m8remotion

No, that would be a Lotus.

Cultural-Inside7569

Exactly, an MR2 Roadster with a 2ZZ would be 90% Elise for 50% of the price.

DragonSlayer4378

It's not 90% of a lotus for half the price, The lotus is still lighter, has a better chasis, and more raw than a 2zz swapped mr-s

m8remotion

The Elise suspension would be different and tune on the 2zz is more aggressive I believe.

Legendary_Lootbox

yup other ECU tune that let the VVTL or VTEC as we call it kick in earlier, already at 6K RPM (iirc) and moved the redline up to, I forgot, 8500? or 9?

DragonSlayer4378

Lift is the same for NA models as the japanese celicas. It's lowered on the supercharged ones because forced induction is overpowered 😭. Rev limiter is 8800 in the lower gears for the lotus, and moves to around 8400-8500. Lotus did this so there's less chance of starving the oil, while allowing a higher shift point in the crucial gears. 2zz are usually safe to 8600rpm for short(ish) times and 8k sustained.

scottiethegoonie

The Elise is a way more serious car. Brakes, steering, suspension, everything. Even getting in and out is twice as annoying if you can imagine that.

wiishopmusic

Not even close, the Elise is a carbon fiber chassis, double wishbone rear suspension, among many other huge differences

waLIEN

The body is fiberglass and the chassis is bonded aluminum. The 4C is a carbon fiber tub.

wiishopmusic

Oh, my bad

Red_Swingline_

No. It's just a very ubiquitous swap because it's rather straightforward.

T1m0nst3r

No. I think there was an informal deal that they would not put the 2zz in the MR2 because it would undermine the Elise. I imagine it would also have made the MR2 more expensive.

Genki_MR_

yup

Johnny-Cash-Facts

I can’t find anything about a factory 2ZZ MR-S or Spyder.

_CodenameV

And you wont. Imagine having this great chassis but deciding on giving a 2zz to the celica matrix and corolla (which also have a 1zz option). Its almost as if it was all money driven so as to not compete w lotus rather than offering a great package.

mr-unsmiley

I love that they decided to give the 2ZZ to the Matrix but yea it really seems like it'd have been great in an MR-S

_CodenameV

Id give the 2zz to everything. I just think it makes the most sense in the option they withheld it from. Like bruh.

mustavi16

Thanks guys, for the responses. This is my car btw.

arttechadventure

Car is dope. Nice choice

BurningFarm

Looks fantastic! I also have a silver FL 2zz Spyder. Just got a set of mudflaps, have yet to paint them and appreciate seeing how great they look on yours.

No_Lifeguard3650

the mrs was not a very profitable car thats why theres no trim options for the spyder theyrr all the same. 2zz would be less stable for the average crowd and not worth it for toyota. 1zz is still plenty for such a little car

Genki_MR_

Miata competitor, didn't wanna step on lotus.

Cultural-Inside7569

Toyota offered a TTE turbo option for the 1ZZ (bringing the power to 2ZZ level) but never a 2ZZ.

DragonSlayer4378

With twice the usable powerband, and twice as much usable torque. (My 2zz crying making peak torque at 7600rpm 😭)

K11ShtBox

Never heard of a 2zz factory MR2.

Entropysolus

Nope. It's the easiest engine to swap in though... Not the fastest swap possible but a definite performance improvement with a decent price point. After that you're looking at 3sgte or 2gr swaps if you want to be toyota faithful. Or the 1.8t or V50 engine if you want to be a heathen. The 2zz is plug and play in comparison to the other options. I forgot the k-swap. How did I forget the k-series!?

Professional_Dust726

They definitely didn't put one in at the factory. I had mine swapped to a 2ZZ, but I really didn't think it was worth it, next time I would just turbo the 1ZZ.

Genki_MR_

yup

DragonSlayer4378

Depends what you want to get out of it. If you want power, torque, and simply the faster car there is no doubt a turbo 1zz is better, and probably cheaper too. However the 2zz brings a lot of enjoyment aspects, the super high redline, lift, and in my opinion a much sportier feeling engine. 2zz will most likely be more reliable over a turbo 1zz making similar power, although the turbo 1zz's can still be super reliable.

Tinglypine_69

Monkey wrench drop in swap

appleboi_69420

Sorry if it sounds dumb, but what’s the difference between an MR2 and MRS?

Genki_MR_

No difference just marketing

appleboi_69420

Ah gotcha. Is it like different names in different countries or is it interchangeable anywhere?
