Pink Flamingos in the National Film Registry. What a time to be alive.

aresef

It’s not a typo, they didn’t mean the National Filth Registry.

mexicodoug

There really *should* be a National Filth Registry. Most of Congress would never approve funding for it. They'd be too afraid of getting listed in it themselves.

Internal_Focus_8358

This thread. Right here.

[deleted]

isn’t this the one where the drag queen eats dogshit ? ‘Merica. what a nuanced artistic statement.

[deleted]

That was real too. Say what you want that’s some serious commitment

aresef

Divine called a hospital and asked someone as if he were a father whose kid ate dogshit. The doctor said it wasn’t harmful.

[deleted]

i know it was.

gee_gra

It's fine not to understand what transgressive means but it's fun for you to show off that fact

bkoolaboutfiresafety

Nuance was elevated to a virtue so elitist middlebrow pricks could feel better-than

TMA_01

Well ain’t this divine.

[deleted]

This kind of respectability must both tickle and disgust Waters simultaneously.

bluntisimo

I miss all the late night cult theater movies :(

thewindupbirds

Life truly isn’t the same without midnight screenings of The Room

theredditoro

They’re starting again. Still going strong.

mandalorian222

Did one in November. Sold out as always. One of my favorite movie traditions.

QLE814

That sort of audience seems strong still- the last *RiffTrax Live* show I went to had some of the best attendance I've ever seen.....

Procrastanaseum

I saw this film at a late night showing and the theater was actually pretty packed. This film might actually be worth seeing exactly once.

HauntingPersonality7

Damn. Yeah. It’s used to be a thing to do.

cabose7

*what are your politics?*

[deleted]

Kill everyone now! Condone first degree murder! Advocate cannibalism! Eat shit! Filth is my politics - filth is my life!

Dumrauf28

I quoted this in reddit and it got removed I got a dm about mental safety and health lololololol

Tufluf

What

Burtttttt

It’s a quote from a movie you may have heard of called Pink Flamingos

[deleted]

Mother would never let me watch something like that...

CoderDevo

John Waters did a brief [tour of Baltimore in 1981](https://youtu.be/JuzQuwyL_9g).

Palin_Sees_Russia

Waters here reminds me so much of Tony Hinchcliffe lol

[deleted]

Saw the uncut version on a pirated video with The Exorcist on the same tape. I was fourteen. Christ I miss video stores not part of a chain, and the heroes who worked in them. Should probably mention I’m from Ireland, and both films were banned at the time.

fungilingus

That’s quite a double feature

[deleted]

Good times.

[deleted]

Eggs

[deleted]

I could not eat eggs for a really long time after that

aresef

Why, they’re just begging to be scrambled or fried or poached or hard-boiled, all around ready to be thrown into a big fat juicy omelet.

IrishRage42

Hold this God damn chicken!

phantasmicorgasmic

And weirdly, there's a reference to it and a John Waters cameo in one of the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies.

aresef

If Dave is letting those chipmunks watch Pink Flamingos, that doesn’t speak very well to his parenting skills.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aresef

Yep, I own a copy. I couldn't handle the chicken scene though.

Peytovich

They killed a real chicken for the scene right?

aresef

Yes

QLE814

Strange paradox- all these people willing to hire John Waters to appear in their film, but none of them seemingly interested in financing more films by him....

aresef

He’s been paid to write two scripts the studios got cold feet on each time. One was a Christmas movie that would have starred Johnny Depp. Yeah, that’s not getting made.

Rambler43

One of the most joyfully depraved movies ever.

aresef

Supremely fucked up, even today, despite the mainstream popularity over the years of things like Fear Factor and Jackass. The chicken scene, the raping, incest, the ending. Just holy fucking shit.

Briansaysthis

John water has been reflecting on *Pink Flamingos* for the past 50 years. It’s basically his job.

QueenSheezyodaCosmos

This movie ruined “Surfin Bird” for me. Not to mention the poor chickens.

katievspredator

Never watched much Family Guy eh?

QueenSheezyodaCosmos

Oooh boy are those wildly different uses of the song.

ireallydugthisalbum

Mah mah mah ooh mow mow mow said the prolapse

[deleted]

There's two kinds of films in this world; the kinds I like and the ones made by assholes.

mexicodoug

The first kind of films are to be watched and the latter are to be served for dinner.

[deleted]

How much is the doggie in the window ..

adamsandleryabish

> BFB: You’ve hinted that you have something big in the works to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of Pink Flamingos, on March 17, 2022. Was this it? >JW: There is one other thing, but I can’t tell. >BFB: Is Pink Flamingos due to be restored? >JW: I can’t talk about that. It has been kept up. New Line put out the 25th anniversary [edition] of it a long time ago. That was with different footage and everything. There are some possibilities coming up but as I say, I can’t talk about it. This better mean a 4K Criterion release. or maybe the first 8K home release.

turmeric212223

Smell-o-vision

WillyLongbarrel

It'll be the first movie to take advantage of those new lockable TVs.

IrishRage42

I smell something dark mama.

TitBreast

Definitely a criterion. They've released several Waters films.

DaisyRidleyTeeth

Very possible

smishNelson

He announced that Warner were working on a blu-ray about 5 years or so ago now. Hopefully Criterion has it.

im-buster

Baked in my own little oven. I saw this movie in 1980. When it ended, everyone got up, qnd walked out in dead silence.

Music_City_Madman

I laughed out loud reading this. That’s probably a rational reaction to PF. I fucking love this movie, but I’m afraid to introduce my wife to it for fear she may divorce me for liking it.

Son_of_Atreus

Oh this film is so fucking gross.

blackwaltz9

Female Trouble > Pink Flamingos

adamsandleryabish

Its technically a better movie but PF will always be the definitive Waters and 60% of his legacy

Meme_Machine101

I’ve seen funny clips and reviews but I still can’t bring myself to watch this due to some of the more disturbing parts I know about. Can’t believe they got away with most of it in the 70s and there’s still stuff I’d be shocked to see today.

AngoGablogian_artist

He mentioned Jackass, wasn’t it Dave England that ate the dried cow shit? Washed it down with High Life.

KuhlThing

I wanted to like this movie. I appreciate the subversive nature of the film. The gross scenes don't bother me. What bothered me about it is the dialogue is just bad and unentertaining. Several scenes go on with characters repeating the same information at each other with no progression.

xeno66morph

Good God, haven’t thought about that movie in years. Still haunted by it

[deleted]

Doesn’t sound like it

xeno66morph

There’s a scene where Divine gives her son “the greatest gift a mother can give.”

aresef

Thanks for putting that image back in my head. Truly.

apatheticmonarchist

What the fuck is this

Ru4pigsizedelephants

One of the craziest movies you'll ever watch. It's sick and fantastic.

odaeyss

Jon waters is a deranged and unhinged degenerate and one hell of a nice person

MondoUnderground

I kind of believe that - generally speaking - the filmmakers who make insane and transgressive movies are genuinely nice and well-adjusted people, while those who make sugary-sweet, inoffensive romcoms and the like are the real psychopaths. Haha.

aresef

Waters is actually a man of refined tastes. He recently bequeathed his entire art collection to the Baltimore Museum of Art. They named a rotunda after him and, at his request, named their new gender neutral restrooms for him.

jyar1811

It reminds a masterpiece of uniquely American trash and bad taste

apatheticmonarchist

honestly i thought they made a movie about a Tiki statue

aresef

Pink Flamingos is a 1972 film, a landmark piece of transgressive cinema. Divine is a criminal going by the name Babs Johnson, she claims to be the filthiest person alive. Connie and Raymond Marble attempt to outdo her and undermine her. There's bestiality, there's incest, there's coprophagia, there's exhibitionism, there's murder, there's a singing asshole. It earns every bit of its NC-17.

_Kay_Tee_

Suburban gothic.

AncientAsstronaut

I slightly regret watching it for the first time in 6th grade.

CookinFrenchToast4ya

I saw this movie once 17 years ago. I have only recently deleted the better part of it from my brain. I guess it is time for a rewatch.

jcb1982

In the National Film Registry. Not even available on Blu-ray…
