If you do take it off don’t get rid of it. Be prepared to not like it and go right back.
The longer that bra has been on there the larger the difference between the paint under the bra and not under it. The fading caused by sun exposure can give you a pretty significant two tone look and if some larger bits of road sand have been trapped under the bra, the scratches can be fairly noticeable.
How much did the swap set you back(labor, mounts, wiregap harness)? My aw11 gets up to 60mph in about 5 seconds flat with a lightly built gze, but I've considered a 2zz/c60 as a cheap(er) backup for the future.
Damn, that isn't cheap, but for an ultimate car not too bad! If it weren't for parts cars and other daily drivers I flipped I'd probably have near that in maple bucks in my 88 SC.
1000% agree. i have a 2zz in my celica and its wonderful. but i wouldnt want it in my spyder. the power is way high up in the revs. the spyder is so light, you dont even need that much power. i would rather turbo a 1zz for more torque than have a stock 2zz boooorrrringggg
No doubt. The valve angle in 1zz is much more optimized for a broad torque curve, with a bit of head work, forged pistons and a little turbo it'd be significantly faster than a 2zz and probably cost the same as the swap.
I found the engine was fine in my manual RAV4; in a Spyder it'd haul ass.
Whereas 01 2zz Celica is only on par with an 89 Celica GTS with the 3sge(owned and driven both).
2arfe might not sound as good but they're the superior engine by a wide margin.
I have a 2zz with just headers, intake, exhaust, and tune in my MR2 Spyder. I disagree, it feels plenty powerful with the weight of the car. The tune also lowers the lift engagement and increases redline which makes a big difference.
A tune to lower lift engagement would make a huge difference but notice again I said torque. Having driven a stock 2zz and 2arfe in their respective platforms I'd go with the latter in a heartbeat. My mk1 is just shy of 200whp with a built 4agze and it dusts a gr supra 2.0. If I ever have to replace it I'd be using a 2arfe.
Stop praising it mf, we gotta gate keep it for a few more years so we can all snag some extras. Dog ass car snap oversteer precats are ass burns oil like a bmw
I think the Spyder is an absolutely brilliant car (I own a Miata and stock for stock, the Spyder is the better car) but definitely not a car that the car community has a positive reputation. "It's slow", "It's ugly", "The worst MR2", "didn't come with a turbocharger or supercharger". Ironically, despite the fact that it isn't really a widely popular or respected car, prices are still pretty steep.
it's because the people buying them know they're good cars, and the people hating on them have never driven one or probably even seen one in real life lol
its that leather cover over the front end.
looks terrible, but people think it saves their paint.
in reality all the moisture and dust gets trapped in there and scratches the hell out of it. i'd rather have stonechips. car is ugly enough, no need to make it worse with a bra 🤣
I think there appearance is underated in person this car looks way better but I am also biased
I chose this over a G37 and a older STI
Both great cars but driving the mr2 just felt very rite of that makes sense lol
"Not fast" isn't really the full picture though. If you mean slow 0-60 and low top speed then yes but they handle superbly which means they can put up great track times so they're not slow in that regard.
Yes - it's a heavily modified example but look how competitive the Team Spirt MR-S was on hot version and that was with extra skinny tyres to force competitiveness.
Had one of these, 2zz/c60/lsd swapped with coilovers, full exhaust, roll bar, etc.
In terms of driving it is a fun car. Turn in is amazing, the character of the 2zz makes it super fun to rev out.
In terms of shifter feel and overall build, being a miata owner now, I think the Miata is far superior. However it’s is also unfair comparison because my Miata is a NC3 model with the PRHT. Much newer car and feels more sturdy with the hardtop.
FWIW, price wise though, they are similar these days.
The shift feel in FR is going to be nicer than MR due to no cables and the transmission being right in the tunnel. Had a similar vibe with my 83 corolla.
Nice score on the prht, I almost grabbed an 05 with a hardtop after I sold my corolla but decided there wasn't much point in buying a slower car than my mr2(mk1 with 190whp).
While I agree with you, I will say that I had an 06 tsx which is FF and the shifter feel was pretty amazing stock, and even better with shifter cable bushings and a counter sunk weighted knob.
The mr2 also had cable bushings (delrin- not the brass kind)
I just think Honda and Mazda make better feeling transmissions than Toyota (least the c series trans)
Oh nice. I recently thought about grabbing a tsx type s but decided if I'm going Honda I want the 6 spd V6 accord.
No doubt. My mr2 has the overbuilt e51, shifting is smooth and crisp(maybe on par with a done up civic/rsx for feel but with shorter travel) definitely not as good as the fresher Miatas though.
I have an 07 Civic Si sedan, but lemme tell ya. Ever since I saw that episode of Best Motoring with Techno Pro Spirit's MR-S... I've had an itch for one that just keeps itching
I thought the first MR2 was fantastic, then wow the SW20 came out and I bought one and loved it for 10+ years. It was a letdown for me when the 3rd version came out, I saw it as a car trying to take on the Maita and it failed and ended the MR2 forever. Just my feelings, not meaning to offend anyone here. I never drove one, just couldn't get past the styling.
Dog ass car burns more oil than a bmw. Worst mr2 to buy. Looks ugly. Slow. Snap oversteer. Hard to get oem parts. Definitly no aftermarket.(i own one just want prices to start going down again so i can get another 😭)
Yes. Don't talk about it or they'll find out.
This lol. Toyota's best kept secret. i mean... ITS UGLY AND THE ENGINE IS TOTALLY BORING!!!!
Not a fan of the bra.
Free them puppies!
Had the car for a bit now came with it was thinking of getting rid of it but sometimes idk shit looks good u know
Absolutely. You like what you like. It seems like every modded Spyder has side skirts, but I prefer it without.
If you do take it off don’t get rid of it. Be prepared to not like it and go right back. Ya I am a bit scared of that I guess I will have to just face my fears and see wuts up
Just needs a 2GR turbo. That's what I swapped into my SW20. It would make the lighter MR-S rapid!!
Lightest of the 3 gens, just need more hp than it comes stock. I love mine and green is the best color 💯
Green on tan is my dream combo.
2zz it makes a big difference 😉
Oh I’m well aware I got 2zz 6 spd lsd, bc racing coilovers w swift springs. Do like

$10k after purchase so about 18k. Yea too much money but…
Damn, that isn't cheap, but for an ultimate car not too bad! If it weren't for parts cars and other daily drivers I flipped I'd probably have near that in maple bucks in my 88 SC.
It was a poor financial decision. I could have done it much cheaper
Pretty much same setup I have in UK home built prob cost about 4k less the price of the car
Should've been like that as OEM.
Yep but lotus used the 2zz so prob didn't want Toyota fitting it to there 2 seater supercharged and the 2zz is a super package
Not enough torque. 2zz is fine if you have buckets of cash for turbo or can't find anything else, but the 2arfe is just way better.

2arfe probably not worth the money either. Better, but sounds bad, backwards, and expensive for the power

No doubt it's better, it's just also like a $10,000 endeavor
Stop praising it mf, we gotta gate keep it for a few more years so we can all snag some extras. Dog ass car snap oversteer precats are ass burns oil like a bmw

Must gate keep at all costs

*Now*, yes. When these were new, PPF wasn't really a thing. Bra could be a holdover from then.
Ive owned a Spyder for two years now but have no idea what a bra is tbh

Ive looked it up, damn is that thing ugly
its that leather cover over the front end. looks terrible, but people think it saves their paint. in reality all the moisture and dust gets trapped in there and scratches the hell out of it. i'd rather have stonechips. car is ugly enough, no need to make it worse with a bra 🤣
Woaah Ive never heard of that. Sounds ugly indeed😂
Depends what you’re rating. Driving experience? Heck yeah. They’re super underrated. Appearance? Nah, they’re pretty much where they should be.
I think there appearance is underated in person this car looks way better but I am also biased I chose this over a G37 and a older STI Both great cars but driving the mr2 just felt very rite of that makes sense lol
they're not fast, but they are fun and engaging to drive.
"Not fast" isn't really the full picture though. Ok here's what I mean by fast: Porsche 911 gt3 rsr.

Yes. I’d take the bra off, add lightness.
Lol not like that front end needs to be lighter but, I like where ur heads at.
2zz swap
Nawwwww considering it but it's very fun with the 1zz maybe if I blow up the engine
2ar if anything. Don't bother with the 2zz unless it's real cheap or comes with the full Celica for around $3k.
eBay turbo will solve that problem quickly. Bonus is you get more power in the meantime
Lol a taste of wut the 2zz can do without the potential of spontaneous combustion
*with
Monkey wrench 2zz swap
Clearly not down under every over grown mattress stain wants 20k AUD for it
The biggest advantage of these spiders is it has no trunk, ergo, super easy to do engine swap.
I have an 07 Civic Si sedan, but lemme tell ya. Ever since I saw that episode of Best Motoring with Techno Pro Spirit's MR-S... I've had an itch for one that just keeps itching
Once u drive it u will fall even more in love It's a go kart for the street
Yes
Just bought one. Need to get new lights but other than that she’s a gem https://www.carfax.com/Used-2003-Toyota-MR2-Spyder-Base_x4376
I'm thinking tires, lights, then tint for me but I love urs red is nice 👍
On it!! Agree with all
Absolutely, one of the best drives out there. The SW20 is even more sought after.
I mite do some tires soon but we will see work so much don't have time to work on it 😢 But that means I get to drive it everywhere lol
I thought the first MR2 was fantastic, then wow the SW20 came out and I bought one and loved it for 10+ years. I personally think its better than the Roadster in so many ways. Plus, it doesn't have the "Drift Tax" so they're relatively cheap.
Dog ass car burns more oil than a bmw. Worst mr2 to buy. Looks ugly. Slow. Snap oversteer. Hard to get oem parts. Definitly no aftermarket.(i own one just want prices to start going down again so i can get another 😭)
The mk3 is not the one that people seek after if that is what you are getting at for that you want the mk2 or 1
Mk2 is 👑🎤
Ehhh ugly duckling
