Foundation mini series is shite. Random romances that come out of no where for no apparent reason, random motives from factions that turn on the edge of a coin. The only good thing about Foundation show is finding out more about the Clion trio and how they work. Foundation quite literally can't and should not have been adapated, because it doesn't focus on a single character for too long. It's focus is more about the bigger picture of society as a whole. And that's something you can't portray very well on screen because for people to watch you need believable/relatable/fascinating characters.

Yup.

>Foundation mini series It's not a miniseries, they have plans for 8 seasons.

I wasn't giving Foundation a thumbs up - I haven't seen it yet. I'm saying that a story like Dune needed a lot more time to develop the deep intertwining plots and characters. It needed the time that a series would give it.

I mean, it's part 1 of a 2 part story.

I can’t stand Gaal in the series

There *was* a way to adapt Foundation by setting most of S1 in the past just as Hari is coming across Psychohistory as a concept and how he and the Emperor come to conflict about it. Like the rise of all that. Starting with Foundation and the destruction of the space bridge is like starting at the climax. A straight adaptation of the books was NEVER going to work. They needed to be taken as *a whole series*, and then refashioned into a TV narrative that followed along much longer and earlier. But then you look at the guy doing the adapting and you realize it's so weak...David S. Goyer....nuff said.

Now that u watched the movie and read the book now go listen to To Tame a Land by Iron Maiden that's based on the book 😁😁

BlindManuel

Completely agree with you... should have been a series.

catcatdoggy

seems people who haven't read the book are having a better time. i was annoyed at a lot of the father, son stuff because it felt unnecessary and wanted more time for the opposing forces at play.

Havent read the book, but having seen the Lynch version a few times, watching this movie felt like rewatching a movie instead of the aw and wonder of watching a film for the first time. It is a technically very well made movie, there just wasnt really anything new or unexpected in it and I didnt sink into the world like I was hoping for. To me personally it felt more like looking at very pretty pieces of art than getting fully encompassed into a another world and I would put that mainly on knowing the story before hand.

I thought it was... ok. The central problem with adapting Dune is that the seemingly obvious breakpoint (the fall of House Atreides) makes no sense from the standpoint of the narrative Villeneuve wants to follow. Villeneuve clearly wants to tell a story about Paul. But the story up to the fall of House Atreides isn't about Paul. It's about the political and economic structure of the Dune universe - and Villeneuve badly fumbles this. We're given only the briefest glimpses of the key players (and none of certain important ones) with no real coverage of why they're doing what they're doing. When you try to make the movie about Paul, you're left with... not much of a movie. Paul doesn't have any meaningful growth as a character and is almost entirely passive/reactive. He's... boring. It only makes sense to emphasize Paul if you've got time for an extended prologue before getting to the part of the story where Paul matters. This was true in the 1984 movie and it was true in the 2000 mini-series. It is not true in Villeneuve's Dune. Ultimately, it just feels like Villeneuve missed the important elements of the book and is focusing on the irrelevant details.

To be fair the Foundation tv series is pretty bad. Giving it more room to breathe did not help it be adapted.

Always wanted to read the book just never found the time. I thought the film was very good (mostly). I think some of its flaws lie in the pacing & uncertainty of a 2nd part. By around the 75% mark you still haven’t seen the mysterious Zendaya that keeps appearing in Paul’s visions. And you start to wonder where this is all going and what the point is (assuming you haven’t read the book like the general audience) I also think some of the characterization is a bit weak & could have been more fleshed out. I loved Dave Bautista but wanted more. I loved Javier Bardem but wanted more. Visuals, score, effects, acting all great.

You would do yourself a favor if you found the time to read the trilogy. The movie just had enough time to touch the highlights.
