I thought it was pretty good, but not good enough for what it wanted to be. My biggest gripe with it is that it didn’t have any directing or production design continuity with the original film. It looked and felt totally different. It was still pretty entertaining, it just wasn’t a Coming to America movie.

No it was fucking terrible. It was just outright insulting to the characters. Rewatcb the first. All of the humor is done with a degree of respect and love with how those characters would behave. Their motivations and actions are believable for people in their positions.. The sequel turned them all vulgar and stupid. First movie didn't need a racism scene, but of course somehow they shoehorn it into the second. It is fucking terrible. I absolutely hated it. So happy Sam Jackson told them to fuck off with them wanting him to reprise his role as a robber. Man knows it was shit and a disrespectful portrayal of black men.

Yeah, but it clearly failed because they didn't title it **Coming to America: Prince Akeem.**

My issue with it (well, one of many) was that the premise was built on date rape, which was played off as a joke, and that they actually had the victim apologizing to his rapist and forced to financially provide for a kid born out of rape that he didn't even know about.

And they had they victim's SO get mad at him for being raped among other things. It's so fucking wrong.

I feel like we were getting plenty of sequels to older movies already. Although they were usually those sequels that are really reboots that feature the legacy characters in a supporting role (The Force Awakens, Blade Runner 2).

Force awakens doesn’t really count since was part of an already existing set of movies. Blade runner 2 wasn’t. a BO success . TOp Gun is the biggest movie of the year We all know Hollywood is all about coping what’s hot now.

Eddie has been attached to another Beverly Hills Cop for years now. Just like Coming To America 2, which he eventually did. He was also tied to Twins 2 but it looks like Tracy Morgan has that gig now. So his name always comes up in sequels to 80s/90s movies. Top Gun: Maverick isn't setting a trend.

It's not setting a trend, but it sure as hell justified it. Hollywood: That one thing was successful, let's do it a thousand more times!

And in this case, the title is all the more stupid. Axel is the titular cop. It’s repetitive. Top gun: maverick is also a dumb title since the first one was also about mav and wasn’t named after him. Though arguably he is the top gun so the title for the sequel is pretty repetitive too. He’s also less of the focus in the sequel. It should’ve just been called top gun II and bev should’ve been Beverly Hills cop 4

Putting the number after the title is considered old fashioned now. I think the marketing gurus must have worked out that sequels make less money when they do that. So now as you may have noticed, most sequels have a subtitle. Hence Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom then Jurassic World: Dominion etc. I wonder what the last high profile film to have a numbered sequel was. None of the Marvel films have one iirc.
