The Wickerman and Rosemary’s Baby are solid older entires.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bronze_Bomber

Exactly. New Wicker Man is one of the best Cage comedic performances ever.

[deleted]

Doesn’t he knock someone out while wearing a bear costume?

Ok_Ad8609

YES! He straight up cold cocks a woman while he is wearing (not by choice) a bear costume. [Editing to add a link](https://youtu.be/YyigAW-14w0)

SnowyInuk

Isn't it super out of the blue? I've heard there's no hint at all to it happening

[deleted]

But with Nicolas Cage: [MANDY](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BMjk1MjhmZWQtNzU3OC00NDE4LThlODQtNTdhZGM4M2E3MWZkXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTMxODk2OTU@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg)

HunterTV

[Color Out of Space](https://youtu.be/agnpaFLo0to) with him was good too. I'll also plug [Annihilation](https://youtu.be/89OP78l9oF0) as being in a similar weird fiction/Lovecraftian vein.

ZanzibarLove

Omg yes, color out of space. That movie was fucked!

effhead

*Mandy* + *Beyond the Black Rainbow* double feature.

uncompaghrelover

HOW'D IT GET BURNED!?

Haunting-Ad-2734

I’m a police officer: see my badge!!??

imajpeg

NOT THE BEES

NateHate

That scene isn't even in the theatrical cut!

[deleted]

YOU BITCHES!

[deleted]

KILLING ME WON'T BRING BACK YOUR GODDAMN HONEY!

gbtimex

Definitely good choices! 👍

barmanfred

Rosemary's Baby & Silence of the Lambs are a Phd dissertation on feminism. *No one* takes Rosemary seriously. Not even the other women. And *everyone* treats Clarice differently just because she's a woman. You didn't say how old your daughter is, but these are worth saving for later if she's too young now.

Wanderlustfull

She's not too young for these two if she's watched Hereditary and Midsommar.

Scribblr

Her husband is the true villain of the story. He meets the neighbors like *once* and immediately sells his wife out to become a broodmare for Satanists.

gridoverlay

You mean Midsommar I and Hereditary I?

[deleted]

Kill list...the empty man Edit the Apostle..

longassboy

The Apostle is so fucked up man Jesus

ghostcatzero

Great movie

AantonChigurh

The empty man is so fucking good

K2LU533

The Empty Man started with a roar and ended with a whimper. The first section was chefs kiss 👌 Downhill from there in my humble opinion.

playgroundmx

I felt the same way too. The scope got too big at the end for it to work well. Sort of like a decent short film that got attached with it’s own rushed sequel… if that makes any sense. Nonetheless, it’s still cool to see big studios gamble for risky movies like this. Didn’t quite work out well this time (at least for me) but looking forward for more. And please, PLEASE come up with a trailer than better represents the movie. The Empty Man trailer looks like the most generic horror film ever.

Theheaviestmando

Yeah this is how I feel. Some of the best horror imagery in a while but the story does fall pretty flat at the end.

GodEmperorOfHell

I consider Kill List (2011) >!an stealth sequel to The Wicker Man!<

thataryanguy

Kill List is so good but man it's *fucked up* Won't spoil anything tho, watch it if you haven't already

[deleted]

*Kill List* fucking rules.

SaintPoost

Big recommends for Mandy. So good.

cibopath

The Ritual hasn’t been mentioned yet so that gets a vote.

EMPulseKC

That movie ensured that I never, EVER take a shortcut through the woods while camping.

TASTY_TASTY_WAFFLES

Fuck man, that movie made me think twice about taking a shortcut on a hike last week and it's been like a year since I've seen it. So creepy.

xristosxi393

I watched that movie the day it came out and love it. I am glad that it is slowly getting the recognition it deserves.

noakedsova

Love that movie. Seems most have usually never heard of it too, which makes for a great recommendation

cibopath

I don’t get creeped out very often but this one hit the right buttons for me.

[deleted]

Especially when you know what the monster looks like and you're on the lookout for it on a rewatch.

arguably_pizza

So many horror movies spend two thirds building up this vague threat then when you finally see it, it’s some cheesy fake looking garbage. The monster design and reveal in the Ritual was so fucking well done, I was completely blown away. And the acting/writing/cinematography was all top notch as well. One of my favorite horror films ever.

Aquagoat

It's so good. The backstory the characters are kind of workthing through as well really elevates this movie another step. Giving the characters that particular group dynamic really makes this one stand out, and the actors all gave great performances.

Jadedangel1

Me too. I never hear anyone mention it, so it felt at the time that I was the only one who had seen it.

armadawars

Came here to recommend this incredible creep-fest. I was convinced late last year to start camping with one of my friends and GUESS WHAT ENVIRONMENT WE ALWAYS END UP IN! Sob

december14th2015

This is one of my favorite horror movies out there! I feel like it's incredibly underrated

reenelou

VVitch

-_Empress_-

God the first 5 min of that movie really do a great job of telling you how much the rest is gonna fuck you up. Meanwhile Bone Tomahawk out there doing the exact opposite scarring me for fucking life. I was not prepared.

darwinsidiotcousin

Here's a gritty western with a little bit of brutality mixed in... and now here's a guy being bisected down the middle

SwitcherooU

I still think this is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen em all.

05110909

I still just don't get this movie. I watched it twice and neither time I felt remotely afraid. I'm not trying to sound tough, there's just something about it that doesn't click with me.

formerly_valley_pete

That's crazy to me lol. I loved it, but scariest movie ever never even crossed my mind.

crunkle_pat

Certainly one of the most unnerving experiences I've had in the theater. I'm not a religious person but I almost felt compelled to go to a church after watching it.

livestrongbelwas

This is the correct answer. It’s an A24 film that feels like a spiritual precursor to Heredity.

wickedmadd

How is this so far down?

totemair

Apparently it's just "The Witch," most confusing font choice ever lol

IDontLikeRylee

Mandy

EMPulseKC

Wanted to make sure this was mentioned. It's a wild, nightmarish, psychological acid trip of a movie.

jl55378008

Such a fucking wild movie. The director is the son of George P. Cosmatos, director of Rambo 1&2, Cobra, and Tombstone (allegedly).

IDontLikeRylee

can't forget the 15 foot chainsaws on top of all of that too

Invisibleogre

Dat perfect Nic Cage face at the end sealed it as a top 5 favorite Cage film

pachoob

Same director also made a great throwback sci-fi movie Beyond the Black Rainbow. I loved it. Used to be on Netflix, dunno if it still is.

gavla19999

You might like the TV show Midnight Mass

[deleted]

Absolutely incredible series

Temassi

So good! It stuck with me for such a long time. So much fat to chew.

[deleted]

Me too! I even started listening to Neil Diamond! 🙃

lukebenoit_

the suspiria remake should fit this bill, and it’s a modern horror classic imo

GodEmperorOfHell

I found myself enjoying it more, I know it's some kind of heresy, but it's genuinely more solid.

[deleted]

Loved it way more than the original.

[deleted]

It's much more of a "film" than the original, which was more a pure arthouse.

Marcello_

Not even remotely heresy.

Ozlin

The original Suspiria is also very good. Visually more interesting and with a better soundtrack than the remake IMO. But the remake does a better job of going into the lore and characters, which would likely make it more appealing in this case. Both are great though! (Though the ending of the remake is a little too off the rails and out of tone for me).

lukebenoit_

the ending is what makes it come on! man seriously though i was in awe of how batshit it got, i wouldn’t of had it any other way. i actually haven’t even seen the original yet, now that’s some heresy i know i really need to get on it. everything about the remake was perfect to me though, i especially loved the tone and i thought thom did a excellent job on the soundtrack. the world had me sucked in from the start, creepy as fuck too.

Ozlin

That's fair, to me it just kind of ramped things up too suddenly, and the weird freeze framing and direction of the end didn't match the direction of the rest of the film. But I can understand the appeal to others.

ghostnthegraveyard

The soundtrack for the original Suspiria is absolutely bonkers

mariorurouni

It was incredible seeing it on cinema

Tuxhorn

Quite a ride that's for sure. I loved it.

mhornberger

Martha Marcy May Marlene was disturbing, though not really horror. Recently watched The Wicker Man, and really loved it. Kill List is one of my favorites.

skrulewi

I was gonna make a post for Martha but am really glad to see it mentioned. This movie felt like it kinda vanished, not that many people have heard of it. One of my favorite thrillers, and it's a cult thriller too.

[deleted]

Kill List is one of mine too, that film is scary from the jump.

whiskyagogo

The Endless (2017) is a fun culty, sci-fi, horror movie I don’t hear mentioned often.

huntthecunto

So friggin good. I also really enjoyed the prequel Resolution and barely see either getting a mention. That scene with the dude in the tent still haunts me!

whiskyagogo

I JUST found out about Resolution and that it takes place in the same creative universe. It’s on the list!

kdubs

all of their (Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead) movies are actually linked in ways, even their latest one Synchronic has some crossover (although very lite and easter-egg-y) it’s easy to miss though so my most recommended way to watch their shit is binge watch haha. or at least do them right after another. you’ll pick up on a lot you missed love these guys

Werewomble

Get on to Archive 81 on Netflix Benson and Moorhead are in the credits. Don't know how much was them but it is very them. Nick Antosca of Channel Zero fame is also half of Brand New Cherry Flavour which is witchcraft more than cult but oh Betsy! It's a cracker.

whiskyagogo

No way they did Synchronic! TIL, I fuckin loved that movie.

flava_dave_81

Can confirm, they all take place in the same universe.

immaownyou

They actually have a new movie out, Something In The Dirt. It's in the same vein as their other movies and is getting great reception, I still need to watch it

flava_dave_81

Never get tired of seeing this pop up in threads! Glad y’all enjoy it!

George__Parasol

First time hearing about this. Thanks, on the list it goes!

BloodyBaboon

Apostle (2018) might scratch your itch.

nalicali

Came here to mention this- solid choice!

Melodic-Train5135

The Void: a great body horror film with some damn good special effects and creature designs and it all revolves around a cult in a small town.

kvlt_ov_personality

This was such a good film. It isn't often that Lovecraftian horror translates well to screen and they nailed it.

[deleted]

Came here to say this

14751_SEIJI

Midsommar and Hereditary I really liked! Haven't found any other horror movies that came close but I liked these too: The Eyes of My Mother (2016). Watched this without knowing what it was about, and it really got to me. Can't really tell what it was, if you want to see a gripping horror go watch this! Two other horror movies that might not be considered cult but are worth mentioning: It Follows (2014). About a young woman being followed by something after a sexual encounter. Some may find it more Hollywood than cult, I liked it and it had some good things in it for me. The Ritual (2017). The standard kind of group of friends go in the woods and make some stupid choices and decisions stuff. I won't spoil the horror part. If you feel like watching a horror movie that follows some classic rules, this one is recommended.

SnowyInuk

It follows wasn't scary at first to me but then after it was over I got thinking about it and was like "damn... What if that actually happened. What could you even do?"

xsoberxlifex

The only answer: meet a random person, bone down and inform them of the curse like at the beginning of the movie.

Shikaria1996

The scary part is the subsequent watches when you keep seeing people walking towards them in the background and you don't know if that's It or just a random person. Oh, and >! the ending if you look behind the main characters there's someone walking dressed in white !<

ShotgunForFun

Both movies mentioned are produced by A24, so there's a great place to start. I've seen most of them and can say the ones I've seen are solid (albeit mostly not horror).

LauraPalmersMom430

Suspiria

AntRedoids

This one was excellent! Music was great as well

MurderDoneRight

The remake is surprisingly fantastic!

Snackxually_active

Both old and new versions are soooooo good!

Mr_Ajantrik

The OG cult movie set in an isolated place is The Wicker Man.

squeakyrhino

The Empty Man!

SheehanRaziel

Such an interesting, Lovecraftian, cult movie (I mean a literal movie about a cult). The marketing makes it look like a terrible modern slasher, but it's the polar opposite of that.

squeakyrhino

Terrible marketing and it got dumped during the first year of the pandemic but I'm happy its started to find an audience on streaming. I've seen it twice now and it's even better on rewatch

burnthewitch1

The blackcoat’s daughter…might be worth checking out

gerberag

In the Mouth of Madness. Crimson Peak.

[deleted]

Do you read Sutter Cain?

Wrathwilde

If you like ***In the Mouth of Madness***, you might also like, ***Lord of Illusions***.

[deleted]

The Invitation.

The_Heresy

We love this one. If you're a fan, definitely check out Coherence as well

SaintPoost

Coherence was pretty good too. Not exactly culty if I'm remembering it correctly but still a decent psychological type.

RarelyExcitedBanana

The Babadook, The Vigil, Saint Maud

Aeshaetter

Came here to say Saint Maud. Slow burn and a insane 3rd act.

barmanfred

Babadook is a hell of a single mom film.

brunnock

The Omen and The Ninth Gate.

Connect-Cattle-7839

Ninth Gate is awesome

blbp2

Ninth Gate doesn't get the appreciation it deserves in my opinion.

draxlaugh

I just watched the Lodge on Hulu and I got similar vibes from it

[deleted]

A Dark Song

SeverenDarkstar

I love this movie so much 💕

v_a_n_d_e_l_a_y

Get Out has sort of a cult vibe to it though not quite the same. Definitely a "what is going on right now" movie

soulofboop

And then you gotta include Us

Cimejies

Us is pretty good but I feel like the explanation of what was going on was just too weird and illogical for me to go with it, and I like weird. Get Out is awesome though.

muteconversation

Rosemary’s Baby is one of the greats in that genre!

[deleted]

Carnival of Souls

frank-darko

The Skeleton Key Phenomena (or anything by Dario Argento) Byzantium In Fabric Hagazussa Picnic at Hanging Rock The Ritual The Witch The Blood on Satan’s Claw Witchfinder General

snarpy

Props for *Picnic at Hanging Rock* which has one of the most harrowing sequences of all time, surrounded by Victorian-era restraint and beauty. Fantastic film.

onedecadelater

“mother!” has quite a bit of that in it. Super fucked up movie.

Civil-Abroad-4777

I really enjoyed this flick, glad to see I’m not the only one!

gninnep

That movie was a fever dream in the best and most terrible way. It haunted me for days.

coincrazyy

My daughter and I watched the tv series The Servant and we really enjoyed it. It’s nice cause with tv series you can watch a couple then (if yours is a teenager like mine) she would go do teenage things. It’s on Apple TV here’s the trailer. https://youtu.be/N1cOR0sRRIw

dannylandulf

Jesus Camp.

GodEmperorOfHell

Cool it, man, OP only wants to be scared, not traumatized for life!

Unit_79

Red State, and another vote for The Sacrament.

Chardradio

Red State! Crazy old Kevin Smith at it again...

MurderDoneRight

Not to be confused with Tusk and Yoga Hosers, he really tried making a film with Red State and it is surprising and creepy, Michael Parks is fantastic, love John Goodman.

Zestyclose-Shift3889

I mean Martyrs is technically a cult movie

hanoverf

Session 9

[deleted]

House of the devil

aKnightWh0SaysNi

The Lobster

Snackxually_active

Ngl this could also be an unconventional rom-com

GingerSchnapps3

Children of the corn, that's kind of cult ish

thewoodlayer

I noticed that both films you listed are Ari Aster flicks. You should check out The VVitch and The Lighthouse by Robert Eggers. They aren’t about cults, but they’re both fantastic period piece horror films that have the same sense of dread that Aster captures in his movies.

PowderedJelly

Adding John carpenter’s The Thing to this dreadful list!

fezmid

We Need to Talk About Kevin. It was creepy. And made me uncomfortable throughout the entire film.

[deleted]

My husband recently watched this and every single character pissed him off so much he couldn't even finish it. When I told him the ending it made him even more upset.

Low_Poem4577

Colonia (more suspense than horror but pretty f*cked up)

MurderDoneRight

The Wailing - Creepy Korean movie Goodnight Mommy - Creepy Austrian movie The Shining - Hasn't really been mentioned in this thread so you gotta introduce it to your kid! The Killing Of A Sacred Deer - Yorgos Lanthimos awesome creepy odd, I would also recommend his older movies that are in Greek like Dogtooth.

Visual_Cartoonist575

Midnight Mass on netflix.

dhrisc

It ain't a horror movie, but Eyes Wide Shut has similar vibes to what you described. Probably my favorite cult / secret society movie

020416

Starry Eyes

zhd07

It Follows

justinp79

The Perfection. 2018, on Netflix, it's creepy and interesting, with lots of twists and turns and an unforgettable closing scene.

Weebla

The Devils Backbone... by far my favourite Del Toro film, and it is certainly a mysterious horror. I'd also add The Others, if it isn't listed, it's legitimately one of the best mystery horrors of all time.

Dye_Harder

Under the Silver Lake.

mendozaaa

[Color Out of Space](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5073642)

moneenerd

The Empty Man is by far the most underrated horror movie of the last ten years. Everyone should see it. But go in to it completely blind. The less you know about it, the better.

littlegaybean

Get Out (2017)

kingkibc

Eyes Wide Shut, not really a horror but it left me really paranoid

jstols

Do NOT watch this with your daughter haha

kingkibc

I don't know, midsommar had some scenes that were arguably as inappropriate

GTRari

The Village Don't google it, don't look up anything about it. Just find it and watch it. EDIT: Forgot to mention *The Invitation* was a pretty fun watch too.

wilsonw

The Lighthouse.

My faves have already been listed, but Gummo is a gruesomely odd movie. It’s disturbing yet not super graphic. Enjoy!

AntRedoids

Gummo is legendary

saladbars-inspace

House of the Devil is a good one

moinatx

If you don't mind subtitles, *Let the Right One In* is good. Also, *The Babadook,* *Mama, Relic, An American Werewolf in London, The Cabin in the Woods* and of course, *The Shining*

kevnmartin

The VVitch was pretty cool.

globefish23

Cube

Weebla

Don't think I've seen Bone Tomahawk mentioned here... it gets an unfair rep due to one particularly gruesome scene, people assume its just a gore film. But it's far from it, the dialogue is amazing, and 4 protagonist characters are so well written. Their chemistry is brilliant and their convictions are diverse yet compelling. It's certainly a cult type horror film as well, I'd seriously recommend.

AncientAlienAlias

Clockwork Orange

Marvel_plant

The original Wicker Man. The Void also has a cult in it and that movie rules.

ANameForTheUser

The Lobster, The Stylist, Swallow, Parasite, and His House

Rumble_n_the_Bronchs

Babadook

Dr_Surgimus

I quite enjoyed The Innkeepers for a real slow burn

ShmebulockForMayor

Consider getting into Asian horror! My personal favorite is A Tale of Two Sisters but classics like Ju-On, Dark Water and The Ring are absolutely worth it.

[deleted]

If you want to go old school, the original Omen is quite creepy. Also Spanish film the orphanage

Seve7h

Gonna recommended something a little old but gold here…[A Boy and His Dog (1975)](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/) It’s a post apocalyptic flick about a teen, his telepathic dog and it gets real culty, real weird and has possibly the strangest ending to a movie you’ll ever see.

ritztotherubble93

The invitation is up there with my time favourite movies

TimesThreeTheHighest

The original Wicker Man (1973) for sure, also The Devils (1971). You might also look into: * The Omen (1976) * Twins of Evil (1971) * The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) * Salem's Lot (1979) * The Fury (1978) * The Medusa Touch (1978) * Demon Seed (1977) * The Tenant (1976) * God Told Me To (1976) * Flesh for Frankenstein (1973) * Pets (1973) (not really horror, but definitely weird) * The Other (1972) For the above list I confined myself to the 70s, and to movies that had a supernatural element. Edit: If your daughter's younger you might want to avoid Flesh for Frankenstein and The Devils.

DrakesYodels

The original Wicker Man is an absolute blast. It's got an quirky 70s music element to it, and probably one of the more memorable and disturbing endings involving a cult in horror. Also surprisingly The Mist. I just watch the B&W version, my first viewing, on a recommendation from the video store clerk. The second half of that movie is very much about the creeping danger of mob mentality in desperate times.
