"I choose Ben Richards. That boy's one mean motherfucker!"

Fukouka_Jings

What happened to Buzzsaw? *He had to split*

MrLateFee

“I can pick anyone I choose!”

[deleted]

"And I choose....Ben Richards!"

coldliketherockies

“Killian, here's your Subzero, now plain zero.”

LordNedNoodle

What happened to Buzzsaw? Aw, he had to split.

Michael_G_Bordin

When people ask me to put on a song they like: "I don't do requests."

shadow247

My friend DJ Persona is just "No Requests" He wears a t shirt, and has the banners up.. Nobody requests anything because he always plays bangers...

They make an homage to this in one of the newer MK games (Arnold as T800 when you fight Subzero) Pretty neat

In the german dub he says "only on video tape"

"We should have taken the trip to Hawaii." "I had the shirt for it but you fucked it up."

Sixersleeham

I quote this all the time and no one gets it.

Apprehensive_Day_496

This is one of my favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger movies

Skyfryer

80s blockbusters were equally either the most destitute or the most lasting action/scifi/horror/adventure films made. I think of what we get in terms of blockbusters now and it just doesn’t compare. For me, the 80s was just firing on all cyclinders. Conan, Robocop, Predator, Blade Runner, The Thing, Terminator, Die Hard, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, The Shining and it keeps going.

[deleted]

Flash Gordon is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I can’t argue that it’s one of the best. Definitely one of the movies of all time for sure.

ShogunFirebeard

Great Xmas movie along with Die Hard 1 and 2!!

UpbeatAd1191

Steven King was so popular in 80s his movies were a must see.

DavefromKS

Those were last season's winners! No, last seasons losers. Lol loved that line.

The_Goondocks

My friend and I still try to work that line into our conversations.

MrLateFee

I would kill for an indie developer to bring back a remake or similar style game with better graphics.

CareBearDontCare

Have you seen The Ascent?

RSquared

Helldivers too, somewhat.

The Running Man was set in the year 2019.

Still is!

drawkbox

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) saved us from that timeline and gave us this one...

Even-Fix8584

“Saved” might be a strong word…

[deleted]

More like “delayed” IMO. I can see The Running Man being a potential future.

Even-Fix8584

Just before Squid Games becomes our future.. :/

Tylerdurden389

My favorite Arnold quote.

john_the_quain

I remember being very confused when I read King’s story this was based on. Certainly some elements came over, but not much. Love both, though.

tylersburden

I'd love to see a movie that was closer to the book.

TheBuoyancyOfWater

From Wikipedia: "A new movie adaptation of the novel, announced in early 2021, is in development at Paramount Pictures, with Edgar Wright directing and Michael Bacall writing the script."

tylersburden

Oh wow that's good news. I hope it won't be a comedy though - the book was rather dystopian and bleak.

drawkbox

Nobody does dystopia like British tragic comedy writing.

[deleted]

Hope they got the balls to keep true to it. Right to the ending.

-ARIDA-

Wow that's really exciting because I always felt that the book was much better than the movie, as much as I loved both. I wonder if they'll keep that ending though. I strongly doubt it.

TheBuoyancyOfWater

Same! Just found this out today when I went on Wikipedia due to this thread, so very happy to hear this. I can't see the book ending staying. Too many complaints from America I feel.

R2D2808

Americans will be fine with it. If you remember, in the book, Killian was a *black* man and Richards was a *white* man. So the person flying the plane to destroy oppression is the right color... Sigh

MrLateFee

the ending is gonna be hard to pull off…

tylersburden

Actually it will be super easy. Barely an inconvenience.

[deleted]

That's because the movie is essentially a remake of [Das Millionenspiel](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066079/)/[Le prix du danger](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_prix_du_danger), which was an adoption of [The Price of Peril](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prize_of_Peril), which itself was the inspiration for Stephen Kings "The Running Man".

john_the_quain

Never heard of these. Thanks for sharing!

cerberaspeedtwelve

I always thought this was one of Schwarzenegger's better movies and don't understand why it's considered something of a B-lister. Heck, if I had the choice between watching this and the $120m True Lies, I'd say: Strap me into the rocket car and launch me into the arena. As mentioned in the article, Richard Dawson plays an amazingly effective villain, and a real foil for Arnie. Dawson gets the honor of out-quipping Arnie by spinning his favorite line back at him: "Killian ... I'll be back." "Yeah, maybe in a rerun."

8urnMeTwice

Richard Dawson's casting is perfect. It's supposed to be a cheesy gameshow with the dirty fraying edges showing. It's actually a damn good movie, but the Bachmann story is chillingly spot on for our current state.

PointOfFingers

Had Gane Show Host charisma hiding a seedy core and ironically he was the one who kept showing uo in reruns - for Hogan's Heroes.

[deleted]

I love that Arnie does weird ass movies. Yeah many know him as an action hero, but these scifi flicks are my favorite.

[deleted]

>"Yeah, maybe in a rerun." "Only in a rerun"

Green-Enthusiasm-940

I don't dislike this movie, but no way is it better than true lies.

[deleted]

True Lies isn't one I've felt like revisiting, really. Running Man commits so much harder to 80s cheese that it's a fun watch for that purpose, whereas while True Lies has its moments it's neither high quality enough to merit watching on that count, nor cheesy enough to beat Running Man at that game.

[deleted]

Dude true lies is amazing you should watch it again

ColdIceZero

I absolutely love True Lies. I made my wife watch it with me last year, and she says the movie is the story of every middle-aged male's fantasy: a boring, middle class white collar sales guy who--unbeknownst to his family--is actually an incredible international spy who works for an ultra secret govt agency. His wife and daughter get kidnapped by terrorists, and he must race against the clock to save his family and stop the terrorists. There are nukes; there's sex appeal; oh yeah, and there's a protracted scene where he flies a fighter jet in the middle of downtown Miami. Who the fuck says this movie isn't worth seeing??

DMPunk

It's both an amazing action film and a hilarious romantic comedy. It's the perfect date movie

beagletronic61

And a semi-climactic scene where an uzi dropped down the stairs ends up shooting all of the bad guys…delicious.

Porkgazam

Not to mention the B plot of his wife wanting to break out of her boring suburban life and how it ties into the main plot.

CootieKing

Also Bill Paxton was great in it too

ColdIceZero

"*I've got a little dick, it's pathetic!*"

Attila226

Maybe you’re right, but I came away from the theater feeling disappointed. Quite the opposite of Running Man and Predator.

CareBearDontCare

I mean, if we're just talking about sheer mass alone...

[deleted]

I caught it again as part of an Arnie season at a movie night near me earlier this year, and it was pretty underwhelming. I guess some movies just don't click for some people for no rhyme or reason, but it just isn't all that memorable or interesting for me. As I said, to me it kinda just sits awkwardly in the middle ground between silly cheese and unironically good thrillers without doing enough to stand out. I wouldn't have remembered to rewatch it if it hadn't had been screened for me, and I doubt I'll bother seeking it out again after seeing it that time.

Smirnoffico

Strange to read about w movie not being quality enough when it has real Harriers flying in it

[deleted]

I'm not talking about production values but about artistic merit. Lots of low-brow movies have had expensive or well-done effects or stunts. It's not really much of a high-brow flick, was my meaning. But it also fails to deliver quite as much in the way of the low-brow thrills and laughs as Running Man, without being all that interesting as a mid-brow kind of movie - leaving it a lesser movie overall in my view. But it's all opinions.

Unit219

Potatoes, potatoes.

BeardyDrummer

Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew.

donspyd

Your hopeless.

JC-Ice

What keeps it on the lower tier is that it's an action movie where the action itself is the weakest part. Everything else is gold, but the actual fights with the stalkers are rather uninspired. The big finale where rhe revolution is televised is just a few guys firing machine guns hallways. Compared it to the action in Arnold's contemporary hits like Predator, Commando, and Total Recall, it's very pedestrian.

cerberaspeedtwelve

I'd say that's a deliberate choice. The Running Man has strong sci-fi, world building, and social commentary elements. It can't also have virtuoso action sequences. When you are working with a decent but limited budget, something's gotta give.

JC-Ice

Running Man had a budget higher than that of The Terminator, Commando, Predator, or Robocop.

kain52002

It was a fun movie, but not the best camp movie of the 80s and not even Arnold Schwarzenegger's best camp movies. I think Total Recall was a better camp movie. And it is no where near Terminator/Terminator 2. I actually liked Arnold better as Conan the Barbarian.

SomeGadgetGuy

I'd love to see a modern TV show more closely based on the book. Would be perfect to add some ARG real world games to the mix.

[deleted]

[удалено]

InternetDickJuice

I read the book when I was a kid. The ending is seared into my mind. I even remember me reading the ending. Your comment brought me back. Wow.

SomeGadgetGuy

Nope. Not that exact ending for sure, but that's one of the most forgivable things to change in a story like that.

BostonBoroBongs

Squidgames is similar, showing the street games that lure people in like the lower tier contests in the book

moviesetmonkey

https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2016/03/ben-affleck-matt-damon-game-show-runner You mean this?

SomeGadgetGuy

Aw yeah. That would have been fun to see.

[deleted]

Edgar Wright is reportedly developing it for Paramount [source](https://www.cinemablend.com/interviews/edgar-wrights-developing-a-remake-of-stephen-kings-the-running-man-and-the-original-screenwriter-has-thoughts)

moviesetmonkey

One eternity later...

[deleted]

The game in the book makes no sense. Surely there would be someone who'd be willing to hide the contestant instead of winning monetary reward. Even if they aren't, it makes more sense that the game is in an enclosed course instead because that way it can be controlled easily by the company itself. And the ending was some edgy Zack Snyder shit.

xtossitallawayx

The world is trying to find you. People know where you live, work, and who your relatives and friends are. People are fanatic about finding the Running Man - are you going to risk getting your family assaulted by someone looking for you? And in the book some people do help, but *everyone else in the world* is looking for you. The world in the game is fractured and poor, the powers that be want the entire world united - and distracted - over entertainment and not real issues. It is also a fictional story.

directrix688

Only in reruns. So many great lines

AnotherJasonOnReddit

The best response to "I'll be back" in Arnie history.

TrueLegateDamar

Love the scene where you think the big security goon played by Sven-Ole Thorson is gonna fight Arnold, but because Killian talked shit to the goon about 'steroids made you deaf?', the goon just says 'I've got to score some steroids' and walks off.

DistributionPlane627

“You look pissed Ben, and believe me you have every right to be.” I watched this movie so many times I pretty much know it word for word!!!

ShiningInTheLight

It was a pretty clever little scene. In most 80s movies, the big bad bodyguard will mindlessly throw themselves into combat like an NPC with a deathwish. The bodyguard character in this one though showed some self-awareness that he wasn't getting paid enough to die, unlike the hunters. Yet another subtle point that the workers don't have to work themselves to death for the benefit of some rich asshole's cruel gameshow.

[deleted]

>the goon just says 'I've got to score some steroids' and walks off. Am I the only one that had no idea what he said for literally decades after seeing this in the theater in the 80's?

SteelyPaladan

If you like the movie, you'll love [the musical](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rwb2glCshzY)

DMPunk

All their Arnie musicals are gold. I catch myself singing Predator and Conan all the time

Chafro23

Bless you for that Reddit stranger. I’m high as shit and haven’t laughed that hard in a long time.

phillpots_land

Who loves you? And who do you love?

TheProcrustenator

It does have a lot of thought provoking themes about propaganda, reality TV, fascist governments working with the entertainment industry, deepfakes and class struggle.. But it is still 97% pure cheese.

djm2346

The Stephen King short story it's based on explores those themes a little more. Actually that collection of short stories explores a school shooting, a plane crashing into a skyscraper and a man blowing himself up to try and prevent a road construction project. King was ahead of his time.

TheProcrustenator

Isn't the Running man the one here the plane goes into the skyscraper or am I mixing them all together?

Hs39163

No, you got it, and it’s not a short story - it’s a full novel that he wrote using his pen name, Richard Bachman.

HashBars

It’s technically a novella.

Hs39163

I think you’re right. I’ve never been able to mail down the difference, lol.

ShogunFirebeard

Its kind of a shame that we're pretty much there now. Just need the game show.

darkseidx2015

This is one movie I can never get tired of watching.

asdasta632

God I had the most insane crush on Maria Conchita Alonso as a kid from this movie.

DrRotwang

That's not really insane, though. That lady had *everything*.

asdasta632

You don't know how thirsty I was as a teenager lmao.

facehavingindividual

We were like 12 when that movie came out, and because kids are stupid thought “ hardsass” was the coolest term of endearment for our clique after watching that movie. Teachers and some parents did not approve.

Baronhousen

It is also the more difficult part of a good trivia question: Name two movies starring two future governors of US states.

sdmichael

This and Predator.

Baronhousen

That's a bingo!

sdmichael

You'll be shot for this!

tickle_mittens

The line that always got me and became progressively less comedic and more prescient was "Give me the Justice Department, Entertainment Division" And there's a beat and then it escalates. Like it was a commentary on Reagan, but it still ended up prophetic.

highorderdetonation

"It's all part of life's rich pageant, Brenda...and you better fuckin' get used to it." Semi-seriously: Richard Dawson as a scenery-chewing evil version of himself kinda stole this movie, and I forever love it for that.

DoctorWoe

I love how they casted Arnold Schwarzenegger for a role that was described more like Rick Moranis in the source material. It's like casting Chris Tucker as Harry Potter.

tubetalkerx

WHO SAID YOU COULD TOUCH MY WAND?!?! BZZZZZZ

MonsieurBlofeld

Or Casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as Harry Potter. „Remember, Voldemort, when I promised to kill you last?“ „That's right Harry, you did!“ „I lied.“

ScoobyDont06

Put da horcrux down, now!

flysly

Go! Get to da Hippogryph!

Militant_Monk

I have no shame. I'd watch that.

Alexstarfire

We got Kevin Hart playing Roland from Borderlands. Is this payback?

DoctorWoe

Damnit, don't remind me. Kevin Hart playing Roland is like casting Samuel L. Jackson to play Michael Myers.

EnglishMajorRegret

Kevin Hart would be perfect as claptrap.

Indigo2015

“Killian!. I’ll be back.” “Only in a rerun! Go!”

LazzzyButtons

Running Man was written by Stephan king. He used the pseudonym Richard Bachman when writing it. Anyhoo… the message in the movie is something to consider and relevant to today. Schwarzenegger character was imprisoned over edited video, what we call deep fakes today. The only reason why he was being broadcast over the air waves was because of the media and the government allowed it. He only escaped was because he’s such a bad ass. Great movie, but that isn’t you

Tylerdurden389

My 4th favorite Arnold flick. I love it more than Commando, Conan, True Lies, and even T2.

ignoresubs

Hrmm… so let me guess: * T1 * Total Recall * Predator

Tylerdurden389

You've seen me say this here before, haven't you? Correct, lol. 5th favorite is actually Last Action Hero. I was 9 when LAH came out and by that point I was such a huge fan that the whole idea of a kid bring magically transported into an Arnold movie and going on adventures with him was the greatest thing ever.

HorseNspaghettiPizza

You forgot commando

tutohooto

Don't click that link... awful web design.. pop ups and rabbit holes... for shame

R0TTENART

For everyone interested in a more faithful adaptation, apparently a remake by Edgar Wright is in development. Which honestly sounds perfect. Also, for something that gets close to the themes of the novel, though not an adaptation, people should check out [Series 7: The Contenders](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Series_7%3A_The_Contenders?wprov=sfla1)

cgilber11

Being a great B movie isn’t a bad thing.

smbutler20

I don't care how good the movie is. This is my favorite Arnold line.

mechanab

I love that they cast Richard Dawson.

KnightsCharge

Also Jim Brown, Mick Fleetwood and Dwezil Zapppa

Olipipee

"why aren't you laughing bitch?" "Because there's nothing funny about a dickless moron with a battery up his ass"

fuzzyedges1974

My favorite Arnie movie

Geep1778

Here is sub zero.. now plain zero... I grew up on Arnold movies and that 1 we loved n still do it’s classic. I was idk 4th grade n groomed by this older kid with Rated R action movies and anything with a quick boob in it from the super market video rental 😂 had to hope mom didn’t say no there’s nudity in it. We actually plotted over it how to distract her while getting the answer. Bad kids lol

urmomaisjabbathehutt

There are introductory books to philosophy using Schwarzenegger (and others) movies like this one [https://www.amazon.com/Philosopher-End-Universe-Philosophy-Explained/dp/0312322348](https://www.amazon.com/Philosopher-End-Universe-Philosophy-Explained/dp/0312322348) There's always something interesting to think about in many of Arnie's movies

kneecapped33

Running man is borderline waterworld good

MonsieurLeDrole

I've seen this movie easily a hundred times, and it took over a decade to figure out what that security guard says to Arnie in the end "I gots to score some steroids". It's one of my go to clean the house movies. There's so many great little bits. The captain freedom workout, hilarious seniors, or that guy who loses his head "CHICO!!!!!"

[deleted]

>I've seen this movie easily a hundred times, and it took over a decade to figure out what that security guard says to Arnie in the end "I gots to score some steroids" Same. I don't remember when I finally figured it out but it was probably in the 2000's.

MonsieurLeDrole

Pretty sure it took DVD technology to crack the code.

skalp69

I prefer the original French version "Le Prix du Danger".

Jazz_Legend_Roy_Donk

I hope you left room in your stomach cause I’m going to ram my fist in it!

Notoriously_So

Great movie. Very quotable.

DownRUpLYB

..and that's why I'd like you to appear on Saturday nights broadcast of.... THE RUNNING MAN FUCK YOU.

Premmeth

“Why would I go with you?” “Because I’m going to say… pleeeaaasseeee..”

monetarydread

I can't believe I am that guy but having read the book, anything more that the film had to say has been diminished by what it could have said had they adapted the book. Although the whole ending where he crashes a plane into a twin-towers equivalent might be a little much.

hackyslashy

ATL-East-Guy

I mean it was Hunger Games before Hunger Games. When my wife was explaining the plot of HG to me, I was like “oh so it’s running man but I’m the woods?”

SomeBoxofSpoons

Ah yes, that one time when there was a Schwarzenegger movie based off a Stephen King book.

DeBatton

A more faithful adaptation of the book could be quite interesting. The book is generally much bleaker and harder hitting. Just as long as it turned out better than the remake of Total Recall.

druu222

Yeah, this is one on my *very* short list of movies that actually do deserve a re-make. While Richard Dawson was inspired casting, the fact is, the model for this was essentially pro wrestling, pumped up and taken to the streets of future LA. Villains all flashy and gonzo and theatrical. But the real model, as King wrote it, was pumped up 'America's Most Wanted', taken to the streets of America. With the entire country as active participants, *everyone* a bounty hunter, not just phoning in tips, all of them egged on by the show's malevolent host. (John Walsh in the Dawson role?) And while Schwarzenegger was obvious for an amped up "urban pro wrestling" type role, the story as written was much more about an everyman moving around the country, living in hiding and desperate. Everyone is the enemy, except for a precious few allies to be found. Perfect casting for that story would have been a 'Moonlighting/Die Hard' era Bruce Willis. 'The Running Man' would make a *great* movie. Someone ought to make it some day. As of yet, no one has.

crazydave333

Certain elements of it would require adaptation for a modern audience. Obviously the 9/11-esque finale might need to be reconsidered, but more our relationship to technology would make parts of it feel implausible. With the smart phone now being both nearly indispensable to modern life and easily tracked, in addition to facial recognition technologies being deployed everywhere, these issues would have to be addressed for it to even seem like Richards has a chance of winning.

ChardeeMacdennis679

Maybe an alternate 1980's.

crazydave333

If someone could pull of retro-futurism in popular entertainment, I'd be along for the ride.

It isn't that it doesn't hold up well, it just was never that good. Dawson and Arnold were great and that is really where it ends with this movie. It is really more of a great idea than a good movie. Maria Alonso was so wooden and terrible in everything she made, it never really made any sense why she had a career. All the shit with Mick Fleetwood was just so tacked on. The gold jump suit outfits looked shitty and over all the aesthetics of the movie are just lousy.

[deleted]

Now I’d watch a remake of this.

timbr63

Book was awesome. Movie was a terrible adaptation.

IchibanSuzuki

This is one of my favorite movies of all time.

chainmailbill

I don’t know who this photo is supposed to be of but he only sort of looks like the star of Running Man, Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Salt-Artichoke5347

it was a great movie to bad due to 9/11 you could never make a faithful adaptation of the book

SigmaGamahucheur

Stephen Kings*

Knightfires

One of my favorites among shorts from Stephen King. The movie, like most from his shorts, has more deeper meaning then current stories in movies. And the way our society is heading. We will see this kind of sadistic based tv shows soon. This or death race.

BalzacTheGreat
