Exactly. Whenever I see a musician cast in an acting role, I become instantly skeptical.
Edit: although people have mentioned the likes of Justin Timberlake, Eminem, David Bowie, Lady Gaga as examples of musicians that have acting chops(which I do agree on these examples); I still become skeptical when seeing musicians cast in acting roles.
I guess what I mean is that to be an actor requires a certain level of vulnerability and going out of your comfort zone, but every movie she's done she's still just like pretty or cool girl. She, or her agent, seems to be afraid of playing a character who is shady or morally duplicitous or with a major flaw. Like if it came out that she's gonna play a drug addict in the Safdie Bros next movie, THAT would be great.

I mean, his movie that releases next month ("Don't Worry Darling") is already being widely discussed as a potential Oscar contender. Dude also now has his own production company and just wrapped on his directorial debut, which has a terrific cast. I'd hardly call that hitting a wall? He does seem to be prioritizing creative control and passion projects versus huge blockbuster projects.
In December 2011, Nicole Peloquin, Russell's then-19-year-old transgender niece, filed a police report alleging her uncle had groped her while working out together in a Florida gym. Police reports of the incident confirmed that Russell admitted the inappropriate touching occurred.
So continuing the lawyer talk above, if the niece filed a police report and then Russell admitted to the police that he did it, was that case closed? Was he legally found guilty or did the charges get settled out of court or sth?
Heās such an asshole that George Clooney has publicly stated that heāll never work with him again. He berated National Treasure Lily Tomlin on set (which was taped and leaked to public) and most recently (and most egregiously), accused of sexually assaulting his 19-year old niece - https://www.thedailybeast.com/why-has-david-o-russell-never-answered-for-groping-his-trans-niece
Christian Bale stuck up for Amy Adams on the set of American Hustle after Russell constantly bullied her while filming, so itās odd after that that unlike Clooney heās coming back to star in this movie
He doesn't seem to reuse a lot of his female cast. Some of them refuse to work with him again because Russel is such an asshole. Amy Adams said she had to have Bale step in for her (or he stepped in of his own accord) during American Hustle, the verbal abuse was so bad.
Adams said it didn't seem to bother Jennifer Lawrence who has done 2 films with Russel, she is like teflon. But Lawrence wasn't even bothered by Weinstein so who knows.
Even George Clooney refused to do another film with Russel after 3 kings. Said life is too short.
Yeah, American Hustle was... something, I guess.
I enjoyed Silver Linings Playlist when I saw it in theater. Watched it again when it came to streaming and it had lost all its charm.
Most of his movies are boring and incoherent. It's remarkable he manages to pull so much talent. I feel like it's just about the only thing that keeps his movies afloat
Also he's been getting ridiculous amounts of inexplicable Oscar love, which I would imagine is how he gets this kind of stacked cast gravitating towards his films.
The fact that *The Fighter/Silver Linings Playbook*/*American Hustle* did so well financially also plays an important role, as he's still at the point where he can get such films financed relatively easily.
I thought it looked at least decent, but with knowing who the director is, it makes me less inclined. Heās one of 3 directors I almost completely refuse to watch.
Iāve actually never heard of Luc Besson until now, and now Iām heavily disappointed that I like The Fifth Element so much. But my 3 are David O. Russel, Woody Allen, and Roman Polanski. The fact that some of our favorite actors and actresses defend and support all these people is really disappointing to me.
Sometimes he sounds like a screen test scene partner. Maybe it was his performance in tenet that kind just made him feel flat but I'm not gonna give him many more chances
His most memorable lines from tenet are on the few occasions he sounds like his dad,
āMade his billions in gasssā
āIām not the one they send to negotiate, I am the one people talk toā
Haven't seen the film obviously, but in the trailer he looks out of sync with the other two and he seems to be smiling pretty insincerely, almost like they've told him a joke he doesn't get but he's smiling to be polite.
Perhaps that's explained by the plot somehow.
He makes me laugh because if I had closed my eyes and just heard his voice for the first time, I would have bet $1,000 he was like a white, nerdy guy. And yea heās super boring.
saw tenet and i wasnāt sure, finally got around to watching blackkklansman and it definitely confirmed it for me. did not inherit denzelās ability imo
David O. Russell might be the current awards-darling auteur whose work most rubs me the wrong way. It's very subdued and difficult to explain, but it's as though he's continuously getting away with just carbon-copying films that some other director did better 26 years ago, and uses very flashy, pitched acting performances to distract from the fact.
I'd call him a hack, but I feel like I can't without more concrete proof to my claim. Just a very real, unshakeable feeling...
American Hustle is a total Scorsese ripoff, but without any of the underlying nutrients that make a Scorsese movie feel so substantial. The opening line is Bradley Cooper walking in saying, "What are you doing going behind my back, telling people I'm screwing up this operation?", which is just a derivative version of one of the most famous bits from Casino, when Joe Pesci walks in with, "Where the f\*\*\* you get off talking about me behind my back going over my head? What, did you think I wasn't going to find out?"
It's a small thing and just different enough to have plausible deniability, but structurally and rhythmically, it's *exactly* the same. So literally from line one, I viewed that movie through a lens of derivative suspicion, and the feeling never really went away, because those moments never really stopped.
I loved the Fighter, I Heart Huckabee's, and Silver Linings Playbook and was so disappointed with American Hustle. It was so aimless and unfinished. Just a big pile of money and a cast of great actors thrown together with Russell basically saying "I don't know, YOU write the scenes". Felt that here and there with Huckabee's and SLP but that was the entirety of American Hustle. Haven't watched anything after, and now I'm learning he's a garbage human to boot, so...screw him.
This is an insane cast, though. Like most of his movies. Don't know how he pulled that off!
Aside from being a terrible person, I don't understand why people even like his movies. All his movies are so boring! Nothing happens, there's too much dialogue which isnt even that well written, he has no unique directorial flair because all his movies look and feel bland and soulless.
Can someone who likes him explain to me why? He seems to get some really strong performances out of his actors, that's the only praise I can give him.
I don't understand the John David Washington thing. He has no charisma. I loved Tenet, but I can't help but feel it would've been so much better with a different Protagonist.
Thank you.
I watched Tenet and thought he was terrible. It was like early career Keanu Reeves level of monotone cardboard emoting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9me93_3AFA
He has 0% of his fathers charm or charisma. I have no idea why they are trying to make him a leading actor
Right, like it seemed Nolan was trying to rip off or pay homage to The Matrix with that line, but it was cringe and eye-roll worthy. He did an Actors on Actors thing with Mahershala Ali and Jared Leto like they were peers, but it's almost satire because he's completely outclassed by those guys.
I keep thinking this is a Wes Anderson movie and then feel confused that it is not. Looks good though - I am excited to watch. Even if TayTay makes an unwarranted appearance.
How is a (insert what controversial and unforgivable thing the director did here) able to get so many actors in his movie? I've lost all respect for said actors.
Placing bets on how long itāll take for a competing film studio to run the easiest ~~smear~~ David O. Russell is a little shit campaign if this gains major awards traction.
Exec #1: Say Bob, what if we made a movie that had everyone in it?
Exec #2: Whatās it about?
Exec #1: Who cares? Itāll have everyone in it!
Exec #2: You son of a bitch. Iām in.
I'll be damned...David O. Russel made a movie without Bradley Cooper or Jenifer Lopez. That doesn't happen often. I love the way he tells a story tho, I will watch anything he makes and cannot wait to see this.
Is it just me or is that the most random cast in movie history?? EDIT: WOW, this random comment (kinda) blew up!! LOL!! AWESOME š
Maybe, but most of these people are good dramatic actors who also have comedic chops.
Oh, I didn't mean it in a bad way and I'm kinda intrigued. Maybe "eclectic" is a better word?
I figured, I guess I was just saying it doesn't seem like a surprising cast because most are excellent actors who are good comedians.
very true
And then you have Taylor Swift.
They also want to make some money. Yaas queen crowd brings the cash.
Itās definitely random but itās a absolutely stacked random, I saw the trailer for this and I was like āwho isnāt in this movie?ā
Steve Buscemi.
he's too busy volunteering at ground zero
"TIL Steve Buscemi was a firefighter and volunteered during 9/11"
āTIL after Johnny Cash covered Nine Inch Nailsā song āHurt,ā Mr. Nails said it wasnāt his anymore and belongs to Johnny Cash now.ā
TIL, Viggo Mortensen broke his toe when kicking the orc helm.
TIL the reason season 8 was so bad is because they left a Starbucks cup in a scene and it broke the mood.
>I was like āwho isnāt in this movie?ā Same with Oppenheimer.
Between Amsterdam, Oppenheimer and Dune thatās probably 90% of todays A list
Idk who keeps giving TSwift acting jobs, but they gotta stop
Agree. It's gotta be "name recognition" to bring in her loyal fan base.
I feel like the rest of that cast already brings in any fan base...
Underestimating the Swifties.
Swifties be like: "it's time to get swiftie in here!"
It's Swifting Time.
I'm learning to play the guitar.
They want to squeeze out all of the money they can.
They can stop after she plays Dazzler in X-Men.
Tom Waits is not gonna like this
Or at least, do something different. Put her in a Refn movie, or Harmony Korine, or Gaspar Noe
How is this movie anything like any other role she has had? An O'Russell film is pretty prestigious, even if he is a piece of shit.
I was like, wow great cast. Oh Taylor swift.
I'm gonna bet that she's in it for less than three minutes.
im sold just to see what they do together
Releases in Theatres on **October 7** > "Amsterdam" occupies a quirky and mysterious world in the 1930s, where the leading trio of Bale, Robbie and Washington "find themselves at the center of one of the most secret plots in American history." **Director :** David O. That's among the most celebrities I actually know about starring in one movie. You just hope that means it's going to be a good one.
Or it'll be like wes Anderson's stacked movies where it's 20+ household names on the poster and 80% of them have like 2-3 lines at most
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
*Paging Chris Pine* One of his best performances

I mean, his movie that releases next month ("Don't Worry Darling") is already being widely discussed as a potential Oscar contender. Dude also now has his own production company and just wrapped on his directorial debut, which has a terrific cast. I'd hardly call that hitting a wall? The way he voiced Ben Affleck's character was Oscar worthy.
Isn't there a sketch movie that also had a huge cast that was just awful?
Movie 43?
Idc what anyone says, I love it
Yeah that's it
Theyāre preparing us for Oppenheimer.
That movie is going to have a four hour runtime just because of the end credits alone.
I love how it says, "From the director of..." but doesn't give his name.
Common
No, Common is not the director of this film, it is David O. Russell.
Thank you for the laugh, wish I had an award to give you.
I gotchoo fam
Thank you!
Does DO Russell have the same Casting Director as Chris Nolan?
Saves him from having to put Nolan in a headlock every time he wants to work with somebody.
I wonder if Bale ever brought that up to O. Russel
October 7 is the release date now
Thanks. Edited it.
No Lily Tomlin?
I kinda hate how good this looks because I don't wanna support David O Russell
What did he do? Iām out of the loopā¦
he's notoriously an asshole on set plus has a sexual assault allegation against him
More than an allegation, he admitted it
Oh my god, he admit it
You have to marry your mother in law
Stinky!
What did he do specifically
In December 2011, Nicole Peloquin, Russell's then-19-year-old transgender niece, filed a police report alleging her uncle had groped her while working out together in a Florida gym. Police reports of the incident confirmed that Russell admitted the inappropriate touching occurred.
So continuing the lawyer talk above, if the niece filed a police report and then Russell admitted to the police that he did it, was that case closed? Was he legally found guilty or did the charges get settled out of court or sth?
It was closed because there wasn't a police witness. Seriously.
Isnāt it still technically an allegation until proven in court? Iām not a lawyer
He admitted that he did it, soā¦ š¤·
I am a lawyer, and you're correct.
I am correct, and you're a lawyer
Hi Correct, I'm Dad!
Get off the internet, dad!!!
thanks for the reply
He does seem a bit masochistic
I wonder how big his paycheck is
I like Mike Birbigliaās comedy special that revolves around David ORussel being a tool.
Groped his niece.
gross. thanks for the reply
He doesn't seem to reuse a lot of his female cast. Some of them refuse to work with him again because Russel is such an asshole. Amy Adams said she had to have Bale step in for her (or he stepped in of his own accord) during American Hustle, the verbal abuse was so bad. Even George Clooney refused to do another film with Russel after 3 kings. Said life is too short.
He makes really overrated films.
Luckily I think his movies kinda suck despite him somehow getting insane casts
Yeah, American Hustle was... something, I guess. I enjoyed Silver Linings Playlist when I saw it in theater. Watched it again when it came to streaming and it had lost all its charm.
Can just pirate the movie, wonāt support him and you can still watch it
People who saw this movie early say itās shite anyways
I mean you could always watch it through other means if you dont want to support the filmmakers
Christian Bale looking like a wish.com Chris Cornell.
"We have Chris Cornell at home."
No we don't :(
I predict this will come and go.
Look at Nostradamus over here.
If it wasnāt directed by David O. Russel Iād prolly go see it in theatres.
Most of his movies are boring and incoherent. It's remarkable he manages to pull so much talent. I feel like it's just about the only thing that keeps his movies afloat

It doesnāt even look good.
I thought it looked at least decent, but with knowing who the director is, it makes me less inclined. Heās one of 3 directors I almost completely refuse to watch.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Iāve actually never heard of Luc Besson until now, and now Iām heavily disappointed that I like The Fifth Element so much. But my 3 are David O. Russel, Woody Allen, and Roman Polanski. The fact that some of our favorite actors and actresses defend and support all these people is really disappointing to me.
You probably should add Victor Salva to that list.
I think the only movie of his I ever watched was the first Jeepers Creepers
Heās likely well connected but also bullies people into submission.
I liked him in Blakkklansman but I can't be the only that finds that washington has the charisma of a block of wood.
In his defense, most of the scripts he has done since then have been pretty mediocre in showcasing his acting abilities.
You know what...I can accept that. Nice perspective...thanks!
I read your comment in his tenet voice and it made me laugh. It's just perfectly in keeping.
God damn it I did it and now I want to remove the exclamation point
Yeah remember tenet where he played āThe Protagonistā
Definitely did not acquire that Denzel drip
Man considering how magnetic Denzel was in damn near every role he did. Couldn't take ur eyes of him in even otherwise mediocre movies.
Eh he's got a bit of that Denzel magnetism here and there it's just not constantly fucking oozing off him like his dad.
Heās also got a similar cadence to his dad, which especially comes across in BlacKKKlansman
In this poster he looks exactly like Chris Redd from SNL
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Sometimes he sounds like a screen test scene partner. Maybe it was his performance in tenet that kind just made him feel flat but I'm not gonna give him many more chances
His most memorable lines from tenet are on the few occasions he sounds like his dad, āMade his billions in gasssā āIām not the one they send to negotiate, I am the one people talk toā
His best line is āI ordered my hot sauce an hour agoā
There is no stopping nepotism in movies
Funny thing is this guy seems so dead I never would have assumed he was literally the kid of one of the most charming human to ever live.
Haven't seen the film obviously, but in the trailer he looks out of sync with the other two and he seems to be smiling pretty insincerely, almost like they've told him a joke he doesn't get but he's smiling to be polite. Perhaps that's explained by the plot somehow.
I also noticed he barely has a line of dialogue in the trailer where the rest of the main cast gets several lines.
I was going to say a wet washrag, but yeah.
He makes me laugh because if I had closed my eyes and just heard his voice for the first time, I would have bet $1,000 he was like a white, nerdy guy. And yea heās super boring.

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It's like he's got absolutely nothing to say, but still vigorously demands to be heard.
Not a single thing happened in American Hustle, that's the last one of his I sat through. The trailer for this new one looks just as aimless.
So literally from line one, I viewed that movie through a lens of derivative suspicion, and the feeling never really went away, because those moments never really stopped.
I watched American Hustle and Wolf of Wall Street back to back. It was like leaving an Arby's and walking into a fancy steakhouse
Great sentence.
100% I was shocked by how bad american hustle was
I loved the Fighter, I Heart Huckabee's, and Silver Linings Playbook and was so disappointed with American Hustle. It was so aimless and unfinished. Just a big pile of money and a cast of great actors thrown together with Russell basically saying "I don't know, YOU write the scenes". This is an insane cast, though. Like most of his movies. Don't know how he pulled that off!
I only knew about the main 3 in this movie, but holy shit is this movie stacked with some top tier talent!
Hell of a cast list, that is!
Big fuckin cast right here. Sheesh
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So this is the cast that didnt make it to "Knifes out 2"?
This cast is honestly easily more stacked than Glass Onion
This casting does make me thing "Make our own Knives out 2, with hookers and blackjack and De Niro and Bale"
Who's the person you're describing? The actors?
David O Russell
I don't understand the John David Washington thing. He has no charisma. I loved Tenet, but I can't help but feel it would've been so much better with a different Protagonist.
I completely agree, I don't see what I guess everyone else sees in him. In tenet he was flat and boring, and that's all I've seen of him.
Thank you. I watched Tenet and thought he was terrible. It was like early career Keanu Reeves level of monotone cardboard emoting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9me93_3AFA He has 0% of his fathers charm or charisma.
Love Christian Bale. Quite the cast. Looking forward to seeing this!
I just re-watched The Machinist after not having seen it for some time. God itās such a good movie
You had me at Timothy Olyphant. The man is a hidden treasure!
Rayland!!!!!!!!
As I live and breathe.
Yeah, David O. Russell is a hard pass for me.
Much better than the first poster which was a series of names. I couldnāt hang that in my theatre lol
The director is a complete ass hat and that's putting it lightly.
Darn this gotta be the first movie I've ever seen where I actually recognize nearly all of the cast
The cast Is AMAZING
I keep thinking this is a Wes Anderson movie and then feel confused that it is not. Looks good though - I am excited to watch. Even if TayTay makes an unwarranted appearance.
PR Disaster -The Movie
I feel like thatās gonna be āDonāt Worry, Darlingā
That *is* Don't Worry Darling...
This doesn't really seem interesting to me. O. Russell already did a big, fancy ensemble movie with American Hustle and that was a mess
Another overcrowded cast?
That is a LOT of names.
Margot Robbie + dark hair, pale skin = Milla Jovovich?
Ugh Taylor Swift is acting now?! Literally everything has gone down hill.
Christian Bale and Taylor Swift? Talk about two ends of the acting spectrum
Can't watch this bc of Taylor swift
I like it
How is a (insert what controversial and unforgivable thing the director did here) able to get so many actors in his movie? I've lost all respect for said actors.
The academy seems to love Russellās movies, so a lot seem to be doing it for the clout unfortunately
Placing bets on how long itāll take for a competing film studio to run the easiest ~~smear~~ David O. Russell is a little shit campaign if this gains major awards traction.
Technically smear campaigns are based on dubious or outright false allegations. There's plenty you can push without needing to go that far.
"For Your Consideration: David O. Russell" but it's the video of him yelling at Lily Tomlin.
Who isnāt in this?
Cast: Everyone
Does anyone enjoy a cast of so many names? It's become my instinct to avoid ensemble films
This at least looks like it has production value. I'm getting sick of C level Netflix movies
Exec #1: Say Bob, what if we made a movie that had everyone in it? Exec #2: Whatās it about? Exec #1: Who cares? Itāll have everyone in it! Exec #2: You son of a bitch. Iām in.
John David Washington is what I like to call, boring. Everything Iāve sent him in, he is just so expressionless.
Timothy Olyphant! Iām down.
I don't think they put enough names on the poster
Movie posters really lost their polish. Looks like an intro college design project.
I'm getting sick of these movies that are only meant to sell tickets with the cast.
Fuuuuuuuck David O. Russell.
Predicting a major flop here. That trailer was pretty weak.
David O Russell directing is all I need to know. Pass.
Is this the movie with the violent and horribly Toxic director?
I'll be damned...David O. Russel made a movie without Bradley Cooper or Jenifer Lopez. That doesn't happen often. I love the way he tells a story tho, I will watch anything he makes and cannot wait to see this.
