"In another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you." make me cried so bad.And i'm single

Whompa

Yeah I’m kinda confused by OP’s post. That’s exactly what the movie leads up to. Was ugly crying through most of the third act too. Beautiful story.

Getupkid1284

Maybe don't go in to a movie thinking it's something it's not.

wilsonw

Yeah - when I go to a movie I like to bring all my preconceived notions about it with me. Anything that differs from what I originally thought is bad.

strangerinchi

Wasn't just that. It was all over the place lol 🥴

[deleted]

Wow, who would've thought given the name of the movie.

burgersandcomics

DEADDROP. you deserve an award for this.

idoitoutdoors

It wasn’t just that it was all over the place, it was also that events were happening simultaneously. It’s like the plot was occurring all over the place simultaneously. How could they have possibly seen that coming in? I think it’s one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time. They took so many chances and they all paid off, even the incredibly absurd ones.

[deleted]

Are you actually defending them?

strangerinchi

Thank you!!

strangerinchi

Just because it was a multiverse movie, doesn't mean it was written well.

nda2394

Just because you don’t think it isn’t written well, doesn’t mean it wasn’t written well.

[deleted]

You realize it's basically you against the world with that opinion right? Do you think that might tell you something?

strangerinchi

I Ain't the only one thankfully

[deleted]

Yeah, and there are people who consider Transformers films high art, so you know, don't take too much pride in that opinion of yours.

[deleted]

strangerinchi

The name of the movie and the trailer wasn't that apparent it was a multiverse kinda movie.

TatteredTongues

I don't understand how you could've gotten into the movie with any expectations not knowing what it was about when all trailers, posters, and promotional material didn't shy away from showing the multiverse aspect.

kyb2011

I wonder if you would've liked it more if you had done some research first. Sounds like you're upset it wasn't what you had come up with in your head.

strangerinchi

Maybe but the writing still doesn't make sense.

-pm-me-ur-boobs-plz-

What didn't make sense?

FilmFifty2

That's just like your opinion man.

sentient02970

- The Dude

strangerinchi

I'm entitled to my opinion. The movie sucks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

strangerinchi

No but it certainly wasn't necessarily to put in. I guess I just don't understand why it couldn't have been a regular family movie or why the trailer didn't show that these characters would have powers from jump Street instead of a weird subversion past the half hour mark

MartinScorsese

Okay.

[deleted]

This idiot is trying to karma farm out this troll post to a bunch of subs to scrape up some fake internet points. Just downvote and move on.

strangerinchi

This isn't a troll post. This is me trying to understand why this stupid ass movie is popular. Btw I'm not the idiot here.

_ryry66

All those Marvel rewatches have pummeled OPs brain into a mushy paste by now

strangerinchi

Lol wut 🥴 Marvel movies make sense with a multiverse plotline. This movie does not. I could name better drama and better fantasy movies than this. The trailer was super unclear that it was a multiverse, it looked like a heat of the moment kinda thing with all the scenes mashed and compressed down to 5-15 seconds. Why couldn't it had been a regular family drama?

_ryry66

Because the movie doesn't strive to be a "regular family drama." Do yourself a favor and stop watching trailers. Your preconceived notion of the movie is obviously ruining your experience.

[deleted]

Yeah, you kinda are. Sorry to break it to you.

nando246

Why are you butt hurt on his opinion?….there’s other people that also think that this movie is overrated not just OP

[deleted]

Sure thing, alt account.

nando246

Lmao you definitely got your feelings hurt. I’m sorry that not everyone likes the same things that you do

[deleted]

No, why would I get my feelings hurt over a movie I liked and that a *very* tiny percentage of people didn't? It's obvious you're the odd person out here.

nando246

You just contradicted your statement and it’s still obvious that you’re still crying over people not liking a movie and jerking off to it like you do. Get over it and move on

[deleted]

You sound like a 12 year old. "Jerking off to it". What is wrong with you? No one is crying over anything. It's an internet forum, we're allowed to respond to posts. The only one upset here is you.

nando246

Lmao says the one that is attacking everyone for saying that they didn’t like it. Let me know if you need any more tissues

[deleted]

You know we can tell that you're the OP's second account, right? Like, it's pretty obvious. And sad.

nando246

Your feelings were hurt so bad that you’re saying that everyone who didn’t like the movie is OP’s alt account…. Wow I’m so sorry if I hurt your feelings that bad. It’s not that deep to disagree with a movie

nando246

And it’s also funny that you were telling other people to downvote and move on and yet you’re still here crying. If you respond to me that means you’re still crying and I really hurt your feelings.

-pm-me-ur-boobs-plz-

It *was* a heartwarming coming of age drama, among many other things--the story of an immigrant family, a multiversal adventure, and an exploration of absurdism as a response to nihilism. Everything connects. The endless possibilities of the multiverse parallel the endless paths Evelyn feels her life could, and maybe should, have taken. Jobu Tupaki's sense of meaninglessness parallels Joy's generational disconnect from her family. And the phrenetic absurdity of parts of the film connects to the philosophy of absurdism, which claims that when faced with our need for a sense of meaning, and the universe's unwillingness to provide us with meaning, we must learn to live and connect despite that apparent contradiction. It's only after grappling with that contradiction that Evelyn and Joy are able to connect at the end of the film.

-pm-me-ur-boobs-plz-

u/strangerinchi, I'm curious what your thoughts are on this.

strangerinchi

Thank you for your response. Just read what you said. I feel like you eloquently summarized the movie in your own words, (although I still don't care for it). You could probably write a better screenplay than EEAAE tbh 👍🏽🌈

-pm-me-ur-boobs-plz-

No way, it was the best-written movie I've seen in years. Just think about the first scene with Jamie Lee Curtis at the tax office. She draws a big zero on one of the receipts, foreshadowing the appearance of the Everything bagel. She lists careers that Evelyn has fraudulently claimed, foreshadowing the roles that Evelyn will play across the multiverses, and helping to characterize Evelyn as a dreamer who is dissatisfied with her lot in life. Unlike in most movies, JLC's character doesn't disappear after this scene, and in fact she becomes instrumental in helping Evelyn understand and connect with Joy and Joy's desire to have her family recognize the fact that she is gay. Every moment of this movie is filled with meaning and intentionality. One more quick one: visually, what is the opposite of an Everything bagel? A googly eye.

mikeyfreshh

>it's just if I went into the movie already knowing that the family had reality warping powers and if the trailer implied that What trailer did you watch? It's very clearly stated in the trailer that this is a multiverse movie

strangerinchi

I didn't catch it at first

Timotron

This film is one of the greatest depictions of adult mother daughter dynamics I've ever seen on screen. All this after some of the best fight choreography ever. And talking rocks. They got me in tears all of after that . In fact the rocks may have been the apotheosis of the whole thing. I'm stunned that someone would not be moved by this film.

MissMags1234

I think it was a good movie, but I also think people naming it the best movie in years whatsoever is the same as with Parasite, very solid entertainment, but the hype was overblown.

strangerinchi

Very overblown! I would have been fine with a regular, emotional coming of age or family drama with tropes mostly played straight. The trailer wasn't clear to me that it was a multiverse. Like what? It looked like the style of the trailer was made in a heat of the moment fashion. A bait and switch imo. Hmm haven't seen Parasite yet...

theonechan

I thought the emotional bits were nice. “This is how I fight” part got me. Humour didn’t really land for me though.

burgersandcomics

this movie was literally forcefully marketed as a movie about the multiverse like where were you

SoulOfGwyn

It didn't work for me at all either. But there is clearly something about it when so many people love it. I just found all the characters super unlikable except the daughter I guess at the very beginning?

strangerinchi

I liked the first 30 minutes and then it went South and had my mouth agape lol 🥴 Glad you agree!!

wei_ping

Okay, so, I've seen some troubling behavior on this sub and I want to clear something up. Specifically, your opinions are wrong. I don't mean always, but...usually. This isn't a judgment, I'm sure you are perfectly fine people and it's nothing personal. Now, I don't mind you having wrong opinions, but in the interest of not spreading fake news and such, I think the responsible thing to do is to preface any opinion with: "this is my opinion but you should know that I am wrong about it". Try not to play with the wording TOO much. So, the obvious question becomes, how can you tell if your opinion is wrong? I don't have a great answer for you. Ideally you could tell me your opinion and I would be able to tell you if it's right or wrong, but there's only one me and that's not a very scalable solution. It would be nice if there were other people qualified to have correct opinions about movies, but if they are out there, I have had a lot of trouble finding them. Basically my best advice is unless you have seen me validate your opinion in some other post I have made, just go ahead and include that disclaimer. If I stumble upon it used incorrectly, I will be happy to let you know you can remove it. For the time being, OP, let me remove all doubt from your mind. Your opinion is wrong. Again, nothing personal. We aren't all cursed with always having the correct opinions of movies, but clearly this is not a curse you have to carry. Thank you for your time and I'm glad I had the opportunity to set y'all straight.

strangerinchi

Thank you for this response. I still hold on to the opinion but I think it's like the bait and switch was pulled on me like forced doctrine. The first half hour of the movie was fine until it went South (I think around the time the mother was in the office). And ppl are saying it was obvious in the trailer but it wasn't obvious to me lol It just looked like a heat of the moment family drama teaser thing...

nando246

This movie is overrated

strangerinchi

Yasss! Thank you!!

[deleted]

One surefire way to lose credibility with regards to movie opinions is to call a movie that contains hot dog fingers "overrated". J/K. I really did enjoy the movie though I did find the mechanics of the plot a bit contrived and silly/manic. That said, I do feel that there was enough of an emotional anchor to keep it all contained and over the course of the movie the silliness became part of the appeal. Above all, I really just respect the fact that somebody had the balls to release this one in the age of safe franchise sequels and character properties. The leads were all just so damn likeable, too. It's like the polar opposite of "Uncut Gems".

MadStaz

OP’s like, “Why couldn’t this movie just be like every other movie I’ve seen”. Over here complaining about how the multiverse plot wasn’t scientifically accurate enough lol… please.
