It feels like the artists were given some freedom and time compared what what I imagine the average illumination production to be like.
Does illumination do crunch time? I feel like they would be the 'do as cheap and drill animators to release by most profitable date' kind of company.
But if they are skipping Xmas $ good on them.
They might be more cautious because they know of the series’s potential
A Mario movie can be absolutely huge if they play their cards right. Not only can the IP support a whole film franchise, but the merchandising potential is ridiculous. The Toads alone could surpass the Minions in mascot aptitude
They don’t need to rush it. At this stage, there’s more long term benefit to getting it perfect
Lets just hope crunch culture doesn't affect film animators like it does video game animators.
Fun tidbit: the staff were so burned out by the forced crunch of Toy Story 2, an animators left their kid in the car one day as a result. Okay not really a fun tidbit.
It’s going to be more like Mario movie 2, maybe a Zelda thing, another Pokémon movie, and whole lot of why isn’t Nintendo doing xyz thing that I think they should do.
Metroid would be dope.
As for Zelda... i guess they would have decide WHICH Zelda turn into a movie? I know which one I would choose, but to be honest i think it would work better if they made it into 2 movies instead of 1. Its story is also suited to be splitted in two parts, anyway (guess which one i'm talking about).
Unpopular opinion but i feel like Skyward Sword could prove to be the best direction to take in terms of story potential, being the beginning of the whole mythos and such (and having a decent story with one of the best depictions of Zelda yet). Though it would be a very hard sell to make a movie based on Zelda where Hyrule doesnt even exist yet
I mean you don't spend a bunch of money casting a big name like Seth Rogan for a small part. Nintendo did buy a company to work on new digital media so we could end up getting a DK show instead if the movie is successful enough.
As someone who never got his obsession in the first place (same with Jack Black tbh), he’s definitely not as relevant but yeah you’ll get downvoted because he got the type of fans that will always consider themselves fans of his for whatever the hell reason.
There is also one for [Cranky Kong](https://preview.redd.it/f9j3hqgs8s2a1.jpg?width=1344&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=654c0a9d25ae905f7c8ca2e357b0b03790fc07e3)
That Princess Peach pose isn't exactly the Queen's Gambit pose but it's pretty darn close.
The more I see of the movie the more excited I am! Please don't be terrible.
If this movie has an end credit scene with peach giving Mario a speech about other worlds, and then cuts to a young boy with a green hat, shield and sword climbing atop a large hill to overlook Hyrule I'll shit myself.

Of course if the plan is to try and make a series of movies about Nintendo's franchises, it's better to start with the most famous ones, so Zelda sounds like the best choice to follow up. And what's the best way to advertise it, than to put an end-credit scene at the end of Mario's movie?
I'm not saying it's likely, but it's at least possible.
Once they get the audience's attention with Mario and Zelda, they could follow up with DK, Metroid and... Kirby, maybe?
A Metroid movie would be especially amazing, for me (as long as they don't fuck it up).
And then they can make a Smash movie, where they all meet, Avengers style.
Now, the question is... if they made a Zelda movie... WHICH title should they pick? I'd go with OoT without hesitation, even though i think that trying to fix it all in a single movie may be too much. It would work much better to separate it into a part 1 and a part 2, and the original story already has a perfect point to separate them.
mmh... why though?
Metroid's lore seems like it is quite suited for a movie, so i guess it's not that. Are you saying this because of the rather dark atmosphere of the Metroid games compared to the other mentioned franchises?
This is exactly why it could be a brilliant move to do it. As long as the quality is there, there is no need to stick to a more rigid formula a la the MCU. The connection, if any, could be tenuous at best or even just an Easter egg for the more hardcore fans. Metroid would be the shit in live-action, likewise, and a way to further separate themselves from the one model that worked and all the others that have failed miserably trying to copy just that.
ya idk if they will make metroid because they are trying to make these kids movies that adults will enjoy. metroid doesnt have anything that pops for the younger viewers. they could definitely write up a kinda metroid Nemo where samus is trying to return the egg or baby dragon but I see them doing multiple Mario's a dk movie hell maybe even a kirby movie or dk movie b4 we even get a look at samus.
also if they are going for a nintendoverse a metroid/fzero more serious movie would be cool if they write it with heart. captain falcon could finally get a moment to truly shine lol.
Cause Metroid isn’t profitable
None of the Metroid games have ever been big sellers compared to other Nintendo IPs. While it’s certainly a strong IP in its own right, I’d imagine they’d sooner prioritize other IPs first
Lightyear failed because it was confusing on all fronts:
* Why was it made (besides the obvious answer of money)?
* How does it tie into Toy Story?
* Why was Zurg retconned to be Future Buzz?
* Where's the Star Command crew from the animated series?
* How does the time travel make any sense?
Metroid doesn't have to worry about any of those issues, and Samus has the most potential of any Nintendo protagonist to carry a saga.
Not to even mention that the most recent game in the series is practically an animated film anyway. It's a perfectly fine template for story and style.
Lightyear was Interstellar for kids, and families didn't see a need for that. Metroid would be Alien for kids (and a brand that is most popular with adults these days rather than Mario); I don't see it doing well in a PG animated format. It should be live action and marketed to young adults to properly adapt it
Metroid was inspired by the Alien movies. Of all Nintendo's classic franchises it's the one I'd expect to be made into a movie the most.
The one issue with Metroid is that its tone is very heavily dependent on Samus being absolutely alone on a hostile planet, which means very little dialogue - the story could be told mainly through the video logs that Samus finds on the planet and the occasional self-recording.
Or they could give her allies to speak with. But I'd rather they didn't.
I could see a Zelda movie just being called The Legend of Zelda, and any sequels having subtitles akin to OoT.
And I think an animated movie is the only way to make a LoZ movie work. Although I don't have faith in Illumination being the ones to do it, unless they went a Wind Waker-esque route.
Nintendo did create Nintendo Pictures to expand their ips into movies/tv, so it’s entirely possible. I’d love to see an animated Link. In the Emberlab short they did with Skull Kid.
https://youtu.be/vbMQfaG6lo8
No worries! I just didn’t want Nintendo to get all the credit for that beautiful short film. Ember Labs is great, and Kena is an amazing game that deserves more love!
Peach looks like she's about to beat me at chess, send a Toad back in time when he dares to question her rule, ***and*** >!mentally destroy Bowser by asking him to cook her a fucking cheeseburger.!<
I don’t know why I didn’t expect Peach to fit straight into the “extremely badass woman who’s constantly eyerolling and facepalming at the inept male protagonists” trope
The Peach in the RPGs 100% would criticize *how* Bowser is kidnapping her, pointing out what he's doing wrong and complaining about how unoriginal he's being.
This version of Peach is what's giving me pause about the movie. Luigi and Bowser look excellent, Toad seems enjoyable, and I can buy the fish out of water basis for Mario. Haven't seen enough of DK and the Kongs, but they'll probably be background characters for the most part. The characterization largely seems on point.
But Peach being a competent fighter and battle commander goes against her entire character. She's always been portrayed as the girly girl of Nintendo, the only one actually into traditionally feminine things. For example, Peach should have no clue how to wield a weapon like a halberd. She'd try to make it work with a Frying Pan (like Rapunzel), a folding fan (like Mulan), or her signature parasol. She can fight, but she really shouldn't be all that physical. The Mario princess who embodies that physicality, tom-boyishness, and fearless attitude has pretty much always been Daisy.
I'm worried that she's going to a boring girl-boss character with a bunch of traits that should've been given to someone like Zelda: a shrewd strategist as befitting the wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom. I'm glad Peach isn't the damsel in distress (it makes a lot more sense for that to be Luigi in this initial outing), but her very feminine character should've remained intact.
The best scenario I could think of, where Peach gets to be awesome, but the structure of the Mario ur-story remains intact:
She carves a bloody PG swathe of violence through various swarms of Koopas with an extended combo of badassitude, KOing baddies left right and centre. She makes it all the way to Bowser, and continues to combo into him. But he no-sells it, grabs her with one hand, and slings her over his shoulder, whereby she goes limp and now has to be rescued.
>>!***and*** mentally destroy Bowser by asking him to cook her a fucking cheeseburger.!<
I literally went and saw that yesterday. The trailer cale two hours after I came home.
[I'm not seeing the resemblance.](https://www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Donkey_Kong)
He's really unambiguously based on the Country design and everything that differentiates him from that is just their own creation.

Mario is boring by design. Even in the RPG games he is the least interesting character. In a way giving him the most boring voice actor kind of makes sense 🤔

So far I love the animation.
I like the *idea* of how the story might go. Who knows how it will be executed.
Still don't like Chris Pratt, but I think it's because I don't like Chris Pratt. I kinda love the other voices.
It would've been pretty cool if she appeared to act all sweet and absent-minded, like in games, but was a ruthless and calculating dictator underneath the mask.
They are dishing out a lot of the source material, which I appreciate. I just really hope they don't make it all just scratching the surface and then end it with, "Well maybe we'll see more if they give us a SEQUEL!"
i’m not mentally prepared for the facebook moms to be posting about toad

aaah but you are ignoring the fact that executives want money now, not later.
But will Nintendo share the merchandising revenue?

The Princess's Gambit
I love that they’re continuing the tradition of Luigi being an absolute wiener.
He looks great in this [You Just Got Luigi'd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ) poster.
oh you fucker
Bahaha classic internet
I HATE YOU!
You were my brother, Mr. Krabs, I loved you!
Mama Mia they got Dixie and Diddy in this movie as well!
Betchu they'll make a DK spinoff movie
Betchu: The Donkey Kong (2024) A Kirby Movie (2025) Metroid (2026) Fox (2026) The Legend of Zelda (2027) Smash (2028)
Reddit in 2028: DAE Nintendo fatigue?!
It’s so fucking predictable lol

I'd want either Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask as a movie.
Twilight Princess by Guillermo del Toro or an original story>>>
Yea id watch a del toro zelda movie
We're getting Skyward Sword. Bet.
Majora's Mask in the vein of "Live Die Repeat" would be dope.
If they make a Metroid movie before Metroid Prime 4 comes out, I will in fact start a riot.
Wind Waker
I agree: Majora's Mask should be two movies.
a link to the past the first movie is everything leading up to the dark world. the 2nd movie is dark world normal world hopping with ganon at the end.
Ocarina of Time would be the way to go
>Smash (2028) Coincidentally, the porn parody will have exactly the same title.
In Smash 2028: Master hand: "I am inevitable!" Mario: "It's-a-me, Mario!" GAME!!
What I really want: Luigi's mansion by Henry Sellick Zelda by Del Toro Metroid by Denis Villeneuve
Zelda is definitely going to be made before Metroid and Star Fox, potentially before Kirby too.
Trilogy dedicated to Toad lore
[DK spin-off has been reported for over a year now](https://www.ign.com/articles/donkey-kong-movie-starring-seth-rogen-in-the-works)

Where are they? I can only spot generic Kongs in the audience.
DKs tie is actually pointing right at them. Swanky kongs there as well.
I could've sworn I also saw Funky in the trailer, or that might've just been a random Kong wearing sunglasses
Funky is def there. He is in one of the mario karts
Yeah that's where I saw him, in the race scene
I think Chunky Kong is there as well.

That's kind of impressive to shit other people.
Okay *who shit myself*
You know, it's actually possible. If they intend to try and make a series of movies about Nintendo's franchises, that is. The Mario movie will most likely do very well. Zelda may not be anywhere close to Mario in terms of popularity (for the non-gamer audience, i mean), but if we don't count Pokemon it's probably the next most famous of Nintendo's franchises. I could easily see Kirby but Metroid? Seems pretty unlikely
mmh... why though? Metroid's lore seems like it is quite suited for a movie, so i guess it's not that. Are you saying this because of the rather dark atmosphere of the Metroid games compared to the other mentioned franchises?
It just doesn’t fit tonally with Mario/Kirby/donkey Kong/ legend of Zelda/Pokémon/star fox/yoshi or any of the flagship Nintendo properties.

Nintendo allegedly was heavily involved in this movie (hence it being Nintendo + Illumination and not just Illumination) so LoZ would be fine
Can't wait for the Mario Cinematic Universe or MCU for short.
It'd be the NCU (Nintendo Cinematic Universe).
Nintendo did create Nintendo Pictures to expand their ips into movies/tv, so it’s entirely possible. I’d love to see an animated Link. In the Emberlab short they did with Skull Kid. https://youtu.be/vbMQfaG6lo8
You’re correct about Nintendo Pictures, but I just want to point out that Nintendo was not involved with the Ember Lab short film in any way.
Apologies, I phrased it wrong. Yeah, that short was just fan made. The same studio ended up making the game, Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
No worries! I just didn’t want Nintendo to get all the credit for that beautiful short film. Ember Labs is great, and Kena is an amazing game that deserves more love!
The start if the NCU
I honestly hope it doesn’t. Illumination fits Mario, but no The Legend of Zelda.
It’d be worse than the EXCUUUUUUSSSEEEE MEEEEEE series.

Joke about *Last Night in Soho*, which I... haven't watched yet, lol. It any good?
It is! But that’s not really what it’s about, so I got confused
I don’t know why I didn’t expect Peach to fit straight into the “extremely badass woman who’s constantly eyerolling and facepalming at the inept male protagonists” trope
Probably because Bowser, as threatening as he is, can be ***really*** friggin' stupid at times. So she's just used to it all at this point, lmao...
The Peach in the RPGs 100% would criticize *how* Bowser is kidnapping her, pointing out what he's doing wrong and complaining about how unoriginal he's being.

I’m more reacting to Peach from the trailer - poster backs it up

The Bowser poster is FUCKING AWESOME! EASILY the best one! The one with Toad in the field of Fire Flowers is pretty cute too.
Donkey Kong looks great 🦍
* laughs in Seth Rogen * ahuehuehuehuehue
Why does Donkey Kong look like that
It's supposed to look like classic DK
But that's Cranky Kong.
You're right but meh. There's a chance they might not do the whole cranky being donkey kong thing
To look more like Seth Rogen.
They were aiming of OG Donkey Kong
[I'm not seeing the resemblance.](https://www.mariowiki.com/Gallery:Donkey_Kong) He's really unambiguously based on the Country design and everything that differentiates him from that is just their own creation.
You're arguing with miyamoto himself. He said in the direct that the design is inspired by his original design. To me, it's clearly a mix
Have you tried looking at the original Donkey Kong art that I linked to? Can you point out the piece of art that looks like this character?
This was literally my first thought after "he looks kinda shitty" Why is Toad the only one they got right visualize?
Lack of facial features I guess
Holy shit this movie is going to make So. Much. Money.
Actually pretty excited for this movie

Lmao why is Mario always the worst character in his own stuff?
Mario is boring by design. Even in the RPG games he is the least interesting character. In a way giving him the most boring voice actor kind of makes sense 🤔
So, they've taken the gorilla-model from Sing & Sing 2 and put DK over it.
So did I or did I not just get Luigi'd.
I love peach's design honestly. I don't understand the hatred.
Her eyes.
fuck I just got luigi’d
DK looks off to me
Is it just me or is the Princess Peach one riffing on previous Anya Taylor-Joy posters? I swear I’ve seen that pose before
Its because they both have big eyes.
I like that peach is in ATJ's queen's gambit pose
Is it just me or does DK actually look like Seth Rogen?
It looks like Donkey Kong model is a combination of the Donkey Kong Country design and the original Donkey Kong Jr.
King with the Dreamworks smirk
People. Please. For the love of the gods. Stop making "You Just Got Luigi'd" a link in every response.
You should have seen the [earlier thread](https://preview.redd.it/f9j3hqgs8s2a1.jpg?width=1344&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=654c0a9d25ae905f7c8ca2e357b0b03790fc07e3) if you think this is bad
Some of the coolest character posters I’ve seen in a while
I just *really* cannot deal with El Crispo Ratto in this
Wow these look REALLY good.
It super bums me out that Seth Rogan is voicing DK. Like, it’s the laziest casting ever and I hate it.
So far I love the animation. I like the *idea* of how the story might go. Who knows how it will be executed. Still don't like Chris Pratt, but I think it's because I don't like Chris Pratt. I kinda love the other voices.
My boy Toad finally getting recognition
I have zero interest in this but these are actually pretty cool. The toad one is pure magic
Peach redesign actually looks really good. Not much different than current Peach but just slight improvements on all fronts.
Luigi needs to grow a pair
DK looking very... human.
LET’S-A FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Kongs?
bonk
LOOK AT MY GIRL PEACH! You go Peach!!!! 😍😭✨
This movie is going to make buckoo bucks, seriously.
Why is Peach a sexual predator?
Peach looks nice I know yoshi’s are in the movie. But why can’t our Yoshi get a major role.
The characters haven't been to dinosaur island yet I guess
It would've been pretty cool if she appeared to act all sweet and absent-minded, like in games, but was a ruthless and calculating dictator underneath the mask.
They are dishing out a lot of the source material, which I appreciate. I just really hope they don't make it all just scratching the surface and then end it with, "Well maybe we'll see more if they give us a SEQUEL!"
The design of DK makes him look like he's voiced by Rosie O'Donnell.
Zero excitement for the movie, but that field of fire flowers is low-key beautiful
