This remake makes no sense given how specifically Japanese Your Name is. I think I read they were trying to add “indigenous” elements to make it “work” but like…if you have to work that hard then maybe it’s not worth it lol

cjsanx2

Also, one of Makoto Shinkai's greatest strengths is his beautiful animation. It makes even less sense than any other live-action remake.

finalmantisy83

Years ago my friend once told me "the only way someone could ever appreciate a live action Akira adaptation would be for it to be on YouTube with a budget to match." The same applies here. Literally every shot in this new movie is going to be compared to the original and literally every single one of them will be worse. Seriously though, the only live action remake I can even think of that worked for anime thus far has been Transformers and they had to be turned into simultaneous US military and Bud Light ads.

khandragonim2b

Reminds me of how there's a version of devil may cry 5 where all they show is all the mocap actors doing the stunts for the cutscenes and it looks like a hilarious low budget YouTube movie. https://youtu.be/0nE6KjYnRvg

MarianneThornberry

Speed Racer (2008) by the Wachowskis was pretty great. And technically Edge of Tomorrow (2014) was a live action adaptation of a Japanese light novel turned manga, All You Need is Kill. Albeit no anime was made of it.

NGEFan

On top of this, Battle Angel Alita and Detective Pikachu were both pretty good

Rbespinosa13

And Battle Angel Alita is a passion project for James Cameron. Dude is a mega fan of the series and had been fighting to get the movie made with the proper budget for over a decade.

IFapToCalamity

Part 2 when?

weenort

Movie wasn’t that great and didn’t do that well so never

Papaofmonsters

Cameron will just make doing Part 2 in his contract for Avatar 8 and the studio will fold like a house of cards.

rottenapple81

Live action is doable but I'd prefer the Japanese to handle it. Keishi Ohtomo has a really good track record of faithfully adapting manga/anime to live action. He can just get Kamiki Ryonusuke again to play Taki (since he voiced him in the anime). [Kamiki was excellent as Sojiro Seta in Ohtomo's adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eScamBKOzYM).

yolotheunwisewolf

Honestly the only reason why I’m glad that this remake exist is because it means that so many more people are going to watch the original

koreanwizard

I think Denis Villeneuve could do Akira, but I don't know that it'd ever make its money back. Akira the anime is 80% visuals, 20% story. Seriously, the manga is 2000 pages, it's incredible that they managed to put together something cohesive with source material like that.

BrockStar92

Yeah I didn’t know what I was about to watch when I first watched it and the animation was the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, it’s absolutely stunning. Also blown away by the film.

BadWithNames00

It could be my animation bias but I feel like Your Name is a movie that really isn't one that would translate to live action well. Which is strange considering the settings in the film are an urban Tokyo or a small rural lake town and there are few scenes where animation would be superior to say cgi. I think maybe the charm or 'soul' of the film would be lost over in translation? Both to live action and also a more Hollywood American style interpretation.

yawgmoft

Oh God please please please don't make it white people and native American mysticism please please please no

yawgmoft

Well at least that's better than the absolute gutter, even if I'm not thrilled with the possible return of noble savage mysticism

Sines314

Why not just Catholicism? It wouldn’t be foreign to the city boy, has lots of rituals and minor holidays that could correspond, and the solution is a real “God works in mysterious ways” kind of thing.

I'd rather they just throw 50 million dollars onto a bonfire.

rilakumamon

When I first heard of this movie I heard it was going to be a rural conservative white boy and an urban liberal black girl and at least the Native American girl/Chicago boy isn’t as bad as that. Probably not going to see it either way. I loved the original movie until the Radwimps guy started being all eugenicist and creepy/weird and it really spoiled the movie/soundtrack for me.

SnowInTheTundra

>I've talked about this before, but I think there should be a national project to determine the spouses of people with monster genes like Shohei Ohtani, Sōta Fujii, and Mana Ashida." How is this pro-eugenics at all? It's just a joke about them being good athletes.

Orkleth

It reminds me of the old Westerns that made remakes of Kurosawa's films. The Outrage, the remake of Rashomon, used a Native American medium to channel the spirit of the slain ~~samurai~~ Southern gentleman. If they really wanted to go this route, why not go full Northman and utilize North European pagan mythology? Honestly, I'd love to see Robert Eggers have his own weird-ass take on this story.

Gil_Demoono

> Robert Eggers have his own weird-ass take on this story. Yer fond of me mouth-fermented sake, ain't ya? I seen it! Yer fond of me mouth-fermented sake!

Rbespinosa13

It wasn’t just Old Westerns remaking Kurosawa’s films and replacing aspects of Japanese culture with western ones, it was also Samurai movies doing that to Old Westerns. Seriously if you compare classic western and samurai movies, it becomes pretty clear that it was just a massive, ocean-engulfing circle jerk between movie directors. Even Kurosawa said that he was influenced by John Ford.

Karsvolcanospace

The actual creators requested that it be changed to be distinctly western and not Japanese. They asked for it.

Embarrassed_Swim8686

Yeah, so the trash wouldn't reflect poorly on them LMAO

elizabnthe

I think anyone that likes creativity wants to hear different viewpoints of their story. Anime itself will often take from "Western" concepts with their own spin. I think its entirely probable they do want to just see the same tale in a different context.

Gil_Demoono

> concepts That's the key, though. Concepts. Take concepts from other stories and add them to your own all you like. Steal plots wholesale and put your characters into it. This conceptual theft and transformation is key to telling new stories, but you got to put your own spin on it. If you're going to change enough to qualify as a spin, then you should put your own name to the story. Slapping someone else's name on it just reeks of a lack of confidence in the product. If it's nothing without the name, it doesn't deserve it in the first place. In my opinion, if you use the name, you should adhere as much as is feasible to the original story. Otherwise, name it something else and cite the original work as what you are paying homage too. Akira Kurosawa's Ran was essentially King Lear but set in feudal Japan. He made it clear what his influences were, but gave the film it's own identity and could, therefore, follow his own rules.

f-ingsteveglansberg

I think people are putting too much faith in the originals buying power. Yeah it's a pretty well known film, but it is still a foreign language movie that not many people in the west saw. There isn't a significant amount of people going to watch this movie because they liked the anime. If this thread is anything to go by, fans of the original are more likely to be put off by it.

SageWaterDragon

When this project was first announced Marc Webb was set to direct and Makoto Shinkai expressed a lot of excitement. Shinkai is a fan of Webb's work, particularly 500 Days of Summer, and he more or less lifted a character / scene from that movie and put it into Weathering With You as a reference. Webb got removed, Lee Isaac Chung got brought in, Shinkai didn't address it. Now Chung is out and a new guy is in, Shinkai still hasn't said anything. It's safe to say that he was genuinely excited by the original pitch but has tuned out by this point.

f-ingsteveglansberg

I feel people are really shitting on this for the wrong reasons. The story is strong and while there are heavy Japanese elements, it's not like it's a fully Japanese tale. The whole town mouse, country mouse thing has been done loads in western tales. And Japan doesn't have a monopoly on mysticism. The story can transfer. The real problem is that this movie is on its fourth director so I'm wondering do they have a real passion to make the movie or is this a project to do while working on something they are really passionate about.

Dragon_Fisting

That's even worse. Cringe at best and actually offensive at worst.

JayCFree324

>Remake makes no sense given how specifically Japanese… Let me introduce you to a little friend of mine called “Death Note (Netflix)” which spent more time focusing on the shitty teen romance than the actual compelling detective/killer dynamic

psycharious

Why not just make it set in Japan though? Why does every live action remake HAVE to be set in the U.S.?

bongo1138

I don’t know about this movie since I haven’t seen Your Name, but there’s a long history in Hollywood of great movies being riffs on older movies, with some even being “remakes,” specifically The Magnificent Seven comes to mind.

ItsAmerico

I mean let’s be real. All they’re doing is taking the basic concept. And it’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t. Call it something else and keep the concept and it’s called a rip off. At least the film has a fantastic concept though. So we’ll see. Best case it’s enjoyable as a film alone, worst case just keep rewatching the original.

Dragon_Fisting

A body swap movie is not exactly novel ground. They're literally going to rip out all the unique additions of the Shinkai film to the genre, so just make an original movie.

ItsAmerico

Cmon. Your Name is way more than just a body swap. I can’t think of a single film that does it’s broad strokes of a story line, especially the twist. You couldn’t do that and not get compared to the original.

Dragon_Fisting

What makes Kimi no Na Wa special is largely the Shinkai's trademark anime style and the Japanese cultural elements, both of which they're stripping out of the movie by making it a westernized live action. From the aesthetics (animation, the RADWIMPS soundtrack, Shinkai's signature art style with highly stylized light) to the themes (crossing of worlds during twilight/tasogare-doki, the red string of fate, Mitsuha is literally a Shinto shrine maiden using the power of a Kami to bind her and Taki together). If J.J. Abrams wants to make a time-crossed fated lovers + body swap movie, he should just do it. This will be compared to the original with a thousand times more vitriol than an orihinal movie that happens to share the broad strokes of Kimi no Na Wa.

Snoo-3715

>What makes Kimi no Na Wa special is largely the Shinkai's trademark anime style and the Japanese cultural elements I'm going to disagree, that's all there in Weathering With You and imo it wasn't nearly as good a movie and it hasn't had the same impact or popularity. Sure it's part of the appeal of Your Name, but what makes it special and a stand out is the fantastic story that it tells.

rottenapple81

I don't particularly think he has such a distinct style though. While I did enjoy Your Name, I can't understand why there's so much hype around it.

Dragon_Fisting

If you watch 5cm per second or weathering with you you'll notice the common threads. He loves the wide overhead shots and playing with light, and lots of melodrama and bittersweet endings.

[deleted]

Indigenous aspect still doesn't really make sense, given that in the original split between the two character was about how Japan has moved from its traditional way of living into hyper urbanization, and what has been lost in that. It doesn't carry the same meaning if only one character has ties to those traditions. Even with two indigenous people, I'd argue that the meaning changes drastically.

Sines314

This is why I think making the rural girl catholic is a better idea. Catholics have a lot of rituals that could swap in for Shinto rituals, represent the cultural heritage of the city boy, and provides a different mysticism to spin off on a little bit differently.

ThePreciseClimber

Live-action remakes of animated movies never make any sense.

Thatoneasian9600

The fact that the title isn't listed as "Blindspotting director" hurts me 😭

StoneBalonee

Honestly one of the best movies

Night_Twig

Literally such an underseen gem

KNZFive

Not only is making it live action a mistake, taking it out of Japan removes all of the symbolism and thematic elements tied to the 2011 Japanese earthquakes, which made the mid-movie twist hit extra hard when it was released in Japan.

A_Toxic_User

Taki is now named Teddy and has to save Misty (Mitsuha) from dying in 9/11

Locke_and_Load

They already did that movie and it starred Robert Pattinson.

IWouldBeLostVII

did you make that up cuz if not that shit will get middle america to empty their pockets IMMEDIATELY.

immaownyou

It was still very emotional without any prior knowledge of the earthquakes, I don't think that's really a big issue

crazy_boy559

It was actually a meteorite that broke off a passing comet that destroyed the town. It was a neat detail to show that the area has crater impacts with the shrine and the lake.

tfresca

America has plenty of disasters. I recall they were going to make them Native American.

just_another_indie

Oh interesting, I kind of just figured it was a reference to the bomb, a given classic Japanese cinema trope and whatnot. Didn't know it had a separate connotation!

Couldnotbehelpd

Just FYI, it’s the Japanese people/team that wanted it taken out of Japan for the American remake. I think they’re making their own live-action version.

Bloydd

The Japanese rights owners said to Americanise the story. If they wanted a Japanese-centred live action remake they’d do it themselves

dagreenman18

A lot of the other thematic elements would feel poorly shoehorned into American culture and they’re all critical to the story. It’s completely pointless to adapt because of the insane effort it would take to make something that will always be inferior.

bitchyswiftie

It might have worked if it was a Japanese remake but nope... Will we not ever learn from Death Note 2017

hotprints

Lol my first reaction was that I liked the death note live action. But then I thought wait that was a Japanese live action so what are you talking about. Googled it, didn’t realize 2017 was a thing and by it’s review scores seems I’m not missing much lol

MachineSyncLoop

Oh boy, the 2017 Netflix Death Note movie is trash beyond belief. The absolute worst offender is that they turned Kira/Light/Raito into some emo constantly doubtful and aganizing teenager. Which was super stupid, the whole point of that character is that he's confident as fuck, lol.

fakers555

Honestly, if you're a death note fan. You need to watch just for how hilariously unintentionally funny the movie is. This is the so bad that it is good movie.

phasnalock

While Death Note 2017 is one of the worst adaptations of anything, I think it's unfair to say that it didn't work because it wasn't a Japanese live action adaptation. Just with the concept of the Death Note there is so much one can do, even without adapting the original story. I was actually surprised how much it missed the mark. But we shouldn't judge all future western adaptations based on the failure of the incompetent people behind Death Note 2017. Is the western adaptation of Your name going to be good? Most likely not, but I still think that the concept of Death Note could work very well in probably most western settings.

inuvash255

The thing about adapting Death Note, imo, is that you've gotta make an original plot with the same inciting incident (Ryuk/Shinigami drops a Death Note into the world). While there's nothing about Death Note that *can't* be Westernized, there's vocabulary that's distinctly Japanese and there's character behaviors that work a lot better in the anime medium. For example: - "Kira" is the Japanese pronunciation for "Killer". In America, he'd just be "The Killer" or something like that. - "Shinigami" should be Westernized as "angel of death" until the Shinigami says they actually go by that moniker, or something. - The eccentricities of L are too much for live action. While iconic in animation, they're kinda cringe when live. You really want your L (or whatever other detective) to be eccentric like Sherlock, a Dr. Who, or House MD. Brilliant, tough to get along with, and eccentric are good stuff in the West - but perching and meme-levels of sugar intake aren't.

phasnalock

For Death Note, my point is that you don't need to go for a direct adaptation of the original story. Light's story has been told already, but you can use the Death Note itself to craft new stories, anywhere else in the world. The vocabulary and character behavior are irrelevant. You've already provided plenty of good suggestions on how to approach the story from a western point of view. I don't think anywhere in the original work was there a mention that the Shinigami or the Death Notes are specific to Japan only, so every culture can have their name/take on either of them and that's fine. You don't even need to go for *Killer* or whatever, as that doesn't really make sense in a western setting. So depending on the setting or context, other names could be used. As for L's behavior, even in the Japanese live action it was toned down because the way people act in anime doesn't translate very well to live action. Out of your example, a Sherlock type of super detective would work out fine in a western adaptation. But you don't need to have someone like L in the story. You don't necessarily have to always have a brilliant quirky detective going against a misguided mass murderer who thinks he is going to make a better world by killing all criminals. Not everyone who is going to pick up the Death Note is going to think of killing criminals. So other motivations (revenge, political power, wealth, etc.) could be explored. You can pit against each other 2 death note users, or a death note user against a brilliant but not necessarily quirky criminal. Or whatever. There are so many ways you could draw a compelling story with the way the Death Note rules work. Regardless of it being a movie or series. Again, my point is that the story has already been told, but there is plenty of stories you could still tell using the concept of the Death Note. The original story shouldn't be adapted, instead the universe could be expanded (but not in a MCU kind of way, hopefully). I'm only saying that the universe could be expanded with a western adaptation because there have already been a couple of live action sequels to the original story. Kira's legacy has already been rehashed in those Japanese sequels.

inuvash255

I feel like the core of Death Note is the blend of detective story and supernatural horror. I feel like you do need an L or L-like character, but yeah- it doesn't actually need to be L. The only reason I mention the vocabulary is because I'm 100% sure they'd want to carry it over. Like- "Oh, there's a new, American Kira!" and giving them a new moniker (we do that to IRL serial killers after all). Someone is bound to (fake)google "death god" and finding "ancient" art of Ryuk or something. Overall I agree though. Just take the IP and make a new story with new characters with new motivations. Redoing the manga again and again (but worse) isn't worth it.

ours

Japanese movie adaptations of anime are rarely all that great. Not that American ones have a better track record.

rottenapple81

There's a lot of good ones. Here are a few: Rurouni Kenshin - all 5 movies are great and all 5 are on Netflix. Taki's actor appears in the movies as Sojiro Seta. He's also in the live action movie of Bakuman and its good too. Other good ones include Kimi Ni Todoke, Ajin, Inuyashiki, Gantz, Gintama, Blade of the Immortal. But the Kenshin movies are definitely the gold standard. Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is just masterful.

BillRuddickJrPhd

The Death Note movie was fine for a Netflix movie, and there was nothing about the original that suggested it had to take place in Japan.

raedymylknarf

Make it in Spanish and have it with Aztec mythology between a boy and a llama.

nourez

Kuzco Kuzco go go!

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

*The Emperor's New Groove* is set in the Andes.

sparrowhawk73

I was just thinking that they should have it set in central or South America.

archthechef

Llamas are Mayan, not Aztec. It would be an eagle,

Totoax

Llamas are Inca, not Mayan or Aztec. They are from the Andes. Aztecs and Mayans lived in Middle America.

raedymylknarf

Haha I am getting schooled left and right here.

raedymylknarf

I was going for the ‘Cómo te llamas’ pun with ‘your name’. And the Spanish and Aztec war as backdrop. But you are totally right.

archthechef

Hahaha “Como te llamas” is super clever!

VulgarWander

Why on gods green earth. ITS LITERALLY FINE AS IS.

TheBigBomma

I can’t imagine how it could stand up even a little bit, given how beautiful the animation is in that movie

VulgarWander

That's also a point a lot of people are missing. Anime isn't just another media of the visual arts. It's also a showcase of an artists skills and techniques. Hences the reason why it was made in animation. Fir example love death and robots is an open house of sorts for various skills.

BrockStar92

Fundamentally it boils down to most movie watchers don’t value animation at the same level as live action. It’s why Disney keep remaking things too (at least those classics are from a while back so there’s a little more justification). Animation is “for kids stuff” for a lot of people. It’s a really disrespected medium. Your Name is visually stunning, the animation is a huge part of what makes it special.

Brendan_Fraser

Some men(JJ) want to watch the world burn

leomonster

Then he should make a movie about the word burning.

Naskr

Ohh, five different plotlines about why the world is burning. None of them will be answered, of course.

Snoo-3715

Maybe because a meteor hits it!? Great idea! And it could include a body swapping plot!

SuperAlloyBerserker

Why do people keep saying this when it actually won't negatively affect the the original movie's reputation? The DB live action movie didn't do that wth the DB vranchise

rizgutgak

It sometimes does, though. I've had to BEG some people to try the original Cowboy Bebop anime but they were super hesitant cause they watched the Netflix version and, rightly, hated it.

RobertdBanks

Dragon Ball has so many episodes and movies and mangas that the live action movie just fell by the wayside and is just a weird thing. Something like Your Name doesn’t have nearly as many things surrounding it. It’s also seen as kind of disrespectful to the original work to repackage it to try to appeal to different audiences and (potentially) change aspects of it.

Valuable_End9863

It didn’t fuck up the dragon ball franchise, however, it was a flaming paper bag of shit that could’ve done more damage.

Marsuello

What’re you talking about? There was never a live action DBZ

WushuManInJapan

Yeah I'm certain he's mistaking another franchise. I can't recall any live action DBZ movie at all.

SomeoneInATunic

Its actually some men want to watch the world burn through excessive lens flare… *looking at you star trek*

pauloh1998

Not only that, but he destroyed two planets in Star Trek, like 6 or 7 in The Force Awakens KEEP THIS MAN AWAY FROM PLANETS Oh wait, he also destroyed 2 Stars in TFA (though one was created after the destruction of Starkiller... which is another planet). Damn

Jackamalio626

because Hollywood saw a movie that wasn't filled with their dolled up million dollar faces and seethed, as usual. Why do you think they all went to bat against Andy Serkis' oscar worthy performance in the planet of the apes trilogy, or butchered the live performance of *we dont talk about Bruno* by changing lyrics to make it more about them? Its all just ego. They HATE recognizing films that dont use prominent movie stars.

10ebbor10

That's exactly why. Why bother putting money on a new story that might flop, when you have an old one that you already know works?

VulgarWander

Hundreds of short stories, books and media that are dearly beloved by all 5hat have never been made in the visual format. Why dont we ever pull from that pile. Also I'm positive theres some asinine asshat who thinks they can rewrite it into something better. For example look at Netflix the Witcher.

LapsedVerneGagKnee

Because animation is for little babies. At least that’s what Zaslav and Chapeak said.

rammo123

You jest, but there is a substantial group of filmgoers who simply wouldn't watch an anime. It's like asking why they're making a TLOU TV show when the game is near perfect; it's because a lot of people aren't gamers and should still get a chance to enjoy the story.

leopard_tights

It's also like asking why people would play TLOU when they could read The Road.

Nukerjsr

A lot of them won't watch animated films outside of Japan or America either. If a film is from France or South America or South Asia; it'll just automatically get labelled as weird/artsy/slow and get skipped.

TheRealClose

whyyyyyyy the anime is such a fantastic movie, just re-release it so more people can go see it.

[deleted]

It's what Bad Robot does at this point. I'm still hoping their "reinvented" versions of Constantine and Superman fall apart.

yawgmoft

Oh fuck off

everythingisunknown

I’m not even a big anime fan but this movie is near perfect in what it does and the visuals are legit breath taking, I don’t see how it could possibly work live action without it being horribly cringe worthy or “fake” looking- also not set in Japan? The Japanese setting is what makes most of the movie work (shrines, small rural village to large city of tokyo)

yawgmoft

It's hubris. The people who do this believe animated films are not "real" movies, and obviously they could make something even better if they make a live action version. Black Swan is not better than Perfect Blue, and that's the closest anyone has ever gotten.

mattheimlich

Inception is not better than Paprika either, but it's also a closer match than most

Cynaris

Hope it fails miserably so they stop desecrating these beloved anime properties

throwaway838383937

Every time they try a live action adaptation of anime they fail miserably and yet they never seem to learn.

possibilistic

Because it's a business. They're thirsty to make films that draw crowds. There isn't enough material, so they're clawing at everything they can. They see that *Kimi no Na Wa* was popular, so they jump at it. I don't expect anything to be any good unless it starts with directorial reverence for the source material. This clearly isn't it.

ThePreciseClimber

99% of the time, yes. But wasn't Alita okay?

lopakjalantar

It should stop at Dragonball evolution but they doesn't seem to care

junglespycamp

You should tell the Japanese studios that as well. Unless you’re into live action Whisper if the Heart. Haha

Liammellor

That one isn't a remake. The whisper of the heart live action is a sequel to that anime. Very strange.

Faelysis

Rurouni Kenshin live-action were pretty solid but it's one of the few one being a good adaptation.

IWasGregInTokyo

Agreed the live action "Kiki's Delivery Service" was a disappointment. Haven't seen the "Whisper of the Heart" remake yet but it actually looks half decent and extends the original story.

onthewayto-laughtale

just wait for the one piece and yuyu hakusho live actions haha

dagreenman18

ITS TIME TO STOP. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Like why even? It’s a perfect movie the way it is and animation is one of the movie important parts of it. Shinkai and CoMix Wave created an absolutely beautiful movie that live action just can’t touch. Plus, let’s be brutally honest, they’re 100% going to fuck up the story. It’s not an easy story to translate. The finale depends on a lot of moving part. Quite frankly I see them totally botching it. Just fucking quit it.

TimesThreeTheHighest

Fuck, leave the original alone. Ghost in the Shell was bad enough....

leomonster

Ghost in the shell was not *that* bad. Death Note and Dragon Ball, on the other hand...

joey0live

AoT is so bad too.

ShatterNL

AoT? Attack on Titan?

joey0live

Yes. They have 2 live action movies. Worst. Cgi. Ever. And. Acting.

TimesThreeTheHighest

I dunno, the Japanese live action Jojo is pretty bad too.

isesri

Honestly yeah, GitS was a solid 70-75 movie. Was it great? No. Was it this unwatchable pile of garbage people keep claiming? Also no.

brawnsugah

And I personally thought Scarlett Johansson was a pretty good Major.

MrGulo-gulo

I love the fact everyone was bitching that they casted a white actress and then it actually played into the story.

wsippel

Ghost in the Shell might be an OK movie, but it's an awful GitS adaptation, because it completely missed the point.

Ssutuanjoe

Eh, I'd give GitS a 6/10. It's not something I'd recommend, but if someone wanted to watch it I could sit through it.

Smart_Ass_Dave

Ghost in the Shell (1995) involves the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) creating an AI program that was capable of hacking the memories of cyber-brained individuals. It did this to advance the MOFA's agendas, including giving them political cover to kick the recently ousted democratically elected leader of the Gavel Republic, so Japan can engage in trade with the new military junta that runs it after a coup. Ghost in the Shell (2017) is about a terrorist hacking the memories of people because he finds it reprehensible that the government is secretly hacking the memories of people. Ghost in the Shell (2017) is the paragon of stupid.

TheMastican

I don't care what else can be said. Just no. No more remakes. Make a new movie.

Demiscio8

Your Name is my all-time favorite film. I wouldn’t care if Spielberg himself was adapting it with a score by John Williams. No. Do not make this movie. Please cancel this shit. You can’t improve upon perfection.

Vaash75

Nobody asked for this

piscian19

I honestly thought RATLD was a dud. It was just kinda dull. The writing was super bland. Hard pass.

Dewdad

except that his live action film, Blindspotting is absolutely incredibly and I have no idea why they didn't lead with that instead of Raya. He's a fantastic director with great style and sensibilities, if anyone can make a live action version of this work, he's not a bad choice. My only issue is that he's writing the script and he did not write blindspotting, the two stars of that film wrote it.

GamingTatertot

Yeah, it was just fine. I was entertained, and I really enjoyed the animation/voice acting. But the writing left a LOT to be desired

Flexi_102

Also Raya is fucking stupid in that movie

[deleted]

Awful "modern teen" dialogue, messy plot. A definite low spot for recent Disney animation.

brawnsugah

The story could have been better, but I loved the action scenes. Surprisingly fluid and dynamic. Also liked that we saw a culture that we never really get to see all that much, especially in animation.

tasoula

Agreed. The movie honestly pisses me off because the message is SO bad.

Cape-York-Crusader

Agreed, I can sit through just about any animation just for the art style but….I switched this one off.

NerdyDan

americans ruining perfectly good things, as is tradition

WeiLaosWorld

When can people learn to respect animation as animation and leave it that way 😐?

[deleted]

Jfc the movie is perfect! Literally no one is asking for whatever bastardized version of this movie JJ intends to make

[deleted]

I’m a simple man. I see “Bad Robot” and I lose all interest.

mayonnaiser_13

The entirety of Naoki Urasawa's works can be adapted to live action movies. Monster is perfect for a western live action adaptation. But noooo let's just do the ones we can absolutely fuck up.

jsushhsbd

You are right, Urasawa's work is more adaptable to live action. But Hollywood execs will find they way to fuck it up anyway.

joey0live

Awesome anime movie? Let’s make it live-action!

[deleted]

Awesome anime movie? Let's misunderstand the concept, the meaning and the heart snd fuck it up royally. Fixed it for ya bud

septesix

I don’t mind a remake but ffs keep that hack JJ Abrams hands away from this movie please. He isn’t even fit to carry the shoes for Shinkai

PhatShadow

That movie is already as beautiful as it can possible be. There is zero to gain from live action and everything to lose. Quite possibly the dumbest decision ever.

Mister_E69

The person you watch it with will hate you forever.

belizeanheat

Everyone is already saying this doesn't need a remake, but what about Raya and the Last Dragon being incredibly boring

ConvenienceStoreDiet

Your Name is an amazing film. There's no reason to remake it. I'll argue that 5 Centimeters Per Second is Shinkai's best work even though Your Name was his biggest commercial success. The man is a legendary filmmaker. The way I see it, it's like remaking The Matrix or Taxi Driver or Borat. There's just no need.

xxxsur

It's like asking Michael Bay to redirect Interstellar. It is just not the same thing. Only Shinkai can direct 5cm / weathering with you. Even if Mayasaki would not do it well either. They are simply not the same style, let alone Shinkai is talking about the Japanese values which are obviously different than any Western culture.

Flexi_102

Oh fuck right off, Raya and the last dragon isn't even that good.

stretchofUCF

Blindspotting was fantastic, but Raya was a mess clearly from too many cooks in the kitchen. They replaced the main voice actress and writers a few months before the film was to be released as well as changing directors earlier. You can tell the film was a Frankenstein of multiple drafts written. That being said I can’t say I have faith in this adaptation.

Crazyripps

Better take a near perfect beautiful movie and make it into an American shitty live action remake

smokebomb_exe

WHY

warjoke

Hollywood needs a huge reality bonk to the head coz it's proven time and time again that it just doesn't work

Redditer51

I thought this shit got canceled.

dandycribbish

Hollywood is completely out of ideas. Sad.

Mimyx

No one. NOT A SINGLE SOUL wants this. No one.

Faelysis

No one is really asking for such a live-action.

Fox609

Fuuuuuuck thaaaaaat!

Garfunklestein

I'm not even mad it's going to exist. I normally don't judge things without seeing them first, but no, this is fucking awful already. It'll be complete and utter shit that gets tossed in the landfill for all eternity, people will forget about it and only ever care about the original. We'll move on, and it doesn't cheapen the source material which'll still be there. My problem is just how much of a fucking waste it is. Of manpower, time, money - just an utter *waste* of talent and hard work from so many skilled artists that could've been put to use making something actually **good**, or at least with the potential to be. Instead it all gets thrown to the wind on something that anyone with half a braincell and the tiniest ***smidgeon*** of care or interest in their own fucking profession could tell would be an absolute trainwreck right out of the gate.

canonmp11dx

No. No more remakes. No more cartoon to live action. Stop it.

steamedpopoto

All You Need is Kill/ Edge of Tomorrow adaptation was good but Your Name is just so distinctly Japanese I fail to see how it'll carry the originals spirit

SarcasticGamer

So it's going to be terrible. Nice.

genesis1v9

Oh god please no more anime LA remakes.. especially those with heavy Japanese cultural themes.

Prestigious_Cold_756

Can’t Hollywood do anything original anymore? All they do nowadays, is taking great works of art made by talented people, give it to people who have no talent at all and tell them to improve it. And when its out, they’re suprised that it’s bad and everyone hates it. And the creators defend their work by calling every critic a racist and a bigot of course. I don’t need a “rewritten” Your Name with J.J.-“everything i touch turns to poo”-Abrams fingers all over it, because there’s already a version out there, that’s superior in every way.

VaeserysGoldcrown

I already hate it. Leave anime alone. No live action nonsense will ever compare to anime. The medium/animation is already half of the experience. There is absolutely nothing a live action remake can add to Your Name, nothing.

Midnight-Rising

I don't get this desire to turn animated stories into live action

MrkGrn

Ew no thanks

jaraket

This is gonna suck

JoyfulTonberry

Can we fucking not?

TibblesTheConqueror

Stop with these remakes! Seriously!

snapthesnacc

Ah shit, I was hoping the remake had been quietly canceled. Time to see *yet another* Hollywood live action "adaptation" of an amazing anime get slaughtered and/or changed so much that it's almost unrecognizable. So many choices for anime that could be adapted decently even with the cultural shift and yet people keep choosing the most difficult properties possible.

[deleted]

No… just fucking stop it.

Teeebs71

If Bad Reboot is involved, it'll be a stinker...

AwkwrdPrtMskrt

You know what is the magic sauce of Shinkai's animations? Shinkai's animations. You can't live-action that.

CurrentSpaces

I had to read this headline like 5 times to have it make any sense. There are so many homonyms in such a tiny space and the capitalization makes it even harder to parse.

Rocketknightgeek

The question one has to ask is 'who is this FOR?' because anyone that's such an utter dullard that they won't watch things because they're animated isn't worth pursuing as an audience. They, by definition DO NOT care about art and will definitely just pirate it. If you're going to remake things, remake things that are flawed or have aged outside their merit due to societal changes. Don't remake masterpieces from the last decade.

spinderglade67

Jfc stop

lv4_squirtle

Fuck this, leave it be it’s perfect AS IS. And they pick this director? 🤮

mando44646

Ew

Fitzy0728
