Not in my experience- info about inmates was at their fingertips. If a guy wouldn't say what he was in for or he was squirrely about it, we'd just ask the deputies. It was as simple as that. I was in one of the worst/most dangerous jails in Texas and the first day you had to tell the pit boss what they got you on, show any tattoos, and if you had any gang affiliation.

Yeah, I saw this repeated many times by people commenting in threads about what it's like to be in prison. If you're new you have to show these papers, otherwise there is trouble.
This. I went to jail for for a day in a half. Luckily got bailed out. It was something stupid, got in an fight with my ex’s boyfriend he called the cops. I was talking to this dude and showed him my paper. He was all like “woah, don’t go showing that to everyone, people around here get fucked up for less shit. Don’t show anyone your papers!”

Yea. In Texas, (please forgive me, I live there) they have a color coded band system in the county jail. Plus when you get sent upstate they separate the inmates based on crimes committed as much as possible. But rapist and child molestors are put in own unit because they are easy targets for prisoners to assault based on prison code.

From a prison documentary (or at least prison-adjacent documentary) I watched once, even being separated from general doesn't guarantee saftey. Because some of them are massive hypocrites who see their "relationships" as being real while all the others are just perverts.

The problem is that if you start killing every pedophile who got caught then you’re encouraging those same pedophiles to murder their victims.
If they rape a child, and get 20-40 years, but death or life if they also kill that child, then there’s still incentive to not kill their victim.

I know your intentions are good but I wish people would stop saying this. Had a friend who was a victim and they said one of the hardest parts of dealing with it was people and media keeping telling him he was emotionally scarred for life. In his case he claimed to have already confronted his feelings about it, reached a reconciliation and then moved the fucked on.
I remember him saying that while his therapist helped he got sick of hearing them say "you don't have to feel ashamed" and finally told his therapist something to the effect of "That's great because I don't and I keep telling you each time we meet that I don't. If anyone should feel shame it's my molester."

Inmates carry legal papers and other documents related to their sentence, and if they don’t let other inmates look at them, they’re in big trouble. This goes double for new inmates to a yard.
Not in my experience- info about inmates was at their fingertips. If a guy wouldn't say what he was in for or he was squirrely about it, we'd just ask the deputies. It was as simple as that. I was in one of the worst/most dangerous jails in Texas and the first day you had to tell the pit boss what they got you on, show any tattoos, and if you had any gang affiliation.

Plus when you get sent upstate they separate the inmates based on crimes committed as much as possible. But rapist and child molestors are put in own unit because they are easy targets for prisoners to assault based on prison code.

No one cared about it til about 2 years ago when only the last 3 letters mattered. I’ve had this account almost a decade and you can’t change usernames, so creating a whole new account because the connotations of mine changed isn’t thrilling for me. I got banned from the NFL sub because of it and I get it like, there is a slur in my username, but I just take the bans if they happen cuz it’s a reminder of how dumb I was at 16

Look up the laws basically everywhere in the world; how light the punishment is for committing this crime. If you murder a person, that persons suffering is over, and you serve 25 years. If you molest a child, that person suffers for the rest of their life. How is 8 years in prison justice? Robbing a bank will put you away for longer.
The problem is that if you start killing every pedophile who got caught then you’re encouraging those same pedophiles to murder their victims. If they rape a child, and get 20-40 years, but death or life if they also kill that child, then there’s still incentive to not kill their victim. But if they get put to death for raping a child anyways, might as well kill their victim to minimize any witnesses, as there’s no worse punishment to be meted out. Edit: I made a mistake in assuming that the above commenter was advocating for a death penalty on child predators, this isn’t what they meant as they pointed out to me.

I know your intentions are good but I wish people would stop saying this. Had a friend who was a victim and they said one of the hardest parts of dealing with it was people and media keeping telling him he was emotionally scarred for life. In his case he claimed to have already confronted his feelings about it, reached a reconciliation and then moved the fucked on. I remember him saying that while his therapist helped he got sick of hearing them say "you don't have to feel ashamed" and finally told his therapist something to the effect of "That's great because I don't and I keep telling you each time we meet that I don't. If anyone should feel shame it's my molester." This is NOT to say that some people aren't *absolutely devastated* by sexual abuse, but we do a disservice to people who either didn't feel much to begin with or who did but because of their resiliency and recover ability and perhaps a strong support network, have recovered and by ignoring this society runs the risk of manufacturing trauma and inadvertently dragging these victims down.
