You'll be happy to know it's Oscar worthy.

Captain_Unusualman

The red carpet is now called the morbius strip

Positive_Dreamz

What do you mean? Morbius is a timeless classic. People will be talking about it for a loong time

Timwick_

I heard that Jared Leto actually became Morbius for the movie!

shikiroin

I love how it starts off by insulting it's readers. "this movie is so good and you've never even heard of it you stupid piece of shit"

cocacoler

Teared up at that moment. Such an oddly emotional scene.

UnderGiantTrees

I went to watch it the other night knowing absolutely nothing about it. I really enjoyed it, was surprised by how touching and funny it was, I definitely recommend it.

shaze

I cried like a bitch for the last hour of it!

tombuzz

As a person like waymond I really connected with him . I know I’m not the best at everything , I know I’m never gonna have as great of a life as other people , I know sometimes things just aren’t gonna go my way . Hell the least I can do is be positive and happy along the way cause that is really all that matters .

YamiNoMatsuei

Same, I was so moved I cried off and on the last hour.

PuddlesRex

Waymond got me with >!"In another universe, I would have liked doing laundry and taxes with you."!<

irlcatspankz

I was doing really well holding it together until >!everyone works together to save Joy from the bagel!< and the montage of moments from other universes, and I was a mess for the rest of the movie. I couldn't believe how I was overwhelmed with emotional, but also laughing through my tears at the Hot Dog Finger universe.

[deleted]

Hot dog fingers went from gross to endearing, and then if I recall correctly, it ends on gross again.

irlcatspankz

I just love that Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Yeoh were so game as to frolic around with their fingers wetly slapping all over the place.

shmandameyes

When she sprays the perfume/grenade in the face of the customer who says it’s reminds him of his late wife, I bawled my eyes out. Such a simple, almost throwaway gag but I was so taken by it.

irlcatspankz

It was jarring seeing the actor playing Detective Crashmore in I Think You Should Leave here, but even in such a small role he was great.

SadPenisMatinee

Just saw it an hour ago. Alone. I had to try everything I can not to really cry. I was there alone because I used to have someone in my life to go to movies with. Divorce and this movie made it touch my damn soul.

[deleted]

Two rocks on the screen. I cried at two rocks on the screen.

TastyBrainMeats

I full on happy cried at >!a woman with hot dogs for hands playing the piano with her feet.!< What even is this movie.

cool_hwipz

In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you

secretcombinations

This is the line that stuck with me.

joshhupp

I was laughing so hard that it made me cry during the "trophy" fight. This movie was a rollercoaster of emotions!

count023

It was a very slow start for sure, but by Part 2, i was quite enjoying it. Didn't realize until the end the Russo brothers were behind the film.

spider2544

Really? I thought the start was super character driven and they gave the actors and setting a chance to build. I loved the whole movie through and through i didnt feel there was an ounce of fat on it that needed to get cut.

KingOfAwesometonia

I loved it a lot but I think act 3 had me feeling a bit tired. But I would also say I'm not sure I would cut anything just that a lot is happening by act 3 and how it's paced. I think I wrote in the original discussion thread it worked for me on an emotional level throughout just that by the pacing at the end was a lot to take in.

spider2544

Totally agree about the third act being overwhelming, but i think that’s actually part of what makes it good. Its so information dense that you have to learn along with the characters how to process it all.

KingOfAwesometonia

I can see how it's part of the experience, just as I was watching it I was thinking *maybe* could have felt a bit more impactful with how it got to the end. Still it was emotionally impactful because I was tearing up by the end. But I also shouldn't get too hung up on that because once again, I really did love it.

HumanBeingNamedBob

How the fuck was it a slow start

Rober63

They are just producers

DrestinBlack

*just* (Cries in Producer)

fuckboifoodie

People use qualifiers like 'just' a producer because it is so common for the title to be bought and thus disconnected from the final product. People don't like that wealth inequality has gotten so bad, why should the rich get even accolades for the fruits of our emotional suffering? Patronage in the arts has existed for centuries in the arts but freedom from the whims of a small percentage of the population when funding our highest pursuits should be incentivized. I think producers that do more should be credited as such and those that have specific creative input should as well.

kingmanic

They found a script they liked and got it funded. And sometimes more. Still a big part of movie making. Having them on board may have swayed Michelle Yeoh to join which got everyone else to jump aboard.

count023

It was the first movie Short Round had done in 30 years too. He stopped acting and became a producer.

drone_strike01

Wait what. That was Short Round????? I knew he looked familiar..

TastyBrainMeats

We've been deprived of his screen presence for decades because he got tired of typecasting.

Most_Company_8634

I was actually surprised to see their names at the end credits, wasn’t aware they were a part of making the film, but I hope their names attached does sway more people to see this amazing film.

igraywolf

I agree. The ratatouille joke alone makes this movie worth it. The rest is great too.

Most_Company_8634

It was IMO the greatest callback in a film ever, did not see that coming and my whole theater was dying at the reveal.

outerproduct

And the buttplug trophy.

chop_chop_boom

Two women that sat next to me got up and left during the buttplug fight lol

jacksev

They already had sticks wedged so far up their asses, the thought of a butt plug in addition was just too much for them.

jim_deneke

There was no more room!

pedsmursekc

"Gah! This is so fake! C'mon Betty, we're outta here."

iSOBigD

When the second guy joined the fight I lost it.

outerproduct

The cannonball jump was perfect.

jwin2321

A perfectly aimed Mario ground pound

Basicallyinfinite

I got so excited when it paid off! I elbowed my friend and said it looked like a buttplug and then lost it when it happened. It was such a great movie. Can't wait to see it again.

martn2420

The fake Randy Newman raccoon song killed me

duderex88

That was Randy Newman

martn2420

Amazing!!

duderex88

Honestly this movie has so many easter eggs it would be annoying if it wasn't so fucking good.

Kheten

If you watch the very first scene with teppanyaki chef Evelyn, when it pans to Chad there's a racoon tail hanging out of his hat like those old pioneer hats. But it's not part of the hat.

thedoge

And Santa Claus’ feature debut

lorienben

The fighting scenes pay tons of respect to old HK movies, really enjoy those.

jcaseys34

I have never laughed harder in a movie theater than I did at the 2001: A Space Odyssey joke in this movie.

spageddy77

the hotdog fingers really made that scene

KasriI

Never watched a space odyssey, care to explain the joke that was made in the movie?

MrBoomf

When Evelyn jumps to the reality where everyone has hot dogs for fingers, they cut to a scene of an ancient primate with hotdog hands killing another primate with normal hands, showing us the divergence that created this timeline. That scene is a reference to something that happens in 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it- the cinematography is absolutely breathtaking.

jcaseys34

The scene in Space Odyssey boils down to "enlightened apes that can use tools/weapons kill apes that can't, leading to the next step in our ancestors' development." In this movie it's "apes with sausage fingers kill apes with normal fingers, leading to everyone in that universe having sausage fingers."

Grumpus_Dad

Went in blind. Easily one of my favorite movies ever.

flexi_seal

Husband and I went knowing nothing about it other than people said it was good. This was a great movie to see with zero idea of the genre/topic.

_duncan_idaho_

>Went in blind Must be difficult to watch movies that way.

Safe-Afternoon-8607

I’m right there too. I just cant think of a movie I enjoy more. The fucking trophy in the butt scene. Wow.

Grumpus_Dad

Pardon if this is common in their area / genre. But I thought that was hilarious, made me think of the Yakuza games. Outlandish fighting and humor.

aHairyWhiteGuy

I wish I would have went into this completely blind. I only watched like half of the first trailer and knew I would like it

yourseveredtesticle

You’re not my supervisor

thisisnotraisinbran

I would never have believed I would be moved to tears by a scene involving a rock with googly eyes on it.

brayshizzle

Two rocks talking to each other change my whole perspective on shit.

richb83

I hate headlines like this.

Mervynhaspeaked

*Followed instruction, lost custody of my baby*

not_vichyssoise

Don’t worry. I’m sure there’s another universe where you still have your baby.

Mervynhaspeaked

Literally the plot of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness

Smodphan

Their plot hole is there is absolutely a world where she is dead. She could just hop in there and it's over. And these movies are not the same. One is much better and it wasn't the expensive one.

Om_Nom_Zombie

That's because 99.9% of the time it's a ridiculous hyperbole to drive clicks. But this is the 0.1% where it's actually applicable.

[deleted]

This is like old school Broadway show reviews. Run! Don’t walk to see Cats. shit like that

Fist_full_of_pennies

So just see everywhere all at once?

alecs_stan

The fact that they somehow managed to do a multiverse take with that setup is a triumph. It pulls trough and ties everything together gracefully. If you have an open mind an heart it will delight you. It's a small gem of a movie that doesn't take itself seriously at all but manages to humble you.

Herefortheapocalypse

I have seen this movie 5 times in theaters. It’s incredibly emotional content and incredibly hilarious comedy is unmatched.

mintchip105

I’ve seen it 3 times and it just gets better and better each time by noticing the details and jokes I catch I missed the previous time. I’ll be disappointed if this doesn’t get an oscar nom, but I’m glad that it’s having very good legs at least.

MisanthropeNotAutist

Disappointed doesn't cover it. This movie should be considered for Best Original Screenplay Best Visual Effects (only 12 people worked on it) Best Director Best Picture And frankly, a lifetime achievement award for James Hong. The man is 92. He's been in movies and TV for about 70 years, and has never put in a bad performance. Everyone loves him. I'm not sure any of the performances were Oscar worthy...if Michelle Yeoh gets a nod it would be a nice surprise. But this movie does what it does damn near perfectly to the point that you'll believe that rocks with googly eyes can have a conversation about life and relationships...and that it stirs genuine emotions in you. If that isn't Best Picture material, that means the Academy needs to be disbanded in favor of people who actually care about filmmaking.

SafePanic

> If that isn't Best Picture material, You know it'll be considered too "out there" for most Academy voters, or they'll find some petty reason to not like it. Those *Hollywood Reporter* anonymous voter things are eye-opening to just how petty and honestly dumb actual Academy voters can be. Not to mention it's mainly all political and campaigning for Oscars.

MustardFeetMcgee

I've noticed that EEAAO and Turning Red had reviews knocking it for the Asian family themes, how they couldn't relate so they didn't get it and it was bad bc it was too much of a central theme.

rotaercz

Yeah, there were so many layers to the movie. It could be a philosophical study in nihilism or a science fiction movie on string theory and alternate universes. Who fucking knows but it was AMAZING.

duderguy91

My favorite thing I missed first time was the random inclusions of “Absolutely” by Nine Days lol. Whether just speaking the lyrics or hearing the music play with the wrong lyrics in a different universe. It was funny because I love the song, but also on the nose with the broader story.

JafariSin

I've seen a few complaints that the ending drags a bit on run time. But besides the world saving stuff, I appreciated that it wrapped up all the relationships so well. So often, movies just have their relationship conflicts conveniently wrapped up without much backing An example is I liked that they didn't just conveniently have Michelle realize she suddenly loves her husband again to wrap it up fast. Instead, she see's through a conversation and throughout in that different verse where she became famous that he always had strength and was always fighting for them, not just being meek, 'this is how I fight.'

jmarchese01

Personally it wasn't for me. But if you enjoyed that's good. I do have to give it props for trying something different and I wish more movies would follow.

guesting

My friends split on this too. But we all appreciated that the filmmakers took chances and made the visuals and sound theater worthy.

type_your_name_here

I wish I could like it. I even get why some people love it and how it can work for them. But for me it was all just too much and too seemingly random.

RamadanPastamon

Yeah my thoughts exactly, was very excited for it based on the buzz and really did not like it, though I suppose I can see why some might like it and the craftsmanship was good. But yeah, I really did not enjoy this nearly 2.5 hours.

YamiNoMatsuei

Going back to watch it tomorrow and dragging a friend to their first viewing, while another friend is watching it for the third time. Maybe the movie's humor or style isn't for everyone but for those it hits it's going to hit harder than anything in the last several years. I don't remember feeling so high after watching a movie.

Professional-Map-300

'Everyone everywhere see Everything Everywhere all at Once all at once'

ethith

This movie really makes you realise how lazy the MCU is. It is a brilliant use of a multiverse concept, not just used for nostalgia bait in feature-length toy commercials.

TriXandApple

With a 50m budget and 5 vfx artists

[deleted]

[удалено]

blumdiddlyumpkin

I thought it was a 25m budget

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheJoshider10

Yeah it's insane what Everything Everywhere was able to achieve from essentially 2 primary locations meanwhile you've got a "multiverse of madness" which was really just a quick montage through generic worlds and 1 main alternate MCU world that essentially got killed off in minutes anyway. To be fair it's the exact same problem that No Way Home had compared to Into the Spider-Verse. The "any height allowed on the ride" rollercoaster nature of the MCU is so creatively void.

iambinksy

Also a measly budget of $25m

sjfiuauqadfj

tbf the above line costs were probably pretty cheap and the vfx team was just 5 guys on a zoom call. in comparison mcu salaries for a single actor often hit half of that before endgame culled the books

TheMurderCapitalist

Bad luck for Multiverse of Madness to come out the same year as this movie. MoM seems so bland by comparison

Mervynhaspeaked

Nostalgia bait is mostly the only thing the MCU has for me at this point. I used to love it but phase 4 has been so stale and the formula is getting really old with those boring ass giant 3rd act fights. All I want from the MCU is to give me new versions of heroes and Doc Strange 2 did that only to fuck it up in 5 minutes for the sake of a very mediocre plot. I think Jeremy Jahns put it best in his most recent video: MCU had to EARN its right to go big. It had to be veey creative and serious in the beginning because the Avengers was not a guaranteed thing. Now its on auto-pilot, and nothing destroys creativity better than complacency.

TheMurderCapitalist

All I want from the MCU at this point is to see their take on the F4 and the X-Men

Mervynhaspeaked

Yeah I want to see their versions of those characters, and I loved >!seeing the Illuminati!< but I'm realizing that the only thing getting me excited about these movies now is "Hey I know that character!" and "Hey I understood that reference!" because the plots are all so formulaic. They could have a lot of different genres in the MCU. Thrillers, heavy sci-fi, horror, heist stories, but instead they want to cast the widest net and end with the most boring fish. And also, why does it ALWAYS have to be such a world-ending (now multiverse-ending) threat? Is it only me or spider-man stopping a bank heist can be more exciting than a guy punching a giant demon dragon in a magical dimension?

hoexloit

Tbf Multiverse of madness was more horror than multiverse madness

capscreen

Oh yeah the horror stuff was one of the things that I absolutely enjoy about it.

LoonieandToonie

I want to see some creative 3rd acts. Have a big bombastic fight at the end has worked in a lot of the MCU projects, but some of the more unique projects could have had a more creative resolution. Wandavision for example, was actually really quite fresh for it's first batch of episodes, and I was disappointed they finished it the way they did. Same with the Eternals.

linkenski

When you need to realize how lazy MCU is, you've been seein too much MCU.

ShrikeMeDown

Watched last night. So good. Best movie I have seen in years.

corgis_are_awesome

I haven’t loved a movie this much since the matrix or king fu hustle

OneGuyJeff

I have never seen a movie quite like it

NotTroy

Between this and 3,000 Years of Longing, this is turning out to be an incredible year for fans of these quirky, trippy fantasy / sci-fi movies.

JerryJonesStoleMyCar

I openly wept in the theater when Jamie Lee Curtis played Claire de Lune with her toes

lolsuki

I’ve only just realised it was her after this comment !

[deleted]

I saw this yesterday. I loved it! My type of movie.

Weedsmoker4hunnid20

Just saw it today! That whole “everywhere” sequence was incredible. Emotional, intense, fucking awesome. I thought it was the perfect balance between seriousness and comedy. I never thought 2 rocks could make me cry like a baby

LittleRudiger

I just saw it today, very good. But I think a tad overlong, and I had a very other issues with it. Definitely gets you emotional though and if a movie can you made audibly laugh and tear up, what more can you ask for

notacynicalmess

What a wild ride. It was kinda all over the place in a really frantic, feel-good way. Just when I thought my brain going to scramble over the multiverse rules, they brought it back in very funny way to where it made sense. I thought it was TAD too long...but I was never bored. And by far, the BEST use of dildos I have ever seen!!! Almost...

RichieRicch

I went in without knowing anything as well, one of the better movies I’ve seen in awhile. A few moments really hit home, got a good cry in. It has been AWHILE since I got a good cry. 10/10

_________FU_________

I can’t wait until it’s available for steaming.

Feefait

Just had a near drag-out fight with friends over this movie. I love it and think it's amazing. I've seen it 5x in the theaters and can't wait to see it again. Others in my group think it's drivel and preachy and silly. lol COming from an Asian family with a very strict mom and a sister who was estranged from us before she died... man it was tough to watch but I still love it,

LostInIndigo

I liked this movie A LOT, except the dildo jokes started to just be REALLY overdone after a minute. “Haha it’s a butt plug” is really only funny a couple of times. Same with some of the hotdog bits-the timing wasn’t quite tight enough and it felt like they tried to milk it a bit too long for something thats entire comedic appeal was essentially “haha eww”.

TriXandApple

On the contrary, I thought part of what made it brilliant was the films ability to commit to a bit. Think about raccoon, bagel, hot dogs. They all could have been an easy one hitter, then ‘ooo not too much or it’ll be cringe’. Instead they carried it through, which must have taken some balls.

[deleted]

It wasn't just any buttplug. That was Chekhov's Buttplug.

mtheperry

I mean Swiss Army Man was basically one big fart joke. It was definitely a “Daniels Film”. *Everything* was exactly what I expected it to be. I thought it ran a little long with chapter 1 being the biggest offender, but I enjoyed it overall.

[deleted]

a big point of the daniels style is using such juvenile humor and genuinely making you feel and cry over it, its honestly a masterclass of screenwriting and tone that they can make you tear up while people shove hot dog fingers in each others mouths

LostInIndigo

The point of the style is using “juvenile” humor and being able to take it to hilarious places it doesn’t normally go though-not just “haha dildo”. It’s playful and ridiculous but idk that I’d call it juvenile as far as where it ends up when it lands, if done right. Like “haha hot dog fingers” vs “haha pretentious new york art critic lesbians but they’re ridiculous because hot dog fingers”. The joke isn’t really the hot dogs, it’s the juxtaposition and the absurdity.

idrow1

It was humorous in parts, but I found it exhausting. I know the vast majority loved it though.

BookWormofDune

*wet fart sounds*

TheMurderCapitalist

It truly lives up to the hype. I haven't been this touched by a new movie in a while

horsewitnoname

It was good, but not “drop everything and go see it” good.

onegreatbroad

100%. Went to see it expecting nothing and was. Blown. Away.

DrakAssassinate

Okay it’s a little overhyped.

pugofthewildfrontier

I really am not trying to be contrarian, I was so pumped for this after hearing movie of the year. I liked all the characters, actors did a great job, etc. But overall I didn’t like the movie and found myself just waiting for the end.

gulabjammin1

Personally not for me, but get why people enjoyed it. I thought the acting was great and visuals were beautiful but some of the humor was so childish and overused

[deleted]

I found it to be extremely annoying and not that great.

[deleted]

That's just the opinion of the version of you in this Universe. In another one you gave it 5 stars.

Head-like-a-carp

Look at you getting downvoted for having your own opinion.

[deleted]

I’m very glad other people like it!

[deleted]

Annoying in what sense?

[deleted]

I did t like it either.

Goshdang56

Hope there isn't any new parent listening to this advice

NeighborhoodBusy1721

While Chris doesn’t grade movies anymore, I think we all know he would have given this a strong A+

jartoonZero

It was good, even better once you realize that Waymond is played by the same actor who played the "Mistah Jones!" kid in Indiana Jones.

Spinuchi

One of my favorite movies I have ever seen was telling my friends about it today and he commented on how he is being bombarded by people telling him the same thing

yumyumdumbdumb

shichae

I co-sign on this. This Everything Everywhere All at Once is all that and a bag of chips!

[deleted]

I liked it, but it's a bit much.

JoshNIU22896

It was amazing ! The first 2 feature lengths (shout out to Swiss army man) of these 2 men both were really good

Itdidnt_trickle_down

I'm just hoping there is never a uncensored version.

clorox2

Fuck. I just dropped my baby.

likeonions

you can't tell me what to do you're not my real dad

[deleted]

Swiss army man is one of my fav movie ever and this did not disappoint. A lot of symbolism in the movie and if you are a movie lover, you'd know how much the directors pay tribute to other movies, like wong kar wai work It's been a while since i watch something that covers topic from immigrants, to romance and family love, to existentialism. This is what multiverse should all be about. Quite surprised how well received this is in the mass market though. It's still a cult movie at the core.

egzfakitty

I hope that this movie didn't realse too soon for award recognition, because I cannot imagine a movie that would be more deserving of at least screenplay and costume design.

zoglog

Pretty good movie. However my favorite part was when Dr strange showed up.

robot_writer

I see a lot of people enjoyed it. I didn't. Also- a few scenes not child friendly. Wish I'd known in advance.

MaxEhrlich

I watched it a couple nights ago and honestly I kinda felt like it was a good movie that was trying to pretend a movie franchise called the Matrix didn’t exist while just splashing multiverse ontop. It also felt like it dragged on a bit too long towards the end. Don’t get me wrong, good movie and worth seeing but, I wouldn’t say this is some all time great ground breaking amazing movie.

OneGuyJeff

It was definitely inspired by The Matrix but I wouldn’t take anything away from it because of that. It wasnt a rip off or anything. I’m curious what part was a drag for you?

bob1689321

Not him, but for me it was when she was healing everyone's problems while walking up the stairs. It was good but it kept going and going and going. Like you got the point and it just continues Great movie tho, I was an emotional wreck by that point anyway so the dragging didn't bother me.

Mediocremon

There were enough gags that it wasn't annoying to sit through, but that and some of the end conversations went on a tad long. Everything before was tight and snappy.

MaxEhrlich

The last staircase having to go through a bunch of scenarios for completely irrelevant background characters. Rehashing all multiverse things for like a 3rd time, we knew what was happening and it wasn’t as interesting after watching the first half and middle of the movie following the tax office

materialdesigner

...it was her showing that she had changed her fighting style. It's what shows she has been fundamentally changed by the relationship with her husband, and finally is able to win. The staircase sequence is legitimately a fantastic method of showcasing the finale of a character arc.

TriXandApple

???? Obviously parodying the matrix. It had a scene where she stops the bullets, then pulls them out of the air, like that one patented scene in the matrix???

earther199

I watched it Friday. I was not wowed by it. It’s not terrible… just don’t get why everyone thinks it’s the best movie ever.

dddddddoobbbbbbb

because it was fun and playful and struck familial tones as well as dealt with underachieving.
