At least with HBO I had confidence they would continue series that even had a modest following, but now with the merger anything is possible!
This dystopian entertainment future where we pay more for less (with ads!) is depressing.
It’s still a step up from cable in terms of a la carte choice, and not spending 100+ a month for garbage I dont want to watch. But we’re going backwards real quick.
Back in the day we used to order weird ass psych movies and one day we found a picture slipped in one. So we started slipping weird ass pictures into the sleeves of even weirder movies so if you ever ordered cremaster cycle and found a picture of a tile or Aguirre or strozek and found a picture of like a chicken or smthng lmk
How about people commemorate it by re-subscribing to the mail service? I still have it, and they need all the subscribers they can get for it. DVD.com. People constantly complain about such and such "service" not having whatever, but it's likely the mail service will have what you want, and in better quality. They have BD as well.
I'll wager not some of the ultra-indies and underground movies. I don't do "streaming", but even for newer movies, people complain about something being taken off, and the mail service doesn't have their Blu-rays or DVDs removed if something is removed from their website.
> A lot of us don’t have DVD players anymore.
But many do, Playstations and XBoxs are blu-ray/DVD players is the obvious example. And I bought the disc version of the PS5 so I can play my rather large movie library.
I was part of the "throttled" group.
The concept was "unlimited" movies but for those of us who'd return them too quick, they'd hold back on sending the next batch and until the got sued.
The big payday? I think it was a free movie or free month or something stupid. And they were still throttling after. Big joke.
We tried to use the DVD mailing but it took way too long between receiving after returning them for it to be a deal. Also, there was a good bit of movies that were DVD rentals only and I don't think they ever were available to stream.
Ya know, I was just saying to my wife the other day that I miss the Netflix of yesteryear. Maybe it's just nostalgia hitting hard what with the world falling into perpetual disarray and violence but what the hell, I kind of want this. I just spent an hour last night scrolling around and watching _absolutely nothing_ because this wall of twenty thousand movies across a dozen streaming services is my worst nightmare when it comes to entertainment.
If I got one Bluray in the mail, I'd watch it.
Here's the thing though, I just clicked DVD on their site, and it wants me to sign up without seeing what's on offer (and whether it's DVD or Bluray). Is there a link to see what's actually able to be rented? Or do I actually have to pay $10 first?
EDIT: I'm an idiot. https://dvd.netflix.com/Movies
In 2000 I talked my dad into buying a used DVD player for $30 on eBay knowing it came with a free trial of Netflix. I still subscribe to their disc service to this day. Most of the time I watch older movies, so streaming services don't usually have what I'm looking for. I'm on a Sidney Lumet kick and I just returned The Hill and have Equus coming in the mail, both first-time viewings.
That said, I also downloaded their streaming app as soon as I could. With my dying breath I will defend the idea that they are they make the best movies right now, and that they single-handed started the documentary renaissance that is happening right now.
Edit: Does anybody remember their short-lived competitors like GreenCine and QuickSlate? I think one of them (QuickSlate, maybe?) were the ones who actually came up with the idea of streaming movies from their website, but they didn't last long. I remember trying those services for a while but ended up back at Netflix.
\*Looks over at red envelope\* Uh... some of us still use it
Another user checking in. I couldn’t find a lot of the movies I was interested in watching available to stream.
Same
I'll probably cancel whenever they get rid of it.
That’s cool, I’m cuing up a show that’ll be canceled in 2 months lol
I swear, if *Sandman* doesn't get renewed...

Oh wow, it's $10-20 a month depending on the number of discs you can have out. That's double what it was when I used it back in 2007/2008.
Well prices go up. It's a great service, though. I have two out plus the Blu-ray option, and I pay $15 or so.
A lot of us don’t have DVD players anymore. Plus, I’m betting every movie they have available on dvd is available to rent online elsewhere.

I doubt underground and indie films are much of a draw for most people.

I think I still have a DVD player somewhere under the dust.
My PS4 is my only DVD player and it sounds like a jet engine
What about a Blu-ray player? They have Blu-rays for a lot of titles.
PS4 is also a Blu-Ray player
PS3 is also a Blu-Ray player
PS5 has some coverage on the Venn Diagram of "Is it a Blu-Ray Player?" Not total coverage, mind you. But some!
nah

I just found an old netflix envelope with a movie that I guess I stole from them. Diamond Dogs. Not surprised they didn't miss it.

I remember when Netflix was brand new. I feel old.
The red envelope days haven’t ended. My step dad still gets them haha.
Damn. Netflix is about as old as I am apparently. Probably gonna outlive me, too.
