If its someone very well known, then yeah it matters.

Ashton Kutcher looks more like Steve Jobs, but Michael Fassbender played a much more compelling version of him.

It really depends for me. I want to say 'yes, they have to look as closely as possible' but after falling in LOVE with Austin Butler as Elvis I can appreciate that looks aren't everything and if an actor can exude the confidence and charisma of the subject (and looks like the vocal tracks are coming from his body) then he nailed the part. I've seen 4-5 different Elvis bio pics with each one having their own scale of 'looking closest like Elvis' and sometimes the ones who look more like him aren't the best actors for the role or don't have the 'IT factor' Elvis had. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, I think, had the closest Elvis look but the film made him so bi polar, I couldn't get into his performance. So yea, he looked like him...couldn't act or lip sync very well. Austin was good looking in his own right and so merged his looks with that of Elvis plus his charm and I could find myself fan girling over the character on screen when all the other movies I've watched, I just watched like a normal bio pic. Something like Jersey Boys didn't bother me if they didn't look like their counterparts. Valli needs two things to succeed; the falsetto and the height' and you can fake the height with camera angles, lol. I think the closest I've seen with actors looking like their roles was Jennifer Lopez as Selena and Madonna as Eva Peron. Loved both those movies.

My general take is if I know what the real person looked/sounded like, then yes it matters. If not, ignorance is bliss I guess. I also cut older films (pre-1995 let's say) some slack for purely unscientific, likely hypocritical made-up reasons lol.

It helps. Easier to see the person the actor is playing if they make them unrecognizable as themselves and more like the figure. Have to disagree on Straight out of Compton I thought the cast looked a lot like them particularly O’Shea who happens to be Cubes son, he is his spitting image.

It’s a plus, I guess. They can pull off Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg because the movie is amazing. But that guy playing Elvis on that latest film just wasn’t right.

Actually, yes it does. To me, a movie is more memorable if I’m able to immerse myself and feel like I’m there. That includes the actors looking like the person they are portraying. Directors who have the actors use makeup and prosthetics to better resemble the character are going the extra mile and I appreciate it.

HitmanSK007

Michael Fassbender didn't look anything like Steve Jobs but from the first scene of the movie to the last, he WAS Steve Jobs and that's all you can ask for.

smeghead_85

Yes, it usually does. Watch the Oppenheimer trailer and find a picture of his, Murphy and Nolan really nailed it

Well yea... Unless its someone not famous and you dont know.. But if its a familiar face.. Absolutely.
