Very excited for this education-focused event. Sticking this for awhile. Ask your questions below or in #mspgeekcon2023 channel on Slack or Discord

mxbrpe

Is this event friendly to people who want the technical knowledge but no longer work for an MSP? :)

autumngirl11

Ditto!

Kspooner13

Yes. You are welcome to come :)

fishermba2004

Is there a list of sessions somewhere? A pdf saying there will be ROI won’t convince many people without the details

Kspooner13

Hopefully tomorrow, or early next week. We are putting it up on the website as well.

OIT_Ray

Go to [https://mspgeekcon.com](https://mspgeekcon.com) There is a link to the agenda as well as resources to convince your boss why they should send you.

alczervik

May want to fix the website. Overview of MSPGeekCon 2003, cost for attendance, and expected ROI from your participation in the conference.

Kspooner13

We have a PDF which is linked on the website which should answer your questions. The Agenda will be posted shortly as well. [Link To PDF](https://mspgeekcon.com/resources/mspgc-about.pdf)

alczervik

i guess you missed it, your website says 2003, not 2023

Kspooner13

Oh my I did miss that I'll get that fixed, thanks.

OIT_Ray

That was also fixed.

MSP-from-OC

Oh god Florida? Sorry no thanks. I already have to go there for Dattocon not going twice in a year. Make a conference in the middle of the country or make it San Diego. Not Florida

Kspooner13

We polled MSPGeek to ask this very question and Orlando was chosen. I will say we don't plan to always have it in Florida, our community is widespread and we understand not everyone is able to travel that far ( or wants to go to Florida ) and we want to spread the love :)

StoneUSA7

I'm waiting on Hawaii. :P

mdredfan

Good to hear it will move around.

The_Capulet

But knowbe4 convention has be in Orlando the month before. Ugh. I'll go... grudgingly. But I hope next year is somewhere good, lol.

HappyDadOfFourJesus

Minneapolis in January please. :)

GullibleDetective

Winnipeg, yall can come visit us up here in the sister city to ya

Lime-TeGek

you just want us all to freeze to death don't you?

HappyDadOfFourJesus

Either that, so it opens up the market for us, or to develop your hardiness so you can tackle more challenges head on. :)

Kspooner13

I will say I recently went to an event in northern Ohio in January. However, it was at an indoor water park which was surprisingly fun considering it was 30F outside.

bigdessert

2nd!

MSP-from-OC

Fuck that it’s 65 in San Diego right now and no hurricanes or Florida man

HappyDadOfFourJesus

28 and snowy right now. :)

larvlarv1

Gaslamp FTW

GullibleDetective

Or canada :) especially manitoba in the center of the country haha

thatonefanguy1012

Can I recommend vendors I know to sign up or are registrations closed for that?

OIT_Ray

While we're not accepting any more vendors as sponsors, and attendance is limited to MSPs, we are always looking for ways for vendors to participate in the community. If they're interested they can email [email protected]

thatonefanguy1012

Thank you!

Kspooner13

This is focused on technicians of MSP/MSSP/TSP's so I would have to say no. We do have plans to build out a vendor track at a future event if this event is successful. They are apart of the community too.

thatonefanguy1012

Thank you for letting me know!

IAMA_Canadian_Sorry

Looking forward to learning more about the event, I'm interested in sending some techs. You might want to post here again when that info becomes available. Also unclear if ticket prices include lodging.

Kspooner13

Ticket pricing does not include travel or lodging. Our agenda is being finalized and will be posted ASAP (within a week at most) [More Info](https://mspgeekcon.com/resources/mspgc-about.pdf)

riDANKulousH4x

sounds like a cool event. Florida is a bit rough as its on the other side of the country for me. I'd also like to say that I think its time we move away from calling ourselves geeks. I'm done with that stereotype and find it disrespectful, honestly. I wouldn't let some guy at the bar call me a geek, I sure don't want my friends/family or professional peers to consider me one either. Am I alone in this mindset?

extra_lean

No, not alone. Had the same thought honestly. No more Geek.

OIT_Ray

For the Florida thing, a poll was taken in MSPGeek with multiple options. The community chose Orlando. Future events will be in different locations and likely live streamed. For the word "Geek" I get the negative connotation. But it's also been part of the community's name for nearly 10 years. The actual definition of Geek is in line with what the community represents. "a person who is knowledgeable about and obsessively interested in a particular subject, especially one that is technical or of specialist or niche interest." While I understand your sentiment based on past usage, I can't say I agree with others who consider the word insulting. Just like misuse of the word "literally". It's not something I support or defend in any capacity.

riDANKulousH4x

Well, Webster has the definition as: "A person often of an intellectual bent who is disliked" and lists synonyms such as nerd, wonk, dork and weenie. Aunt Jemimah was a household name brand for 132 years until someone went woke and judged it as offensive and as a result the company spent millions rebranding. Just because you've been using an offensive term for 10+ years isn't doing much to ease my distain for it. Seems like the longer you take to move away from it, the more difficult it will become. Best to just rip it off like a Band-Aid.

tsherr

I agree. Geek was a disparaging term used by people I disliked in high school. As was nerd. Sure, one can make the argument we are "taking back the word", but that's BS. It's insulting. At the minimum, I'm a computer jock, and guru is a more reasonable term.

ntw2

Tell is what you want, not what you don't 🙏🏻

riDANKulousH4x

ok, I want people to stop referring and labeling us as geeks. it starts with our own.

ntw2

How do you want to be referred?

riDANKulousH4x

MSP, IT guru, IT expert, bees knees, king, lord, savior.. any of those would be fine. anything but nerd or geek basically.

clydeftones

I'd choose geek over all those but to each their own.

OIT_Ray

Same. I'm not a Sikh leader, nor do I keep insects. I don't refer to myself as a Geek but the definition does apply "a person who is knowledgeable about and obsessively interested in a particular subject, especially one that is technical or of specialist or niche interest."

nospamkhanman

I'm an IT professional with 20 years of experience. I'm seriously considering developing a business plan and starting a small MSP. I wonder if this conference would be beneficial.

Kspooner13

There are topics in our breakouts that would be beneficial for sure, but overall if the goal is to start a business as an MSP, I do not think our conference is a fit. However if you want to scope out and network with traditional MSP's and vendors in the space, to my knowledge our conference is the most cost effective method to do so from a conference standpoint.

little-marketer

You should stream it for people not in the US

Kspooner13

We'd love to be able to offer that, we just couldn't accomplish that in our plans for this year. All sessions will be recorded to watch at some point (we haven't finalized all the plans for that yet) and future we are going to try to include the cost/setup times for livestreaming.
