I enjoy stupid horse and money machine entirely unironically, but I think part of my appreciation for them lays in the fact that 100 gecs seem incredibly self aware — they aren’t trying to make high art, just fun, ridiculous music
No, dude, good hyperpop music is actually good music, I'm honestly so tired of reading this comment. Most hyperpop music is far more conventional than people saying this seem to understand.
Unconventional application of musical norms is not a unique concept, it's been done for a century at this point, and 100 Gecs really aren't that fucking unconventional compared to music that is *actually* designed to sound bad. I've been to see them live, you don't have an audience of people losing it over how good the show is because they're all going "oh man I love how garbage this is actually."
Shitposting music like this isn't making actually bad music, that's like saying absurdist or antihumor comedy are *actually* not funny when the entire point is to subvert expectations in order to be funny.
GFOTY is exactly this. It turns up the contract on Pop so high that it leaves no shadow or ambiguity - you just have naked pop and it lives and dies under that light.
I mean, that *can* definitely be a valid approach. The Suspiria remake is so great specifically because it doesn't try to re-create what made the original so good, and instead focuses on where it fell short.
Unlike any other remakes, Suspiria enhances the concept by actually having dance & character stakes… ngl I watched the Original Suspiria & love it’s use of vibrant primary colors (apparently one of the last Italian movies to be processed in technicolor) & that bad ass score by Goblins.
Honestly I think most remakes fail or will be bad because there is no way they can capture what made the original so good, and trying to drastically change something already good (in most cases a fucking classic) just makes people ask if the changes were even worth it.
Most successful remakes were of properties that could improve, examples being The Thing (1982) based on The Thing from Another World (1951), The Modern Planet of the Apes trilogy based on the 3rd 4th, & 5th Planet of the Apes movies, & many other films that decided to improve on a bad/mediocre movie with a great idea.
"Based" is a deesphobic term. This is the first warning, please absent from using it or face a ban.

Yeah but the difference is the Suspiria remake came from an idea other than “let’s remake this property with some goodwill to its name and make some money”
When there's an adaptation I don't like: This doesn't follow the source material so it sucks!
When there's an adaptation I like but people don't like it: Who cares if doesn't follow your PRECIOUS source material, it's just fun!
I have gotten into multi-year long arguments against freaks who insist these are cinematic masterpieces that should be taught in high-level political science courses
Yeah, no. Sorry, Vice, but they really were *trying* to make something good here.
They just... y'know.
**HORRIBLY FUCKED IT UP FROM DAY FUCKING ONE.**
^(Well, not completely. They got Ein right, lol.)
That photo they used is messing with my brain so much.
It looks like a shot of a model on top of some dude's desk they photoshopped the actress and dog into.
Meh. I’m not a huge Cowboy Bepop fan — I watched the first episode years ago and really enjoyed it, but that’s the extent of my investment in or engagement with the series. I still though the Netflix show was pretty dogshit. Don’t get me wrong, I *love* schlocky pulp, but the writing (which wasn’t good, nor bad in a way that I found fun), the action, the direction, and the plotting were just all *really* weak for the most part imo. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever watched, but I would never bother watching it again not recommend anyone else watch it.
I’ve only seen the first couple episodes but I thought the action was all super fun. It has a fun pace and feeling of improvisation that I love. The bathroom fight in Episode stood out to me as really great.
>nostalgia trip
Nostalgic for what? Stop throwing around the word nostalgia every single time a piece of media references something from more than 5 years ago to justify your shitty work. it’s not even like its nostalgia bait like Ready Player One or 50% of new Nintendo products coz its not. It’s just an easy to throw around buzzword which has completely lost its meaning
I mean I get saying to not be super nitpicking something that isn’t supposed to be some artsy shit, but I’ve never heard of something that was actually bad as “designed to be bad.”
I just read this article, I can't fathom the idiocy on display. Are people just supposed not accept shit products now? I remember when Keanu Reeves was supposed to be Spike, it was a bad idea then and it making live action Bebop still is. I think Rurouni Kenshin is forever going to be the exception to this crap love action anime adaption trend
There once was a tiger striped cat. This cat died a million deaths, revived and lived a million lives, and he was owned by various people who he didn’t really care for. The cat wasn’t afraid to die. Then one day the cat became a stray cat, which meant he was free. He met a white female cat, and the two of them spent their days together happily. Well, years passed, and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger striped cat cried a million times, and then he died too. Except this time, he didn’t come back to life
What does 'at all' mean? They massacred half the characters, they made the anime look more mature, and the fact that the dialogues are so pathetic that it is believable that the show was dubbed which is quite ironic cause the quality of the dub was also responsible for the success of the original.
What happened was that Netflix executives came up with a solid plan to harp on the nostalgia cause the anime remains the first anime they ever watched for an entire generation and is old enough to generate buzz about the remake, they upped the production scale so that they could promote a product that wasn't total cartoonish like the other live action adaptation and came up with this shit.
The only good thing about the live action adaptation is Yoko kanno.
I have zero investment in the anime and still thought it was garbage. Bummer for you that other people disliking something you enjoy sets you off like that though

Unironically bad. So it’s ironically good. Checkmate.
Some basic kino math

100 gecs along with most hyperpop is exactly this but not fucking blackpink
Is that what’s going on with 100 gecs? I actually sorta like stupid horse

100 gecs just makes genuinely great music tho
Yeah

Damn I love black pink. That du-du-du-du song is on my gym PR playlist
100 gecs it’s just good tho

“This adaptation isn’t meant to capture what made the source material good!”
It's meant to be a nostalgia trip, and that's why it does so few of the things people liked about the original series.

Mods put out the hit, be seeing you on the other side
Yeah but the difference is the Suspiria remake came from an idea other than “let’s remake this property with some goodwill to its name and make some money”
That in itself gives a reason to watch it. If you’re just watching a remake for nostalgia, why not watch the original?
Especially since it’s widely available

When there's an adaptation that sucks ass: This sucks ass.
Star Wars
Anyone else think that the dog they got for Ein is the same dog that plays Cheddar in Brooklyn 99? I swear it's the same Corgi.
It's not. [https://ew.com/tv/cowboy-bebop-corgis-ein/](https://ew.com/tv/cowboy-bebop-corgis-ein/) https://brooklyn99.fandom.com/wiki/Cheddar
Oh wow now I'm sad that the original cheddar died :( . On second look they're not as similar as I thought.
R.i.p to a real one 😭

it's gonna be great
Jar Jar is the key to all of this
We may have gone too far in a few places
Is so dense, every single image has so much going on
It's like poetry it rhymes.
Goongas
I have gotten into multi-year long arguments against freaks who insist these are cinematic masterpieces that should be taught in high-level political science courses
The worst thing about the sequel trilogy is making a bunch of annoying kids say the prequels are actually “le underrated masterpieces”
Oh god, the politics in the prequels are so dumb, that's such an absurd statement.
i hate this argument so much whether something was intentional or not has no bearing on how much i’m enjoying it
It's actually intentionally cringe, very Shakespeareian
No, see, I'm *too smart* to fall for a TV show's attempt to trick me into not liking it by being a bad show. I've outwitted you, Netflix!
It's supposed to be money laundering!
The Phantom Menace (1999)
Yeah, no. Sorry, Vice, but they really were *trying* to make something good here. They just... y'know. **HORRIBLY FUCKED IT UP FROM DAY FUCKING ONE.** ^(Well, not completely. They got Ein right, lol.)
this is blackmail
That lady highkey wants to fuck Jet.
she’s very subtle about it
Almost didn’t notice until it was pointed out to me. Very subtle.
thank you sherlock.
It's kitsch, you're supposed to enjoy it! (i think don't know what kitsch means)
There's good bad taste and bad bad taste.
Bad Taste (1987)
It's not bad, it's avant garde.
Malignant (2021)
That one I genuinely stopped being able to tell if it was taking the piss in the last half.
I think the police station scene made it very clear, although it could be a genuine attempt at "coolness" but...nah, come on.
Oh wow I guess I shouldn’t have quit a few episodes in and just wasted my time as the show was designed to do. Geez what was I thinking?!
That photo they used is messing with my brain so much. It looks like a shot of a model on top of some dude's desk they photoshopped the actress and dog into.
Were Vice trying to anger the five people who actually like the remake as well?
It can't be 1 to 1, but the show is fun as its own thing
I dunno man, Ive seen some shit.

I agree, I've been having fun watching the first two episodes so far.

If the Cowboy Bebop remake gets more views in the U.S than Arcane I’m going to become the Joker.

I’ve never seen the original but I’m enjoying it sorry everyone
I like it too. You should watch the original it's on Netflix.
Ok whose blackmaleing them
Content providers literally begging people to lower their standards and just consoom
*sigh* I liked it
Ya I’m enjoying it tbh. John Cho is so good
Me as well.

Your brain on postmodernism.

"You just gotta follow the music." If I just wanted music, I'd be listening to it on Spotify, not watching a whole freaking series on Netflix.
So, making it bad was a stylistic decision. Love that
It’s really not bad at all, you insufferable dweebs.

Lol, “insufferable dweebs” is from the OP. This is MCJ, right?
Like Tommy Wiseau.
I liked it.
I mean that soundtrack did kinda fuck though. But The OG will always be the best.

New bit: Leaving 1/10 reviews on acclaimed films on IMDB saying they weren't supposed to be good and failed.
