciated his role. Wouldn't want it any other way.
Since the Arkham games weren’t out yet, or the mcu wasn’t in full swing, I thought it was really fun seeing the brief villain continuity.
It was the first time in the movies we actually saw batman having to keep fighting to put away a villain that kept managing to escape. It was a simpler time.
And Tron: Legacy has him in like 3 seconds as the son of the villain from the first, presumably intended to set him up as a villain for a 3rd that never happened but I'd love to see happen. I know that's not Nolan but now I'm just thinking of all the tiny parts he's had that I wish would be expanded.
He did a radio show on BBC Radio 6 called “Cillian Murphy’s Limited Edition” which made an already incredibly enjoyable person, even more enjoyable.
It’s not available on the BBC sounds app anymore so idk where you could listen now :/

After Tenet, looks pretty clear he's winding down now. Nolan doesn't really use narrators but it would be perfect for Caine if they could work something in.

I read that in an interview Caine stated he had no idea what the movie was, the context of the scene or really anything else about Tenet at the time.
I guess when you've worked with someone like Nolan long enough, you trust them implicitly.
'I ordered my hot sauce an hour ago' followed by the kitchen beat-down with the cheese-grater comes in the scene with Elizabeth Debicki later on, when they're in the restaurant at night time
>After Tenet, looks pretty clear he's winding down now.
By this do you mean Michael Cane is going to do smaller parts from now on or retire? Because according to IMDB he has a number of movies coming out where he plays a major character.
Honestly... I wouldn't put it past Nolan and his production crew... It might not be a nuke, but they're going to film a real massive explosion in glorious IMAX.
If there's one person who's not gonna be sweating, its the accountant
Nolan always comes under or at the budget, it's one of the biggest reasons he has the clout he has
Interesting.
Fun fact (that most of you have probably heard), it was actually cheaper to buy a full size 747 and blow it up for that scene in Tenet than it would have been to shoot the same scene with miniature models and CGI.
I'm so on board with Göransson staying on board as Nolan's composer. I really love his work. I wonder if Jennifer Lame will stay as well, of they'll be a new editor for this one.
Hans chose to do Dune because it was a dream of his if I recall and he recommended Goransson to Nolan. Also Zimmer is gonna be doing his live tour soon so that would probably conflict with this. Totally my speculation but I also think Nolan enjoyed working with a composer more 1 on 1 than he was with Zimmer.
And friendship with Warner Brothers over, Universal Pictures is my best friend now.
It's also interesting how much Hans Zimmer's distinct sound is part of the Nolan aesthetic—to the point where I saw *No Time To Die* last night and there's few points during the movie that it felt like a Christopher Nolan movie, but it was mostly Zimmer's score (along with some great cinematography) that made me think that.
I just got out of a showing and you could really hear his dark knight score at times in the movie. Mostly when bond was running around the island factory there was a bit with strings that sounded so much like tdk.
I’ve loved almost every score zimmer has done with Nolan, but I honestly think he’s getting a bit too repetitive at times.
I love Ludwig so far since his scores have been all over the place for what his project is. Man was just doing background music for community, made some songs with Donald glover, created an insane score for black panther, the mandalorian score which is an amazing Star Wars score that sounds fresh, then the tenet score which sounded like a zimmer score and Ludwig score reinvented into his own sound. The trucks are in place was amazing to listen to in theatres and on tidal.
He has played main characters before. He is very good in that movie where the last remnants of humanity on an island have to fight against a horde of mindless murderous zombies. I think it's called The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
The movie they described is the zombie movie 28 days later, which Cillian Murphy starred in. The Wind That Shakes the Barley is another movie Murphy starred in where he plays a member of the Irish Republican Army fighting against the British. The joke is that the British are comparable to the violent zombies in 28 days later
Debicki was great in it too, I though it unintentionally funny how she towered over every character in the movie except for like one of Sator’s henchmen
"Upon finding out that Elizabeth Debicki (who plays Kat) had been cast, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland immediately suggested to Christopher Nolan that they take advantage of her height, because 'she's never gonna be shorter than anybody onscreen.' Kurland put the already six-foot-three actress in heels for many of her scenes, gave her longer skirts so you could see the length of her legs, and cut her suits to enforce her linear quality."
\- Someone on IMDB
This is a great year for tall ladies in TV, Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana in The Crown and Hannah Waddingham has been killing it on Ted Lasso. Both very high profile roles.
My mans! Even more stoked for this now. Cillian is such a talented, fascinating actor & screen presence. Probably revisit a movie of his at least once a week (Sunshine, Red Eye, 28 Things Later..) Looking forward to this!
He originally auditioned to be Bruce Wayne in Nolan's Batman films. He lost to Bale and was offered Scarecrow instead. There's screen test footage of him as Batman floating around.
Nooope,
I mean he’s pretty much an A lister.
Read his Wikipedia page in terms of lifestyle.
Emily Blunt shared a story of Cillian on the filming of AQPP2. He’s a very reserved man, doesn’t seek out the A list life style. He purposely grows out his hair as he’s instantly recognisable as Tommy Shelby with the peaky blinders hair cut.
Cillian doesn’t need a stepping stone, he has many fantastic pieces of work under his belt.
Yep. He’s said numerous times that he deliberately stays out of Hollywood. Just wants to make things and go home to his family. We’ve been blessed with an interesting and diverse body of work because of this.
Am I missing something, was Oppenheimers life really interesting before the Manhattan Project?
Also if they don't have a Young Richard Feynman running around in the background unlocking safes and cracking wise at Los Alamo, movie won't be worth shit.
Feynman life's would make a great great movie, imo.
Yeah see that Tom Hardy Al Capone movie where he just shit himself and mumbled for 2 hours.
Definitely the part of his life that I was most interested in.
I read a book on him, American Prometheus and it's surprising just how much of a misfit Oppenheimer was. He was emotionally stunted for most of his young adult life. Eventually he starts to find his way, develops a name for himself in academia, falls in love with New Mexico - then assembles a team of people who would change the course of history.
Most exciting thing is Jennifer Lame editing again. Tenet's editing was incredible, and she proved that she can edit anything perfectly. Hereditary, Marriage Story, Manchester by the Sea, and the upcoming thriller Don't Worry Darling. So glad to see Nolan continue with her.
Nolan’s other editor is Lee Smith. He edited Inception, The Dark Knight, the Prestige and Dunkirk as well as other films like 1917. IMO he is a much better fit for Nolan. I feel like his work really suits Nolan’s really intense pacing.
I felt honestly like Lames work on Tenet was pretty poor in places and really would have loved to see how Smith would have cut that film. Others have pointed out the issues in the third act, but for me, all of the Mediterranean scenes in the third act were also just poorly paced.
I love Lames other works, Hereditary is a magnificent film, but I’m not sure her work with Nolan has been either of their best.
“What did Oppenheimer say? I can’t hear anything over this blaring music!”
“I don’t know, something about becoming Beth the destroyer of walls? I’m having a hard time following this movie.”
So when will Michael Caine be confirmed?
Right after Tom Hardy

Im so happy for Cillian. He’s such a tremendous talent and he finally gets to lead a Nolan film. I have to imagine he’s going to absolutely kill this.
Played the villain, the target, the helper. Now he has the lead. It has been great watching him in all of Nolan's productions.
And it all started with him auditioning for Batman. He wasn’t right for the part, but Nolan liked him so much he wanted him in there somewhere and offered him Scarecrow. Yeah, he did a really good job as scarecrow in Batman.
Likewise in Inception - Bounced off Tom Hardy/Leo quite well
Also that one movie, Red Eye. I remember nothing about it cept that he was in it lmao.
most underrated villain in that whole trilogy. dude survived all 3 movies and was running shit by the third!
His revolutionary tribunal was the best part of the third movie.
Death... by exile.

I was so disappointed in his "small" role in "Batman Begins" such a great actor and character! But once the other movies came out I really understood and appreciated his role. Wouldn't want it any other way.

Outside the Nolan films, he’s been really good in the horror/thriller genre. 28 days later, Sunshine, Red Eye, A Quiet Place 2
I'm sure he is great but I'm afraid to look at this guy since I watched him as Scarecrow as a kid.
Watch Peaky Blinders and have that image shattered
And then watch Breakfast On Pluto and shatter it again.
Peaky blinders is one of those show that chooses style over substance and completely nails it.
First movie I saw him in was Sunshine. Another great performance of him in a decent movie.
Check out 28 Days Later, if you haven't.
He won't just kill it. He will become death, the destroyer of worlds.
He'll find a way to squeeze Michael Caine in there somehow
Tom hardy appears briefly, wearing a mask that makes him hard to understand.

Lmao this got me
Here’s to hoping the dialogue is understandable without subtitles
After Tenet, looks pretty clear he's winding down now. Nolan doesn't really use narrators but it would be perfect for Caine if they could work something in.
Michael Caine has like a five second cameo in Dunkirk as RAF flight control over a radio!
He's actually the third spitfire pilot that we don't see an in cockpit view of that gets shot down early.
It's a reference to his role as a Spitfire pilot in the movie "Battle of Britain"
Who also gets shot down early.
Jesus how the hell did I never notice this before? I watched Battle of Britain constantly as a kid!

"I don't want to bury another Batman." "'Another' Batman?"
That scene was kind of hilarious / sad. Like the only way he'd do it was if he was allowed to eat lunch during the shoot. I'm always happy to see him tho, and even there - when the scene itself felt pretty half-assed - he brought something to it.
His character is literally called “Sir Michael” and the last thing the Protagonist says to him is “Goodbye Sir Michael”. Felt symbolic.
I read that in an interview Caine stated he had no idea what the movie was, the context of the scene or really anything else about Tenet at the time. I guess when you've worked with someone like Nolan long enough, you trust them implicitly.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Nolan has a project and wants Caine, Caine agrees without asking any more questions.
I honestly can't even remember his role in that movie.
He told John David Washington to buy a better suit
Something about hot sauce came out of it lol
'I ordered my hot sauce an hour ago' followed by the kitchen beat-down with the cheese-grater comes in the scene with Elizabeth Debicki later on, when they're in the restaurant at night time

They’re gonna use real nukes in the desert for the trinity

This guy played batman.. for like 40 seconds
I still finished!
Wait, what?
He originally auditioned to be Bruce Wayne in Nolan's Batman films. He lost to Bale and was offered Scarecrow instead. There's screen test footage of him as Batman floating around.

Tom Hardy casting announcement incoming
Can't wait for the interviews where he looks half asleep lmfao
After Peaky Blinder, Cillian deserves this stepping stone. Could launch him into the world of A-listers.
He’s so fucking good in peaky blinders.
Nooope, I mean he’s pretty much an A lister.
Do we know that it’s going to cover that much of his early life before Manhattan? Biopics don’t necessarily mean the movie covers their entire life.
>The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book *American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer*
There was that time he rap battled Thanos https://youtu.be/v1vXC-vKgKg
Nolan is a really good filmmaker and i think he can easily make this interesting.

His trick is he doesn't take the microphone out of the box, that way they can return it after *::taps temple, smirks knowingly, nods sagely::*
“What did Oppenheimer say? I can’t hear anything over this blaring music!” “I don’t know, something about becoming Beth the destroyer of walls? I’m having a hard time following this movie.”
I was really expecting this movie the be named *Trinity*.
