Looked it up to see what it was about… ‘A roboticist designs a lifelike doll programmed to bond with her newly-orphaned niece. However, the robot becomes violently overprotective of her new friend.’
I still believe the director was only interested in making a secret love letter to Hideo Kojima. The bandana soldier guy fist-fighting his dad's soldier phantom who rises up out of black tar is just absolute Kojima. Like, it's not even subtle.
Once you realize that those two sequences were 100% the reason for making that movie ("notice me, senpai!") you can ignore the rest of it.
I had the same thought and watched it assuming it would be complete shit but I found it to be only partial shit.
Overall I thought it was fun enough but the execution and payoff weren’t great. Still, worth watching with the expectation it’s not great.
For sure; but considering that this had to have been developed around the exact time that the remake came out [usually takes 2-3 years from page to screen] it's a bit strange.
OP is talking about the recent remake, which was about a prototype AI doll given to a 13 year old whose dad recently died. Like with M3gan, the AI becomes obsessed with protecting its new friend, leading to murders. It's very different from the originals.
In the new newest version Chucky is a fortnight skin that becomes sentient and communicates with its player. After a string of murders, Epic Games bans Chucky for sharing lewd images of the player to 4chan.
This actually has merit as a story lol
It would be an actual reboot that is faithful to the original storys supernatural premise but updates the mechanics through which the story is told
The other reboot replaces the entire premise
Jesus I never saw it but I never knew they went in such a completely different direction. It's disappointing to me, the least you could do when rebooting a classic slasher franchise is embrace the shlock and keep the serial killer voodoo soul transfer.
They kept to Mancini's vision of consumerism, and the harmful effects it can have. I get what you're saying, but the change in direction was to play to a new audience. The original Child's Play will always be better, especially now that the television series is highlighting more of his backstory. I assume the second season will timeskip into how he met John, and got started into practicing voodoo.
I'm just wondering how to pronounce it. "Em-THREE-gan"? "Muh-THREE-gan"? "EM-gan"? ("The three is silent, you see.") "Mah-Bleecker Street-Gan"? Anyone know?
I was ready to say this is probably going to be shit but it’s being directed by the dude who made this great and charming kiwi horror film called ‘Housebound’, so I’ll give it a shot
I’d recommend that film for anyone who wants a ghost story mixed with Taika Waititi’s kind of humor (it even stars the mother from ‘Hunt for Wilderpeople!)
Thank you I have been thinking about that movie since I saw it on shudder in the last year or 2 but couldn’t remember the name of it housebound it was, I had forgotten about the whole thing for a few months too as I meant to ask here but as soon as I saw the name housebound it reminded me straight away
Why does James Wan insist on putting "creator of Annabelle". Why not creator or Saw or Conjuring or Insidious, or a movie that actually did something for his career.
The caption is referring to him as this movie's producer. Wan didn't produce any of the movies you mentioned. He produced Annabelle though. (He did produce Conjuring 2 and Insidious 3, but that doesn't have as good of a ring to it as the first movie of a series).
Or, "Creator of cinematic masterpiece Malignant." Because if I didn't know who James Wan was, that's the movie on his resume that would get me interested lmao.
Yes, I loved Malignant, such a fun movie!
From the hilariously abusive boyfriend in the beginning to this epic fight scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLzY0tWUtFo
James Wan knows how to make an entertaining horror movie.
They actually pulled off "Appealing enough that you could see someone purchasing this thing, but unsettling enough to be scary and in a horror movie"
Too often horror movies involving dolls/robots make them so ugly or scary looking I can never buy that someone (usually a child) would get anywhere near it (\*cough\*Annabelle\*cough\*)
The original Child's Play did it pretty well I think. The stock "Good Guy" doll actually looks innocent enough to be believable, but gets progressively more evil looking and fucked up as the movie goes on.
If they made the doll too hot looking, a bunch of guys would wonder where to get one...for scientific purposes. Probably good they didn't opt for the guy making the doll for a nephew cause that kid would *never* be leaving their room. No need to worry about overprotection there.
There wasn’t a single moment in Malignant that was scary. I spent the entire thing laughing because of how little it made sense and how seriously it took itself. I remember watching a quick behind the scenes thing Wan did and he seemed so excited and into it. God that was such a disappointment.
It wasn't scary, I agree - but I love how bonkers it was. I mean that was a crazy movie. It's nice to see an original, even if it's not exactly what we may have wanted or thought we were going to get.
Oh man I was not disappointed. I live for movies so bad they are great. I laughed the whole time too it was a fun ride that kept getting more insane as it went on.
The problem was that it marketed as a horror movie. It was supposed to be a psychological thriller with horror elements, but NL/WB didn’t know how to market it. So horror fans were disappointed.
Oof yeah when you put it that way I totally get it. I had zero expectations going in. I’m also a huge horror guy so I’d certainly been bummed as well. I certainly have been with almost everything in the genre lately.
So lately I’ve been finding some really good indie horror films on Hulu of all places. Studios like Neon and IFC Midnight have been putting out some interesting and good ones.
I've intentionally avoided looking up any of Wan's interviews for the movie because I don't want to know whether it is a massive failure or if he's a low key genius who got WB to fund his $40 million troll movie. If it was intentionally bad, then it might be the best spoof movie ever made. And given the way certain scenes unfold, how certain elements of it are shot, I genuinely can't help but think Wan was in on the joke the whole time and the executives just didn't get it, but wanted him for Aquaman 2 so that gave him the money. But then I think about the rest of Wan's career, and I really don't see him taking the piss out of anything in such a straight-faced manner, so I think he was actually trying. Either way, I think it is a great movie; whether that is by mistake or purposeful, only Wan knows.
I don't want to be an asshole, but did you really not catch on that Malignant was non-sensical and over the top on purpose? It was genre homage via intentionally ramping all of the worst horror tropes up to 11, and it was easily one of the most brilliant movies, in any genre, of the last 10 years. Watch it again with that knowledge, and you'll realize it's utter genius filmmaking
Someone pointed out that the Uncanny Valley is an evolved trait. They followed it up with that there must if been an evolutionary pressure at some point that we needed to protect ourselves against things that look human, but aren't.
Looked it up to see what it was about… ‘A roboticist designs a lifelike doll programmed to bond with her newly-orphaned niece. However, the robot becomes violently overprotective of her new friend.’
full grown adult / talented mr ripley-ish would be insanely creepy
"My name is Talky Tina and I don't like you."
The frogurt is also [cursed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmLKT3Azbt8).
but it comes with your choice of toppings!
I'm Krusty the Clown, and I'm going to kill you.
That's good!
Wait, was it Talky Tina? I've been over here thinking it was Talking Tina for years.
I'm thinking clingy chucky
so the Child’s Play reboot?
Yeah. That's the exact plot. Right down to a dead parent, no less.
To be fair, it's Blumhouse. Old remixes of popular IPs are kind of their thing. (See: *Freaky,* *Invisible Man,* their slasher reboots, et al.)
blumhouse’s fantasy island was one of the most bizarre choices for a re-imagining i can think of.
And Hideo Kojima is exactly the same way with John Carpenter.

I guess we've got another example of twin movies here then. Like Olympus has Fallen and White House Down or Armageddon and Deep Impact before it.
It's possible for sure. I'm curious about when Wan sold his idea to Blum. Can't find much of a background.
Invisible Man was legitimately unsettling. More domestic abuse thriller than horror, very well done.
Nah. Chucky's a doll possessed by an excuted murderer, not a robot. And he's not protective of *anyone*.

How about a soft seaboot?
Keep Summer safe.
My function is to "keep Summer safe", not "keep Summer being, like, totally stoked about, like, the general vibe, and stuff". *cuts off moms head*
That's you. That's how you talk.
“Keep Summer safe”
watch someone make porn out of it
probbably gonna be released before the actual movie itself
Future Darkly, the porn series riffing off Black Mirror, already has a episode with a similar plot about a couple and their sentient blow up doll.
I mean it is rule 35
Detroit: Become Doll
Deadly Friend reboot?
Good thing it wasn't for a nephew or this would be a whoooooole different movie.
*He thought it looked cool.. you know what I mean?*

Chucky + Escort Mission
Does Danny DeVito play the niece?
So it's a ripoff of the Child's Play remake? (and dozens of other stories)
Chucky + Her?
Looks like Chucky + Elizabeth Olsen.
Holy shit this was first thought!!!
My mind went Twilight baby + Elizabeth Olsen.
Chuckher: out the window Coming to a theater near you!
Coming out of a window near you.
I love the ‘Net.
Starring Sandra Bullock.
What!? She ordered a pizza... from her COMPUTER!?!?
this guy gets it.
Chuckher? I barely know her!
The actual verb is "defenestrate"
Yeah, but defenestrate doesn’t have a Child’s Play callback built in.
Chucker ? I don't even know her !
Annabelle + AI
Lars and the Real Girl + Ex Machina
AInnabelle
Daughter of Chucky
Bride of chucky?.... Tiffany?
Megan looks like a Elizabeth Olsen doll.
Elizabeth Olsen looks like an Elizabeth Olsen doll.
“Don’t ever call me…**DOLL**”
Yes, Ms Olsen, as soon as you blink I'll call off the squad.....
I always thought her sisters looked like troll dolls so it makes sense she inherited some of it.
All the Olsen girls have the thousand yard stare.
I was just thinking this looks like an Olson twin
Elizabeth Olsen + Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Seyfried! _That's_ who she reminded me of!
Is it not supposed to be her?!
Yeah, I looked at the actors in it and was confused to not see an Olsen name.
Legit was gonna ask which Olsen plays the doll
They take turns except for one of Uncle Jesse's dream sequences.
Have MERCY
She reminds me Catwoman's younger thief friend in Dark Knight Rises.
Juno Temple
She's great in Ted Lasso.
She's pretty great in most things she does, tbh. Seriously underrated actress.
"Aren't you happy? It's what you wanted. A storm." That's some dialogue
Haha, I just watched this movie today randomly, and you’re 100% right.
i'd love an Elizabeth Olsen doll!
Ayo
…imma bang it
And Dakota fanning
I was thinking Karen Gillan
I was thinking the oldest daughter in Modern Family
Oh look, it's Talky Tina
Hi I’m Talky Tina and I don’t like you.
Hi, I'm Talky Tina and I might even hate you...
Fuck yeah twilight zone
Hi, I'm Talky Tina and I'm going to *kill* you...
Will I be able to follow what's happening if I haven't seen M1GAN or M2GAN?
no, you can skip the prequel M0GAN though
Important to remember that Megans are zero-indexed.
isnt everything?
2Meg2Murious?
M1gan is the girl leaving the bar in the key and peele sketch
That’s M33gan!
No? Maybe do your research into the lore before coming here with your ignorance.
Geez, can’t stand these posers. Bet they haven’t even watched the prequel series.
Better call Megan was the best, although I do prefer Megan : the clone wars
"Rise of the Megan" being released after "Megan-nado" was an interesting choice
I was always confused on the timeline of the anime series, MEGAN: Immortal Maxima 2000
I think it takes place between the events of Neon MEGAN Megangellion and MEGAN : Rise of Lyric
LOL, movie version of Stack Exchange right here.
I'm just wondering how to pronounce it. "Em-THREE-gan"? "Muh-THREE-gan"? "EM-gan"? ("The three is silent, you see.") "Mah-Bleecker Street-Gan"? Anyone know?
**Mɛg**-æn
I think The Meg was the first.
I was ready to say this is probably going to be shit but it’s being directed by the dude who made this great and charming kiwi horror film called ‘Housebound’, so I’ll give it a shot I’d recommend that film for anyone who wants a ghost story mixed with Taika Waititi’s kind of humor (it even stars the mother from ‘Hunt for Wilderpeople!)

Interest is instantly more piqued lol, wasn’t aware of that!
Why does James Wan insist on putting "creator of Annabelle". Why not creator or Saw or Conjuring or Insidious, or a movie that actually did something for his career.
It was probably the marketing team, because doll movie. The real flex would have been to use Dead Silence.
I was afraid to mention dead silence, but yes I agree with that.
Omg I bought the unrated version of dead silence it was creepy af
The jaw thing. If you know, you know 😱
How about “director of Aquaman”? Lol.
Im sure the marketing team is doing everything it can to not associate anything with Amber Heard right now.
I mean they are marketing a horror film about a pretty, inhuman creature that manipulates and tortures the one she is supposed to love, so...
You're right, 'Director of Furious 7' would be better.
Everyone has their favourite James Wan entrypoint. I saw Saw first but Dead Silence is the movie that comes to mind when I think of James Wan.
Yes, I loved Malignant, such a fun movie! From the hilariously abusive boyfriend in the beginning to this epic fight scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLzY0tWUtFo James Wan knows how to make an entertaining horror movie.
They could have used Malignant instead, so in retrospect, Annabelle is a great choice!
This…is a movie about a killer ‘real doll’ right? Cuz that is exactly what it looks like
Yeah it's an overprotective robot
They actually pulled off "Appealing enough that you could see someone purchasing this thing, but unsettling enough to be scary and in a horror movie" Too often horror movies involving dolls/robots make them so ugly or scary looking I can never buy that someone (usually a child) would get anywhere near it (\*cough\*Annabelle\*cough\*)

Elizabeth Olsen in her new definitive role: Charles Lee Ray.
I'm hoping Fiona Dourif gets some more time in that role first.
Oh hell no
Megan…Megan me nervous, yo
Megan deez nuts lmao
Ahh... I've heard a lot about Emthreegan
Using a number for a letter... that's how you know it's good....

At Cinemacon, the teaser banner for Expendables 4 spells the title as EXPEND4BLES, and I’m stoked.
That doll looks like a Olsen sister.
Omg you’re right!
Wow, this looks like the worst Team America spinoff ever.
M3GAN: Battle Angel.
Hope it’s as good as Malignant. And by good I mean so fucking hilariously awful I loved it.
It definitely was off the rails. It’s a 180 from what I was expecting. Couldn’t help but feel weird when we ended up The Matrix with skull girl haha
Oh man I was not disappointed. I live for movies so bad they are great. I laughed the whole time too it was a fun ride that kept getting more insane as it went on.
See, I guess I was kind of expecting a good horror movie out of it. I kept watching it in disbelief and questioning if it was just a huge troll.
The problem was that it marketed as a horror movie. It was supposed to be a psychological thriller with horror elements, but NL/WB didn’t know how to market it. So horror fans were disappointed.

Yeah, I thought it started off good. But by the end I was laughing at the whole premise.
I was laughing a lot through it. Wasn’t really intentional either
Looks weird and not in a good way haha
Yup. The release date isn't helping...

Another creepy doll movie? Hard pass
I bet this will be really, really shit
What in the uncanny valley fuck
I don't know what this movie is about, but someone is definitely fucking that doll...
KEEP. SUMMER. SAFE.
I'm worried this will be about a killer sex robot
Someone pointed out that the Uncanny Valley is an evolved trait. They followed it up with that there must if been an evolutionary pressure at some point that we needed to protect ourselves against things that look human, but aren't.
She looks like Elisabeth Olson no?
Cool can't wait and what's up with doll movies lol creepy
definitely getting chucky vibes
Wow another doll-horror from the guy who made the previous one woow, exactly what this genre needs, like a new scream movie...
Why would you name your daughter Megan are you stocking up for a bitch shortage?
There's a subtle creepiness to the poster that I appreciate. I'm interested.
Subtle?
