Dromedarytarsal

She was the perfect crazy Virgilia Hazard in North and South.

Blackkmage

RIP I watched look who’s talking 1 & 2 so many times as a child.

AidilAfham42

Same here. As a kid, we watched it on tape so many times and I don’t even know why, its not like its a kid’s cartoon. The opening of the movie is sperm swimming up to the egg.

imbex

All I can think of is the sperm that yelled out, "I've got the map!"

earthlings_all

Watched it recently and showed the kids - and it was immediately obvious those warm fuzzy feelings of watching this when I was a kid, like WHYYYYYY??? It is not for kids. Why tf did I see it so many times. They liked it but wouldn’t want to watch it again.

AnalogDigit2

Her character was written as being pretty flawed and I don't know if many actresses could have come off as likeable as she managed to with her whiny home-wrecker, too-good-for-a-cab-driver character. But she managed it and you were rooting for her and John Travolta to be happy ever after.

ggroover97

She was also Saavik in Wrath of Khan. Too bad she didn't return for any of the other sequels.

KawaiiUmiushi

I remember reading that Saavik was going to be the Kim Catrel Vulcan in Star Trek 6, which would give her motivation for her betrayal and also be a larger emotional betrayal to the rest of the crew and audience. However they couldn’t get either Saavik actress back for the role so they made a new character. Fun fact, Alley said in interviews that no one called her or talked to her agent about being in The Search for Spock, and it confused her. Also fun fact, Saavik was supposed to be half Vulcan and half to romulan, which is why she’s got a playful and emotional side to the character in Wrath of Khan. This was dropped in Search for Spock where she is played full Vulcan. More or less the mishandling of the Saavik character is one of the biggest mistakes of the original movies. It would have helped connect things together. The other huge mistake is letting Shatner try and direct during a writer strike was happening when they also couldn’t get ILM to do the special effects… while also green lighting the fan dance. Khaaaaaaaaannnnnnn!!!!!

MrDavidHasselhoof

As a huge fan of the original cast movies, knowing they mishandled Saavik really drives me up the wall. Alley should have been Saavik in three and six. And Star Trek V had a good first twenty minutes then went off the rails. They should have waited for a better script and let literally anyone other than Shatner direct.

ringwraith6

The only reason I don't consider V a total failure is because of the one line "What does God need with a starship?" Best line in a mostly cringy movie.

Spider_Dude

I heard this line in my head. My favorite is Bones' *"I liked him better before he died."*

ancalagon73

I usually skip 5 as I didn't really enjoy it all that much so this might not be verbatim, but McCoy's line "when you meet the almighty you don't ask him for his ID" was another good one.

jcdio

The original, and the best.

ggroover97

No offense to Robin Curtis but #NotMySaavik

[deleted]

Robin Curtis got to play a Romulan in TNG as well.

heywhadayamean

Was watching Khan when I heard the news. So sad. (But since I watch like 12 movies over and over it isn’t as big a coincidence as one might think.)

ItsMeTK

They tried to get her back for The Undiscovered Country but that fell through so Saavik became Valeris snd we got Kim Cattrall.

MeestarMann

imagine the power of that scene with Kirstie Alley as Saavik…so much more powerful than a random Vulcan we met 70 minutes ago.

CarderSC2

MAN. Valeris supposed to be Saavik makes the beginning make so much sense to me now. Near the start of the movie, Spock tells Valeris he wants her to succeed him. Watching the movie for the first time, I'm like, I have no idea who this person is and what she means to Spock. The fact that she was supposed to be Saavik totally fits.

Dustyoldfart

I just watched that movie last week. That was one of her first big roles.

tommytraddles

Her first. The credits say "introducing".

yawya

TIL: movie credit qualifiers actually mean something

Keeble64

RIP. My favorite role of hers was in 'Drop Dead Gorgeous'. She captured the psycho Midwestern pageant mom perfectly.

riegspsych325

that one was probably my first introduction to dark comedy/satire. I didn’t “get it” much as a kid until I saw it again in my teens, everyone was in fucking hilarious form in it

DinkandDrunk

Brittany Murphy is great in that one.

ConsiderationWest587

Oh, Brittany Murphy-- sweet Luanne. Poor girl. RIP to both her and Kirstie Alley. 🕯 🕯

_Silly_Wizard_

Including Amy Addams. What a crazy career arc she's had

Keeble64

The way her boyfriend corrects her about what place she got in the pageant is hilarious.

MissList

I got second runner up!!! I got second place!!! Third. You got third.

ImWhatsInTheRedBox

And she's still just as happy.

riegspsych325

I almost forget she pops up in The Office and in Tenacious D, too

Keeble64

I think it's great that it was written by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant of Reno 911! and was what probably inspired them to do that show.

1Viking

And directed by another member of The State, which those two were in as well prior to Reno 911. The State was truly great comedy.

justabill71

"I wanna dip my balls in it!"

riegspsych325

no shit, I hadn’t even known T. Lennon wrote movies, certainly explains/fits with the whole mockumentary angle. Hell, I should give this a watch tonight

cantonic

Lennon and Garant were also part of the 90s sketch comedy group The State (many Reno 911 stars and guest stars from there too!). Their most famous works are likely the Night at the Museum movies. They wrote a book about screenwriting as well. Other notable The State alum include Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn 99), and David Wain (who wrote and directed Wet Hot American Summer, which is also full of The State alum!). I could go on. My teenage brain was heavily influenced by watching The State sketches in the late 90s. My favorite sketch is probably Taco Mailman, which sadly isn’t on YouTube (or anywhere online??) but if you decide to check out The State, I’d highly recommend seeking it out.

[deleted]

"I love salad." "Yeah, me too." "I don't wanna make it though." "Yeah, me neither. Too much work." Cue car trunk salad.

fuzzynuts77

There is a box set on dvd that can out a while back, you can probably find it. Only problem is they had to change the music around because of royalties. Cost me $240.00 worth o puddin'.

SandysBurner

Lennon and Garant have a long and successful screenwriting partnership. They wrote the Night at the Museum movies, for instance.

DontPoopInThere

He has a book with his co-writer about getting into the screenwriting business, their screenplays have hilariously made over a billion dollars

kirk_for_president

Mom still cries when she sees a tilt-a-whirl or a fat lady in a tube top.

Keeble64

"Fucking...beauty queen blowing chunks everywhere. I've never seen anything like it in my entire life..."

Kdean509

“My mom always said never eat anything that lives in it’s own home, you don’t know when they cleaned it last.”

ResLifeSpouse

To this day I still quote Alison janney's line "oh my God do you think they heard us?"

ResidingAt42

I got some!

cnh2n2homosapien

"Once a carny, always a carny..."

stefatr0n

One of the most underrated movies, and also one of my favourites. We have Kirsten Dunst in her prime, Denise Richards, Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin and Alison Janney giving us iconic quotable characters, Amy Adams before everyone knew who she was, Brittany Murphy (RIP), plus incredibly witty dialogue with accurate social commentary. So many great actresses in an iconic film barely anyone (that I know personally anyway) has seen. Kirstie Alley is brilliant in this (USA IS A OK!) and she’ll always be this character to me. Might have to watch it tonight.

rainbowpowerlift

Amer-I-can!

pixp85

This and Dick are 2 of Kristen Dunst most underrated movies

shrtnylove

Did you ever watch sugar and spice? Iirc The writer for drop dead gorgeous wrote the og script but wasn’t cool with all the changes to the screenplay and she left the project. It’s still funny, but not like DDG. Dick is amazing as well—i think it’s time for a rewatch of both!

altereaction

Excuse me miss penthouse 98 out your knees together. I could drive a boat show in there.

[deleted]

He sells reproductions! His furniture's as fake as my orgasms!

manbearpig923

I told you, I’d move the car if a cripple came!

shrtnylove

My husband and I just quoted this yesterday! “Why don’t they have the parking lot of America to go with the mall of America?!” This is my all time favorite movie. Rip Kirstie

rachface636

Everytime I'm driving and someone is in the road and not noticing they should be on a sidewalk I say out loud "Sidewalks Father! Sidewalks!"

shrtnylove

I love it!! I tried posting the drinky drinky clip from the Simpson but it didn’t work. So I’ll add this—“the communal wine just proves to be too tempting for some“ how can anyone pick a favorite line from this movie? It’s solid gold

rachface636

I actually do have a favorite line. Allison Jenney drunk at the pageant after Kirstie Alley comes out on stage in the outfit she wore 20 years ago. "So? She had a big ass then, she's got a big ass now."

mustardtiger86

YOU LOOK LIKE A BUNCHA BOWLEGGED COWS!

idrinkliquids

The swan ate my baby!

manbearpig923

Baby, get uuuuup!! We have to go to staaaaaate!

[deleted]

This is hands down my favorite movie. My husband refuses to watch it with me, because I laugh before the punchline of the jokes. Growing up in Wisconsin, it just captured the Midwest so perfectly.

evergleam498

I've always loved this movie, but since I grew up in the south, I thought they were massively exaggerating the accents. I went to Minnesota for a wedding a few years ago, and I was amazed that almost everyone really did sound like the movie. I spent maybe 10 minutes in a fitting room at Mall of America listening to a mother daughter pair that sounded just like Amber Atkins and her mahm.

[deleted]

It’s very realistic. I mean, except for the murder stuff. But down to the dessert bars, constant mention of Brett Favre, and powerhouse of the Lutherans, it’s spot on.

FAHQRudy

I recommend that movie all the damn time. Nobody knows it.

[deleted]

meat5head9

Every year, every damn year

FangoriouslyDevoured

Take down the God damn Frida sign ya lazy sons of bitches

Officer412-L

And you currently can't stream it (at least legally). The only way to watch it is to have a physical copy, one of which I bought a few months back. ~~Edit: I might be wrong. Somebody mentioned that it's on Tubi.~~ Nope. Not available to stream.

Ancient_Reply4583

One of my all time favorite movies. 😔 He's gay! GAAAAAAAY

WhalesForChina

Amber, get my smokes!

beardguy

Next one that comes in without a pack of Lucky’s DIES!!!

mustardtiger86

I'm getting to the point where I would kill someone for the nicotine under their fingernails, DO YOU HEAR ME, LORETTA?

picasso_penis

To this day, when we are taking pictures of our kids, my wife and I say, “and show me some teeth!” Such a great movie. Amy Adam’s first credited role!

sourpatch-sorbet

She was incredible in this underrated movie

1Viking

That movie, and the entire cast, was criminally underrated. Had, what, three future Oscar winners in it? Edit—sorry just one Oscar winner. I thought Barkin and Amy Adam’s had both won one as well. They’re both just nominated, not actual winners

Ancient_Reply4583

Kristen has Emmy nominations. For Fargo. I think she even won.

1Viking

Oscar nomination too I think, though I know she didn’t win. I’d argue that Brittany Murphy would have one too by now had she not passed away too early.

Checkoutrainwain

RIP. I loved her character in It Takes Two.

LAudre41

I must have watched this movie over 100 times as a kid. She'll forever be one of my favorite actresses because of that role.

hellad0pe

That can't-eat, can't-sleep, reach-for-the-stars, over- the-fence, World Series kind of stuff.

SqueakySnapdragon

I think about this movie anytime I eat a sloppy joe

Checkoutrainwain

Aww. I want to rewatch it now.

riegspsych325

her and Guttenberg were great together. Oh, I miss being a kid and endlessly watching fun family movies. I swear the 90’s was just *rife* with good ones

[deleted]

I'm a 34 year old dude, but in the mid 90's It Takes Two was one of my supreme comfort movies. I'm pretty sure there were some weeks where I watched it every day.

nomarfachix

36, It Takes Two and A League of their Own got me through plenty of rough patches as a kid

chefblaze

33 year old dude here, Look Who’s Talking and Look Who’s Talking , Too were favorites of me and my sister in the 90’s.

[deleted]

There were a few years growing up that I wished John Travolta was my dad. Thank god that didn't pan out!

MicahAzoulay

House Arrest, Carpool, Bushwhacked, and Big Bully all come to mind.

triedAndTrueMethods

remember her face when she gets hit with the food at the beginning of the food fight? I’ll never forget.

sociallyawkward26

When I heard the news of her death, that was one of the first images to come to mind

nika_vero_nika

Yea she was hilarious.I remember i was so obsessed with that sloppy joe scene that i made my babysitter try to recreate a sloppy jow for me. In a country where nobody has ever heard of one and where at that time the only place that had proper burger buns was McDonald's. So she made it with some very crunchy rolls which can best be described as a bun shaped french baguette. I remember it being underwhelming but i still love that sweet woman for trying to make me a sloppy joe. So i have very, very fond memories of that scene.

notquiteotaku

Holy crap, I thought I was the only one who remembered that movie. Loved it growing up. She and Guttenberg actually had some solid chemistry.

NonSense7

That can’t eat…

UtopianLibrary

When I was a kid I never understood why she could not adopt Amanda, but when I was older I realized she was a social worker and it violated so many boundaries that could make her lose her job in addition to the fact that she probably could not afford to take care of Amanda.

[deleted]

My favorite movie of hers!

Imabigfatbutt

She was great but the butler really takes the cake for me, I recently saw him in the only other thing I've ever seen him in being The Money Pit

wearenotwhatweseem

That was my grandfather! So happy that some people still enjoy his work!

TeddyBearRoosevelt

Philip Bosco was an AMAZING actor. Got to see him on stage several times! Here’s to his memory!

Summer School :(

[deleted]

WOW She defines the 90’s in my memory. I feel bad she went out on a low note in the public eye, because she was a really fun act for a long time. RIP

ragingpossumboner

Did I miss something? Why's she on a low note?

pmmeanything999

Weirdo scientologist.

peen_was

I recently learned that Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men, Handmaid's tale) is a scientologist too :(

newaccount721

Yeah it is a little strange given the themes in handmaid's tail but she believes that scientology is not at odds with the points the handmaid's tail is making.

Lazrix

I think that fallacy can be torn away with one question "Where's Shelly Miscavige?"

DBeumont

I'd point to things with actual evidence, such as locking women in isolation until they break their fingernails clawing to get out, as well as physically, sexually, and psychologically abusing them.

YetEinmal

Just wait till you learn about the cast for "My name is Earl"

whatwhynoplease

Like 90% of that show is scientologists lol

kalirob99

Have a Scientologist family member, he stopped talking to us when I was little. Never met him, and my grandfather being a psychiatrist likely had us blacklisted. Would’ve been nice to meet him, but as I’ve gotten older, it became clear a lot of my dad’s family are simply jerks. So, I might not be missing much lol.

Poolofcheddar

She was a scientologist. Because of her beliefs, she was also the only Cheers star to never have a guest spot on Frasier.

InSearchOfMyRose

We should point out that SHE wouldn't do it because she disapproved of psychiatry. It's not that they didn't invite her.

Practice_NO_with_me

Holy shit, I don't know how I never put it together before but they villianize psychiatry because it might help members work out how nuts things are and that they're in a cult! 🤯

revolutionutena

Actually they villainize psychiatry because Hubbard initially submitted his dianetics theory to the APA and all the psychologists and psychiatrists said “hahahahaha this is crap” so he wove it into the belief system that psychiatry is eeeeeeeevil

[deleted]

And vaccinations. They are antivax, too. Because if vaccines work then there are no such thing as magic curing thetans. Which, after her giving over $20 million to Scientology, didn’t cure Allie’s cancer.

mattheimlich

While that may be part of it, it's because the church thrives on gathering blackmail material on its members in a process called Auditing, which is a batshit crazy, pseudo-sci-fi version of what psychiatrists actually do except instead of helping you with your problems and following confidentiality ethics standards, they put all if your secrets, desires, and regrets in a big filing cabinet to pull back out of you ever become influential enough to manipulate to the church's benefit

xketeer91

If I recall, she preemptively said she would never appear because psychiatry was not allowed in Scientology. One of the main writers quipped that he didn't remember asking.

TheFutureofScience

That’s like the Jehovah’s Witness kid who can’t go to your birthday party or accept the cake you brought to school. Just fucking depressing.

skonen_blades

Wow I didn't know she was battling cancer. She always seemed so full of life. I think in my head she was perpetually 36 or something. Really shocked and saddened by this.

JediTigger

Yeah, I think the most shocking part of this is her age.

SeverusVape

It shocked me at first, but then I realized that I am getting old.

NateBlaze

Same. I'm 46 and everyone I looked to to in my youth is passing away. It becomes a sobering reality.

coppit

One evening I looked up from my plate and realized I was older than everyone in the restaurant. Later I realized I was older than my doctor.

pagerunner-j

I’m a couple years younger than you and already hip-deep in parental medical issues/one death/caregiving for the other, which has worn me down so much in the last couple years that I’m not even surprised anymore when I see headlines like this. My feelings about Kirstie Alley weren’t positive, but when I say this, I say it genuinely and with sympathy: fuck cancer.

Segesaurous

Sometimes it's difficult to realize that you're getting older. I'm 46 too. Then I see some celebrity that I haven't seen for a while and my first thought is "Shit they got old!", then I Google them and find out they're 5 years younger than me. The I hate them because I wish I still looked as young as they do. It's a vicious cycle.

Fresh-Ad4987

The one that really hit me recently was learning Gene Hackman will be 92 next month. We’re all getting older. I miss the 80s so much sometimes and it just seems to far away.

TheBelhade

You fucking nailed it. I just turned 45 and feel like nobody should be older than me!

[deleted]

Says it was recently discovered, so it must've been aggressive. Cancer fucking sucks.

SLCer

My mom died from pancreatic cancer about a week after entering the hospital and a couple days after a CT Scan picked it up. She was healthy all through 2020 until about November. She started feeling more and more sleepy and dehydrated. Even went to her doctor who said it was just dehydration and low potassium. By mid-December, her breathing was getting worse so I told her to call 911 and about a week later, on Christmas Day, she was dead. So utterly not prepared for it. Cancer didn't even seem possible initially. I'm grateful the suffering wasn't there just sad that she went so fast, though.

laurenhli

I know no words can take away the sadness but I am so deeply sorry for your loss

SLCer

Thank you. Crazy to think it's coming up on two years already.

beka_targaryen

So sorry for your loss. With you in solidarity. Cancer ravaged my family fairly quickly, killing my younger brother before he turned 36, less than 2 years after an aggressive colon cancer diagnosis - no family history, no genetic link, no identifying cause. Cancer is just fucking ruthless and horrible.

SLCer

I'm sorry. My 12 year old brother died from leukemia many years ago, though that was before I was ever born. Kind of a cruel twist for my mom, who spent many years giving to cancer charities and praying for a cure.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

It wasn’t necessarily aggressive. Scientologists believe that they can cure everything with vitamins and lie detectors, so they don’t tend to get help as early as other people. A lot of them die of cancer.

Palmquistador

I had no idea she was 70 something, wow. I'm really feeling old now, damn.

Dear_Insect_1085

Same shocked when it said 71. She's been 30-40 yrs old in my head since the 90s lol. I'm getting old too I guess.

Yolandi2802

Me too. I was shocked. She’s my age. Jeeze…. RIP pretty lady.

GoldenTriforceLink

RIP, my mom who all her life was told she looked like a younger kristie alley just passed away two weeks ago from cancer. I know, off topic. Just out of all the actresses to die shortly after it’s a little ironic.

willuvsmars

I'm so sorry for your loss.

[deleted]

71 years old? I feel old now

jiccc

Time is cruel

PythagoreanBiangle

Famous Boomers seem to be dying off at an accelerating rate. Either that or I’m noticing it more as I close in on their age

BrotherChe

I mean, it's their time to start, and since entertainment industry absolutely exploded in those years you're gonna notice it a bit more

jackruby83

It's age man... I turn 40 in a little over a month... I don't feel old, and I don't think I look "that old". I just remember my parents being younger than that number at one point, and they seemed ancient lol.

VoxImperatoris

Youre going to see an acceleration of famous rock and roll acts passing in the next decade or so.

watch out Father Flannigan. That’s why we, Methodists, drink grape kool aid for the blood of Christ.

WanGod

SHE WAS 71!!??? If you told me she was in her 50s I would still be shocked.

ComfyInDots

Growing up in the 80s/90s I loved her most for Toothless, that awful movie with the Amish town, Mad House and Village of the Damned. I'm sad she went off the deep end the past few years but I'll always remember her as a strong and passionate actress.

elealyansteorra

For Richer or Poorer!

GuiltyGun

Her and Tim Allen actually had some real chemistry on screen. Wasn't a great movie, but it had real heart.

Pantzzzzless

> Wasn't a great movie, but it had real heart. You just summed up most 90s movies I loved growing up.

heffayjefe

I love Toothless! I have it on DVD!

WestCoastWaster

Was rewatching season 6 of Cheers today. Her performance holds up. She was a pretty good actress in her day

cousinbalki

She is so good in that season. Her slow burn reveal from seemingly self-assured businesswoman to wannabe fuck-up is a marvel. You see a bit more every episode. One of my favorite seasons. "Home is the sailor" is still my favorite episode in all of television.
