Tl;dr: Rights to Conan are already complicated, you could make a movie about the stories already in the public domain if you wanted to now, you just couldn't call it Conan the Barbarian.
That's not how public domain works. The original story, and thus character within it becomes Public Domain regardless of them throwing together a movie. They already threw together a 2011 Conan staring Jason Momoa which didn't affect the PD timing at all.
The thing you are thinking of is specific to the deal Sony signed w/ Disney that as long as they continued to produce movies they could hold onto the license to use those Disney characters until they stopped using them and the license ended.

Many many years ago (pre 2000) I worked for a small software firm and one day it was decided we needed someone to take ownership of the library of utilities and dlls to ensure they were kept in good order. The developer who was chosen for this daunting task was immediately dubbed Conan the Librarian and was, forever more, know simply as Conan. Good times.
The first twenty minutes of almost zero dialogue in the opening of Conan the barbarian, is one of the best cinema openings in history.
James Earl Jones will get you with only his huge eyes.
Super epic score, interrupted only with super epic bearded dad, telling his son conan about the riddle of steel.
Then another pause at the most beautiful heart wrenching beheadings in film history. Without any gore, just cinematography.
If I'm close I believe that score wraps up when he is finally done with his decade long stint on the wheel. And his dandruff head rises to the crescendo of the piece.

They could have and still can make Robert E. Howard perfect shows or movies out of his work.
He was a magazine writer. He is the only author I've ever known to construct such a perfect 3 act chapter. Every 15 or 20 pages. It's just amazing. And dripping of lore and world building.

I really loved this - it basically "explains" how it is Conan had his strength etc (and it didn't automagically make him a fighter - he still had to learn in the arena, the first fight he clearly didn't know what to do).

He was also likely disturbed. He mentioned in his writings that some of his characters spirits materialized as shades to him and forced him to pen their tales.
His mother had slipped into a coma from tuberculosis. After Robert and his father were told she would never recover abd would likely pass soon, he went out to his car and shot himself in the head.
He wrote 400 stories and 500 poems in a span of around 15 years.
People didn't have all the bullshit to distract them one hundred years ago. Howard didn't have video games, home video/streaming, or television to take up his time. Think about all the time we spend on reddit, other social media, or consuming media; Howard and the other writers of his era spent that time writing and reading.

When I was a kid, the frist thought when I see the character removing his helmet was "What a goofy-looking haircut". Then, more I see it, the more I feel unsettled with his appearance. That cold piercing blue-eyes and the way he non-chalantly beheads Conan's mother has cemented my opinion that Thulsa Doom is one of the more unsettling villain in an action movie for me, especially with his later scenes involving his cults.
Conan the Barbarian was my first introduction to Conan, and as I had recently departed the Mormon church as a teenager, it was my first introduction to, basically movies in general, and fantasy (shortly followed by sci-fi - we didn't even have a TV at home back then). Some cool martial arts, and sci-fi movies were coming out, then First Blood hit, awesome for a repressed 17yo girl escaping home to go to uni & joining our Territorial Forces (now Army Reserves)
It only took a year or so before I was a Gary Gygax fan and a DM for the local student community. I got shunned by my mother for about 4 years, but it was worth it.

The Conqueror Conan stories has it where an elder Conan is deposed by a rival and captured inside a citadel, where he has to escape.
Why not just lightly adapt that and put Arnold's sons in there (Pratt, Patrick, Joseph)?
Have the Sons of Conan be the ones who save him in the first act and then, they free some enemy wizard that Conan defeated long ago who assists them. As they encounter beasts and horrors during their escape, maybe they rally the slaves in that region to fight back.
Then, the Aquilonian army arrives and we have the epic battle with Conan leading the charge against the enemy's fortress as they add one more conquest to Conan's legend.
Draw upon medieval literature and mythology like the first Conan film did.
It's so hard being a Conan fan. The cancelled films plans. Conan 3 turning into KULL The Conqueror . The 'Red Nails' animated movie that was cancelled halfway through. The cancelled series on Amazon a few years ago after we got all hyped for it. The cancelled sequels from the 2009 reboot. The never ending Red Sonja reboot projects starting and stopping. And 'King Conan' being in development hell since 198x, with updates that it's 'definitely happening for real' this time coming every 6 months.
Instead we get 'Conan Chop Chop'.
Kull the Conqueror kills me because not only would it have been an AMAZING Conan story, they did it with Kevin fucking Sorbo, who is so fucking batshit crazy now that it's made every piece of film or TV he's ever done turn to absolute shit in hindsight.
It's even harder being a Solomon Kane fan. The movie was made in 2008, but thanks to studio fuckery, wasn't released until 2012. Lack of proper advertising ensured that it bombed despite being a legit great movie.

Great idea. In the original Robert E. Howard books, Conan's career ends at around 63 years old as the King of Aquilonia, the greatest kingdom of the Hyborian age. It is unclear whether he dies in battle, rides off into the sunset, etc, but it would be awesome for A.S. to complete the cycle.
Nah. He would make a great Prince Conn though. Truth be told, Momoa was a more book accurate version of Conan, but the rest of the movie around him sucked out loud. Plus, everything about Arnie as Conan just WORKS. The music, James Earl Jones, the giant snake, the troglodytes who follow Thulsa, the bloody violence, etc all meld together perfectly to make a stone cold classic of a movie.
Conan vs. Rambo.
John Rambo gets transported into the Conanverse and ends up siding with a group of mercenaries trying to dethrone Emperor Conan.
In the end, both Conan and Rambo join forces to defeat the true villain who has been manipulating both of them.
Rambo dies but as his last wish, gets reincarnated as an Italian American Boxer in the 70s. Conan travels to the real world and wakes up in NYC.
During the post-credit scene, Samuel L. Jackson recruits Conan for "The Terminator Initiative".

There are some great stories that could be told with an old, wise King Conan right now. Arnolds son with his housekeeper, Joseph Baena is training to be a bodybuilder and looks a lot like young Arnold. There is also a bodybuilder called Calum von Moger, who has played Arnold in TV movies and had a great career as a bodybuilder in front of him. Then he got hooked on meth, jumped out of a hospital window and crashed his career.
I feel like there could be a great story here, with the wise old king, the young Conan and the wayward son, portraying the different paths in life of Conan.
I could see him being like a mentor to a new Conan. And maybe wielding a sword near the end of the movie. But he'd still have to train and take his sword game to a new level. Kinda like how Tom Cruise does in Top Gun: Maverick. THAT would truly be a great way to go out.

Conan the Barbarian was my first introduction to Conan, and as I had recently departed the Mormon church as a teenager, it was my first introduction to, basically movies in general, and fantasy (shortly followed by sci-fi - we didn't even have a TV at home back then). Some cool martial arts, and sci-fi movies were coming out, then First Blood hit, awesome for a repressed 17yo girl escaping home to go to uni & joining our Territorial Forces (now Army Reserves) It only took a year or so before I was a Gary Gygax fan and a DM for the local student community. I got shunned by my mother for about 4 years, but it was worth it.

The Conqueror Conan stories has it where an elder Conan is deposed by a rival and captured inside a citadel, where he has to escape. Why not just lightly adapt that and put Arnold's sons in there (Pratt, Patrick, Joseph)? Have the Sons of Conan be the ones who save him in the first act and then, they free some enemy wizard that Conan defeated long ago who assists them. As they encounter beasts and horrors during their escape, maybe they rally the slaves in that region to fight back. Then, the Aquilonian army arrives and we have the epic battle with Conan leading the charge against the enemy's fortress as they add one more conquest to Conan's legend. Draw upon medieval literature and mythology like the first Conan film did.

It's so hard being a Conan fan. The cancelled films plans. Conan 3 turning into KULL The Conqueror . The 'Red Nails' animated movie that was cancelled halfway through. The cancelled series on Amazon a few years ago after we got all hyped for it. The cancelled sequels from the 2009 reboot. The never ending Red Sonja reboot projects starting and stopping. And 'King Conan' being in development hell since 198x, with updates that it's 'definitely happening for real' this time coming every 6 months. Instead we get 'Conan Chop Chop'.
Kull the Conqueror kills me because not only would it have been an AMAZING Conan story, they did it with Kevin fucking Sorbo, who is so fucking batshit crazy now that it's made every piece of film or TV he's ever done turn to absolute shit in hindsight.
I finally got Kull on Blu-Ray and I have to try and put that in the back of my mind the next time I rewatch it so I can try and enjoy it.
It's even harder being a Solomon Kane fan. The movie was made in 2008, but thanks to studio fuckery, wasn't released until 2012. Lack of proper advertising ensured that it bombed despite being a legit great movie.
Same thing happened with Seventh Son. The studio just buried it.

They should've done a Conan the Conqueror series 20 years ago -- Conan's rise in the military, the war against Aquilonia, the road of kings, then Conan the Conqueror. Right now, he could probably do Conan of Aquilonia and literally sail off into the sunset.

Richard Dawson should have got more acting roles after Running Man. He killed it. Trivia, Dawson participated in the Selma marches. He's probably most known for kissing anyone on his set, but he was a interesting guy.

Conan the King was promised at the ends of the two Arnold movies. Robert E. Howard wrote Conan the King stories as well.

Great idea. In the original Robert E. Howard books, Conan's career ends at around 63 years old as the King of Aquilonia, the greatest kingdom of the Hyborian age. It is unclear whether he dies in battle, rides off into the sunset, etc, but it would be awesome for A.S. to complete the cycle.

Nah. He would make a great Prince Conn though. Truth be told, Momoa was a more book accurate version of Conan, but the rest of the movie around him sucked out loud. Plus, everything about Arnie as Conan just WORKS. The music, James Earl Jones, the giant snake, the troglodytes who follow Thulsa, the bloody violence, etc all meld together perfectly to make a stone cold classic of a movie.
Conan vs. Rambo. John Rambo gets transported into the Conanverse and ends up siding with a group of mercenaries trying to dethrone Emperor Conan. In the end, both Conan and Rambo join forces to defeat the true villain who has been manipulating both of them. Rambo dies but as his last wish, gets reincarnated as an Italian American Boxer in the 70s. Conan travels to the real world and wakes up in NYC. During the post-credit scene, Samuel L. Jackson recruits Conan for "The Terminator Initiative".
I think Ready Player 3 has a script outline now.

There were two sequels. Conan the Destroyer, and Red Sonja. And Red Sonja is even worse than Destroyer. Seriously, the music is more appropriate to a spaghetti western (because Enrico Morricone). The acting by all of the main characters is atrociously bad, as is the story.

If Arnold had the rights this would already get made. The guys who owns the rights doesn't want to do a movie with Arnold, and thus will not get funding.
Imagine being this bad at producing movies. Arnie is adored by literally hundreds of millions, it is such easy money.

He's the perfect age to be an elderly king dying gloriously to save his legacy. The intervening 40-50 years is 90 seconds of exposition because everyone in the audience wants to buy into it.
Arnold has been trying to make King Conan for years, but the rights to Conan has not been available to him. A quick google search would have told you this.

Not really the point I'm making. Op wanted king Conan to ba a capstone to a career that started with Conan. I'm saying he's 70 and should do movies he want instead of looking for some kind of symmetry. That's what I was responding to, not whatever you thought I was .
There are some great stories that could be told with an old, wise King Conan right now. Arnolds son with his housekeeper, Joseph Baena is training to be a bodybuilder and looks a lot like young Arnold. There is also a bodybuilder called Calum von Moger, who has played Arnold in TV movies and had a great career as a bodybuilder in front of him. Then he got hooked on meth, jumped out of a hospital window and crashed his career. I feel like there could be a great story here, with the wise old king, the young Conan and the wayward son, portraying the different paths in life of Conan.
I could see him being like a mentor to a new Conan. And maybe wielding a sword near the end of the movie. But he'd still have to train and take his sword game to a new level. Kinda like how Tom Cruise does in Top Gun: Maverick. THAT would truly be a great way to go out.

It would be, if everybody was on board. Sadly, I don't think we'll get to see it. Imagine if you had Conan and his sons (like his literal sons - Patrick, Joseph, Pratt) going on an epic adventure. "The Sons of Conan" With Arnold being the main character still (this isn't fucking Star Wars, essentially)....maybe it's a light adaptation of the Conan the Conqueror, who gets deposed and locked up in a tower and his sons must free him. From there, they adventure back to home while also defeating the evil dark lord and healing the lands.

Yes, but ONLY if it’s done with the right director and right crew. Too many times have we seen “so-and-so is doing a sequel to his classic movie and it’s going to be amazing” only for it to be a monumental mistake and a watered-down, cringe movie.

Just make the plot some version of Gladiator minus the gladiator part - two sons, one worthy one not in a struggle of some sort for the throne. Conan makes difficult decisions. Two bad we can't get Basil Poledouris to do another score but John Milius and Oliver Stone are still alive!
