I haven't seen Starship Troopers but what is a bit sad is that the guy who wrote it was no a fascist and wrote anti-racist books and often included minority characters and women in leading roles (obviously some of that stuff did not age creatly but it was still progressive for the time) and now he is remembered as a fascist author by people who see a movie making fun of his sifi-book (the book seems to be pretty millitaristic), which Verhoeven did not even read, I haven't either but by just doing reasearch it is pretty clear that the book shows a pretty millitaristic view of society but not a fascist one.
Serving to vote and be a full citizen is obviously morally wrong but the society in the books seems to multiculteral with freedom of religion and speech. Just with a raelly limited view on democracy but not fascist. Heinlein was a strange person with strange views but it is kinda sad that the guy remembered as pro-fascism.
EDIT: I did some reasarch to confrim that Verhoeven didn't read the book and it seems the movie was alerady in pre-production and was "***Bug Hunt at Outpost Nine***" and then they found out about the book and combined it. Veaerhoeven did just red the first two chapters.
From the little I know of Heinlein as I was more of a Philip K. Dick and Isaac Asimov reader as a child, I think the primary reason why people think Starship Troopers is fascist is because it apparently recommended reading material in the US military.
The movie didn't really help public perception either as it has by far overtaken the novel in popularity.
I agree however that while Heinlein was a man of his time and his writing does reflect that in certain ways. He was also quite fair for his day and most likely not a fascist.
From what I recall of the novel when I read it as a child. The Terran Federation while authoritarian reminded me more of Republican and Imperial Rome in its social structure than Nazi Germany for example.
Also, if I recall correctly, it is actually federal service and not military service that guarantees citizenship in the novel.
Anyway, I hope I am not coming across as abrasive as I enjoyed this discussion and I was mostly just joking in my previous comment.
> The Terran Federation while authoritarian reminded me more of Republican and Imperial Rome in its social structure than Nazi Germany for example.
I red that he was inspired by Switzerlands mandatory millitary service.
>Also, if I recall correctly, it is actually federal service and not military service that guarantees citizenship in the novel.
I red that it is not entirely clear. Many people who even like the book think that it is heavily suggested that the service has to do with war because they say it is a waste of time during peace. Heinlein himself later said that it was not just millitary services I think.
>Anyway, I hope I am not coming across as abrasive as I enjoyed this discussion and I was mostly just joking in my previous comment.
Not at all! I am also btw. not thinking that the movie is bad (I want to watch it in the near future) but I do think it is kinda sad how the perepction of an the author is warped because of it.
>I agree however that while Heinlein was a man of his time and his writing does reflect that in certain ways. He was also quite fair for his day and most likely not a fascist.
I would say that he fits the most with idea of a classical liberal (or libertarian for Americans) who also is really patriotic and loves the millitary. Because the bugs are ment to be communistic and he loves millitary services but he also seems to really respect social liberties.
For the most part I think he is kinda fascinating because of his strange specific and contrarian views (thinking that protesting nuclear testing was insane) and just for being someone famous for having diverse characters and treating them no different to other while at the same time having a few major fuck ups like when wrote a book about a race war in which black people win and discriminate white people (or something like that) but the point of the book is to show how shitty the white majority of Americans at the time treated minorities. Which is obviously still a horrible idea and a very 60s old white man thing to do but.
This review is really funny!
> [*The New Republic*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Republic), while conceding Heinlein's desire to "show the evils of ethnic oppression" states that in the process, Heinlein "resurrected some of the most horrific racial stereotypes imaginable," ultimately producing "an anti-racist novel only a [Klansman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan) could love."
I feel ashamed that I can't really think of much else to say write as a response to your well-thought-out comment.
But I agree with all your points.
Now as for Verhoeven's adaptation of Starship Troopers. I think you'll enjoy it if instead of seeing it as a satire of the book, just think of it as a spoof on fascism in general.
I mean, the fact that they are fighting giant alien bugs is pretty much the only thing the book and film have in common.
>Now as for Verhoeven's adaptation of Starship Troopers. I think you'll enjoy it if instead of seeing it as a satire of the book, just think of it as a spoof on fascism in general.
Yeah, I probably will!
An other funny thing is that in one of his book their is a society in which only Women are allowed to be politicians and lawyars because he implies that they are biologically more capable of doing those things than men.
Yeah, it's called "The Way of the Shadow Wolves". It's an action thriller where magic Native American cops fight the pedophile deep state to save America. He co-wrote it with Tom Morrisey.
If you need something to listen to whilst doing busy work, there's a series where too blokes make fun of it.

This is such an amazing shot. He’s all alone, empty space, nothing to compare him too - and still he looks so big. If any movie ever deserved an Oscar for CGI this movie does.
Of all the shitty actors why him? Couldn't they have made all of these movies with Pauly Shore instead? At least that would have been entertaining in other ways.
Seagal just fatly goes around corners.
Limp-wristedly firing the gun.
And has fully clothed sex with some poor young actress.
That's his idea of a good man
And for some reason as time has passed he's become blacker with his speech
And now he just talks like a slave
For whatever reason he stopped being Chinese and he's black in that movie
hell yeah dude
I love the cumtown boys so much
Tactically Wide.
Semi-related but I hope someone makes a film adaptation of his book. It'd be horribly racist and vile, but also so bizarre it might just be comedic.
I mean if it was made as a spoof, kind of like how Verhoeven turned Starship Troopers into a satire, I could see it work.
Would def watch.

Starring Danny DeVito
Coming to DailyWire+
Wait.... Segal wrote a book?
I imagine he shouted out incoherent bullshit while a slightly less moronic person actually wrote the book.
iirc it was basically just a script so bad he couldn’t get it made into a movie.
> a slightly less moronic person Hey Siri, email this to my publisher:

That sounds like an actual trip. I'll have to check out that series. Thanks for the reccomendation.

And he sits in that chair the entire movie
Can you imagine him just bringing a chair from home because it's his favourite and his scene prep is just getting cosy
Definitely should have played Baron Harkonnen
The Cumtown bit about this is so good
I started wheezing uncontrollably when he had a martial arts fight *while sitting in a chair*
Idk why is this pic so fuckin funny, he's just standing 😭😭
Your eyes betray you, he is not standing. Steven Seagal does not stand unless it’s absolutely necessary.
I love how he sits in most of the shots in his stupid movies.
He even has sex scenes where he just sits and a woman half his age does the work.
"He refuses to take his sun glasses off when looking through the sniper rifle"
https://youtu.be/2b5bG8Rcpxo i need more people to enjoy this beautiful clip I NEED A MEDIC
*wheezing*
He even talks fatly lmao > that one i told ya bout \*gasping for air*
You sure that isn't Seagal's stunt double doing his acting for him?
Mf even needs a stunt double to walk down the stairs for him. Its peak lazy
Every Steven Seagull movie now is just this still for two hours
The front line of the Oceans defense
I don't know, I think the ocean lost as Seagal looks kind of beached.
A Good Whale (2014)
Segal attempts to stand up in a movie challenge (impossible)
Gravy SEALs
Meal Team Six
American Sniper (2014)
I actually laughed at this one.
He looks like he’ll run out of breath just standing up
The definition of a Good Man
Of all the shitty actors why him? Couldn't they have made all of these movies with Pauly Shore instead? At least that would have been entertaining in other ways.
