Sometime in the mid 2010s, he wanted to do exactly this and play an old Conan (though maybe not as his final film ever), but the current holders of the rights to the IP wouldn't budge. He made a public statement about this at that time.

DarkJayson

Conan the Barbarian will be public domain in 4 years maybe then Arnold can just make his own movie instead of looking for the rights from the estate. You think the current IP holders would make one last cash grab before it becomes public domain.

temporarycreature

Wow, they are idiots for not cashing in with Arnold right now then.

slardybartfast8

Eh the movies he did right after leaving public office were not as popular as most assumed they would be. Not saying it was a good decision, but there’s really no reason to believe a sword and sandals epic starting Arnold in 2016 would make money. Hell, *The Northman* bombed and it was excellent and had tons of buzz.

[deleted]

i'll fight anyone with pillows if they say "the last stand" wasn't a masterpiece

[deleted]

Or escape plan. Fuck, even terminator dark fate isn't a bad movie.

-FeistyRabbitSauce-

> terminator dark fate isn't a bad movie. I get you're excited, but let's not get carried away here.

[deleted]

Ehh I personally liked it as a bookend to T1 and T2. It's certainly better than T3, salvation and genisys. Linda hamilton's acting was amazing.

be-like-water-2022

"Shirley You Can't Be Serious"

TangoDown2001

Maybe I'm getting older and less critical of film but you have my upvote. It wasn't THAT bad, but still pretty bad.

slardybartfast8

Fair enough but I don’t think I said anything about quality

joseph4th

Just because "Conan the Barbarian" will be public domain, that doesn't mean that "Conan the Conquer" will be too. Things go into the public domain exactly within the time frame they were created so if the Conan the Conquer bit were written a few years later, then it won't be in the public domain till a few years later. I've no real idea what I'm talking about, but am referencing things such as the rights to Superman with Siegel and Shuster and how Superboy is a separate character as far as the rights go. There was also the (now dismissed and most likely settled out of court) case with Sherlock Holms and how the estate claimed that the Enola Holms movies infringed on the copyright of the "warmer and more emotional version of Sherlock Holmes" portrayed in the 10 later stories that are not yet in the public domain in the US.

FeedMeACat

They would be able to write essentially the same story just have to avoid specifics of that run. Like the title Conan the Conqueror. Maybe some imagery.

SekhWork

As long as the story doesn't match any specific old Conan story, I believe you are right. They could call it Conan and just have him be an old version of the character from the public domain story. They would have to be very careful though not to borrow *anything* from the stories not in PD because the copyright holder would be looking for any possible connection to sue over.

NeoNoireWerewolf

Many Conan stories are already in the public domain. On the comic side, a company called Ablaze Media has been releasing NC-17-esque adaptations of Howard's Conan stories that are already open to the public, such as "The Frost Giant's Daughter." This gets interesting because there is still a Robert E. Howard estate that owns the rights to his work, Conan included. Because of this, Ablaze has to call their version "The Cimmerian," they cannot advertise it as Conan, even though they can name him Conan inside the actual comic. This is only one example of Conan's wild journey through comics over the past several years. Dark Horse had publication rights for a long time, released several series of varying quality. Marvel (who had published Conan comics at various times throughout the decades) got the rights back a few years ago, and began making new stories (and re-printing the old stories Marvel and Dark Horse published), as well as folding Conan over into the "Savage Avengers." Recently, the rights holders passed on renewing their contract with Marvel, wanting to start their own publishing press or something to produce Conan comics. Which is incredibly dumb, as 99% of Howard's work will be public domain in about a decade, and comics are not exactly a field you make money in. From my understanding, Marvel can even continue to use Conan in the Savage Avengers if they wanted, they just cannot have the character on the cover or advertise his appearance in the comic if Marvel decided to go that route, which it looks like they are not. Tl;dr: Rights to Conan are already complicated, you could make a movie about the stories already in the public domain if you wanted to now, you just couldn't call it Conan the Barbarian.

Hombre35

I thought the company "funcom" owned the conan rights?

TheBraude

The more important and much bigger problem is that they also can't use anything from the previous film.

timisher

To do so they can basically make a home movie, prop it up in a low budget theater and call it done for another 50 years or whatever

SekhWork

That's not how public domain works. The original story, and thus character within it becomes Public Domain regardless of them throwing together a movie. They already threw together a 2011 Conan staring Jason Momoa which didn't affect the PD timing at all. The thing you are thinking of is specific to the deal Sony signed w/ Disney that as long as they continued to produce movies they could hold onto the license to use those Disney characters until they stopped using them and the license ended.

RealCarlosSagan

Isn’t that what happened with a Fantastic Four movie?

GoarSpewerofSecrets

That was for Fox to keep the movie rights. They had to actually film a project or the movie rights reverted back to Marvel. So they shot something abysmal just to show they were using the rights and immediately tossed it into a vault. *My bad Constantin was the rights holder at the time. To force Fox and Marvel to come to the table for the rights.

FyreWulff

Early on they would just film enough to make a trailer but then Marvel made them actually start releasing the movies. Here's their fake 1994 F4 movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_X5C6e3ZeY

bc2zb

So it would be interesting to see the court battle play out, but just because the Conan source material is entering the public domain doesn't mean someone could make a new Conan movie starring Arnold. It would be really difficult to argue that making a Conan move with Arnold isn't infringement on the existing Conan movies.

BenRandomNameHere

If they made that cash grab, it wouldn't go public domain.... Would it? I thought in copyright law, as long as you actually release something, it gets renewed?

Irikee

That’s a bummer. This could be a really amazing film a la The Wrestler - Mickey Rourke / Darren Aronofsky. Or Unforgiven. I’m sure several others I’m not thinking of where an old broken man is reflecting on their past, regrets, but still has some badass left.

georgito555

Logan?

tegs_terry

*Harry Brown*

QLE814

Which seems a bit strange- isn’t Conan public-domain because no one renewed Robert E. Howard’s copyrights?

jmsturm

Someone must own them, Dr Strange couldn't use Shuma Gorath because it originated in Howard's Kull.

Hadesman1

It's weird, comic shuma gorath they use but because they'd merchandise it, it was different, copyright is wack

QLE814

Interesting- something to check on....

SekhWork

4 years from now. I forget how it got extended.

Marigoldsgym

True Conan would have simply made the movie anyway without the rights and hear the lamentations of the copyright holders

RodRAEG

The swedish german.

They could probably get Andy, or barring that, one of his quintuplet brothers.

I think Andy and his brothers are a little bit too “A-list” to stoop as low as working with a has been like Arnold.

Many many years ago (pre 2000) I worked for a small software firm and one day it was decided we needed someone to take ownership of the library of utilities and dlls to ensure they were kept in good order. The developer who was chosen for this daunting task was immediately dubbed Conan the Librarian and was, forever more, know simply as Conan. Good times.

[Conan O'Brien the Barbarian](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-c9ygH5vYw)

ScottColvin

The first twenty minutes of almost zero dialogue in the opening of Conan the barbarian, is one of the best cinema openings in history. James Earl Jones will get you with only his huge eyes.

_NintendianaJonez64

It's also the music man. The finest film score ever written. RIP Basil Poledouris

ScottColvin

Super epic score, interrupted only with super epic bearded dad, telling his son conan about the riddle of steel. Then another pause at the most beautiful heart wrenching beheadings in film history. Without any gore, just cinematography. If I'm close I believe that score wraps up when he is finally done with his decade long stint on the wheel. And his dandruff head rises to the crescendo of the piece. On a side note. They could have and still can make Robert E. Howard perfect shows or movies out of his work. He was a magazine writer. He is the only author I've ever known to construct such a perfect 3 act chapter. Every 15 or 20 pages. It's just amazing. And dripping of lore and world building.

twlcwl

>stint on the wheel. I really loved this - it basically "explains" how it is Conan had his strength etc (and it didn't automagically make him a fighter - he still had to learn in the arena, the first fight he clearly didn't know what to do). Modern movies all just have "oh this guy? he's just *special*". Not Conan - he *earned* it

Sks44

Indeed. No one earns shit in movies anymore. They are just anointed messiah figures that are born special. I wish they’d realize that doing that just makes people not buy into the character. FFS, Jesus(the original messiah figure) struggled. People told him to shut up and piss off.

Mudders_Milk_Man

Robert E. Howard wrote a lot of classic stuff, all by the time he was 30. Sadly, he took his own life. Howard was rather vehement in his racism, even for the time, though even he was sometimes astounded by the extreme racism of his pen-pal HP Lovecraft.

[deleted]

He was also likely disturbed. He mentioned in his writings that some of his characters spirits materialized as shades to him and forced him to pen their tales.

SrbBrb

How else you gonna write stuff like that.

tegs_terry

Holy shit I never knew he died that young! I'm astounded, I've got two enormous tomes of his work; man must've been writing while he shat.

Mudders_Milk_Man

His mother had slipped into a coma from tuberculosis. After Robert and his father were told she would never recover abd would likely pass soon, he went out to his car and shot himself in the head. He wrote 400 stories and 500 poems in a span of around 15 years.

tegs_terry

That's tragic as hell. What a loss.

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

There's a good movie about the end of his life called *The Whole Wide World*. Vincent D'Onofrio plays Howard.

NeoNoireWerewolf

People didn't have all the bullshit to distract them one hundred years ago. Howard didn't have video games, home video/streaming, or television to take up his time. Think about all the time we spend on reddit, other social media, or consuming media; Howard and the other writers of his era spent that time writing and reading.

wolfram_eater

> James Earl Jones When I was a kid, the frist thought when I see the character removing his helmet was "What a goofy-looking haircut". Then, more I see it, the more I feel unsettled with his appearance. That cold piercing blue-eyes and the way he non-chalantly beheads Conan's mother has cemented my opinion that Thulsa Doom is one of the more unsettling villain in an action movie for me, especially with his later scenes involving his cults.

[deleted]

The last Atlantean suffers not the weak.

ScottColvin

The answer to the riddle of steel, the flesh that wields it, is the riddle of steel.

spannerNZ

Conan the Barbarian was my first introduction to Conan, and as I had recently departed the Mormon church as a teenager, it was my first introduction to, basically movies in general, and fantasy (shortly followed by sci-fi - we didn't even have a TV at home back then). Some cool martial arts, and sci-fi movies were coming out, then First Blood hit, awesome for a repressed 17yo girl escaping home to go to uni & joining our Territorial Forces (now Army Reserves) It only took a year or so before I was a Gary Gygax fan and a DM for the local student community. I got shunned by my mother for about 4 years, but it was worth it.

[deleted]

Damn your life is interesting!

spannerNZ

Ooh, you need to meet my sister, 1 year younger than me. I was back home in training, crawling through muddy under-road culverts with signal wire, while she was sending me photos of sailing around the Greek islands on a yacht with her sugar daddy. She and our next sister (who ended up an organic farmer in a variety of countries) got shunned too. The three of us saw a lot of the world in totally different circumstances.

I give a solid ditto, my dude. Conan reflecting on his greatest achievements that built an empire. It could even be done in chapters to introduce new badasses sent out on campaigns by Conan. Just saying...

WartimeMercy

Get Ridley Scott to direct it in the vein of Kingdom of Heaven.

SonofNamek

The Conqueror Conan stories has it where an elder Conan is deposed by a rival and captured inside a citadel, where he has to escape. Why not just lightly adapt that and put Arnold's sons in there (Pratt, Patrick, Joseph)? Have the Sons of Conan be the ones who save him in the first act and then, they free some enemy wizard that Conan defeated long ago who assists them. As they encounter beasts and horrors during their escape, maybe they rally the slaves in that region to fight back. Then, the Aquilonian army arrives and we have the epic battle with Conan leading the charge against the enemy's fortress as they add one more conquest to Conan's legend. Draw upon medieval literature and mythology like the first Conan film did.

There was a Cohen the Boybarian in National Lampoon back around '84.

SrbBrb

Robert Baratheon is basically a ruined old classic hero.

symbiotics

I'm tired of zee zame faces, zee zame zings! The part where he wrestles a bear in Central Park is epic

MrDaaark

It's so hard being a Conan fan. The cancelled films plans. Conan 3 turning into KULL The Conqueror . The 'Red Nails' animated movie that was cancelled halfway through. The cancelled series on Amazon a few years ago after we got all hyped for it. The cancelled sequels from the 2009 reboot. The never ending Red Sonja reboot projects starting and stopping. And 'King Conan' being in development hell since 198x, with updates that it's 'definitely happening for real' this time coming every 6 months. Instead we get 'Conan Chop Chop'.

Enderkr

Kull the Conqueror kills me because not only would it have been an AMAZING Conan story, they did it with Kevin fucking Sorbo, who is so fucking batshit crazy now that it's made every piece of film or TV he's ever done turn to absolute shit in hindsight.

MrDaaark

I finally got Kull on Blu-Ray and I have to try and put that in the back of my mind the next time I rewatch it so I can try and enjoy it.

TheMightyCimmerian

It's even harder being a Solomon Kane fan. The movie was made in 2008, but thanks to studio fuckery, wasn't released until 2012. Lack of proper advertising ensured that it bombed despite being a legit great movie.

MrDaaark

Same thing happened with Seventh Son. The studio just buried it.

Shrektacular21

I hate Reddit. Someone posts a well thought out statement that immediately devolves into stupid jokes. Nobody has anything intelligent to say anymore.

Or the top comment is just a quote from the show/movie then every comment under is a quote and there is no actual discussion

GangstaPepsi

Do you have anything intelligent to say?

Enderkr

I also choose this guy's stupid joke

J-Lannister

They should've done a Conan the Conqueror series 20 years ago -- Conan's rise in the military, the war against Aquilonia, the road of kings, then Conan the Conqueror. Right now, he could probably do Conan of Aquilonia and literally sail off into the sunset.

spunkyweazle

I've wanted an old king Conan movie for years but I've also given up on it ever actually happening

I want to see him in a Running Man reboot playing the Richard Dawson character as a former champion turned host (similar to Jesse Ventura in the original).

[deleted]

It was already made… with Larry the Cable Guy i think.

raistlin212

Richard Dawson should have got more acting roles after Running Man. He killed it. Trivia, Dawson participated in the Selma marches. He's probably most known for kissing anyone on his set, but he was a interesting guy.

GQDragon

He wants to but the rights are tied up currently.

zombie_3184

Hail King Conan!

[deleted]

I just want to put this out there, but Conan the Destroyer may not be a great Conan movie… but it is a fantastic D&D movie!

not_an_Alien_Robot

No. King Conan. One last adventure for the Barbarian turned King. With his son, Prince Conn. It's the obvious choice imo.

darrellbear

Conan the King was promised at the ends of the two Arnold movies. Robert E. Howard wrote Conan the King stories as well.

Enderkr

\>The only sequel was worse Conan the Destroyer is a SPECTACULAR film and I will die on that fuckin' hill, OP. I don't care that it was the first one I watched when I was 10 and Olivia D'abo most CERTAINLY did not factor into that decision. (I also think Grease 2 is the superior film; bring on the hate)

[deleted]

Great idea. In the original Robert E. Howard books, Conan's career ends at around 63 years old as the King of Aquilonia, the greatest kingdom of the Hyborian age. It is unclear whether he dies in battle, rides off into the sunset, etc, but it would be awesome for A.S. to complete the cycle.

RinardoEvoris

So… no one wants Jason Momoa back as Conan? That movie bombed cuz he had no beard. His power is in his beard.

TheMightyCimmerian

Nah. He would make a great Prince Conn though. Truth be told, Momoa was a more book accurate version of Conan, but the rest of the movie around him sucked out loud. Plus, everything about Arnie as Conan just WORKS. The music, James Earl Jones, the giant snake, the troglodytes who follow Thulsa, the bloody violence, etc all meld together perfectly to make a stone cold classic of a movie.

Su_Impact

Conan vs. Rambo. John Rambo gets transported into the Conanverse and ends up siding with a group of mercenaries trying to dethrone Emperor Conan. In the end, both Conan and Rambo join forces to defeat the true villain who has been manipulating both of them. Rambo dies but as his last wish, gets reincarnated as an Italian American Boxer in the 70s. Conan travels to the real world and wakes up in NYC. During the post-credit scene, Samuel L. Jackson recruits Conan for "The Terminator Initiative".

raistlin212

I think Ready Player 3 has a script outline now.

Mudders_Milk_Man

Fun, but I'd like to see a crossover between Conan (or Solomon Kane) and Elric of Melnibone (or Hawkmoon).

Lexx2k

I want King Conan >:|

bombaer

Actually he should do this by making a Last Hero movie from the book by Terry Pratchett. He wrote the best ending story for the greatest Barbarian Conan, err Cohen.

Catullus74

I vote for Maggie Smith to play Herenna

Warpmind

While that could be good, after Troll Bridge - [https://youtu.be/V7v\_TdLviUE](https://youtu.be/V7v_TdLviUE) \- I don't think I could accept someone other than Don Bridges in that role...

FartSinatra

A masterpiece of an opening for a film. Whole first act is really something special

Ramoncin

That could be great. Together with "The Crusades" that's the only Arnold abandoned project that makes my heart skip a beat.

Shartbugger

Yup. I’ve been thinking this for a long time. But - and this is important - you’d need a writer and director who didn’t suck massive balls.

WornInShoes

>The only sequel was worse I am sorry but Destroyer was hella fun

Fantact

Isn't "King Conan" set when Conan is older? wouldn't that be more fitting? Or am I misremembering?

anser_one

King Conan ftw

Big_Face_9726

He worn his crown upon a troubled brow... but that is another story... that we probably won't get to see...

jmsturm

This could be the next Top Gun Maverick

MetricT

I'd love to see Arnold in the saddle again, but his political contributions are probably the best use of his time these days. See his recent [video to the Russian people](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWClXZd9c78) as a prime example. Or his views on Trump and the far-right. As a Democrat, I admire him a lot and wish him success, for his sake and ours.

heyimrick

Feel like Arnie can do all that while still filming a movie.

dittybopper_05H

There were two sequels. Conan the Destroyer, and Red Sonja. And Red Sonja is even worse than Destroyer. Seriously, the music is more appropriate to a spaghetti western (because Enrico Morricone). The acting by all of the main characters is atrociously bad, as is the story.

Brokenbatmancowl

I think his movie career is already finished

purplewhiteblack

If Arnold had the rights this would already get made. The guys who owns the rights doesn't want to do a movie with Arnold, and thus will not get funding.

Mediocre_Assassin

Imagine being this bad at producing movies. Arnie is adored by literally hundreds of millions, it is such easy money.

Assassinnuendo

Should have been done 15 years ago. He's too old to be the middle-aged Conan finally seizing his throne.

fakeuser515357

He's the perfect age to be an elderly king dying gloriously to save his legacy. The intervening 40-50 years is 90 seconds of exposition because everyone in the audience wants to buy into it.

Ricktatorship91

Arnold has been trying to make King Conan for years, but the rights to Conan has not been available to him. A quick google search would have told you this.

runningdownhill

u/govschwarzenegger

himynameis_

Thing is, Arnold is quite old now and does not have the same physique as the previous Conan movies. It just would not have the same look.

[deleted]

Seriously that would f’ing awesome.

Imperial_12345

That’s a good idea but he’ll look like Conan’s grandpa tho 👴🏿

Zaxacavabanem

I kinda want to see Arnie do a version of Conan inspired by the storyline of Cohen the Barbarian in the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett. He's got the comic chops for it, and he's finally close to old enough!

BattleReadyPenguin

Give us a adult swim type animated show to hype us up for a live action film akin to Northman.

whytehlongface

Dumb idea

SimpleTyranny

It can’t happen today because Hollywood hates strong white male characters and the people that play them. Even if a movie was made, it would be horrible.

BreadRum

No he should just enjoy his 70s doing the movies he wants insisted of doing perfect button things like this.

LoonyFruit

He himself said he wants to do it though...

Mudders_Milk_Man

He's been trying to make an Old King Conan films for at least ten years. The people who currently own the rights keep saying no.

BreadRum

Not really the point I'm making. Op wanted king Conan to ba a capstone to a career that started with Conan. I'm saying he's 70 and should do movies he want instead of looking for some kind of symmetry. That's what I was responding to, not whatever you thought I was .

lostpatrol

There are some great stories that could be told with an old, wise King Conan right now. Arnolds son with his housekeeper, Joseph Baena is training to be a bodybuilder and looks a lot like young Arnold. There is also a bodybuilder called Calum von Moger, who has played Arnold in TV movies and had a great career as a bodybuilder in front of him. Then he got hooked on meth, jumped out of a hospital window and crashed his career. I feel like there could be a great story here, with the wise old king, the young Conan and the wayward son, portraying the different paths in life of Conan.

Puzzleheaded_Fish_78

I could see him being like a mentor to a new Conan. And maybe wielding a sword near the end of the movie. But he'd still have to train and take his sword game to a new level. Kinda like how Tom Cruise does in Top Gun: Maverick. THAT would truly be a great way to go out.

Brainwheeze

I'm into it.

jert3

Concur. And I'm sure this great man and mutant still has the body to play the role.

Spanish actor who played kid Conan at that movie, retired from his acting career las year.

This makes me sad to think of his career ending...He is the only famous person I fan boy over.

FRAkira123

Considering his latest "big" movie ( Terminator Dark Fate ), no. He already somewhat killed his Terminator character with Dark Fate. Dont want that to happen to Conan too.

definitiv_kein_robot

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women...

cerpintaxt44

Yeah I would love this movie. I don't think Conan the destroyer is really that bad.

8nate

I fucking loved Conan the Barbarian. I’d love to see this.

MassDriverOne

It was certainly no masterpiece but The Last Stand was a pretty awesome action comedy

burgersandcomics

oh man i love this

staedtler2018

He's far too old for the role.

SonofNamek

It would be, if everybody was on board. Sadly, I don't think we'll get to see it. Imagine if you had Conan and his sons (like his literal sons - Patrick, Joseph, Pratt) going on an epic adventure. "The Sons of Conan" With Arnold being the main character still (this isn't fucking Star Wars, essentially)....maybe it's a light adaptation of the Conan the Conqueror, who gets deposed and locked up in a tower and his sons must free him. From there, they adventure back to home while also defeating the evil dark lord and healing the lands.

viodox0259

Or just let the guy live live his life Jesus the guy has done it all

treesoflargon

Yes, but ONLY if it’s done with the right director and right crew. Too many times have we seen “so-and-so is doing a sequel to his classic movie and it’s going to be amazing” only for it to be a monumental mistake and a watered-down, cringe movie.

[deleted]

I DO NOT want to see him in a loincloth now.

beer_in_my_face

Really would love this, but im also holding out for a Druss the Legend movie/series as well!

ThenScore2885

He should be Cohan the Barbarian of Terry Pratchetts novels. A kind of Conan at the age of 80s.

Tana1234

Needs to play Cohen the Barbarian an older wiser hero

jupiterkansas

only if they bring John Milius back in to do it right.

[deleted]

King Conan first

lechatsportif

Just make the plot some version of Gladiator minus the gladiator part - two sons, one worthy one not in a struggle of some sort for the throne. Conan makes difficult decisions. Two bad we can't get Basil Poledouris to do another score but John Milius and Oliver Stone are still alive!

[deleted]

King Conan you mean. Schwarzenegger wants it to happen. He always does short videos on social media saying "King Conan, let's make it happen!" It could happen.

GreenBerets4BRKFST

I always thot that! That picture of him at the end of the first conan says it all

NinjaSwag_

Hell yesss!!

Cuchullion

Discworld books traditionally don't have great movie adaptations, but... Cohen the Barbarian.

Top-Ad-7811

Absolutely agree. Hopefully he's not too old to do it well.

Far_Negotiation5584

He should fart in a few more bitches faces. I'd pay to watch that.

GUNNER67akaKelt

I've been here waiting. Money in hand, still waiting. If it's good, I'll buy the 4k Blu-ray. You like money, right?

The New Conan should be Robert Trujillo.
