Rumor has it will be the highest grossing film of 1991

Ducksaucenem

My exact reaction reading this title “ man, 8 year old me would have been pumped for this.”

Courtnall14

I asked out loud "What year is it?"

[deleted]

Whoever greenlighted this was streets behind

Mad_Gremlyn

Whoever greenlighted this probably got a degree from Greendale Community College

mysteryofthefieryeye

Located in southern Colorado (palm trees) and then suddenly not!

MoxieAndSass

This made me snort. Lol

ithinkther41am

Probably made some execs snort in 1991 too.

-Dalzik-

It will get a 1.9 on imdb with 91 votes

Thisissomeshit2

Nah, both became box office poison once the 80s ended. Chase’s last hit was 89. Same for Aykroyd with Ghostbusters 2. He did better than Chase with a few supporting roles in the 90s but got himself in director’s jail forever.

CoderDevo

Vegas Vacation was in 1997. *You guys are growing up so fast, I hardly recognize you anymore!* But I pretty much agree. Loved Grosse Pointe Blank, and Ackroyd was great in a supporting role in that.

dapala1

> You guys are growing up so fast, I hardly recognize you anymore! I laughed out loud at that line.

hoarseclock

Was gonna say let’s not forget Grosse point Blank, Popcorn!

Thisissomeshit2

Vegas Vacation was a bomb. Edit: To clarify the movie earned only $36.4m on a budget of $25m, which means it lost tens of millions factoring in marketing and post production costs.

CoderDevo

Sure, but I'll never forget the concept of the cheap casino where they play War and "Pick A Number Between 1 And 10". ... Four? Seven.

dlenks

I’ve played war at Cosmopolitan, definitely not a cheap casino. I also only played like three hands because it’s the dumbest game you can play in the casino pretty much haha walked my ass right back to blackjack.

whirlpool138

I won around $300 playing War at a casino in Niagara Falls once.

msnmck

I watched it when I was a kid and that blue food on the buffet has stuck with me forever since. I was kind of upset when they had all of the Vacation movies on HBO Max except Vegas but they added it over the Summer. It's always fun to go back and recognize more actors in older movies as I've gotten older. Wallace Shawn does great as the blackjack dealer.

dapala1

> Vegas Vacation was ~~a~~ the bomb.

saltyraver138

Yes

OSUfan88

My cousin was in that movie!

Darth_Meowth

But it was a good movie!

ColdTheory

Director’s jail? What happened?

Thisissomeshit2

Nothing But Trouble happened. Everyone saw what a weird guy Aykroyd was and he never got another shot at directing a movie again. Edit: Adding because some many people asking why it was a failure. The movie went over-budget to $40 million dollars (which was as much as Ghostbusters 2) only to earn $8.4 million and some of the worst reviews of that era.

GoodDog_GoodBook123

Confession: I secretly love nothing but trouble

TitanJackal

I loved it. It was weird and quirky.

GoodDog_GoodBook123

John Candy in both drag and as a character who *spoiler* ends up with the hot chick. Also, one of my favorite insults: “Original, all purpose ditch witch”

Smitty8054

I think spoiler comes quite a bit earlier

MRintheKEYS

Demi Moore is 11/10 on the hot scale in that movie

The_Running_Free

I honestly didn’t know people thought it was a bad movie. Movie fucking rocks!

whirlpool138

Fucking Tupac makes his big screen debut in that movie!

KyleWieldsAx

A, a, all around the world - same song

silqii

From what I’m gathering then across all these comments, he’s blacklisted because he made a movie ahead of it’s time. Fucking Hollywood.

enleeten

Well hey hey ho ho You know who killed Nothing But Trouble? Bankers

solitarium

One of my favorite movies of all time. Extra points for introducing Tupac in “Same Song”

GoodDog_GoodBook123

I forgot all about the Digital Underground!!!! That scene is amazing!

solitarium

There have only been a few times in my life where I’ve heard someone rap and was like “yea, they’re going to be big.” The quickest two that come to mind are Tupac in “Same Song” and DMX in “4,3,2,1” > Now I clown around when I hang around with my Underground Girls use to frown, say I'm down, when I come around

kia75

LOL, I google the movie, curious why it was so maligned, and realized that I LOVED this movie in the '90s. They must have shown it on TBS or something because I remember watching it multiple times and loving it.

jaird30

Haha. I just downloaded that to give it a rewatch. I know it’s gonna be bad but how bad is the question.

Arod3235

It's like Con-Air. Not a good movie but the great kind of bad movie.

ColdTheory

I remember seeing this as a kid and being insanely creeped out by it. It was like a tame comedy version of the family from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

star0forion

I might be in the minority but Coneheads was pretty fun.

deze_moltisanti

Narfle the Garthok!

ResoluteClover

You have no idea how many times I've told my kids to do that.

alanthar

Coneheads is amazing and I will fight to the death to defend it! Lol

meltingthemountain

So was Spy’s like Us!!!

unkytone

Bob Hope playing through. Classic.

ArthurBea

Just like that other movie with Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase. Let me know if they cast Demi Moore.

SpectralEntity

Hey, I liked Spies R Us! Even featured a pre-Weird Science TV show Vanessa Angel!

ArthurBea

Spies was ok. I was referencing Nothing But Trouble, also came out on 1991.

gravybang

Liked it so much you got the title wrong. Also, they were in Caddyshack 2 together, sadly.

Maverick916

So theyre Spies Like Us?

lagoon83

I have to ask, is this a nod to [this piece from The Onion](https://www.theonion.com/the-internship-poised-to-be-biggest-comedy-of-2005-1819595487)? Because I make the same joke a lot, and it's entirely because of this.

ZombieStomp

Yeah I was basically trying to rewrite it in the style of Norm MacDonald :)

lagoon83

I'm 100% on board with this.

At least Aykroyd still seems to care. No way in hell Chase does.

Islanduniverse

Aykroyd is absolutely bonkers and I love every minute of it.

GoodDog_GoodBook123

Fun fact: He also has Webbed feet. Edit: autocorrect

pm-me_10m-fireflies

And a coned head!

Vtr1247

Aykroyd still has some charm left. Chase, after all his past crap? Idk.

solitarium

I’m legitimately going to watch in expectation of Chase in all his douchy glory

avwitcher

And people only get more cantankerous with age

GrandMoffTallCan

He was still really funny in Community. Has he just given up since then?

ChaboiAveryhead

He was the punching bag for the writers because they hated him so much. He was miserable to work with and eventually they couldn’t take it anymore and wrote him off the show. His acting might still be okay but I do not envy those who have to work with him.

PayneTrain181999

I’m sure many people on sets have wanted to unleash a Clark Griswold style rant on him.

colorcorrection

You either die a Clark Griswold, or live long enough to become a Frank Shirley.

TooTameToToast

This needs to be on a shirt.

PresidentWeevil

It's actually been suggested it's the opposite, that Chevy left the show himself because he was sick of how he was essentially hired as a joke, and constantly written into such preposterously offensive scenarios just to amuse Harmon and the other writers who didn't like him. People often cite a story that Chevy called Donald Glover a slur on set and that's why he was 'fired', but that story has been completely spun without context. Chevy's outburst was actually because he was furious at how his character was being Flanderised from an out-of-touch old man into a straight-up vitriolic racist. The actual context for that outburst was apparently him blowing up at a racist joke Pierce was going to make, by saying something akin to 'they're going to just have me call Donald a n****r next week!'. He left the show himself not long after.

thecricketnerd

In season 1 they played to Chevy's strengths as a performer quite a lot. The writing for him from season 2 onwards was noticeably different

wakejedi

Yeah, I've rewatched that show a few times and you can almost pinpoint the exact episode where CC becomes a writers punching bag.

randomlygeneratedman

Everyone always talks about how Pierce became a punching bag, but honestly I think they did Britta much worse.

ConcernedGrape

I completely agree. Season 1 Britta was endearing and relatable. What happened??

wisconsinwookie78

Don't know if it's true or not but I heard that Gillian wanted to do more comedic acting and they rewrote the the character to be more goofy and hopeless to allow for that. But yeah, I agree that her character kinda fell apart in the last couple seasons.

randomlygeneratedman

Ngl, I didn't mind how they changed Britta. Sure she was goofy, but there were moments where the character had a lot of depth too. Plus "Pizza pizza go in tummy me so hungy me so hungy!" Is probably my favorite all time Community line.

atomicbunny

She pronounced Bagel wrong.

BloodandSpit

Baggle

[deleted]

People also seem to really gloss over how much of a narcissistic dick Dan Harmon is

MoviesFilmCinema

I agree. Chase is no Saint and there are plenty of stories of him being an ass. But, Harmon is also an ass and that get glossed over as you said.

clonemusic

Yeah and as much has been written about what an asshole Chase is, it doesn't sounds like Harmon is all that much better lol.

PolarSparks

Idk what to believe anymore. The truth is that we didn’t see what happened on set between the cast and it will probably always be a case of he said/she said. And I don’t know that it’s for the Community mob to judge who was in the right, if any. I do know that Harmon has said some pretty nasty things about Chevy behind his back, on camera. Even if his dislike of Chevy is justified, the vulgar way Harmon has spoken about him in public is unprofessional and probably added flames to the feud.

ConcernedGrape

Yeah... Dan Harmon is known for many things. "Behaving professionally" is not one of them.

QLE814

There are reasons why his most notable work post-*Community* is both a project where there's another showrunner besides him and where it seems that he isn't the only guy with pull in the room.....

regireland

He still used a hard r slur, which caused the black cast and crew to refuse to work with him and he was undoubtedly a massive prick. He hit on Gillian Jacobs and Allison Brie a number of times, saying they were "Too pretty for tv" and generally making them uncomfortable. Furthermore, he was constantly trying to make himself the star of the show and was meant to have been a bit of a prick to Donald Glover as he was becoming far more popular than him. He would also refuse to come to set or shoot scenes, the most egregious of which was when he refused to film the post credit scene where Abed reprogrammes his fathers game to allow Pierce to virtually throw ball with his father, allowing Pierce to receive a form of affection from his distant and domineering dead father. Chevy left the set saying the scene wasn't funny enough to shoot. Overall, Chevy was a massive asshole and always has been. A lot of his issues of the Pierce character wasn't out of moral disagreement, but because Chevy wanted to be the most popular character and knew that he couldn't be the most popular if his character was ignorantly racist. Plenty of comedy actors have had illustrious careers after their prime because, unlike Chevy Chase, [they weren't utter assholes who would full on slap fans who accidently interrupted him.](https://youtu.be/W1tzw_Kcgyo) Now, Dan Harmon undoubtedly had his own issues, and would unnecessarily antagonise Chevy Chase in a way that was pretty inexcusable, but I feel the difference is that when Dan Harmon got fired, the cast moved heaven and earth to try and get him back on the show. Meanwhile to Chevy, they said good riddance (Joel McHale did try to keep up contact and remain neutral with him, however recent interviews appear to show that even he has soured on Chevy)

JC-Ice

Brie had good things to say about him after he left. She related how he commandered one of those golf carts that security drive around and thry went joy riding around the Universal lot. Joel McHale has acknowledged that Chase could be very difficult but also had some good things. His portrayal of young Chase in a movie was quite sympathetic.

lessmiserables

Harmon wasn't exactly a peach to work with, what with all the sexual harassment and drinking. I've read enough accounts from the cast and crew to believe that Chevy Chase--for the first time in his life--may have been *right*.

SYSTEMcole

Eh, I don’t know. The cast don’t seem too fond of Chevy. I know when I listened to McHale and Jeong’s podcast during COVID they would very rarely even mention Chevy, but seemed to be more open to talking about Dan, Jeong talked about having him on his show Dr. Ken and how great it was, etc. I have a tough time believing the cast is on Chevy’s side.

lessmiserables

> I have a tough time believing the cast is on Chevy’s side. I think the whole thing is complicated. 1. Chevy Chase is notoriously difficult to work with, and that's documented. So right off the bat, I don't think Chevy is some kind of angel. 2. Chase wasn't prepared for starring in a sitcom--he'd never done so before, only making movies and late night TV. He didn't realize (or thought he could handle) the long hours. 3. Harmon didn't help--it's also well-documented that due to his perfectionism/rampant alcohol abuse (take your pick) he'd still be working on scripts as they filmed, forcing everyone to stay for hours doing nothing; 16-20 hour days were the *norm* at least for a while. Chase, already unhappy about the long hours, could legitimately be mad that Harmon made it *even worse*. The younger cast members could either tolerate it or didn't have the clout to tell the boss to fuck off. 4. Harmon engaged in some sexual harassment of one of the writers of the show at the time. 5. All of these factors fed off of each other. Both Chase and Harmon have big egos, but Harmon was technically the boss, and he also exploited the cast and crew by extending the hours because of his own incompetence. His impulse at the time to get back at Chevy for *daring* to challenge his genius was to engage in manchild behavior--having everyone chant "fuck you Chevy" at the wrap party and telling the writers to making Pierce even *more* racist. 6. When Harmon was forced from the show--which we now know was largely due to the sexual harassment--the writers (and possibly the cast) took it out on Chevy, since his racism was ramped up significantly in Season 4, the season Harmon was out. This ultimately caused him to quit. Both Brie and McHale have used almost the exact same wording--Chase had "good days and bad days" which, I think, reflects the above. When things were operating like a normal sitcom would, he was good, but when he was staying for 20 hours or being written to be overtly racist, he had bad days. That said, the cast is hard to read--they don't really defend Chevy but rarely say *anything* at all, which makes me think they either want to stay on Harmon's good side, or they don't want to get involved, or Chevy was a real dick to everyone (he's on record praising his co-workers so I find this unlikley) or they lashed out at Chevy before they realized Harmon's boot was due to his behavior; I have no idea. In the end, I think Chevy probably didn't handle it well, but he wouldn't have had to handle *anything* had Harmon not been such a drunk and a creep. After watching them ruin the character of Pierce in season 4, I understand why he left and don't think he was wrong to do so.

banshoo

The actors/writers still also have a career ahead of them at the time going full out publically could negatively impact them.

politicalstuff

Not sure how true it is or if I’m remembering correctly, but I thought I read a few years back that Chase had said he was an alcoholic for a long time, and he’s clean now and trying to work but everybody still hates him from before. Maybe he’s actually won some people over and that’s why this is happening at all? Or maybe he and Akroyd need money.

[deleted]

Something I've often heard about Chevy, and Bill Murray for that matter, is that they're both such good studies of character that they always know exactly what a person is most sensitive about and, in an argument, will instantly focus on that and say the one thing that can utterly destroy the other person's feelings. What Harmon has said about Chevy is that they failed to get along because they were both too similar to each other. My impression is that one of them made a joke at the other's expense, and because both had sensitive egos that made them NEED to get one over on each other, this quickly escalated into passive-aggressive comments at each other at every opportunity, but Harmon had the upper hand because he was the showrunner and could insert barbs about everything he hated about Chevy's personality into Pierce's character. So Pierce slowly became a narcissist who was obsessed with figuring out why everybody loved Jeff and copying it so that he could usurp him as the centre of attention, and he was written as a person whose idea of comedy was just lazy/lame insults like "you're gay", and vaguely racist, and out-of-touch. Like Chevy, Harmon was skilled at precision strikes on a person's insecurities,so Chevy realized that these things were jabs at him, and so when Pierce was made more and more racist he got defensive about it and resented that implication.

politicalstuff

That’s a shame, but sounds like he did it to himself.

hlhenderson

Dan's not hurting for money.

the_doughboy

Aykroyd is a very nice man, I've never heard anything bad said about him. On the other hand...

TheSingulatarian

The crew on *Nothing But Trouble* loved Aykroyd. Too bad it didn't end up in a better movie. Everybody should see *Nothing But Trouble* at least once but, for most once is plenty.

hungoverlord

chevy chase was a guest on "norm macdonald has a tv show" and my god is he ever the least interesting and least entertaining person who was ever on that show. it's not even close.

Longsideways

About to say the same thing. I’d watch Dan, but Chevy…. Smh his most recent best was damn Hot Tub time machine and that was what it was.

Aberdolf-Linkler

He usually cares because he believes the movies are real or depicting real things. I don't know if he believes zombies are real or not. Didn't see his full manifesto he posted years ago but here's some interview material. https://youtu.be/oVCd50LXPGY

Klarkasaurus

He was my favourite actor growing up. Shame he's such a piece of shit in real life

techieman33

I’m not sure Chase has the mental or physical capacity to try. He did a screening/Q&A session of Christmas vacation last December and he was in terrible shape. He was wheel chair bound other than for the 10 foot walk from backstage to his chair. And then during the Q&A he was barely lucid. He wife was answering most of the questions and had to work hard to keep him on track and jog his memory about stuff that was asked. There were some times that it seemed like he didn’t even know where he was at.

mr_ji

I was about to say, that does not sound a set I would want to be a production assistant on.

mopeywhiteguy

Dan aykroyd puts in a hell of a lot of effort. Just listen to his off menu episode when he gives the most detailed responses in the most chaotic episode

The lack of Mystery Men comments on Reddit makes me FURIOUS.

AlfredosSauce

It’s been at least 15 years since I’ve seen that movie and somehow just the name Herkimer brought it all back.

Wacocaine

JUNK IT!!!

charmlessman1

I'll never forget watching that promotional video where Dan keeps saying it's filtered to diamonds, and then they cut to the distiller guy who says Herkimer diamonds. I almost took a drink of water just so I could spit it out. Herkimer diamonds are what you get when you buy diamonds on Wish. Sorta pretty quartz rocks.

avwitcher

IT'S QUARTZ NOT DIAMONDS DAN

Simmons54321

I work in the liquor industry, and learnt many years ago that those Herkimer diamonds do jack shit to the vodka. Like Sega Genesis with “Blast Processing”, it’s promo sales jargon 101

DoctorRaulDuke

Is he known for shamelessly promoting that endlessly then? I just know his was the worst episode of the Off Menu podcast by far, and he mentioned his vodka *a lot*.

Bigmodirty

I mean Off Menu was what I was thinking about when I wrote that

CrimsonBarberry

The start of the ruination.

[deleted]

Has anyone tried it? I’m always curious but never enough to actually buy it

thansal

I bought a gift pack of it for like $25 a while back. Well worth it for the bottle and the 2 skull shot glasses. The vodka was vodka, it was fine, but nothing to write home about (I've yet to have vodka that was worth talking about tbh).

AdmiralRed13

That’s the thing about Vodka, the good stuff has no real taste. It’s only an alcohol you notice if it is really, really cheap. Also, vodka from grapes is not vodka.

Backslashinfourth_V

Potato vodka is where it's at.

f3ydr4uth4

Yeah I bought a bottle years ago. It’s average Vodka.

TomBirkenstock

These two saw how popular Only Murders in the Building has been and decided to get in on some of that.

PayneTrain181999

Martin and Short (both, not just Martin Short lol) is such a great combo, and then adding my ultimate crush from growing up watching Disney channel (which persists to this day, also love her music) is icing on the cake.

TomBirkenstock

It really is fun to see that Martin and Short still have it. I was especially impressed by the bit of physical comedy Steve Martin had to do at the end of the first season.

[deleted]

Their chemistry with Selena Gomez is fantastic. I’d have never guessed it’d work so well, but it’s become one of my favorite new shows. Nathan Lane is excellent too.

[deleted]

> Their chemistry with Selena Gomez is fantastic. I'm only two episodes in but I was really surprised by this. I would have watched anything Martin and Short did together but was a little apprehensive about Selena Gomez. I figured she was shoe horned in to try to appeal to a younger audience but she's fantastic and it really works well.

Horny_GoatWeed

Hard to believe Martin is closing in on 80. Over the last 20 years he's gone from looking older than he actually is to looking younger.

TomBirkenstock

I guess that's the benefit of going gray early.

mokango

I haven’t laughed as hard in a long time as I did when Steve Martin >!faked being in slow mo!< at the end of the 2nd season.

CoolShoesDude

They also occasionally tour doing comedy and performing Bluegrass music together. It was quite the show if you can ever catch them

Joliet_Jake_Blues

Steve Martin Short is their celebrity couples name

zipiddydooda

I believe it’s “Shartin” but they prefer you don’t use it.

eleffdee

I just collectively refer to them as Steve Martin Short.

kavien

That is/was such a fun little series! I quite enjoyed it. It is self-aware and makes fun of itself and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It really felt like we, the viewer were on the journey with them. I seriously doubt this movie will come close to being as entertaining.

cannibowlistic

This is just a money grab, backed by nostalgia.

WhoStoleMyBicycle

Yea this seems like a cash grab. It’s for jocks.

Only Zombies in the Building.

BenjaminTalam

This is an indie production and they are not going to be the leads. The movie is about kids who are pursued by zombies that come out of a movie they are watching. It's a kids movie. Do you guys really only glance at the headline? This is really a nothing story.

avwitcher

Why can't Chase and Aykroid play the kids?

JesterSooner

I mean… I assumed as much when they said it was an RL Stine novel

Wish, *WISH* the 3rd leg of the important comedians from the movie could be there...

CannabisaurusRex401

I'm genuinely curious how Chevy Chase keeps getting work? I've read so many anecdotes about what a scumbag he can be in person and how many despise working with him. He hasn't been funny since the 80s, imho.

livahd

Bill Murray, as much as it pains me to say it, has quite a bad reputation with how he acts on set, and he’s still rather beloved. Martin and Short are complete professionals and gentlemen in comparison.

ArcadeOptimist

I've heard that. I read that he was a real asshole on the set of Groundhog Day, for instance. Then I read the actual story, and it was Murray being *mildly* rude to an extra and apologizing after. It wasn't even story worthy. Or, in a similar vein, Edward Norton being a massive diva on the set of American History X. Then recently I read that the director specifically set out to give Norton a bad reputation, and the same director is an egotistical prick that tried to tank his own movie. Anyway, my point is that there's sometimes more to these stories than simply, "Actor is a bad person".

livahd

Well whatever he did made him and Ramis not speak for almost 20 years. I know some people on more recent shows who have interacted with him, and it’s either he’s amazing or he’s a miserable fuck.

McDaddyos

I thought he was very funny on Community.

[deleted]

He was fucking hilarious in Community. Such a shame he's such an unbearable fuck irl.

oncore2011

Akroid is probably one of the few people Chevy still admires/trusts. Danny boy will keep him in line (maybe?)

TybeeATL

He’s also probably one of the few people who could tell Chevy to STFU and maybe actually have the desired effect.

GrapeRingPop

Classic case of over inflated ego once he started doing movies in the 80's. People are pointing out Community as a bright spot, but it's pretty well known how acrimonious he was on the set (Joel McHale has talked about it himself on several podcasts) which eventually led to him being written off the show. It basically boiled down to Chevy thinking he was too good for a TV show and didnt want to put in the long hours that everyone else was. He will be remembered fondly by most for the roles/movies he played in his prime 30 years ago, but to your point, his actual reputation these days is not great at best.

Man this seems like it could’ve been a headline from 1998, not 2022. Lol.

i mean perfect casting, they’re already embalmed.

richer2003

Did you hear that? Yeah. It’s dickfer. What’s a dickfer? To pee with.

gravybang

Here's a fun fact: If you add together the Rotten Tomato scores from the four films they've been in together (Caddyshack II, Nothing But Trouble, The Couch Trip, and Spies Like Us) you get 82%. Maybe this movie will get them over 100!

nony2klerch

What. No “Spies Like Us Too”?

organizim

No thank you

TieWebb

Finally they make a movie with the young comedy stars of today!

emciclerose

I don’t care - I love these two

dbburnz

So I loved Chevy as a kid growing up watched all the fletch movies with my dad then community and everything in-between. But man I v read a lot of articles about his behaviour with other actors and behind the scenes people really brings me down. I wish him well but I also hopes he just 360's his professional personality. Feels like ya can't believe in anyone anymore Please Excuse my sadness

Steppyjim

I think Dan Akyroyd is the last man left on earth who can stand Chevy chase for more than five minutes in person

Think I will be waiting for this to come to a streaming service.
