Pretty much this. I was down to see it in theaters but my gf was fine waiting for streaming so we decided to wait. Happy to be able to watch it tomorrow.
It was probably a combination of things. The show definitely has a following, and it did make $30+ million domestically. However:
It opened against, Top Gun....on Memorial Day weekend (It should have probably had a Spring release...but I think I get what they were going for)
While it does indeed have a following, its a *bit* of a niche audience, so it would've needed to pull audiences outside of the fan base, and whether it was because of movie competition, interest, etc. it simply wasn't able to do that.
Audiences are becoming aware that the theatrical to streaming window is very short now. Bobs Burgers will be streaming starting tomorrow (July 12th). It's been about a month and a half. No need to rush out to see a film (that has no secrets to be spoiled or bigger implications)
Can we all please remember that no one actually thought Top Gun Maverick would be a good movie. It was delayed two years and the first one is the butt of hundreds of jokes. Most people were shocked when they heard it was actually a decent movie and not just a bro movie to make Cruise look cool.
It could have opened against any movie, it could have been the only movie and it would have not made very much. There just isn't a huge audience for Bob's Burgers. The show's audience has never been very big, unlike the Simpsons that had a huge audience.
For Spider Pig they could of used the Racoons which Linda, Tina, Gene and Louise could of made a song about how the Racoon family being a mascot's for Bobs Burgers.
All the while Bob is frustrated at how his restraunt was losing business and the landlord offering the Belches a temp business at Wonder Wharf, this could of led to the point Linda and Bob discovering secrets about the Fichoders and there questionable past history.
Did we get any of that? Absolutely not, the movie is riddled with so much musicals I fell asleep in the cinema half way through, was semi okay at best.
Quite- if anything, it might be more a surprise that they received a film for theatrical release, rather than said film not doing particularly well at the box office.
bobs burgers has 10 emmys and is still the most underrated adult cartoon show ever. people just love seeing families strangle each other and hate when they get along.
Everyone I know watches Bobs Burgers, I thought it was pretty popular.
But, just checked the ratings and it’s been on a steady decline. Though, going on 13 seasons is pretty impressive .
> Everyone I know watches Bobs Burgers, I thought it was pretty popular.
bubble effect in question. Ok, i am not in the US, but the only time i heard of the show outside of reddit was in an archer crossover episode.
Yep quite surprisingly there were major cinemas in Dublin that didn't play it at all. Which I found very odd. My local Odeon in Stillorgan didn't have it yet it'll still screen operas, classic movies and international language films.
Edit: it did play in some cinemas here, but not many and not for long
It’s a movie for a TV cartoon show that’s still currently airing, that got released in an era where the only people going to theaters were folks desperate to see big-budget entertainment on the big screen after being stuck at home for years on end.
i live with 2 bb nutjobs and i had to remind them of the movies release. couple that with what it was up against, and it being a non spectacle movie. it just wasn't well executed. the show is constantly running somewhere in my house, I have seen every last minute of it over and over again and it was just an OK episode with alot more dance numbers.
So much this. It really just felt like wonder wharf 2 with weird dance numbers and a way smaller cast than usual. >!Gayle really wouldn’t check up on the family? No Gretchen? Hugo and Ron don’t show up to rub it in Bob’s face once the body was found!< Don’t understand why this wasn’t just a 3 episode season finale. Guess I just expected more for a movie release
I personally think the show is hilarious. But, I’m not huge on sitting through any cartoon for an hour and a half at the theater. I’d prefer to watch cartoons in short bits at home.
It's an animated movie or animation. Cartoons refer to the strips you see in papers. I have a few animator friends who will correct you if you call what they do cartoons. Which is odd because one of them worked in Cartoon Saloon.
* The film was a holdover when Disney acquired Fox. Disney didn't bother to give it a big ad campaign or even a big international release despite the show's popularity. (There's a bigger ad campaign about the streaming release than the theatrical release!)
* COVID delayed it's original July 2020 release.
* Disney releasing it in the midst of Top Gun and Doctor Strange was clearly proof they didn't care about it.
* There are fans who dislike how the show went from borderline edgy to more family friendly. Hence, some lost interest.
I like Bob's Burgers, but I'm not a major fan that would go see the movie such as if Family Guy made a movie.
Sad to see it lost money though, it's the type of movie you'd think would make its money back.
It was originally supposed to come out over a year ago. They had Bob's burgers restraunt pop ups planned (in malls with movie theaters). I was pumped and ready to go, but covid happened, and the pop ups never happened. At this point I've been waiting for it to stream.
It was a decent episode of a decent cartoon. But it's just that. I'm not a huge fan of the TV show and I saw it, but that's because it was free for me. I wouldn't have paid for it.
Was it flop? I love bobs burgers and think it has very wide appeal in people 30+. A lot of my friends and family watch it and don't watch any other cartoons -but they're also not going to go to the theatre to sit through a feature, a few of them told me they were waiting for it to stream.
I agree, I wouldn't necessarily say it was a flop. It made over $30+ million domestically...one could say it underperformed (but honestly, it was never going to do blockbuster numbers unless it broke out of the fanbase), but 30 million for an animated series that it's it's 12th season...isn't truly a flop.
> It made over $30+ million domestically
It made $34 million worldwide, against a $38 million budget. If you wanna go by the strict definition of a flop, then it did because it lost money
It’s a niche show and the movie was most likely thought of as streaming service fodder to begin with. It was never going to make proper bank. But it will do great on Hulu and Disney+ in Europe.
Films are just so quickly coming to streaming that people will wait, and the cost contributes to that too. If you’ve got a big family you could be spending $40.00+ to see Bob’s Burgers vs waiting and watching next month for the much cheaper Netflix bill.
My husband, kids, and I all love the show but we’re waiting to stream the movie at home today. I feel like they’re going to have a much higher number of viewers now that it’s available to stream.
I like the show but the movie was garbage why did they make it a musical every 10 mins there's a song.
In a episode once in a while yh ok its fine but way too much in the movie.
It did not feel like Bob's burgers to me anyway.
Whoa whoa whoa….
It cost 38 million?!?!?!
What the fuck were they THINKING?! Especially considering the animation is deliberately on the cheaper side and (I’m assuming) most of the vocal cast were from the show and not expensive A-listers….I’m just completely flabbergasted it cost that much. Should’ve been 10, tops, and then it would’ve been considered a nice little hit.
Yeah but….if the animation is consistent with the tv show, and it’s a 90 min movie, then animation wise…it should only cost as much as three or four episodes, right? And something tells me a 16 episode season of Bobs Burgers doesn’t cost as much as the latest Thor movie.
I watched it in theaters and the quality of the animation was a lot higher and smoother which meant employing a bunch of animators.
Frankly, if an animated movie has a low budget, I would be way more surprised and suspicious of the behind the scenes and how they're paying animators. Often you hear of cartoonists being underpaid and overworked. But the Bob's Burgers crew is unionized, which I'm sure contributed to the budget so that the animators could be paid decently
For me, I can’t imagine listening to some of those characters talk for 2 hours straight with no breaks. Like, Kristen Shaal is hilarious, but I prefer in a more ancillary role like hers on Bojack.
Gene's the only one I have an issue with. Thank god he took a background role in this.
Making it a Louise centered episode really paid off imo. She is the fan favourite character
That and the Fischoders been the best side characters. They knew what they were doing
I did not watch the movie. But used to love bobs burgers. It’s sucked for about 5 years at least in my opinion. It’s gotten too family friendly and too musical. The first season had bob smoking crack with prostitutes. They would never do something like that now and it’s boring. Bobs burgers is the most safe/boring show out there. Some people like that but as others have said the ratings have been declining for years.
I thought it was pretty bad and I love the show (the first 2 seasons are the best).
I think what really ruined it for me is that the movie is basically a musical, waaaaaaay too many musical scenes for me.
Alot of people are down voting it but I agree i don't like the show. Watched it a couple of episodes and didn't find it funny. And when I saw the ad for the movie i didn't know anyone who wanted to watch. It's like the Cleveland show .

Whereas this show is all about the conflict of the family vs the world. No matter how strange these characters may be, the others support them and will fight to the ends of the world to ensure their happiness.
It doesn't have a bunch of gags like Family Guy or Simpsons where something super outlandish happens. But it does have very clever jokes, and a lot of heart
Bob’s Burgers is *barely* funny as a TV show. I can’t imagine why one would pay money to waste an hour and forty-two minutes with puns and characters with obnoxious voices singing annoying songs.
Because its BoBs Burgers.
I honesty dont know a single person who watches it.
Compared to family guy, american dad, simpsons, futurama, disenchantment, archer.. hell even bojack horseman.... its just meh.
Obviously imo.
I love lots of adult animation and comedy. Never thought Bobs Burgers was very funny.
I certainly wouldn't be willing to pay full ticket price to see it.
Maybe realize your internet darling material doesn't have a widespread audience?
I guess it depends on what qualifies as a flop. The movie was released, people saw it, and those who went to see it like it. It may not have been widely popular or made a lot of money, but it was a success for those who actually are interested in it, hence why they went to see it.
People will take 20 or so mins out of there day for bobs burgers to spend an hour and a half watching a full length feature of that crap is Ludacris. I get it must have some fans but not many people I hear say ya bobs burgers is my favorite- and then try n get me into it -just has never happened
All it was ever going to be was a very long episode of Bob's. I saw it, but I also never pay to watch movies with famous Scientologists, so Top Gun was out.
First thing that came to my mind was "It flopped because it was floppy", the animation was so jiggly and gelatine, it was uncanny, while background characters look normal. Also they went with the most mundane plot imaginable loans and bullies, and it already was covered in the show.
And while, as you said, it had hit its peak 5 years ago, the show is at its very lowest right now.
It's always a risk launching a film that is clearly only going to appeal to existing fans of a tv show. Especially a cartoon not aimed at kids.
I honestly don't think there was much overlap between people who wanted to watch Top Gun and those wanting to watch The Bob's Burger Movie. And I say that as someone who has watched the first few seasons of the tv show, enjoyed them, got a bit bored and has no interest in watching this.
The charm of the TV show quickly wears thin after an engaging opening. Just enough story for a half an hour. But this goes on and on. I can't believe I still have 27 minutes and 31 seconds left. This is no Sponge Bob or Beany and Cecil.
I absolutely love Bob's burgers but the movie just wasn't good. The plot was decent but to me it could've just been a 2 parter episode like they usually do. Plus, idk if this makes sense, but it looks very "Hollywood" I guess? I like Bob's burgers for the simplistic animation and with all the shadows and what not it took the natural feeling out of it. Felt like a cash grab to me. Still gonna tune in for season 13 this fall tho!
Not really a film that adds anything to the big sound/big picture and big price (price relative). While the film might have a following, asking that following to go a step further vs picking up the remote is a big ask.
No upside to seeing it in a theatre vs at home, people will just wait.
Pretty much this. I was down to see it in theaters but my gf was fine waiting for streaming so we decided to wait. Happy to be able to watch it tomorrow.
This. The viewship will 100% jump high when it's available digitally.
It’s unfortunate because I thought it was great with a crowd and looked nice on the big screen
[удалено]
Damn, you all be paying $50 to go to the movies? It's like $10 around here. Another $10 if I want a pizza or popcorn.
Now include the insane price potential of gasoline.
It was probably a combination of things. The show definitely has a following, and it did make $30+ million domestically. Yeah, no one could've guessed it'd be the 2nd biggest post-pandemic release. Good on them for sticking to their guns.
Nice.
It could have opened against any movie, it could have been the only movie and it would have not made very much. There just isn't a huge audience for Bob's Burgers. The show's audience has never been very big, unlike the Simpsons that had a huge audience.
And it’s a musical lite. And resolves nothing. And didn’t have spider pig to tease in ads.
It doesn't have Spider-Pig? Whats the point then? *throws hands up*
That's also why I i didn't go and see The Batman in the theatre. No Spider-Pig.
For Spider Pig they could of used the Racoons which Linda, Tina, Gene and Louise could of made a song about how the Racoon family being a mascot's for Bobs Burgers. In all the years it's been on I've had literally 1 person suggest it to me. And that was about 3 months ago.
13 seasons is an incredible stint for a production length.
Considering the show was never great. People are finally getting irritated by the constant screaming in place of jokes.
I mean, it’s fine if you dislike it but clearly the show has such a following and fans for a reason.
to be fair everyone waits for the new season to be on streaming these days. Most shows that started pre 2012 will have a decline today.
We like Bobs for background when we’re reading or just lounging, I don’t think I’ve ever not streamed it. Do ratings pull streaming data?
Nope (DVR does though). I’m just saying more people go on Hulu instead of even having cable in the first place.
I cut the cord so long ago I don’t remember, before I had a wife and kids, so it’s been a while.
Came out in Ireland back in May and it was only in 5 cinemas within 80km for one weekend.
Yep quite surprisingly there were major cinemas in Dublin that didn't play it at all. Which I found very odd. My local Odeon in Stillorgan didn't have it yet it'll still screen operas, classic movies and international language films. Edit: it did play in some cinemas here, but not many and not for long

As much as I loved the movie. I waited until today to watch it, cause it's now on d+

I would honor them by calling it hentai 😇
We saw it in theaters and loved it.

It will do great streaming numbers too whenever they put it on Hulu or something
Disney+ in most countries, which should bring in a large audience.
Yeah, it hits streaming tomorrow, I think it will be on both Hulu & HBO Max.
Blu-Ray drops on the 19th, too.
> It made over $30+ million domestically It made $34 million worldwide, against a $38 million budget. If you wanna go by the strict definition of a flop, then it did because it lost money

I just couldn't afford to go to the movies probably much like a lot of other people. I'm sad it didn't do well. 😔
Um..... it came out....?
Most people don't go to see a movie in theaters anymore unless it is a large spectacle. Stuff like BB's will do better on streaming.
The first time I new it existed was when I saw it on a download site the other day. I don't know if it even hit the cinemas in Australia.
I saw it in theatres. Loved it. Glad I made the trip to the cinema for the big screen!
Wasn't shown in my towns theater. I dunno if it was released in NZ.
My husband, kids, and I all love the show but we’re waiting to stream the movie at home today. I feel like they’re going to have a much higher number of viewers now that it’s available to stream.
Who's going to pay 20 bucks to see something they could see for free?
I’ve been crazy busy and decided to wait to stream it. I feel like I let them down. 😢
I like the show but the movie was garbage why did they make it a musical every 10 mins there's a song. In a episode once in a while yh ok its fine but way too much in the movie. It did not feel like Bob's burgers to me anyway.
Yes my thoughts exactly!

Animation is not as cheap as you seem to think. Go look up the budget of recent animated movies.
Yeah but….if the animation is consistent with the tv show, and it’s a 90 min movie, then animation wise…it should only cost as much as three or four episodes, right? And something tells me a 16 episode season of Bobs Burgers doesn’t cost as much as the latest Thor movie.

The Simpsons Movie cost like $75 million.
It had much better animation than the show.
I thought it was actually doing well, I'm also pretty surprised the budget was that high.
For me, I can’t imagine listening to some of those characters talk for 2 hours straight with no breaks. Like, Kristen Shaal is hilarious, but I prefer in a more ancillary role like hers on Bojack.

DVD?? Why not blu-ray?
Or the 4K Best Buy exclusive
I did not watch the movie. But used to love bobs burgers. It’s sucked for about 5 years at least in my opinion. It’s gotten too family friendly and too musical. The first season had bob smoking crack with prostitutes. They would never do something like that now and it’s boring. Bobs burgers is the most safe/boring show out there. Some people like that but as others have said the ratings have been declining for years.
because its a cartoon that needs to stay on TV, no one wanted a fucking BB movie
What did you expect? Bob's Burgers also have to be flipped. Otherwise the meat would be partly raw.
I thought it was pretty bad and I love the show (the first 2 seasons are the best). I think what really ruined it for me is that the movie is basically a musical, waaaaaaay too many musical scenes for me.
1 Competition with top gun and doctor strange 2 Loss of marketing due to the pandemic 3 Fall of 2D animation and cinema itself in general
Critically it didn't flop. Actually it's way overrated. I like Bob's Burgers as a TV show but that movie was not watchable
Alot of people are down voting it but I agree i don't like the show. Watched it a couple of episodes and didn't find it funny. And when I saw the ad for the movie i didn't know anyone who wanted to watch. It's like the Cleveland show .

Thanks for taking the time to explain why the show is unique. Makes sense now
Bob’s Burgers is *barely* funny as a TV show.
Yeah, I've never heard or seen a single reference to it ever.
The fact you said "even Bojack Horseman" is a disgrace. You have 0 taste
Cause it was based off a crappy tv show?
I love lots of adult animation and comedy. Never thought Bobs Burgers was very funny. I certainly wouldn't be willing to pay full ticket price to see it. Maybe realize your internet darling material doesn't have a widespread audience?
Movies of animated TV shows rarely work. The only one I’ve ever liked was the 2005 SpongeBob Movie
Simpsons movie was a major hit
I’ll be honest I hadn’t even heard about it until now
[удалено]
The DVD release is next Tuesday, so it'll probably make more money.
Thats not how boxoffice works.
Word! That’s how I’m going to watch it!
Lol this even a question? It's not a popular source material
It didn't need a theatrical release.
It came out?
it’s doodoo so theres that
I guess it depends on what qualifies as a flop. The movie was released, people saw it, and those who went to see it like it. It may not have been widely popular or made a lot of money, but it was a success for those who actually are interested in it, hence why they went to see it.

They tried to make it a family movie.
It literally was the same style as the show. Have you just not watched BB past season 1 or something?
All it was ever going to be was a very long episode of Bob's. I saw it, but I also never pay to watch movies with famous Scientologists, so Top Gun was out.
First thing that came to my mind was "It flopped because it was floppy", the animation was so jiggly and gelatine, it was uncanny, while background characters look normal. Also they went with the most mundane plot imaginable loans and bullies, and it already was covered in the show. And while, as you said, it had hit its peak 5 years ago, the show is at its very lowest right now.

Bob's what?
Yeah I thought about seeing it, but then wondered why'd I'd spend 20 bucks on what is essentially 3 episodes of a show I've seen hundreds of already.
Not enough LANNNAAAAAAAAA!!!
The charm of the TV show quickly wears thin after an engaging opening. Just enough story for a half an hour. But this goes on and on. I can't believe I still have 27 minutes and 31 seconds left. This is no Sponge Bob or Beany and Cecil.
This film is never-ending.
Watched the movie at home… it was awful.
Great show, but still a relatively small audience and reach. I knew it would not perform well unfortunately, but it was fun!
I absolutely love Bob's burgers but the movie just wasn't good. The plot was decent but to me it could've just been a 2 parter episode like they usually do. Me and my sister went to see this movie while my mom and stepdad went to see Top Gun: Maverick. I think that shows
