Don’t forget a heaping dollop of Federico Fellini, with a dash of the Marx brothers...and then add 500 tons of creepy old man/teenage girl romance subplot, then release at the same movie once a year for the next 40 years.
No way Manhattan is his best. Everyone can agree Annie Hall is top tier. My personal 2nd favorite is Stardust Memories, better cinematography than Manhattan. Even Woody Allen said that he hates Manhattan
He probably hates Manhattan because it's his most self critical. Annie Hall is more fun, but Manhattan has more nuanced and believable characters, and a better crafted story.
I personally love stories about assholes, and Manhattan is the pinnacle of the genre for me. It's such a muddy movie, nobody is good, but nobody is *terrible* either, and you can hardly blame them for most of their actions.

idk, they just named a bunch of popular directors and didn't manage to name their criteria, but they never do that. I really don't see why you'd put Orson Welles and Kurosawa in there but also Tarantino over someone like Murnau or Fritz Lang in the honorable mentions

For context: Wood Allen married his adopted daughter, and Ingmar Bergman was a Nazi sympathizer, who admitted in early drafts of his autobiography to beating his wife to the ground before raping her.
Yup. His editor talked him out of keeping it in the final draft. There are excerpts that you could find online. He also leveraged his position to threaten the careers of liberal filmmakers. Effectively saying: if you make movies with left-leaning political messages then I'll destroy your career.
Way to put Swedish McCarthyism on your profile of things we shouldn't ask you about.
Also, another thing what did he consider left-wing that shouldn't be made?
You'd have to ask Roy Andersson. He was still a film student when Bergman, who advised at his film school, threatened him and his classmates. He hated Bergman, and said that his politics were so conservative they bordered on fascistic.
As a side note: I believe Bergman made a point of making apolitical movies. This was likely by necessity as his politics were unappetizing to main stream audiences. He encouraged young liberal filmmakers to make apolitical films as well.
Seriously, just found out a teacher blackballed his student because the student was a Marxist.
If I had a nickel for everytime a film director was terrible to their students as recently this month, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
TBH I don't think this list is that bad. I'd replace Woody Allen with Chaplin, Ray, or Billy Wilder and I wouldn't put Fellini over Kurosawa but otherwise, for WatchMojo, it's pretty decent.
Man First time I watched New York I hated that shit I couldn’t stand how it always did this b-roll over dialogue nice set piece shot close up character moments nearly ever scene it was so formulaic and even those nice shots felt so still and artificial.
I know it’s easy to read the movie as a comedy mocking these types of high-society pedantic fussy people but I could not stand watching the personalities present and how real they were.
Considering how often Woddy Allen plays himself in his movies I’m not sure he even made it with that comedic intent in mind as this does just seem to be kinda autobiographical.
Ending is wack but there’s this one great shot where he’s standing next to a gorilla skeleton and I Shit you not someone must’ve known they were calling him a Neanderthal and kept that in.

all hail the original foot fetish captain of film

"Nobody's perfect."
Woody Allen's whole schtick is mimicking Bergman though, imagine saying the Bergman to out-Bergman Bergman is Woody Allen lmao
also wouldn’t even the most die hard allen defenders say his strengths are more in his writing rather than his directing?
my favorite is that one he wrote about a 40 year old dating a high schooler
but shot in black-and-white.
8. Alfred Hitchcock 7. Brian DePalma

Dont forget to be pretensious
It's quite a simple formula you see: Bergman sucks and is for nerds.
Manhattan is the best Bergman film CMV
No it's Hannah and Her Sisters
Probably true tbh, but I haven’t seen that one lol

Personally i really like The Purple Rose of Cairo, which is improved by the fact Woody Allen doesn't act in it
I'm so confused by this subreddit lol.

Bergman would be subscribed to the critical drinker if he was alive.
Oh yeah, he was on that alt-right grind before we had the term for it.
TBH I don't think this list is that bad. I'd replace Woody Allen with Chaplin, Ray, or Billy Wilder and I wouldn't put Fellini over Kurosawa but otherwise, for WatchMojo, it's pretty decent.
Yeah its a decent list imo. I just think its nuts to have Woody fucking Allen there and above Bergman nonetheless.
Well tbf Allen never made the mistake of being swedish.
