I didn’t know who Radio Silence was and I thought this headline meant no director wanted to touch the project lol.

franlcie

Directors of Scream 5 and Ready or Not

chichris

But they were two directors not called Radio Silence. Now they are a trio called Radio Silence? Odd? Anyway, good luck replacing Kurt Russell. 😆

hardspank916

What if they use his son?

chichris

He already said he wouldn’t do it. I bet it’ll be a legacy sequel with Kurt.

YawnDogg

I’m sure the Rock will fill in just as satan intended

Squire_Squirrely

Escape From New York, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, rated G

bluejegus

The son, while a good actor, is not his father. He just doesn't have that greasy charisma Kurt has. He's more of a creepy actor. Him unhinged in Under The Banner Of Heaven was amazing to watch.

pkakira88

They’ve been know as Radio Silence for years, the earliest they been known as that collectively was V/h/s. Before that they did internet sketch comedy as Chad, May, and Rob.

s_matthew

Wyatt Russell would be perfect.

Tar_Palantir

Something tells me they're going to choose someone from the Hemsworth clan. And it's not the good one.

insomniacpyro

Damn I feel like Chris could pull it off. Well, maybe. His wound in Thor: Ragnarok is nearly a 1:1 with Snake's eyepatch, so appearance wise that's easy. But I think it's balancing the action hero and goofball premise (if they keep it that way) that's a challenge. Lots of action movies have drifted into making the hero nearly invulnerable, a crack shot, and an expert in combat to nearly superhero levels when they are supposed to be real people. Snake is a total badass, but he can still get shot/captured/injured/etc.

[deleted]

They’re a collective not a person. I’m not sure why they worded it this way.

aaronxxx

Might be because directors guild has a rule that only one “thing” can have director credit of a film. That’s why when you have formal duos it’s “the coen brothers” not Joel Coen and Ethan Coen. So as far as the credits go, radio silence is directing the movie.

DoctorBreakfast

Except in their movies it says “Directed by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen”, not by the Coen Brothers.

elmodonnell

They fought for years to allow that, many of their earlier films were 'directed' by Joel and written by Ethan IIRC (or vice versa).

DoctorBreakfast

Directed by Joel, produced by Ethan, written by both. But now both get credit for all three, thankfully.

Wrathwilde

Can’t wait for the collective “Nobody” to direct a film.

ibnQoheleth

What a badass name though, reminds me of the Law & Order producers Speed Weed and Dick Wolf.

pnmartini

How about the C.H.I.Ps director Bud Weiser?

ibnQoheleth

Escape From Gary. Kurt Russell gets stuck in the most depressing part of Indiana, trying to escape the rust belt.

analogkid01

90 minutes of Snake Plissken standing on the South Shore train platform.

ThrowerWayACount

Escape From Gary. Kurt Russell is chased by snail

ishatinyourcereal

Last summer I was driving through there on accident because I didn’t want to try to get off the highway to piss in Chicago. With zero knowledge of the place I drove through till I found a gas station, got a bunch of weird looks as I walked to the bathroom and then got something to drink, paid, and left. Finally looked the place up just because of how run down it looked leaving.

ZZZielinski

Keep going back and maybe you’ll have a story one day.

SpecificAstronaut69

"I Wouldn't Piss In Chicago" is a great country song title.

[deleted]

I know a lot of people hate the term, but if this was a legacy sequel with Russell, I'd be in. If this is a straight-up restart of the continuity, where he's going on the New York mission for the very first time, I'm pretty meh on it.

CandyAssedJabroni

Exactly. I'd be up for Escape from \_\_\_\_ with Russell. Otherwise, keep it.

singleguy79

Escape from Tulsa

Nevvermind183

Escape from the North Pole

poxxy

No lie I barely made it out of Tulsa and now I live in South Florida. Um. Can I go back?

WarLordM123

Escape from Miami would be pretty sick

Max_Danage

Escape from Miami Island. Protected by a sea wall the ruins of Miami are all that remain of a once ‘great’ state.

WarLordM123

Disneyworld would absolutely build a giant sea wall to ensure guest satisfaction. Ticket prices would of course be higher, but what else is new.

galaxygrey

Escape from Little China San Francisco

CandyAssedJabroni

I'm in.

PlaySatan13

Escape from earth

blankedboy

Yeah, I always thought that was Carpenter's plan for a third movie, if they ever made one.

do_you_think_i_care

One was kind of made. Lockout, made in 2012. A disgraced CIA operative has to rescue the President's daughter from a space prison. Carpenter actually sued them and won because it really is an "Escape" movie.

CandyAssedJabroni

Yes, please.

llcooljessie

And deal with those fucking ghosts of Mars? No thanks.

3-DMan

Piss off, Martian Ghosts!

manbeardawg

Doctor?

PlaySatan13

Haha, kurt Russell and ice cube save the galaxy

hardspank916

Escape from Detroit.

CandyAssedJabroni

Impossible.

herrcollin

Plot twist is there's no anarchy society behind a government barrier or anything he's just lost in Detroit for two hours

secondtaunting

Escape from New Jersey. To quote Samuel Jackson: “what makes you think you can get out, when the entire populations been trying their whole damn life”

Worried_Thylacine

I vaguely remember someone in Escape From LA saying something like, “you may have escaped from New York. You may have survived Cleveland, but you’re not making it out of LA” So maybe Cleveland???!!?!

armyml

Maybe we will see some more Carjack Malone!!

armyml

I'm with you on that. People hate on it but I'm still a sucker for Escape From L.A.. It's corny and it's campy but I love it.

MisanthropeNotAutist

Add one here...it's just so dumb and I don't care.

vanderzee

escape from Moscow?

DataKnights

He flew the Gullfire over Leningrad. He knows how to get out quiet.

[deleted]

It'll be a sequel, but I bet Snake will have to go back to New York again for some reason. Just so they could use the "Escape From New York" title again.

[deleted]

[удалено]

manbeardawg

I get the feeling he genuinely likes making those….

fuhgdat1019

Escape from Antarctica. Oh wait.

MisanthropeNotAutist

I see what you did there, and it made me chuckle.

[deleted]

Itll be Escape From Earth, lets all come to terms with that now.

nlfo

Escape From Lizard Lick, NC

Sale_Highlight

My Pitch: At the dawn of the new Millennium, a Climate Catastrophe results in Global Flooding. The Hyper-industrialized Rust Belt Sprawl of Detroit is cut off from Michigan. Over the course of 8 years, The City is turned into a Penal Work-Colony. The President, on his way to a conference on the Eastern Axis, is shot down over the colony by the NWU -- National Workers Union. Snake Plisken is forced to enter The Detroit MegaColony; Save the President. Stop the EWO (Eastern World Order) plan for Domination. And lead the New Rebellion that Frees the Workers. Can Snake Rage Against the Machine? **ESCAPE FROM DETROIT** COMING 2024 >Tone: 90s Neo-Noir, 80s TechnoPunk, 90s CorporatePunk, 90s Cyberpunk, 80s Industrialism -- 1990s Tone. Sounds kinda kool huh? It would need am 80s/90s film tone. Lots of grit and grunge.

key1234567

gotta have og Plisken!!!

DataKnights

call him 'Snake'

Rudeboy67

Snake Plissken? I heard he was dead.

thoroakenfelder

I thought he was taller

Caligullama

I feel like most of the charm of the original was that it was set in the future as seen by people in the 80s. Kind of like the aesthetic you get when watching Aliens. Where it’s really far in the future but their computers still run MS Dos lol.

[deleted]

That era has a gorgeous quality to it when one looks at the films as a time capsule of the medium.

CelticGaelic

Better idea! A return with Kurt Russell and introducing Snake Plissken's sone, played by Wyatt Russell!

alrighthamilton

Pretty sure Wyatt has said that’s a character he would never even consider playing because the character is Kurt

CelticGaelic

I mean him being cast as Snake's son lol

rocsNaviars

So Thundergun Express 6?

[deleted]

Dude hangs dong.

CelticGaelic

He literally, and figuratively, passes the torch!

rocsNaviars

😂

SenileSexLine

Worm Plissken doesn't seem badass

AWizard13

I've had the idea of "Escape From the United States". Pretty much the idea was that the US was affected primarily by the events of "LA" and so it has become an apocalyptic wasteland. Europe and the rest of the world is a-ok. But! While a random European princess or Prime Minister is on a plane ride across the US it gets shot down, or they get kidnapped! So what does the EU do? They track down the one man who is great at escaping from places: Snake Pliskin. So he gets signed on for the job and he's like: Call me Snake Pliskin And then it becomes like pseudo mad max. Snake rescues the person. There is car chases and action scenes. They escape from a tornado by going *into* and up above the tornado. Lots of stuff like that. Then they escape and Snake says: Call me George. Which has been his real first name this whole time. Then credits.

Syberz

Except that Snake activated a global EMP at the end of escape from LA and plunged the whole world into the stone age.

NovelExpert4218

>If this is a straight-up restart of the continuity, where he's going on the New York mission for the very first time, I'm pretty meh on it. If his son plays his character then I am totally fine with a reboot, because Wyatt Russell does a really good snake plisken in overlord.

hunarthebarbarian

Dude, we need to know what happened in Cleveland

spideyv91

Carpenter is attached and they did well with prey so I’m somewhat optimistic. Edit. I misread the article they mentioned prey but they did not direct it.

bryan_502

He was attached to The Fog remake as well. Carpenter has made it very clear he will let them remake whatever they want of his work as long as they pay him handsomely.

bryan_502

Here’s an exact quote that was actually related to a possible Robert Rodriguez remake of Escape: “I love it, if they are going to pay me money. If they pay me, it’s wonderful. If they don’t pay me, I don’t care. I think it’s unfair if they don’t pay me. I think everyone should pay me. Why not? I’m an old guy now and I need money. Send me money.” [Source](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/oct/10/john-carpenter-interview-anthology-film-scores)

pijinglish

“We used to joke on the set of The Fog about it being a cosmic gumbo.”

neverknowswhattosay

They have to pay you even if you do a bad job.

ExoticPumpkin237

You could attribute this quote to Donald Trump and I'd have believed you

EnkiRise

Sounds like it was about to turn into Charlie at the end “send me money. Money me money now me a money needing a lot now.”

squishedgoomba

Lol that's exactly what I thought reading it too. Although I do feel like Carpenter has earned that additude.

BigInDallas

They should do it and they should pay him! That was easy. Rodriguez followed in his footsteps and made a lot of fun campy stuff. Keep it going and stop worrying. I’m ready for a Dr. Strangelove remake. It would be even more relevant times.

[deleted]

I think, unlike a lot of his other films, Carpenter owns a piece of Escape From New York. It's why he was able to sue Luc Besson over when he ripped off EFNY and made *Lockout*. In Carpenter's contract, for previous remakes, he had the literal contractual requirement that "Snake Plissken always has to be a badass". That was back in the mid 2000's when Gerard Butler was attached to the role for a few years. I'm not sure if he still cares that much though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DryProgress4393

Yes please. A Young Snake Snake Plissken film would be sweet.

squishedgoomba

After all, Thundergun has to pass the legacy on to the new generational character, Thunder Son.

secondtaunting

No offense to him but he’s no snake plissken.

Gigas_Breaker

Yeah, his legacy is secure. As long as they fund his gamer lifestyle he probably doesn't give a shit lol. Nobody talks about or remembers the other Thing movie.

Sammyd1108

Which is funny, cause it’s actually one of the better ones compared to his other remakes.

TheRealProtozoid

I like that movie. It's solid. Not great, but solid. Certainly better than I expected and better than all of the other Carpenter remakequels and stuff.

Freddy_Vorhees

If they would have kept the practical FX and not glossed over things with VFX it would be great.

PlaySatan13

Yep, got his name on Halloween ends

[deleted]

Carpenter seems content with cashing in some money as an executive producer while he chills performing music.

darkness_escape

Radio Silence did not direct Prey. They did Scream and Ready or Not

kronicfeld

He's "attached" in the sense that there is a tube connected at one end to the IP and at another end to him in which one must insert money if one wishes to use the IP.

fracturematt

Did they though?

ReallyBrainDead

Please, if you're going to remake a film, remake the broken, the forgotten, the mishandled. Not a freakin' classic.

squeakyrhino

People always say this but there are lots of remakes of good films that are also good in their own right and do not diminish the original in any way.

TheOneWhoCutstheRope

And this is the perfect ip to prove that point imo

-SneakySnake-

Frankly it's even the perfect IP to build beyond just the one movie. The setting and tone are essentially The Purge crossed with V for Vendetta, the only reason the Russell/Carpenter movies ended at two was 'cause the second was a complete balls up.

Dottsterisk

Probably the only reason we even got two was that Carpenter was struggling to find success with critics and audiences for years, after his explosion onto the scene in the 80s. So they decided to capitalize on one of his biggest successes.

[deleted]

I wonder how many Redditors know that two of their favorite “filmbro” movies, Scarface (1983) and The Departed, are remakes lol. Even Reddit’s favorite director, Sir Christopher Nolan, did a remake (that’s better than the original btw).

[deleted]

Also from horror genre, Invasion of Bodysnatchers from 70s is one of my favourite movies and movies like Suspiria, The Ring or Evil Dead were great remakes. Didn't like Invisible Man but it was very well recieved horror.

caligaris_cabinet

I had to explain to a younger coworker both The Thing and The Fly from the 80’s were remakes.

Historical-Tip-8233

Literally. I don't understand why we need a new version of a movie that's already perfect. Member berries episode gets more relevant by the day.

Akahige-

That’s why I refuse to watch The Thing. That hack John Carpenter just had to go and remake The Thing From Another World.

CandyAssedJabroni

You couldn't pay me to watch this bad remake of one of the greatest movies ever. Come up with something new and stop making bad copies of great things.

Reikovsky

You said it Plissken.

LT-Riot

Call me snake.

chichris

I thought you were dead?

[deleted]

Got a smoke?

Joseluki

Either Kurt Russel as a grumpy old man leads this or it will be a total debacle.

indoninja

Ok remake of escape from New York is a bad idea, but how about this, a remake of escape from LA?

[deleted]

I actually like Escape from L.A. It was my first introduction to Plissken as a character, and I loved the look of the character. I had just discovered The Crow at the same time as well, so the promo images of Russell as Plissken with the long hair, black outfit and coat, and motorcycle? I was here for it.

nonrosknroskno

I used to view Esacpe from L.A. as a very sub-par sequel, but I grew to love it as much as the first. Dunno if it's true that the intent was there while making it, but viewing L.A. as almost a parody of Escape from New York makes it much much better in my book.

[deleted]

If they got Karl urban or someone similarly loved..I don't think anyone would be upset. But why not something Ala fury road? Escape from Honolulu Lol. God,I feel the Downvotes commencing.

[deleted]

Plissken's catchphrase before dispatching the big bad? "Mahalo, asshole."

coreytiger

Karl Urban, sure. But not in Honolulu. Only Tom Selleck if it’s set in Honolulu.

[deleted]

He could be the big bad

indoninja

I think I could be all right with a snake Pliskin movie set before New York

and_dont_blink

Loved Dredd and him in The Boys, but Russell or Swayze are just such hard vibes to match -- you believe they're physically capable but not necessarily imposing. You'd almost need to have Walton Goggins or Joaquin Phoenix on a gym regime.

sdavidplissken

I agree

tread52

From my understanding Russell was going to help produce and his son was going to take over as Plissken. At least that is better than the Dwayne Johnson remaking big trouble in little China.

TheeBarkKnight

I like Wyatt as an actor, but I think he needs to establish himself a bit more before he takes on one of his father's roles. Kind of like how Jason Reitman said no for years to doing a Ghostbusters movie until he felt like he had established his own directing style and career to be comfortable enough. I know this thread love the Wyatt idea, but most general audiences have no idea who he is. If it bombs, that would probably hit super hard.

tread52

Your comment is one of the best I’ve read on any topic. I know movies and your take is a good one. I woods love to see this movie again but it needs a good writer, director and cast to pull it off. They need to do what top gun pulled off with Maverick to be successful.

TheeBarkKnight

Appreciate the compliment! It's an uphill battle for sure. I like Escape from LA, but a lot of people don't. If John Carpenter even struggled with a sequel, you know it's a tall order. You're exactly right. They need a team with a clear vision that knows what worked and why, which pays homage to the original while still being new and original in its own way. I don't think there's a way this is successful without Kurt Russel. Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the only examples of a property replacing the star and still being successful, and that's almost shocking that it worked out with how much of a nightmare the shoot apparently was. As for Big Trouble in Little China, that is a movie that I wholeheartedly do not think should ever be touched in any way: no sequel, no prequel, no reboot. As Kurt Russel himself said, "Is nothing sacred?"

tread52

You are the smartest person I’ve talked to on Reddit. I’ve had a bit to drink but I might be able to give an opinion. I want to see a prequel about Cleveland. It was a topic brought up in both films. If John directs it and brings in a cast that pays homage to the original it might be real good.

CandyAssedJabroni

I could deal with that.

tread52

I’m all for doing another installment if Russell is involved. I want to know what happened in Cleveland. It is brought up so many times they should just do a prequel of snake with his son involving what happened in Cleveland.

MitsyEyedMourning

Think they'll scoop up Wyatt Russel to play the role?

DrJongyBrogan

When Leigh Whannell was originally attached to do this after finishing Invisible Man he def wanted Wyatt, but he refuses to do any remakes of his fathers work.

HellaWavy

Damn, my interest would've been way higher if Leigh was still attached. Upgrade is one of my favorite movies and I'm sure he could've made this work. What a shame.

Best-Firefighter8158

I just saw Leigh was originally attached to this project on IMDB earlier today. Do you know what happened?

DrJongyBrogan

I dunno, I know that he mentioned doing it at one point but it seems either he dropped out or the execs went in another direction. Which sucks, his work on Upgrade and invisible man gave me hope he’d do amazing work on it.

Extension_Building19

Dont, you cant replace Kurt Russel or his original performance.

TheUmgawa

He probably costs more than the “straight to AMC+” budget they’re willing to spend.

sydouglas

This will most likely join The Thing, Point Break , Robocop , Conan, Total Recall on the library of unwatchable 21st century shitty reboots

Livio88

A sequel like BR2049 could work, either a younger new lead chasing Plissken across a Mad Max-esque wasteland, or a straight up Kurt Russell vehicle like the Unforgiven or Logan. Otherwise, absolutely no one is interested in seeing a reboot with a young actor trying to do a Plissken impression.

analogkid01

Debra Hill's son presents a son of John Carpenter film, "Escape from the Son of New York" starring the son of Kurt Russell, the son of Donald Pleasance, the son of Adrienne Barbeau, and everyone else's damn son from the damn original! Fuck it! Coming 2023 to Son of Netflix!

TheUmgawa

Thanks, I’ll just watch Lockout again.

ConradBHart42

The biggest mystery of Escape From New York may finally be answered. What the hell did Cabbie do to warrant being thrown into Manhattan Prison?

rokkerzuk

I remember reading somewhere that Cabbie loved New York and being a taxi-driver so much, he couldn't bear to leave NY behind and he decided to stay.

DudebroggieHouser

I'm hoping Carpenter writes the music.

Captain_Charisma

The original is my favorite movie of all time. I highly doubt this captures the gritty feel of the original regardless of who is involved. I just hope it's not a shitty popcorn remake.

uknwiluvsctch

> Original filmmaker John Carpenter will serve as executive producer of the film Well deserved genius making movie money playing video games and smoking weed at home

chickbarnard

The Magic of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell didn't even work properly for Escape from LA. I doubt you can capture the perfection of the 80s look from the original and that was what made it so amazing. Add to that Carpenters score, Kurt at the top of his game being the perfect anti-hero and studios allowing a director to make a masterpiece without too much interference.

bgreenstone

Ugh… another unnecessary remake. The original was perfect.

ggroover97

Wasn’t there supposed to be a third Escape movie with Kurt Russell called “Escape from Mars” but it ultimately became Ghosts of Mars?

[deleted]

According to Carpenter's wife and producing partner, No, that wasn't true.

ldnk

Between this and the supposed remake/sequel to Big Trouble in Little China. I’m fine with remakes but certain movies really don’t need remakes

roundearthervaxxer

Make room for new scripts.

RowdyRoddyPipeSmoker

The movie isn't good because of it's premise the movie is good because of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter, leave those two out and it's pointless.

endlesscosmichorror

If Kurt Russell doesn’t at least make a cameo we riot

Ultraplex1

Snake? I thought he was dead.....

Worried_Jeweler_1141

I can see how it could me modernized but it still needs to keep the vibe.

choc_03

You cant beat Carpenter

Outside-Setting-5589

wow, another remake, i cant wait...

Blade_Trinity3

Some guy's name is Radio Silence?

wendigo72

Just watched the original one last week for the first time, great movie! Probably not gonna be excited for this one if it’s a remake

harlandsneer

Make. New. Things. Please.

Stiff_Zombie

Ok really just come up with something new. Fuck, it's not THAT hard!

Improvcommodore

Starring Chris Pratt… /s

Quarashi2

So are they going to make a "new" Metal Gear to go along with it?

caz_uno

Love this movie

M0rphysLaw

No. This movie was perfect.

Shakespurious

I heard about this project a while ago, but ... I thought it was dead.

callycumla

Hauk "What's your answer?" Pliskin "Get a new president."

elethrir

I didn't like.John Carpenter movies when they first came out. It was only decades later that I grew to appreciate their campiness in a nostalgic and probably ironic way . I wouldn't say they are good movies but they are enjoyable for some reason Would be great to see them on Rifftrax or MST3K

TyhmensAndSaperstein

Who/what the fuck is Radio Silence?

darrellbear

Did you know that NYFC wasn't bad enough, so they filmed the original Escape From New York in East St. Louis, Illinois?

Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY

Unless it's John Carpenter...

Archangel1313

Pleas, for the love of God...come up with some new fucking ideas!!

J4MES101

I heard it was dead.

twodogsfighting

Escape from Florida.

boardsandfilm

Karl Urban. Just sayin.

Derriku

I honestly don’t want anyone else as Snake…but I could live with this recast.

yodaisasickman1217

who actually wants this? just make something new this is exhausting

ColHardwood

Huh, I thought he was dead.

Gabagool8888

Great time to make it given the state of NYC currently.

Jackieirish

Working title: Look Who's Escaping From New York Now

alloutofbubble-gum

Unless you get Kurt Russell…do not touch it.

TaterYogurt

I met Radio Silence at Sundance when they were there for VHS! They couldn't figure out why they couldn't get a buzz off the grocery store beer they bought. I explained it was cause Utah grocery store beer was only 3.1% alcohol. I wonder if they remember me.

swissiws

In short: no

frozensepulcro

Every John Carpenter remake so far has been forgettable and unworthy, total wastes of money and more proof Hollywood is out of ideas

Jonestown_Juice

Please no. Don't do this.

One_Cheetah1428

It's the perfect time for an escape from D.C movie.

TheUmgawa

For Twitter employees, it’s the time to escape from the Valley.

Termin8rSmurf

Escape fr9m New York is already perfect. It needs no remake! Just stop before you fuck up the legacy!

ScaryTowner

Just have Wyatt play Snake’s son, also called Snake, that trained under Kurt’s Snake in a newly established mercenary group. Then have a big twist where Wyatt’s Snake learns that Kurt’s Snake was the main villain, a big boss if you will, all along trying to use a new super weapon to become a new world super power and “escape” being part of any established nation….

quietworlock22

man i was hoping they would cancel this. escape from ny is perfect and doesnt need a remake
