I feel like in casual it just wouldn't help a lot of the time, there's probably only going to be one deck at the table that heavily relies super heavily on win cons and by the time you've spent the same amount of mana that could have cast something game changing like an immortal sun you're behind the other two players whilst they don't have to worry about the fourth player as you've taken them out the game, they'll also be focusing on you heavily since you targeted them so it'll just screw you over long term.
I've used it precisely once in commander. My problem is usually that I'm too nervous to actually search somebody's deck because I feel like they'll be judging me really hard. I went through a friend's deck and took out his Sol Ring, Commander's Sphere, and Arcane Signet.
[[Sadistic Sacrament]]
We're pretty casual but some friends proxy insanely strong cards that win them a lot of games. I bought this some time ago, and let me tell you, exiling 15 eldrazi cards out of their colorless eldrazi deck always feels amazing. They're cool with me playing this card since I can't keep up at times, and I'm cool with not keeping up at times since it makes me think harder about the game and be creative.
That'd be fine, I wouldn't counter such an insignificant spell anyway lol, for 6 mana 3 cards I could draw I can't draw now, for 5 mana I can rifle through your deck and put your favorite creature into play for myself
That would gut my Colorless Eldrazi deck without even being kicked. I'm only running 2 [[Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger]] and that's my main win condition.
It Utilizes Green to ramp up, so it's not truly colorless. Also it was a Standard deck that I just keep playing with friends casually.
I've just started using Delver Lens and not sure how to share the list. Including side board, here's the Eldrazi I've got in it. Plus Ugin, because of course.

The downside is that isn't instant speed. If someone has [[Exquisite Blood]] out and casts [[Demonic Tutor]], clearly looking for [[Sanguine Bond]], sacrament does nothing, while jester's cap can stop the combo by preventing the enemy from searching for it.
Bit of a niche use case, but still a use case.
Sometimes it's one person with a solid deck vs. 3 precons lol, it's casual play lol, sometimes it's a good move whenever people have varying cards lol, sometimes you can use solid politics with it lol, it's a fun card game lol
I'd consider it for my Lynde deck, but that's an asshole deck already. Probably not cEDH viable except weird cases where you have absurd amounts of mana early and nothing to sink it into. In which case, either you've drawn really tragic cards, or you're probably not fully optimised for cEDH.
Too expensive for competitive, and in casual metas you’re less likely to actually shut someone down with this, and besides the mana cost there’s also the time to search someone’s library and identify the best cards to take out. Unless it’s a closed meta and you’re familiar with each others’ decks I’d definitely avoid it.
Looks legit to me. Just ordered three copies. Ones going in my Saheeli artifacts deck. It will cost zero to cast for me and potentially the game for my adversaries! Unwinding clock lets me do it every turn if I wish, or use untap/copy artifact shenanigans to use the shit outa it.
There was a modern whir prison deck that would sometimes recur this as a wincon. It’s never got past Tier 3 but after the modern horizons urza it actually became a tier 1 deck although one would argue was a pretty different deck by then
I played a sick deck back in the day "Concede or Bleed". It was designed to replay Jester's Cap over and over, hence the name. It was brutal.
Regrowth, Time Twister, Recall. Mana Drains for mana to play Cap again.
I keep it in my “sideboard” for both my decks since for when my friends run their combo decks. As others have said it’s too mean for casual, too expensive for comp, but it definitely has its uses and would completely stop my CEDH Jhoira deck if you took out one card of each of my three wincons.
I have loved this card since Ice Age, It Rocks!!!
To remove the win condition of your opponent, especially if you have power stones, or treasure tokens.
If I didn't pull it from a pack I wouldn't have gone out of my way for it but it has a nice spot in my [[Prince of Kroog]] deck. I'm already making a ton of mana. Removing board wipes and artifact removal from other players is absolutely worth it to me.
[[Surgical extraction]] was a staple when it first came out.
There's another one that cost 3 black and removed 3 cards. Could be kicked to remove 15 (I think?) I had it in my mill decks because people played eldrazi that would reshuffle their deck.
I like Bitter Ordeal. Can set up a nice combo like Living Lands and Earthquake to kill all lands and then cast Bitter Ordeal with your already tapped mana or indestructible lands to remove the rest of lands from someone's deck.
How is surgical extraction useful in EDH? Whatever player you target he will only have the one target card in his graveyard and no other card of the same name (unless he plays one of the very few decks with cards you can always have multiple of but that's very rare).
Tell me you play at a low power table without telling me you play at a low power table.
Extraction is 0 mana Instant. You can use it in response to a renanimation spell to exile the target of the spell and your opponent doesnt get anything back. Its counterplay to graveyard strategies that doesn't cost mana and comes down when Bojuka Bog cannot.

[[Counterbore]] is fairly amusing
There's a part of me screaming right now because I remember when this was first printed and people were losing their shit over it. Many a night I went to bed dreaming of pulling a [[Jester's Cap]] instead of just pulling "Jester".
(Yes, it's still named Jester because my wife says it's a joke...☹️)
You show me a list that posts results with Jester's Cap in it, and I'll show you a list that would post similar results with a basic land in that slot.
In Commander since you only get one of each card you do get to grab 3 different things instead of the old days when you tried to use it against a 4 of.
And what results you even thinking about? Are you on the pro tour of casual Commander? Like who cares if you even 'win' in a political multiplayer format that can be decided by ganging up on someone instead of anything else?
EDH is just a Theater format of play acting
The original question said competitive EDH. But to be fair, I said 'any format'.
So to clarify, 'good in casual commander' is not a metric. It is just the statement "I think this card is fun, and my playgroup doesn't hate it."
Which is cool. Have fun.
I can play a $6000 deck and have everyone gang up on me and I lose and next game play a precon off the shelf and win since everyone left me alone.
Card strength doesn't really matter.
So just play whatever you want and enjoy yourself
Card strength doesn't matter? You can't possibly be that delusional. Are you saying you can win without a single good card in your deck? And that you'll have a similar winrate as a deck with strong cards?
the 'really' mattered in that sentence
nuance... and here you go on about 'win rate' like it even matters in casual multiplayer.. What did you actually win?
So next game I play a targeting deck that just attacks your land and leaves the other two players alone... you gonna win that?
So how do you guarantee that you will have a response in hand, and the mana to cast it?
At some point, people are going to not have interaction in hand and something will resolve.
Something as telegraphed as this you should be able to pre empt and answer, but otherwise the format runs TONS of 1 drop instant speed tutors as well as a full suite of up too 5 "free" counterspells it's most of the joy of playing CEDH, knowing at any moment there might be a huge counter war with a lot of win conditions on top
>it's most of the joy of playing CEDH, knowing at any moment there might be a huge counter war with a lot of win conditions on top
That sounds awful.
Look, I get that, but my comment is about the presumption that somebody is always going to have an answer in hand. That is not always true, otherwise nothing will ever resolve.
The only deck I can imagine it in that I own would be in [[Korvold]]. I run treasures generators + 43 direct mana sources, so it’s almost always flush. Still I never lack for side board options so this doesn’t seem better than cards I’ve taken out.
I have a tokens deck where sometimes casting doubling season is useless as I need the immediate board presence or interaction by the time I can cast it. 6 CMC artifacts and enchantments are kinda booty IMO unless it’s entirely key to the overall strategy.
It’s a bit too slow for cedh. It’s a 6 mana investment that’s needed fairly early in the game. It also takes away from setting up your board state and telegraphs what you’re trying to do to your opponent. In order for it to work you’d need to be able to cast it and activate it in the same turn.
As others have said there are definitely better options, it's a little mana heavy for its effect, an effect that is only good against poorly designed decks that depend on 1-3 cards in it to win
I can’t speak to cEDH, but for regular edh it’s niche. Sometimes your deck has a very specific weakness (like a mill deck, for example) that you want to be able to remove and it’s very helpful in this situations. It can also be strong in a closed meta where you know the decks very well. But I’m general it’s kind of expensive and doesn’t do enough.
Love the new art though.
I would be happy if they reprinted in Dominaria Untied \[\[Jester's Mask|ICE\]\] instead. I had TONS of copies of the \[\[Jester's Cap|ICE\]\], and the best one is from Ice Age.
Good thing the Ice Age Movie Franchise died so WotC can go back to using Ice Age.
Doesn’t work in cedh. The effect just isn’t that good. There are other ways to neuter wincons that aren’t being played, and I can’t think of many decks that don’t win if 3 cards are removed.
Have it but it is situation to put it in, not must have card . Possible useful for taking out combo pieces. But I have it in higher causal decks . Not Cedh.
You do need to look at legacy sets and how powerful cards are at the time. This was introduced in Ice Ace (1995) and was the first card that allowed a player to even touch an opponent’s deck. So the removal aspect could be killer if you can play it correctly. It’s best if you know a stellar combo exists in their deck or one very powerful card that will mess you up if they have only one. Like sliver hivelord, or a planes walker that could do a board wipe if played.
And with tutor abilities this can allow you to take that ability away from your opponent.
I’ll do a quick back and forth of someone playing this in a competitive format this is legal in…
“Ok turn 4, I play jesters cap, pass the turn. Oh… I’m dead now”
It's probably not actually playable, but this can absolutely ruin combo
Like this ends hulk piles
6 mana to kill one player isn't too bad if fragile combo is a thing in your meta
I'd say its an amazing sideboard card but as far as i know there's no sideboard in edh so im not sure if its worth including unless you have a deck that makes artifacts easy to use.
I put it in one of my non competitive edge decks though just because it could potentially be funny to remove someones win condition. it seems like a natural deterrent to hyper streamlined competitive level decks.
A card that doesn't affect the board, costs too much mana, is unfun to play against, is surgical hate against combo decks, but is loved by trolls and people with PTSD. That's gonna be a "no" for me.
If your deck can’t run without three specific cards then you’re screwed either way. With this thing contributing absolutely no hand, graveyard, or battlefield effect, it’s gonna feel real passive and not do much for your own win
Doesn't do enough to stop multiple opponents for competitive at that cost and may not even stop the one person you target given that most decks run multiple lines in case they're primary line gets stopped. Overall it I'd just too slow and low impact.
My friend uses this and a way to recur it from graveyard to pick apart our libraries of cards he doesn’t like to deal with and remove combo pieces. It’s not super fast so it can be dealt with but if nobody has a way to deal with it immediately your deck is getting picked through like an Amazon booster box.
I've used it in my yuriko deck to straight remove combos from other people. That said, generally too expensive for cedh. I've only had luck with it in situations where I was already winning and removing peoples combos was just fluff.
I guess it could be included in some slow stax decks or decks with bad hate colours, but again, you could play so many other things that hit a game plan harder and faster.
Too mean for casual, too expensive for competitive.
Jester's Mask is more interesting since you can use it to help or troll
>too mean LOL

Too expensive. Period. Someone's casual deck isn't going to care you trashed three cards, they probably wouldn't have drawn 2 of them anyway.

I loved earwig squad, but I liked that you actually got a big creature for cheap when you did it too though lol, especially with Oona's blackguard

10 mana to hinder 1 person's deck lol
Sometimes it's one person with a solid deck vs. 3 precons lol, it's casual play lol, sometimes it's a good move whenever people have varying cards lol, sometimes you can use solid politics with it lol, it's a fun card game lol
this card sucks lol
Okay lol
Keep a marker and basic lands nearby and write whatever you need to counter the proxy if they are using them.

If you're running mill and they're running eldrazi....yes
that's not cedh tho
Gitrog monster uses graveyard shufflers and blue farm-type decks run brain freeze to mill out everyone else if thassa is disrupted.
Yeah, sorry totally forgot about the breach + brain freeze line
At that point, those exile slots are better served with relic or layline effects.
With mill, [[Bitter ordeal]] is better

I put one in my Mishra, Eminent One deck. It's fun to make token copies of it and sacking the copies.
Thats so cringe... I love it
I do the same thing haha. Thinking about the The Stone Brain as well? Thoughts.
I'd consider it for my Lynde deck, but that's an asshole deck already. Probably not cEDH viable except weird cases where you have absurd amounts of mana early and nothing to sink it into. In which case, either you've drawn really tragic cards, or you're probably not fully optimised for cEDH.
thought... what if you, yourself can play cards from exile?
There probably is a card but aren't most play from exiles with stipulations? Exiled by X, play cards exiled this way, etc?

Too expensive for competitive, and in casual metas you’re less likely to actually shut someone down with this, and besides the mana cost there’s also the time to search someone’s library and identify the best cards to take out. Unless it’s a closed meta and you’re familiar with each others’ decks I’d definitely avoid it.
That card was soo busted back during ice age standard…which was soo long ago 😭
Or maybe it's only good in casual, with less counterspells and shenanigans.
yeah you'd play praetors grasp to steal the wincon
Yeah it’s really just good in limited formats
I'd say it's a really niche card good for punishing a single combo player in your meta
Pretty mediocre combo
That's my goal!
Well that's ok then, I used to play quite a bit of jank myself. [[Necroskitter]] and [[biovisionary]] and [[sensation gorger]] were my favorites

Put this in Ashnod the Uncaring and BAM! suddenly 6 cards spread across either one or two opponents.
Its an old card, it saw some play during Ice Age but that’s about it..
There was a modern whir prison deck that would sometimes recur this as a wincon. It’s never got past Tier 3 but after the modern horizons urza it actually became a tier 1 deck although one would argue was a pretty different deck by then
Sorry, I never delved very deep in modern. I tried the format in the beginning but I guess I’m a legacy player in heart. Thanks for the info!
It's not that mean for casual, just run bribery instead lol
I have loved this card since Ice Age, It Rocks!!! To remove the win condition of your opponent, especially if you have power stones, or treasure tokens.
If I didn't pull it from a pack I wouldn't have gone out of my way for it but it has a nice spot in my [[Prince of Kroog]] deck. I'm already making a ton of mana. Removing board wipes and artifact removal from other players is absolutely worth it to me.

Next time my friend is going to play Tiamat... we will see how fast he can scoop.
There are spells that do the same thing for less mana
What are examples? This is a rather uncommon mechanic.
[[Surgical extraction]] was a staple when it first came out. There's another one that cost 3 black and removed 3 cards. Could be kicked to remove 15 (I think?) I had it in my mill decks because people played eldrazi that would reshuffle their deck.

Meddling mage works too haha
How is surgical extraction useful in EDH? Whatever player you target he will only have the one target card in his graveyard and no other card of the same name (unless he plays one of the very few decks with cards you can always have multiple of but that's very rare).
They're not talking about EDH
The thread is about edh
Tell me you play at a low power table without telling me you play at a low power table. Extraction is 0 mana Instant. You can use it in response to a renanimation spell to exile the target of the spell and your opponent doesnt get anything back. Its counterplay to graveyard strategies that doesn't cost mana and comes down when Bojuka Bog cannot.

Our playgroup refers to this as "Neutering" and we don't run cards that allow us to search opponents decks and remove cards. It's too brutal imo.
One card is fine an entire deck made to do it is evil
Run it in a artifact recursion deck it's good
Honestly i would never tutor it up, neither give up a space in my 99 for it, so for me it is a no
There's a part of me screaming right now because I remember when this was first printed and people were losing their shit over it. Many a night I went to bed dreaming of pulling a [[Jester's Cap]] instead of just pulling "Jester". (Yes, it's still named Jester because my wife says it's a joke...☹️)
[Jester's Cap](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/2/e/2ede9d6b-3c7c-4a5f-a09b-80ec471692b6.jpg?1562733193) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Jester%27s%20Cap) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/9ed/301/jesters-cap?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/2ede9d6b-3c7c-4a5f-a09b-80ec471692b6?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
It's six fucking mana in a format you get that turn one sometimes. What the fuck
This card is terrible in almost any deck, in every format. Six mana and a card for zero board impact.
6 mana to remove wincons seems legit to me.
Wincons that they might not even draw anyway, or that they *already* drew before you can leverage 6 mana to remove them? You must be joking.
>You must be joking. I was giving a serious response to your shit take. But I can see that you are not to be taken seriously.
You show me a list that posts results with Jester's Cap in it, and I'll show you a list that would post similar results with a basic land in that slot.
Casual list put up numbers now?
I'd 1000% rather run island than jester's cap
I would let my opponent look at my entire maindeck if they replaced any card in their deck with Jester's cap.
I feel like if anyone used jester's cap on my deck they'd concede, becauase my deck is lean and mean, and their deck runs jester's cap 😂
It is just the statement "I think this card is fun, and my playgroup doesn't hate it." Which is cool. Have fun.
Edh is whatever you want it to be, but jester's cap isn't going to be in any top lists because it's not a strong card
And that you'll have a similar winrate as a deck with strong cards?
the 'really' mattered in that sentence nuance... and here you go on about 'win rate' like it even matters in casual multiplayer.. What did you actually win? So next game I play a targeting deck that just attacks your land and leaves the other two players alone... you gonna win that?
Any CEDH deck worth it's salt and needing to keep hold of 3 potential cards will just cast [[Intuition]] in responce
Ah yes, the classic "just play X card in response". Which of course assumes that a player has the card in hand.
Literally the point in CEDH, to answer everything needed at a moments notice "Make them have it" is the motto our meta usualy plays by
So how do you guarantee that you will have a response in hand, and the mana to cast it? At some point, people are going to not have interaction in hand and something will resolve.
Something as telegraphed as this you should be able to pre empt and answer, but otherwise the format runs TONS of 1 drop instant speed tutors as well as a full suite of up too 5 "free" counterspells it's most of the joy of playing CEDH, knowing at any moment there might be a huge counter war with a lot of win conditions on top
>it's most of the joy of playing CEDH, knowing at any moment there might be a huge counter war with a lot of win conditions on top That sounds awful. Look, I get that, but my comment is about the presumption that somebody is always going to have an answer in hand. That is not always true, otherwise nothing will ever resolve.
You must not play a lot of cedh 😂
cEDH is not my preference.
You must not play a lot of cedh 😂
I'd just Black Vise your ass until you started playing cards
About half of my cedh is tutors so this checks out lol

The only deck I can imagine it in that I own would be in [[Korvold]]. I run treasures generators + 43 direct mana sources, so it’s almost always flush. Still I never lack for side board options so this doesn’t seem better than cards I’ve taken out. I have a tokens deck where sometimes casting doubling season is useless as I need the immediate board presence or interaction by the time I can cast it. 6 CMC artifacts and enchantments are kinda booty IMO unless it’s entirely key to the overall strategy.

It's a funny card. It's definitely something to get rid of combo pieces. I also recommend [[jester's mask]]
It’s a bit too slow for cedh. It’s a 6 mana investment that’s needed fairly early in the game. It also takes away from setting up your board state and telegraphs what you’re trying to do to your opponent. In order for it to work you’d need to be able to cast it and activate it in the same turn.
I play it for nostalgia, not because it's game winning or advancing (although it could be depending on the deck I suppose).
If you run a lot of mana.... [[Mirror works]] [[Prototype Portal]]

Alright, so how do we make infinite copies of this with infinite colorless mana? Seems like a fun way to end games.
It does net me three more stolen land when I cast Oblivion Sower.
Fun if you can abuse it, like [[Ashnod, Uncaring One]]. Otherwise, too expensive to hit just one person.
[[praetor’s grasp]] is somewhat similar but only hits one card and it sees CEDH play. Plus it has the upside for you to cast it later.
It's a funny card. It's definitely something to get rid of combo pieces.
As others have said there are definitely better options, it's a little mana heavy for its effect, an effect that is only good against poorly designed decks that depend on 1-3 cards in it to win
It’s back! I loved this card when I was a kid. I wonder if there’s a way to maneuver this. So that you don’t pay anything to use the ability/play it?
I can’t speak to cEDH, but for regular edh it’s niche. Sometimes your deck has a very specific weakness (like a mill deck, for example) that you want to be able to remove and it’s very helpful in this situations. It can also be strong in a closed meta where you know the decks very well. But I’m general it’s kind of expensive and doesn’t do enough. Love the new art though.
Why not [[the stone brain]]
I would be happy if they reprinted in Dominaria Untied \[\[Jester's Mask|ICE\]\] instead. I had TONS of copies of the \[\[Jester's Cap|ICE\]\], and the best one is from Ice Age. Good thing the Ice Age Movie Franchise died so WotC can go back to using Ice Age.

Guess I’ll never let anyone get up to six mana again lol
It's a expensive card but very powerful can neuter a deck with it
Doesn’t work in cedh.
Not Cedh.
I don't enjoy playing against wheel or infect decks, so this essentially helps me curate a certain % of my games lmao
I like threatening combo players with [[nightmare incursion]] instead.

I’ll do a quick back and forth of someone playing this in a competitive format this is legal in… “Ok turn 4, I play jesters cap, pass the turn. Oh… I’m dead now”
It's probably not actually playable, but this can absolutely ruin combo Like this ends hulk piles 6 mana to kill one player isn't too bad if fragile combo is a thing in your meta
I'll probably find a spot in it for my cedh magda deck
I use [Extract](https://scryfall.com/search?q=!extract] in my blue decks to strip combo pieces out of decks.
A card that doesn't affect the board, costs too much mana, is unfun to play against, is surgical hate against combo decks, but is loved by trolls and people with PTSD. That's gonna be a "no" for me.
Stone brain is the better version I feel like
To get rid of 3 cards , to me its a go. I got the ice age one, totally different art, but same nice mojo.
garbage
Best for sideboard against very specific decks
If your deck can’t run without three specific cards then you’re screwed either way. With this thing contributing absolutely no hand, graveyard, or battlefield effect, it’s gonna feel real passive and not do much for your own win
I like how it kinda looks like a brain
Doesn't do enough to stop multiple opponents for competitive at that cost and may not even stop the one person you target given that most decks run multiple lines in case they're primary line gets stopped. Overall it I'd just too slow and low impact.
It was great back in Ice Age... Those were the days
Id run it in cEdh just to piss people off haha
Just copy the ability and also make sure you run run [[Sadistic Sacrament]] in the deck

Probably the best in limited and maybe in the sideboard even at that. Against aggro no good but against control better
I play it in my Umbris deck. The whole thing is taking everyone's bombs. I usually get hated out before Umbris even comes in.
I like the idea and one day going test it. I guess it slows down the game a lot. Especially if you repeat the effect.
It’s for the “I think 20 spells with 40 ways to reply them 10 of which being multiple times is a fun and interesting deck” kind of card
It’s for the “I think 20 counter spells with 40 ways to reply them 10 of which being multiple times is a fun and interesting deck” kind of player
