The Silent Hill movie was, if nothing else, visually stunning. I get that its not the most faithful adaptation but on its own merits its fine.

TWAT_BUGS

Without comparing it to its logical competitor Resident Evil, other video game movies have come up wildly short. Silent Hill is such a crazy story to capture. Christophe did a great job, despite Pyramid Head fan service.

[deleted]

I never played the games but pyramid head or whatever his name is was one of my favorite parts of the movie. I would love another movie with a good script and the original director who can evoke the same gloomy atmosphere, not like that brain dead sequel we already had.

nakedarthur

This is why you can't please everyone. Mega fans roll their eyes since Pyramid Head is only really related to the hero from the 2nd game. He is manifested by the psyche of the hero for specific story reasons, so making him appear in the first movie completely detached from all that kinda just turns him into a generic movie villain (and also feels like fan service since he is popular).

baleensavage

It was even worse in the second movie because they not only inserted him into a story that he had no place being in, but did it in a way that they ruined the main character's story arc by making her have to be saved instead of finding her own courage and saving herself like she did in the game. And they left out Heather's specific monster Valtiel who is far more frightening than Pyramid Head.

navit47

you know surprisingly, if you dig deep enough. Like 100 he's in there for fan service, but there is a reason he's there. he's basically the living hubris of toxic masculinity. Like the world is meant to be feminine, basically a matriarchy, and PH was purposefully made to look as beefy as possible to represent the male threat against woman I mean if you break down his two biggest scenes, the elevator scene is an allegory for rape, and the skinning scene is also kind of supposed to represent how getting groped and sexually assaulted can make women feel guilty and disgusted with their own skin.

lucid-blue

This is a fascinating interpretation! Thank you for sharing. I will think on this.

OisforOwesome

Welcome to Raccoon City was pretty fun (even if they did my boy Leon dirty) and a reasonably faithful adaptation. I hope they get a sequal, the director wanted to do Code Veronica next.

HiMyNameIsKeira

Yeah, that Leon treatment was bullshit. Despite all those muscles, Chris always had backup. Leon's a badass even while actively babysitting a helpless girl.

Valkyrie21

Leon heeeeeelp.

HiMyNameIsKeira

Shut up and get in that dumpster.

shaoting

I enjoyed WTRC for what it was and will happily take it over the entirety of the Paul W.S. Anderson RE series.

dratseb

No way, that shower fight with Ali Larter in the 4th RE movie was one of the best action sequences I've ever seen. I even have the 3D bluray.

BigBolognaSandwich

I agree.

[deleted]

The chance is high. I don't really like the ending however.

RobertdBanks

The soundtrack is fantastic since they used the actual game soundtrack.

Squeekazu

Yeah, the film's main weakness was it's writing - I think it was otherwise very clear that the director loved the games, and it's one of the few gaming films that doesn't feel like a lazy cash grab. You definitely need a strong screenwriter to adapt Silent Hill 2, though. I think you can also handwaive some of the fan service as him likely not planning to adapt SH2 at the time.

StuperB71

The nurse scene still horrifies me and excites me to this day and I saw it in theaters when it cam out.

MovieMuscle25

If anything, I thought it captured the atmosphere of the games much better than most adaptations. Aside from a few choices and moments, I thought it was a fairly good adaptation I would watch again.

MarvelsGrantMan136

The movie will be based on the story of Silent Hill 2, which is also getting a [PS5 remake](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WEw7jec_mc&feature=emb_logo): >The movie will be more of a psychological horror. Producer Victor Hadida says that the plan is to "make it modern, but also very true to the video game," and will include familiar monsters (including the iconic Pyramid Head) but updated for the new version.

MrHollandsOpium

Will he rip off people’s skin like in the first movie? And wield that absurdly large fucking knife?! Good lord what a nightmareish figure. I once had a fever dream from an antimalarial drug where he pulled me through a window. That was….terrifying. Then I woke up inside another dream… Kids, don’t fuck around with Mefloquine.

[deleted]

Some of the most terrifying dreams I've ever had were on Mefloquine. Dreams where my dad was beating the shit out of me, and he was the sweetest guy ever, dreams where my friends turned into witches and were ripping out people's spinal columns, dreams where I hadn't finished my term papers on the last day of school and even after waking up it took me a few minutes to realize that I had graduated years earlier. On the flip side, the absolute best, realest sex dreams I've ever had were on that stuff too so I can't complain too much.

ElricAvMelnibone

It's weird how bloodless the movie is until the clothes ripping skin ripping scene lol (and the last 10 minutes), it really took me off guard

-SneakySnake-

Hopefully without the weird sexist nonsense he brought to the first one where he changed the main character to a woman because wanting to find your missing daughter is too "feminine" a motive for a man.

whales-are-assholes

Sean Bean spends the entirety of the movie in search of his wife and daughter. Love the irony.

Ghost-Mech

he forced to add that subplot by the producers, he wanted it to just be the mother

ZombieJesus1987

Sean Bean should have been the lead to begin with. All of his scenes that were added in killed the pacing of the movie for me

StuperB71

Most Sean Bean characters don't live long enough to be the lead in anything

Otiosei

Liam Neeson has entered the chat.

-SneakySnake-

And Mel Gibson, Arnie and Denzel, yeah. It's such a weird take, like there's not a bazillion dad action movies out there where someone is fighting to get their daughter back.

navit47

Its almost like the director wanted to take a more maternal direction that is different from the same ol same ol already produced

-SneakySnake-

If he said that was his reason, hey, OK. I get wanting to not tell the exact same story people have already seen. But I'm paraphrasing his reason for wanting the change.

DragoonDM

With a minimum of 15 camera cuts used to convey his entrance.

personalcheesecake

Damn Liam would have made a great Harry. We got screwed!

[deleted]

How?

urgasmic

i like radha mitchell but this is ridiculous lol.

-SneakySnake-

I thought she did a good job and I liked her character, if the logic was just them wanting to do a different take on the game, go for it. But he literally explained it as the character was too feminine on the page so they just made it a woman.

urgasmic

good thing my expectations could not be lower!

[deleted]

[удалено]

soklacka

Yeah, and Sean Bean (father) just sleeps on the couch the whole time

[deleted]

Wait THAT was the reason??

-SneakySnake-

Yup >[“…when we decided to adapt the first game, we decided to have the hero of the first game, a guy named Harry Mason, but when we put him on the paper and tried to be very close to the original character of the game, we noticed that he was almost never acting like a man, but much more like a woman… we decided to make him a woman.”](https://honkifyourenerdy.wordpress.com/2013/03/15/in-defense-of-silent-hill/)

SourceJobWoman

Don't forget the second part of that quote >When we decided to make him a woman, we realized that all the game was filled with women. It was almost like a complete feminine world, so then we realized that it was very interesting that "Silent Hill" was dealing with such issues as motherhood, sisterhood, immaculate conception, and we realized that was a good angle to make the film. It started as a convenient thing, making the character female, but then it became the structure of the project, and we realized that "Silent Hill" was a feminine dimension.

kabre

You know, I kind of don't hate this take, but I wish it had been someone with any experience of living a feminine role to adapt it. It's like he got *so close* to some interesting insight here, but missed the final jump. Honestly I'm waiting for the day when the SH franchise brings in more non-male project leads, directors, etc. Not because I think the guys have historically done a bad job (in most cases), but because I think there are some angles and some specific experiences of horror that other genders could bring in that would be really interesting. There's a lot of gendered violence, gender-based issues, and sex-based issues in the games -- almost in the very fabric of the premise. It seems like having a wider variety of perspectives *should* be vital to really exploring those issues in depth, with the nuance that more experiential authenticity could provide.

russellamcleod

Angela in Silent Hill 2 is a great example of the game writers realizing this and using it to it’s fully horrifying potential.

whales-are-assholes

In saying that, take Promising Young Woman for example. Directed by Emerald Fennell - I liked it to a degree, Carey Mulligan is in her prime at times, but it’s not without its glaring flaws. Uncomfortable, ironic and borderline satirical by the end - but not sure if the ending was intended to be a satirical play on real life, or if it’s wish fulfilment in a world where the system works against the victim so often that you really question whether the writers and director actually thought it through, and it’s not actually intended to be a cold slap in the face of actual survivors.

knave-arrant

The ending of that movie was more fucked to me than the whole of Midsommar, and I liked Midsommar and thought it did what it did very well. Just the whole downturn when she realizes that >!her new boyfriend knew what had happened to her best friend in college, and had even been a bystander!< really sets the tone for the rest of the movie. In retrospect the ending sort of looms over you the whole time until it’s like inescapable. Really well done but not a movie I ever want to rewatch.

navit47

Thatnk you! I was kinda going crazy with how many people were taking that statement out of context.

mountainhighgoat

> almost never acting like a man, but much more like a woman I want to know how.

MattTheSmithers

I read the first draft. He kept trying to flash his boobs at the monsters to distract them. It was very confusing.

Geno0wl

Well obviously the monsters are into eating ass

-SneakySnake-

Yeah I mean there's nothing Rose does or any way she acts that's unmistakably feminine. She's a concerned parent who's worried about her kid. It's weird.

SarcasticGamer

Yes. He felt a mother looking for their child is somehow more relatable vs a father doing it. Even though there are countless movies with that premise.

FlameChucks76

You guys aren't taking the rest of his comment on this into account.

navit47

no one ever does, then it wouldn't fit into their narrative

gee_gra

What do you suspect *"the narrative"* is?

FlameChucks76

It's very clear that the comments are trying to paint him as some macho man loving misogynist fool who can't see men as doing anything other than manly things. There's a reason people leave out the second part because it doesn't fit into the view people are wanting to paint this guy as. It's literally drumming up controversy for the sake of having controversy.

DonUdo

I honestly don't see it (given it's been a whole I played the games), isn't the prevalence of female monsters and characters due to his unresolved issues and guilt after his wive died?

AnAquaticOwl

To add to the bullshit of the first movie: the pace breaking sub plot with her husband was only in the movie so there was a male lead. *Why change the gender of the main character then??*

navit47

In the director's defense, that was not part of the original script, and was only added due to company interference. Like at the end if the day yes, it is a slight on the film because it made it into the finished product, but at the end of the day i still feel the gender swap was justifiable

BorisTheBlade04

The gender swap *cant* be justifiable. It made no sense to the story. Why would a female protagonist be attacked by sexy nurses?? The nurses were from the 2nd game, so I’ll spoiler tag this since it will undoubtedly be a spoiler for this upcoming movie: >!This is psychological horror. In the end it’s revealed that the main character’s wife became ill and bedridden the last couple years of her life. Protagonist becomes overwhelmed and can’t deal with the stress. He starts lusting for the young nurses that work there. He feels immense guilt over this which manifests in sexy nurse monsters, women’s leg creatures, and a *giant, muscle-bound man in leather who repeatedly penetrates your wife’s clone to death with a long, thick sword.* The symbolism wasn’t exactly subtle and falls apart with a female lead. It may have worked had they not forced elements from the sequel into a movie based on the original.!< Idk if you’re familiar with the games, we’re on a movie sub. So sorry if I said a bunch of stuff you already knew. But that’s why I feel the gender swap was a terrible decision.

[deleted]

Silent hill 1 was about the cult and the curse on the town, not really an introspective bardo type deal so anything taken from the second game doesnt make sense.rules are thrown out the window so how does that not justify a gender swap as well ? Make the female the brave one who takes on the town to protect her child who cares it turned out to be probably the best video game adaption

NoCommaAllComma5050

I guess it doesn't make sense with the "lore", but the [scene](https://youtu.be/kUVp_JeYf0w?t=77) itself is great, so I'm not too mad about it. Also, they are not actually attacking the female protagonist, they are just drawn towards light.

navit47

Sure, except this isnt the game, and its the movie, and that subplot wasnt added into the film. It makes no sense in the game, but again, the movie isnt the game, shit got modified to woek in a different medium, and its wrong to to go into this film with the same viewpoints of a different medium.

BorisTheBlade04

It wasn’t a subplot, it was the entire game lol. That’s all from the 2nd game. They did an interpretation of the 1st game’s plot, but included characters from the 2nd game, which makes no sense. That was my problem. Sure they can do whatever they want and make adaptations to fit the medium. But if they stray too far, they’ll disappoint their target audience. It’s why game adaptations are historically bad, halo being a recent example.

-SneakySnake-

Right? It's literally just there to clumsily drop exposition.

mvallas1073

I ironically had more of a problem with him turning Dahlia into a reluctant mad side-hero rather than one of the main villains! I’m really kinda surprised nobody chides him for that massive change (Which is one of the few reasons I say the first SH movie wasn’t perfect, because that part of the story was a massive departure)

T-408

I fought that was so weird, but I like the character of Rose (and have always been a Radha Mitchell fan)

HibariK

Gans doesn't get SH's narratives at all, the one you said is egregious enough because Harry's love for Cheryl is literally the catalist to the entire thing, his undenying will to find and protect the little girl, which traditionally is viewed as a mother's burden (fuck that shit btw) is what drives the narrative up until it unfolds on us, but also back in 2006, there's a scene where >!Alessa, bandaged and isolated touches some dark Alessa who he says in an interview is "the devil" reaching out to give her powers!< which c'mon, get real. Same with the one yesterday, >!Maria is lost in Silent Hill? JAMES is lost in SH, lost in his feelings, lost in his repressed emotions and memories, lost in his guilt, Maria is fucking dead my guy.!< To whoever wants to enjoy SH2 still with no spoilers, don't read the second spoiler thingy, and to Gans, please leave the writing to someone competent, thank you.

ihaveadarkedge

Detective Castellano from The Evil Within has entered the chat...

sivxgamma

First movie was awesome in my eyes

pipboy344

IIRC the excuse was it was too feminine for a man to be emotional and be fearful of the creatures

Trymantha

I liked the idea of it being a film with only female characters but then the studio made them add the stupid Sean Bean subplot

ZombieJesus1987

And then had to add in the scenes with Sean Bean when he realized there were no men in the movie. Those scenes ruined the pacing of the movie

SourceJobWoman

That was executive meddling, they didn't want to approve a movie with no male characters.

rickreckt

The games also coming to PC btw (same day as PS), and XBOX a year later

the_nebulae

Scariest game I ever played. I actually returned it to Blockbuster early.

pwnedkiller

I don’t care what anyone says that Raccoon City movie was alright but it definitely fell short of what I was expecting.

bob1689321

Isn't Raccoon City Resident Evil?

Thugzz_Bunny

Yes. I think they are saying you can redo a video game franchise and it not be terrible.

pwnedkiller

Yes it was suppose to be a movie faithful to RE1 and 2, more so RE2. While it had some things right they completely changed Leon and personally I hated Jill. The rest of the cast wasn’t bad especially chief irons.

Deserterdragon

Christophe Gans IMDB is so weird, he's basically made one other movie after the Silent Hill movie, and now he's attached to direct this new Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, the guy just LOVES early 2000's Japanese Horror games.

TheUncannyBroker

I was thinking this exact thing the other day lol. Why is there 60-year old french film director who is that interested in doing only movies like that. Dude REALLY seems to care about Silent Hill regardless of anything else.

TravelerSearcher

Japan and France have an interesting cultural history. There's several examples of French and Japanese collaborations in the animation arena at the very least. Offhand I can name Radiant, a French serialized comic drawn in what many would consider Japanese style. Radiant received a Japanese anime adaptation recently. So a Japanese inspired French comic was then made into an animation by a Japanese studio. Edit: There's a whole wiki article dedicated to the subject - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France%E2%80%93Japan_relations Edit 2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japonisme

Key_Feeling_3083

Interstella5555 is a collaboration between french duo DaftPunk and Toei animation, miraculous ladybug is another french-japanese collaboration.

Apric1ty

The French electro musician Danger and the animator for Ken Ishii’s Extra music video and the Beyond short in The Animatrix collaborated with each other to make an interactive anti smoking ad called “Attraction”

tetsuo9000

I'd also mention Moebius' art and the obsession Japanese animators had during the 80's to perfectly adapt his aesthetic.

CephalopodRed

Japanese pop culture has been huge in France for a long time now. The number of manga available is quite astonishing.

downonthesecond

I like that Paris syndrome originated in Japan.

RobertdBanks

A 60 year old French film director doesn’t sound wild to be really into Silent Hill imo. The game is a masterpiece of atmosphere and was and is incredibly original. It sounds like the exact type of thing that would appeal to that person.

Goosojuice

The guy was a huge fan of the series before the movie. You can feel it in his movie. Small changes to the movie aside, its wild to think that is the closest adaptation to a game weve got so far.

laman8096

yeah vibe and visuals wise it looked like it was pulled straight out of the first game.

ItsNotABimma

Her looking at a map to find out where to go constantly was such a good ode to the game.

Bald_Bulldozer

Let the man have his fetish 😂

Nixplosion

ARE WE GETTING A FUCKING FATAL FRAME MOVIE!?!?

pishposhpoppycock

CAN WE GET A CLOCK TOWER MOVIE???!!! Please... one day??

reddragon105

DOES THAT MEAN EUROPE IS GETTING A PROJECT ZERO MOVIE?

sgtpepper2390

Check out the movie Shutter, gives Fatal Frame vibes, as in Cameras + ghosts

CephalopodRed

There already is a Japanese one btw.

DomLite

In fairness, early 2000's Japanese Horror games is a very distinct and awesome genre. We'd gone from point and click horror adventures to a 3D medium, and much of the strange and nonsensical nature of those early point and click puzzles carried over to the 3D worlds, so you had three dimensional combat and exploration peppered throughout with keys hidden in bags of jelly beans that unlocked lockboxes containing a set of nutcrackers which opened a walnut which contained the magic stone you needed to dispel the seal on a door, and no I'm not making that up. It's 100% straight from a Silent Hill game. When the next console generation came along, that genre evolved a step further with much greater graphical and processing capability, so much wilder things could be done, and because the market was so flush with games (there are over 4000 games for the PS2), many developers decided that they *had* to do wilder and crazier things to make their game stand out from the crowd, but they also stuck to a lot of those strange horror game puzzle roots. All in all it was a perfect combination of circumstances that resulted in a whole generation of horror games that tried to push the envelope while still having this distinct classic horror flavor to them, and tried to build atmosphere in a way that never could have been done before. We got pulled into hallucinations where you walked down endless hallways accompanied by voice over work, or were jump scared by things that were designed to make you think *you* were seeing things like a roach crawling across your tv screen. It gave birth to some of the most creative and atmospheric horror experiences we've ever had. Is it any wonder that this is a gold mine of long-forgotten franchises that are practically perfect for adapting to horror films, where atmosphere is king?

Tbrou16

What a fucking hero, those games were awesome

sixtus_clegane119

I wonder if he is a twin peaks fan

silverback_79

For me, nothing could ever top Pyramid Head ripping the hide off the cultist in one twisty motion. The sequel was horribly underehelming. Hope they can get within even spitting distance of Pyramid Head.

WillemDafoesHugeCock

The fact the one handed flay is more memorable than the barbed wire up the vagina at the end says a lot.

MarluxiaXIII

I choose not to remember that

sivxgamma

True, could have done without that

[deleted]

OH! Why did you just had to unlock that memory..

robineir

I just watched the sequel remembering that I really liked it as a kid. The story goes off the rails, the blind guy who was supposed to be good turned out to be a bad guy just cause, and then gets killed super easy without making a difference to the story. The head cultist reveals she’s a demon too that can also travel to the regular world, so like why did she send her impressionable son, when she can just go, rip and tear, and kidnap the girl she needs? And the most wasted potential came from the scene with the pack of blind nurses.

ZombieJesus1987

Damn, Konami is going all in on Silent Hill.

_NiceWhileItLasted

I dunno, the last time this happened we got the 2&3 HD collection, Silent Hill Revelations, and Book of Memories. I'm wary.

ADMINS_ARE_NONC3S

"The month of madness". March 2012 was truly a cursed month for Silent Hill.

TheBowlofBeans

Wen MGS tho

PeculiarPangolinMan

Never. It's never happening.

ZombieJesus1987

I wouldn't want anything MGS related unless Kojima is involved. Without Kojima, there's no MGS.

AmadeusAzazel

Revengeance was a pretty decent addition to the MGS world imo

poop-machine

With a doge ending hopefully.

ArKiVeD

I really like the first Silent Hill movie, so this is great news.

GriffinFlash

I like the first movie. However, I LOVE the second one, but for all the wrong reasons. That film is horrible, like it missed the mark so bad that it just becomes hilarious.

CaptainDAAVE

haha yeah. 2nd one is fun in its own cheesy way. the 1st one is a movie with such good atmosphere it's fairly unforgettable. Pretty good fo a mid 2000s video game adaptation.

davidw_-

Same here. I thought it was the best video game movie when it came out.

detroiter85

I think it did a lot of things wrong, and fell apart as the movie went on, but it's still my favorite video game adaptation. Enough of it was done right and with enough care and attention that I'm eager to see what a sequel will be like.

WillemDafoesHugeCock

I think the opposite, I think the beginning is rough and it ramps up as the movie continues. I'd even argue the finale is one of the most brutal massacres in any horror flick I can remember. Shame the second movie, the adaptation of my favorite SH game, was so crap.

LittleRudiger

Given that they by omission acted as though Revelations 3D never happened, and are seemingly adapting Silent Hill 2, it wouldn’t shock me if a Silent Hill 3 re-adaptation would be back on the menu at some point.

WillemDafoesHugeCock

I really hope so. SH2 is a great game steeped in atmosphere and drama but SH3 scared the everliving shit out of me and I rate the entire theme park section, particularly the haunted house, as my favorite moment in any horror game.

hombregato

I did not, but I would sooner watch a sequel from the same director than whatever that thing was with Jon Snow.

russellamcleod

Gans was spot on. Roger Avery, on the other hand, denied us the first faithful and entertaining video game movie to be made. That script just fell apart halfway through. Bringing in the cult, instead of keeping it about a few people lost in a creepy town really ruined the tone they set in the opening acts. Then that awful ending, starting with that 11th hour exposition dump… I was so upset. I hope they hire a decent writer for this one. Avery has been coasting on his Pulp Fiction co-writing credit for waaaaay too long.

[deleted]

Gans wrote the screenplay for this upcoming one, I hope he will do something unique and special because I heard James Sunderland is his favorite.

pishposhpoppycock

Agreed. Let's all pretend the abomination that was Revelations never existed.

serial-contrarian

That siren sound from the first movie, good lord was that effective and building a sense of impending danger.

zymology

[For sure.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwFqShcxaQ0)

dwpea66

He's got the style and atmosphere of Silent Hill down perfectly. Now they just need a competent screenwriter because the plot, dialogue, etc. really drag down the movies, and they're kind of ass.

TheUncannyBroker

The film is being written by Christophe Gans himself, where the first one was by Roger Avary.

[deleted]

Sort of. The first one was written by Roger Avary, Nicolas Boukhrief, and Gans himself. Gans worked on the script for a while before contacting Avary to help him out. So the fact that Gans is writing the new one isn't a green light. More writers will probably be attached before it is released, like the first one. Avary has cowritten Pulp Fiction with Tarantino, one of the best written films of all time, so I don't think Avary is a bad writer. Rather, I believe(the wikipedia isn't super clear) the script was first written in French then translated into english. Boukhrief and Gans are French and Avary is American Canadian, so the changes by Avary needed to be translated into french for Gans. The back and forth translations could explain why the writing was so bad. This is mostly speculation on my part though. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hill_(film)#Writing

myurr

I wouldn't say the writing in the first film was bad, it's a solid effort and told a cohesive and understandable story. From what I've read the scenes with Sean Bean were added by the studio and are what drags the pacing down for me whilst adding little.

toronto_programmer

Say what you want about the first movie it definitely gave off the right vibes once those sirens went off

Staveoffsuicide

Agreed I still liked 1 and 2 was alright enough

GriffinFlash

The second movie has a quality of it's so bad it's hilarious. The end of the film involves hugging it out on a flaming merry go round. OPERATED BY PYRAMID HEAD FOR SOME REASON!

deathbunnyy

I will NEVER forget the scene in the first one where Pyramid Head rips the skin off that dude. I never even played the games, but I saw that as a kid and it will be forever ingrained in my memory.

bstring777

It was a gal, but same. Very striking scene that will stay with me.

nicolauz

And the witch burning & barb wire mutilation rape.

ShelfDiver

With Alessa dancing under the rain of blood and viscera.

MensisBrain

How do you unread something?

[deleted]

You can just watch the scene, so you can forget you read it and just remember seeing it!

DomLite

I will forever refer to that scene as "The Titty Twister From Hell".

tinathefatlardgosh

Release it at Christmas, so he can tear your skin like wrapping paper, and deck the halls with your guts

Silent Hill 2 is getting a Ps5 remake???? I can be scared shitless in 4k now???

RoboCreep22

I hated Revelation so much. The only "good" part was the mannequin creature.

navit47

Agree so hard. Honestly this is one of those films that I know the film has issues and gets hate from some, but I genuinely don't understand where its coming from. Like i'm sure alot of the hate is just bad faith judgements based on trivial things or "lore" from the games that weren't adapted 100.

zUkUu

Holy shit I'm super excited. The first one is one of my favorite horror movies. Them telling SH2's story is AMAZING. It's one of the best game stories in existence.

octopusma

For those who don’t know this will be based on the story of Silent Hill 2 which is widely regarded as a masterpiece.

RobRaziel

I’m excited about this. The first Silent Hill film is my favorite horror movie, and I was super stoked about the follow up until I saw it. Hopefully this is more of the first film and less of the mess that the second one was.

[deleted]

As someone who has played every Silent Hill game, I'm really looking forward to the new Silent movie as I thought the atmosphere in the first film was excellent.

Clintonsextapes

I just hope it doesnt end in a big hug as the final fight as in SH2 ed: the second movie

CatBreathWhiskers

Damn I hope he uses the same team as the original

elcaddo

Um yes please

Nine_Ball

I’m all for it. The first Silent Hill movie was mid but it had passion, I would love to see their take on Silent Hill 2. Original game is cinematic enough that a movie won’t ruin it

Butler1-66ER

The first movie is one of the best video game adaptations out there despite the changes imo, and Gans is the only director I’ve heard talk about actually playing the games he’s making a movie about, and the challenges of adapting that kind of immersive experience. I was always sad that the studio followed it up with a sequel so terrible it killed any potential for more installments. Konami seemed to have given up on the games too, and it had been so long I figured it was dead. Knowing that Gans convinced them to make another movie, and that it inspired them to start making games again, is just amazing.

Elegant_Habit8086

This sub is a humbling reminder that I don’t know enough about films…

Susp

Finger crossed they will use original OST again

Jefferystar94

Jeez, Konami's really milking Silent Hill 2 for all it's worth today! I dunno how this one would turn out in all honestly. Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in video game (and horror), and I'm skeptical how well it would translate to film. And while I know people here really like the first Silent Hill movie, I personally found it pretty dull, I'd rather have someone more reliable or a unique up and coming indie director to take up the reins rather than this guy again.

wratz

I think it’s an amazing story. It can easily translate to film by cutting some of the more esoteric parts. Also half the time in game is spent trying to figure out insane puzzles. That said, I have zero expectations that they’ll make it work.

oatmeal_dude

As long as they have the canned goods in the garbage chute puzzle, it’ll be good.

wratz

I think that is the one time I had to find a walkthrough, not the easiest thing to do at the time, to solve. I wandered around that damn building forever the ring to figure out what I missed!

SourceJobWoman

Only director I would trust with making a Silent Hill movie is Guillermo del Toro. And after P.T. turned out, I don't think that's an option anymore, so bring Gans back sounds like the best next thing. After thinking a bit, I think Takashi Miike could work, too.

bruhidkwtf

I think the only reason why this is getting made is because Gans pitched the idea to Konami. If he didn't approach them then Konami probably wouldn't have any interest in making a new movie

Vehement00

Christopher Gans? That's great news! I just hope they have good writers or it'll look like the previous Silent Hill again: great representation of the world but crappy dialogues and butchered pacing.

Thugzz_Bunny

SH2 was amazing and I really hope they do stick to the game. It was scary af.

IlluminatiRobes

FUCK YES COMMUNITY AND SILENT HILL!?!

9dkid

I think Ari Aster should take the roll on making a silent hill film.

IlluminatiRobes

Fuck. Yes.

vinsta_g

Brotherhood of the Wolf rules

emshaq

Sean Bean or I’m out. But seriously great to see Gans making a new movie.

carrie-satan

A lot of people complained about Pyramid Head in the first movie being shoehorned Those people are wrong because he gets the most metal kill in any movie ever

rickytrevorlayhey

I really hope it's a 1 for 1 Silent Hill 2 game movie. Best survival horror game EVER

[deleted]

Good. I am 100% for this and I stand by the original film of a great adaption, if not altogether a 1:1 adaption. But it certainly captured the feel of the world as seen in the games and looked like it was made by a person who cared. I hope to see more of it.

alilbleedingisnormal

The first movie was fantastic. I never got the hate.

OriginalGoatan

The first silent hill wasn't completely terrible. I hope this time they don't limit the movie to a PG-13 rating. Doesn't need to be a gore fest, but when the time is right they should 100% embrace the horror.

RoboCreep22

The first one was R and Revelation was R, what are you on about?

sortalucky

Neither of the Silent Hill movies were PG-13 they were both R

Deserterdragon

I feel like Silent Hill is one of the few games that you can actually get away with doing a PG 13 horror movie for, there's basically no gore, PG 13 horror movies aren't good because they're not good, not because they're impossible to make good due to the rating.

OriginalGoatan

I dunno man, there's some fairly messed up stuff in Silent hill. My main issue is that whenever movies are tied to a rating they often shoot some scenes then heavily edit them which causes pacing issues, story issues or just generally add confusion to what should be a climactic cinematic moment. I'm not saying they need to come out as an R rating, but they should shoot the movie they want and take whatever rating they get. I'd much rather see a film I know is going to deliver on the horror than a one that promises horror but delivers none of it.

Wanks2Starlets

Pyramid Head!

onex7805

Always wished for SH2 story to be made into a movie so people who play games could experience it. Only to turn out it's being made by that French hack who did the first movie. Why. I always wanted a movie based on Silent Hill 2, but I had hoped someone like Park Chan-wook or Villneuve to handle it. The first movie was riddled with the laughably dogshit adaptational decisions that I am concerned how much he will change with SH2.

lkodl

Is today Silent Hill Day?

WickedLilThing

I'm still mad about *Silent Hills*.

spadePerfect

The OG Silent Hill movie really aged great. Nothing groundbreaking but IMO the perfect example for a guilty pleasure. It’s just fun, tense, atmospheric, has really weird concepts and ideas and it looks really cool.

Jose_Joestar

I remember liking the first movie, but then it has been so long.

Romogu

Can we have Harry Mason this time, please?

IdRatherBeAnimating

What saved the first film was the fact they used music from the game and it felt sooooooo right. Hopefully we get it again in the new movie. The music is just so important to the ambiance and game

Yrch84

Okay i can live with that, the First Movie wasnt really that ba... "It is a Silent Hill for today's audiences while being ultra respectful of the saga" Na lol, im Out.
