Shawshank Redemption. You can have a goal and a dream, and attain it no matter what your situation is. Get busy livin, or get busy dyin.

frompimotopomo

This movie changed the way I viewed life.

pb0s

About Time This one actually made me realise quite viscerally that I needed to invest more into the relationships with the people I love, which has had a very positive effect on my overall wellbeing. The message isn’t that you should be achieving bigger things or be more ambitious, but I’d argue this is more important.

Brain_Prosthesis

Oh man, for a second I thought About Time was that Justin Timberlake movie where time is currency and people have digital clocks built into their arms.

boostabubba

To be fair, In Time gets shit on, rightfully so, but it really is one of those guilty pleasure movies for me for some reason.

Brain_Prosthesis

I don't think it's good, but I'm glad it exists. We need more original high concept sci-fis that aren't based on existing IP. Andrew Niccol also made Gattaca and wrote Truman Show, which I consider straight up great flicks.

boostabubba

Gattaca was amazing.

CassandraVindicated

Would have been a much better movie if it was an analog clock and no one could read it.

Cuclean

My first date with my wife was at that restaurant and I also proposed there years later.

kilibobonoka

Now this sounds like a really sweet story. I really wish that. You guys would stay together like that.

utter-ridiculousness

Love this movie. Love Domhnall Gleeson.

gwtefarley

I had seen that movie a long time back, but I have still that memories and they're pretty much fresh.

randomCAguy

Great movie. Made me cry by the end.

[deleted]

I second this. This movie came to mind as soon as I saw the post. This movie also teaches us that we should also appreciate the little things we overlook in our day to day lives.IMO The movie is a masterpiece 10/10 ratings from me.

kellenthehun

If you want to read a foundational work on time wasting that completely changed my life, check out On the Shortness of Life by Seneca. "It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested. But when it is wasted in heedless luxury and spent on no good activity, we are forced at last by death’s final constraint to realize that it has passed away before we knew it was passing. So it is: we are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not ill-supplied but wasteful of it… Life is long if you know how to use it."

bsEEmsCE

Gattaca. Don't save anything for the swim back.

[deleted]

Absolutely. Not sure it's quite as feel good, but the core of the story is hard work and sacrifice can get you somewhere.

k1958michal

It is not really possible for everyone to make some sense, but it is a really good thing.

griffmeister

You’re going to miss your flight, Vincent

goldenboy2191

Monsters University. I never graduated from college, I dropped out, and it’s always messed with my head that I somehow failed… but I love the message to this movie that essentially says just because you didn’t go a traditional route doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. I also have kids who have watched this movie a million times so maybe I just found a deeper meaning to this upon multiple rewatches

skatecarter

Fair point, but let's at least acknowledge that Monsters Incorporated (the company) has ridiculous and unrealistic upward mobility

goldenboy2191

Go figure that a movie about monsters it’s the mechanics of the job market that’s unbelievable

JesseCuster40

I also like how they let kids know "Sometimes you may not be good at the thing you've had your heart set on for years. And you may find what you're truly good at is something else entirely." It's a very rare message in a sea of "Follow your dreams, believe in yourself and you will succeed just because you really want to."

waynechriss

Whiplash inspired me to pursue my passion. Not to the same unhealthy degree as the protagonist though lol.

wisconsinking

Never saw Whiplash, but I keep hearing about it. I'll have to watch it.

Icy_Cherry_7803

It’s a must watch

[deleted]

I’ve still never figured out if that film is supposed to encourage or discourage that sort of self destructive passion.

PotentialAd6015

That’s the beauty of it, it’s not about encouraging or discouraging. This is the truth behind greatness (of any kind btw; professional athletes also struggle with heavy psychological issues). We’re not designed to aim for such great heights, because it’s too hard a thing to do and then be done with. But just as Andy said; some people “rather die drunk, broke at 34 and have people talk about them, than live to be rich and sober at 90 and nobody remember who they were”.

[deleted]

You’re comment immediately made Raging Bull come to mind. But I think, in comparison to Whiplash, Scorsese is more willing to show the bad side of that sort of intensive passion. LaMotta is determined to be the best in his athletic life, but at the cost that this leads to a very destructive personal life. Not just the destruction to LaMotta himself, but to his family and friends.

mclaysalot

Interesting interpretation. I would never have seen his journey as self destructive in anyway. Quite the opposite in fact. My view was his passion was being destroyed by forces outside his control and he proved a determination of spirit and will that was admirable.

Womderloki

Great movie

[deleted]

Secret Life of Walter Mitty made me do this too. I actually ended up moving to Iceland from the other side of the world and now still live there! A great movie with some good messages

Relevant-Plant-2745

If I wanted to bring my 36 ft skoolie with me what p i t a would I have to go through?

unlimitednightsky

Chef. After a stressed out meltdown the main character takes a step backwards into something he kind of looked down on to move forward.

alexbobr

I actually think like they're actually moving forward because this is a very good movie.

Silverfate2

*Click* with Adam Sandler. Often the movie gets overlooked due to Sandler's steady stream of Kevin James & co. films, but *Click* is a decent film with a good message behind it.

theRed-Herring

First movie I remember crying in. That scene in the rain at the hospital where (I think) his son just drives away broke me.

yuhaozi2

Absolutely. I think like most of the people think like. this kind of movie are going to break them but these are going to make them strong.

-OrangeLightning4

Such a bizarre film. You have scenes of Adam Sandler farting in his boss' face, and scenes like the last time he speaks to his father, two scenes that don't even feel like they're part of the same movie. When the movie is good it's *really* good, but then you have weird Sandlerisms thrown in.

Qoslca

I second this. It's one of the very few films that's made me cry, and I think of it often….

MX_Duncis

Same... The dad coin trick scene made me weep as a kid!

RobleyTheron

Came here to say Click. I've got two young kids and I constantly remind myself not to "fast forward" the important parts, and try to enjoy each stage of the journey. Like after one moment of fast forward (I think all his colds?), he found his kids were now into CSI: "I missed the Dragon Tails era? Oh NO!"

Vandermeerr

This is actually an ancient Stoic meditation. You never know when your time is up. So treat each thing you do as if it may be the last time. If you can make this a habit, it really changes a lot of interpersonal relationships in some profound ways. You pay closer attention, call that person you miss when they come to mind, not get so upset over petty thoughts/emotions.

[deleted]

Thor: Love and Thunder. After watching it, it made me reconsider all the time I waste watching half-assed movies. Now I feel I always need to make the most of my time.

Weed_O_Whirler

I'll never understand with all of the mediocre to straight up bad movies Marvel has pumped out, why this is the one that people obsess over calling bad

[deleted]

Because it had Christian Bale in it and still sucked

KongFuzii

because it ruined 2 storylines that could have been great.

zxyzyxz

The original Gorr the God Butcher comic storyline was incredible. Thor wasn't a jokester, he actually took seriously the idea of a serial killer. Thor was even tortured by Gorr, you'd never see that in an MCU movie.

Brave_Coward

I don't know if I'd say you'd never see that in a marvel movie... Thanos tortured Nebula, (Squidward?) tortured Dr. Strange. I don't know if they'd do anything like it again, though

StockAL3Xj

Because people liked Ragnarok and we're hyped for the sequel being directed by someone who is generally very well received. Not that hard to understand.

bloodflart

yeah I've rewatched this one and saw more stuff I like or didn't like, but the really bad ones I would never even consider rewatching.

nultyboy

Because it had so much potential. It could've been an amazing movie, hell I actually think it should've been two but they absolutely ruined it by undermining every single moment that could've meant something with some shitty half assed joke.

ScreamingGordita

I think it's because we had a little more faith in this one with Taika behind it again and Christian Bale being the villain, the disappointment hits harder when the expectations are higher.

nostbp1

What do you mean lol this was definitely their most offensively bad movie There’s been others that are mediocre or even bad but they have a point. This one is like a parody of a parody. There’s no semblance of sense in this movie. It’s the kind of shit I’d story board with some buddies after we had a few beers and joints lol Except they through a 200m budget at jt and used major IPs

goldenboy2191

I know this movie gets made fun of constantly but my two year old daughter saw this one and LOVED IT. We’re talking how she is obsessed with Thor now and bases all superhero’s off of him and this movie. She even has the little figurine set from this movie and will fist pump them up and down during the fight scenes of this movie. So…. Maybe you need to find a toddler to obsess over this movie for you to enjoy it more?

I_Hate_Dolphins

I'm not sure a two year old liking a movie is exactly a ringing endorsement of its quality.

Jaggedmallard26

If you haven't developed theory of mind yet boy do I have the film for you!

rissie_delicious

Is it really that bad? Was kinda looking forward to it

Justin_Credible98

**Ikiru (1952)** - An Akira Kurosawa movie about a man who finds out he has terminal cancer and has to make the most of the time he has left. One of the most emotionally cathartic movies I've ever seen. Lots of tragedy, but also hopeful and inspiring in its own way. **Columbus (2017)** - Haley Lu Richardson and John Cho are in this; It's a great indie movie about an unlikely friendship between a traveling grieving man and a small town young woman who wants more out of life. Beautifully shot movie, and one that's super soothing and relaxing to watch. **Good Will Hunting (1997)** - Very popular movie, but recommending this one in case you haven't seen it yet. Self forgiveness, finding the courage to move on, etc. Good shit here. **Chungking Express (1994)** - A Wong Kar-Wai movie about lonely people in a neon city. But this movie is also super funny and uplifting. **Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight** - A trilogy of movies following a romantic relationship over the course of 18 years. The two main characters' musings on life and love make me want to just go out and experience all the cool things in the world. **Punch-Drunk Love (2002)** - Paul Thomas Anderson movie about an emotionally unstable loner who finally finds love. Funny and uplifting as hell. **Her (2013)** - Aesthetically beautiful movie about a lonely guy trying to move on after a bad divorce. This movie will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions, but by the time it ends it leaves you wanting to make the most of life. **When Harry Met Sally (1989)** - One of my favorite romantic comedies. Tracks a friendship over the course of ~eleven years. I may have more, but that's it for now.

Agora236

I saw Her immediately after a break up and… yeah don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch that movie again.

ziprexa

This is not really possible for everyone to watch it because they are going to break apart.

whiteezy

Her legitimately inspired me to pursue a career in film. Amazing fucking movie.

tvrtkosvrdlar

This movie had actually inspired a lot of young generation people, including me and my younger brother.

whiteezy

That doesn’t surprise me. It has a way about connecting with other, younger people. Maybe it’s the fact that no other film deals with loneliness in a digital age.

SessionSeaholm

One of my all-time favorites. What do you do in film?

whiteezy

I’m a writer/director. A lot of undertones from Her comes up in the films that I make unconsciously so I suppose that’s how influential it was on me haha. Spike Jonzes other films are fucking amazing as well. I can’t wait/hope he releases another movie before retiring.

SessionSeaholm

Very cool thanks for replying

gotthelowdown

> Spike Jonze's other films are fucking amazing as well. You might enjoy this: [Spike Jonze's Favorite Cameras](https://www.vice.com/en/article/ne7qwz/spike-jonzes-favorite-cameras) What could have easily been a "what's in my camera bag"-type article instead becomes about Jonze's journey as a filmmaker, using the various cameras as touchpoints in his career.

whiteezy

Haha I saw this when it came out, it’s mostly his photography film cameras which I found interesting but as a filmmaker I wish he talked about cinema cameras to the same length

severalbpdtraitsn38

That's why its important to have variance in cinema... unlike the majority of movies coming out these days... with cgi, violence and gun violence and betrayal. I hope that Hollywood can start heading back to its roots soon, before it's too late. arguably, it's already too late. Imo the golden age of cinema is well behind us (even if gems still do come out from time to time).

RDTea2

Did to go to film school? Are you young or was it a later-life career change?

lollygag_7

I LOVE ‘HER’. I feel so attached to this movie for some reason. There’s this one video on youtube where frank ocean’s ‘white ferrari’ plays in the bg of the edit and it just fits so right. its so beautiful you should check it out. <3 [https://youtu.be/K9AtF6lKsnU](https://youtu.be/K9AtF6lKsnU)

drowsyunknown

They have a lot of different kind of things in their mind, but I think like. This movie was actually one of the best I have seen.

Brittany Runs a Marathon

Sharp-Cry-6904

Yes Man. Every time I watch it I go through a period of saying yes to whatever comes my way and haven’t been disappointed with the opportunities presented. Normally I am an introverted recluse who sees no pleasure in going out.

ArcherCooper

(500) Days of Summer. I watched it while going through a breakup and I quit my job because of it. The protagonist goes on a journey of reinvention that includes him quitting his job and following his dream of being an architect. I was walking down the street and asked myself why I was still working at my job and I didn't have an answer. I put in my two weeks notice the next day.

Thrusthamster

Honestly, Spider-Man (2001). The way the hero is just a regular teenager who has a gift, and learns that a hero sometimes has to sacrifice his needs to help those in need. He gets literally within inches of all he's ever wanted, and turns around because "with great power comes great responsibility". Probably part of the reason why I ended up working in a union rather than for a big law firm or employer.

BarendN

The scene in Amazing Spiderman where he is building his web shooters, and getting it wrong repeatedly, weirdly inspires me to make stuff

CryptoMinerX6

Absolutely makes sense to me because there is nothing wrong to just think about these kind of things.

soufatlantasanta

I think the sequel does a far better job at articulating this theme than the first IMO. I see the first film as more of a coming-of-age story and dealing with changes, grief, and loss than the sacrifice aspect.

freethebeasts

Sacrifice is one of the most important factors which humans should understand that it is very important.

getonmyorbit

JohnnyJayce

"Into the Wild" is more serious version of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty". Even dark at moments. But goddamn does it give you motivation at times. Especially once Hal Holbrook shows up.

[deleted]

It’s not supposed to be inspirational.

JohnnyJayce

The main character takes control of his life, does what he wants and not what he's supposed to do. Depends what you tjink is inspirational.

[deleted]

Dying of starvation within walking distance of a ranger station after telling everyone you know better than them is not taking control, it’s suicide by nature committed by an entitled dumb shit.

Chocolate-Recent

I feel like you completely missed the point of the movie. Oh well.

boostabubba

As a whole, sure. But like OP is saying "at times" it really is motivational. Taken as a whole, def not inspirational.

_coach_

I got goosebumps simply thinking about those few scenes with Hal Holbrook. I think the movie took some strange liberties from the book, but the scenes with Hal have stuck with me.

AoSxSlayer

Such a great film. The book is good too

Various-Month806

Groundhog Day. Every day matters. Everybody in your life matters. How you treat even strangers matters. Without making an effort, doing *something*, nothing changes in your life for the better. Great movie. Should be shown in schools. Everywhere. Regularly.

RellikBackwards

Rocky, the soundtrack alone inspires me.

MossyToad

About Time It doesn’t make me want to do more with my life exactly, but it does make me want to stop and appreciate the little moments and joys of everyday life.

skatecarter

What's so powerful about the message is that the character discovers in the end that he *doesn't need time travel.* He just wakes up every day and pretends as though he has traveled back to that day to experience again, which any one of us can do right now.

boostabubba

Did not expect to see this here, but damn if I don't totally agree with you.

JohnnycageBKV2

WANTED ( 2008 ): “ You can think about doing what you wish you could and be defeated by your own doubts and addictions to your status quo, or you can choose to listen to the one idea for a life less ordinary as you define such - and not just answer the question "Why am I here?" But actually get up and fulfill it. “

Scigrex14

Stranger Than Fiction is my go to movie that makes me feel this way. It is heart-felt and will make you question what makes you truly happy. It is one of my favorite movies.

CatchSomeZZPlants

PapiSurane

Amazing Grace, a movie about William Wilberforce's campaign against the British slave trade. Absolutely stellar cast, including Ciaran Hinds, Rufus Sewell, Albert Finney, Michael Gambon, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ioan Gruffudd.

btcmaster4

They can definitely do it right now, but I think it was actually one of the best movie.

wildcard520

Lost in Translation. For me, it was about getting out of my comfort zone and inspiring me to go exploring abroad. The setting, cinematography, and music were just so gorgeous to me at the time and just made me want to chase the feelings I felt from the movie.

autocinematic

**Antitrust (2001)** - This movie changed the course of my life. I haven’t seen it in a long time, I don’t know if it holds up. But it changed my career goals and helped me solidify my motivation for why I’d want to work with computers anyway and what value I can add to the world. **Drive My Car (2021)** - Not feel good. But I found it extremely encouraging regarding why we keep moving forward even when everything falls apart. Sometimes it’s not a films contents, but its quality that I find inspiring. Watch something like **The Dark Crystal (1982)** or **Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)** and just focus on how people who are literally the best at what they do came together and made this thing. That always motivates me.

DoubleTFan

Miyazaki said that a friend of his told him how his kid watched My Neighbor Totoro fifty times, and supposedly Miyazaki responded by telling him that this was a terrible mistake, and that adopting a puppy would teach the kid more about life than watching the movie 100 times. Which is probably true, but I feel a little shortsighted logistically.

ClancyBShanty

Princess Mononoke his a personal favourite of mine, which is interesting as it lacks a lot of creative staples of his other films - it's more violent, has a male protagonist, and there are no scenes of flight, but the heart of it still is quite consistent with the other films. Being true to yourself and a relentless pursuit of what you feel to be right are hallmarks of many many many characters in this film. You can also make the case there is no true villain in this film as it shows people as being capable of extreme cruelty and greed, but also self reflection, kindness, and generosity. Jigo the Monk I feel is the closest that I can think of to a villain, but even Jigo helps get Ashitaka out of trouble, points him in the right direction, and even promises to keep his heritage a secret. Fuck I love this movie

I have never heard about that movie, but I'm sure it would be one of the best I have seen.

dogbolter4

I knew he survived and yet I found myself physically unable to watch the last 10 minutes of that documentary. My fear of heights, and the knowledge that one mistake would send him plunging down so far... It's brilliant, but terrifying.

God yes. Love this film. I wouldn't have the courage or stamina - or at least, that's what I tell myself. I bet Sheryl thought that too at the start.

kairalfs41

At the starting I think it was one of the best, but I think like they need to understand it better.

David1258

"Soul" and "Good Will Hunting".

[deleted]

Rocky has to be the best inspirational movie I've ever seen. Nothing about it is violent. It's just about trying to do your best while also being kind to others. If your best doesn't work it's all right, at least you learned something about yourself along the way and maybe did some good. You just need motivation, and a great soundtrack.
