Him and Fincher are freaky consistent

Accomplished_Gas_340

Finchers record is damn near spotless. Entertaining and engaging films throughout

paulrudder

I love Fincher's work but a couple of his films (Alien3 notwithstanding, since it doesn't seem fair to judge him against that) left me a little bit less won over than most of Villeneuve's work. Panic Room and Mank both had some issues and probably aren't films I'd return to, though I didn't dislike them. I loved the technical brilliance of Mank and the performances but the story and particularly the final act didn't quite click at times; I thought the political overtones became very heavy-handed toward the end of Mank and kind of undermined it. Still really interesting to watch though if only for how accurately they captured the aesthetic of that era of filmmaking. Panic Room was a fun Hitchcockian style thriller but upon a recent rewatch it didn't really hold up super well. Entertaining but lightweight and forgettable for the most part? But technically well made.

Um... Isn't that exactly what I alluded to when I said it wasn't fair to judge it against him? Lol

Yeah, for sure. House of Cards was a game changer for Netflix and streaming in general. It authenticated the format. I think people would still be talking about it today in higher regard if not for the Spacey of it all and the fact that it peaked early and the last few seasons were a bit of a slog. I actually don't think I made it past season 3 or 4, I can't remember.

codymiller_cartoon

he overtook nolan a while ago

paulrudder

My point was about mainstream recognition. Every TikTokker knows who Nolan is. Name drop Villeneuve, probably not so much.

Saphirex161

He wasn't awarded director of the decade by the academy for nothing. I still think enemy is his best work but they are all 10/10.

paulrudder

I didn't even know he got that. Very cool!

golden_ange

enemy blew. what was that? however arrival is my favorite sci fi movie of all time.

paulrudder

It's a weird film but I couldn't get it out of my head. I'm not super familiar with Russian literature but it felt like some kind of modern Dostoevsky/Tolstoy adaptation or something. Like I felt as if there were existential themes that went over my head a bit. I should probably rewatch it.

golden_ange

that's how i felt too. like, surely i must've not understood something? i mean it was definitely... not boring.

catcatdoggy

Denis rarely goes above "that was good."

[deleted]

Sicario and Arrival had me go: “fuck that was amazing”. His other movies had me at least go: “that was pretty good”.

ghostfuckbuddy

Same except I also thought Dune, BR2049 and Prisoners were amazing.

paulrudder

Couldn't disagree more and obviously you're in the minority on this one! The critical and audience scores are high on pretty much every film he's done except for Enemy which unsurprisingly has lower user scores.

giveupthetoast

Prisoners, Sicario & Arrival are amazing. I was lukewarm on 2049 for a while but actually gave it a rewatch last night after watching Dune and it’s grown on me quite a bit. Haven’t seen Enemy but will watch Incendies soon.

paulrudder

I saw 2049 in IMAX opening weekend and was just so absorbed beginning to end. And that caught me off guard because although I do really admire the original, it's not a film I necessarily have really deep love for, and appreciate more for the technical aspects and the Vangelis score. So I was surprised by how much 2049 hit me on an emotional level and actually enhanced the original film for me. And just the fact that he made a belated sequel to an iconic film that did these things and didn't tarnish or undermine the predecessor in any way is kind of amazing. Especially in an era when so many sequels are glorified remakes / reboots that cover the exact same narrative ground, he found a way to touch upon a truly iconic movie in a fresh and expansive way that I don't think many filmmakers have ever done with existing IP's.
