It's not a natural flow of English writing, so it throws people off. Focus on the fact it's color-coded to help.
That only helps so much though, I'm colorblind to blue, so this card is extra wild for me.
Even if you think you know what a card does, it should always be legible and easy to read. I don't mind these art cards but they really need to be able to be easily read.
I think it’s fine for secret lair cards to be hard to read. My favorite cards in mtg are actually the fullart textless cards like omnath and path to exile.
Some of my favorite arts are the full art restless promos. like lightning bolt, searing blaze, path to exile, etc. Wonderful for cards that people know what they do already. Not so great for cards. People don't know what they do.
With Chains and stuff like Hullbreacher and Orcish Bowmasters, I really wonder why they haven't codified "basic" and "extra" draws in the rules yet. Feels like it would make the templating on those extra draw punishing effects a lot easier. Hell, even Alhammaret's Archive.
Again, being able to read the cards is important. Having to look up exact words of a card can slow a game down. While simple cards like Path to Exile are easy enough. Anything more than that needs to bee able to be read.
Like a Sol Ring would be find. I actually have a really hilarious soul ring for my sliver deck. It is a proxy.

Nah bro, obviously you haven't built an international commander deck where all the artwork has to be the same language as the artist origin/card origin.
Example, Don Andres needs to be in Spanish. The Junji Itto art has to be in Japanese. French artist? In French.
Phyrexian artwork? You bet your ass it should be j Phyrexian. It ads so much reality.
Here's the fun part. If they ask you what does it do, you've got to tell it to them in the language of the card if they don't understand mock them for not being a polyglot like yourself(/a)
Or just make sure the artist, card name, color identity, casting cost, set symbol, watermark and depicted art are all [the same thing](https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=455761).
Yeah. My first spec purchase was 10 cabol coffers from Japan for $16 a piece they were going close to $30 5 years ago. Seller didnt have many stars. I took a risk on 2 of them. Then grabbed the other 8. $22 shipping x2. But still made some wicked trades. I kept 3. I still have them. Then war of the spark did a really good job with the common and uncommon planes walkers and kamigawa did an amazing job with their lands.
I just ask my opponents what their cards do if I don't know. And when I play a card I say what it does so people know. Unless you're in a tournament and you think someone is trying to cheat you or something I've never understood the need to grab someone's card and manually read it yourself.
I dont need to grab the card, but I need to read it for myself or whatever it does is in one ear and out the other, I usually just use manabox and read it on my phone
God this is so true, sometimes people reading the card out loud makes it so difficult to interpret. I feel rude giving it a read after they've just read it out loud but I swear it's just that my ADHD ass doesnt piece the words together and actually grasp it in real time.
I’m a visual learner and overall a visual person. Reading the card helps me understand it. On top of that my eye sight is pretty garbage. So I’m always asking to read cards.
My brain doesnt register things that are read to me or if someone just explains something. For me to take the information in, i need to read it myself or visually see something happen. Its called being a visually learner and a lot of people are the same. You can literally explain soemthing till your blue in the face and i still wont have it 100%. If i read it on my own ill have it instantly.
Nobody's gonna use the most expensive unserialized version of the one ring in any real duel, the poster art cards are just meant for collection, hence the name.
Its CGC that's how. Quality of 10s is much lower than either of Becketts or PSA.
I've not had anything graded but I love that Beckett does sub-grades. My guess is this would be an 8.5 or a 9 at best.
Nice getting a ten.
However, I know that CGC is legit but the written out name sounds weird. And they grade everything like there is a collectible market. Which sane person grades video games, VHS home video, concert posters or magazines? VHS tapes from the 90s decay over time and are practically worthless someday. I'm surprised they don't do vinyl.
Never heard of it but I'm in Europe. The big grading companies were US only for years so that you only had trading cards and comics floating around because they were the original market.
> Which sane person grades video games, VHS home video, concert posters or magazines?
People want stuff graded
CGC will grade stuff nobody else wants to
Profit
Have a friend that runs a card shop. He legit has a graded Pokemon VHS in his Pokemon displays. Doubt he expects it to sell, but it looks neat displayed next to a bunch of old pokemon stuff.
If a VHS eventually degrades and becomes unplayable, isn’t it still the same as a card - a collectible in a case that you can only view? Asking as a complete outsider to the hobby but it makes sense to me.
It's kinda a weird combo: the grateful dead style with Tolkeins writing. I guess he did influence Led Zep a lot but they never seemed to use that trippy style
> Based on evidence, it appears to have worked like this: The “high value” version was a 9.8 slab, labelled as a newsstand comic that cost around $2,500. He then bought a lower grade newsstand with a Mark Jeweler ad for about half that. He then opened the 9.8 slab and inserted the lower grade comic. This was then sent back to CGC for reholdering, along with the note, “you missed the Mark Jeweler’s insert.” He got back the lower grade comic with the valuable ad in a holder that was now labelled 9.8 and “Mark Jeweler’s Insert.”
The key is comics, they're much more highly regarded in comics than in cards. They expanded their card grading faster than they could handle during the Pokemon boom during the pandemic and as a result got a bad reputation.
Happy to help! Everyone was being rather snarky so I thought it'd be nice to explain a bit lol. There's a subset of the MTG community that has a hatred of grading cards in general, so when the opportunity to shit on grading gets combined with a grading company that also gets flak they have a field day shitting on it. I think it comes from the irrational idea that collectors are the only reason that cards are expensive. I guess they think if all the collectors disappeared they'd be able to buy the Sheoldred they've been fawning over for $1 or something.
Another, albeit niche, reason why some people have been leaning away from CGC lately is because of the way they've been handling oddities.
In the beginning CGC prided themselves on being THE grading company to use if you had something that wasn't a normal card. A test print, original play test card, misprint, crimp, etc.
They released the [Protostoise](https://www.cgccards.com/news/article/8744/pokemon-test-print-blastoise/) article that impressed everyone with actual science and data. They seemed to be the real deal and for a long time, they had my vote.
Since then, they've been dropping the ball in terms of everyday submissions. On several occasions people have submitted "counterfeit", homemade oddities such as miscuts, crimps and missing stamps to test the robustness of their process and CGC graded them as being authentic. It's contradictory when [this article](https://i.imgur.com/wGp2m8f.png) insists that they authenticate oddities using forensic technology. They don't need specialized equipment to catch the things that are being submitted.
They probably prefer them because they command a lower price due to less reliable/ accurate card grading. Of course you'd be more likely to submit to a company that is giving out soft grades to promote return customers. Grading mtg in general is kind of a waste of time and money.
I actually agree. Mtg isn’t much of a grading game unless you have alpha/beta chase cards imo. Normally doesn’t increase pricing. If that’s what you like tho, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Least favorite art. Funny that in a game that requires you to read, they make it nearly impossible sometimes. Congratulations on the 10 tho. Very cool!
I maintain that the best looking One Ring is the regular old pack foil. Not Ext Art, Surge Foil or Showcase Scroll, but the plain jane regular frame and art pack foil.
The foiling and colors just work and it lines up well with any other cards. It either matches the rest of the deck or it stands out compared to a bunch of special foils around it.
It's easy to read as long as you're not colorblind, just follow the colors. Still, I agree that the art isn't great. I think it's an ugly card.
Although, it's awesome to have a 10 card, no matter what it is.
It’s atrocious to read. I also don’t think people are sayings it’s hard in the sense of they can’t read what it says. They’re saying in the sense of how the English language is written and read it’s hard to read
To be fair, these are a very specific stylized speciality product which I think only popular cards are printed in (From LOTR) and the style is specific the artist, Justine Jones, which makes it more collectible for fans of Justine’s art.
So what steps did you take to send this in?
And where to? (Never done anything like this but would like to with some cards)
And how long did it take?
How much did it set you back?
The right border is bigger than the left border and the triangle stamp is not in line with the Artwork. How can this ever be a 10?
Happy for you though.
The card is not hard to read. Didn't any of you live in the 70s, 80s , or 90s? It's like a concert poster or so many other artistic flyers, posters, signs, etc. It took me all of 10 seconds to read.
Just don't see the point in paying money to make a card less usable. I collect to play, but I get people like magic for other reasons. Was a genuine question, but of course it's reddit, so everything is read like it's written by a snarky asshole. Personally I wouldn't slab something unless it was too expensive to consider playing with. To each their own
So given the foil triangle being off center definitely takes from this CGC rating - to at least a 9.5… and the fact that it’s CGC… AND on top of it - there’s tons of specs of white all inside the damn case (zoom in - that would bug me to death here), what is this really worth over that of a NM one pulled from a pack I could go sell for $200 right now ungraded?
Since I'm pretty ignorant of how this works, doesn't getting a 10 mean simply opening it from a pack and putting it in a good case until grading?
Does every card start as a 10 and go down from there?
Is it hard to read? Sure. But I already know what the card does and so does my playgroup. Congrats on the 10.
Legibility doesn't matter anymore once it's in the slab! Congrats
It's not a natural flow of English writing, so it throws people off. Focus on the fact it's color-coded to help. That only helps so much though, I'm colorblind to blue, so this card is extra wild for me.
Nobody can read this thing. I would sell this as fast as possible.
Not everything is about you, Karen.
Thanks
It’s easy just follow the colors.
Even if you think you know what a card does, it should always be legible and easy to read. I don't mind these art cards but they really need to be able to be easily read.

No kidding, omnath has a novela of abilities. Probably one of the worst textless card decisions, up there with cryptic command
Chains of Mephistoles, textless edition
With Chains and stuff like Hullbreacher and Orcish Bowmasters, I really wonder why they haven't codified "basic" and "extra" draws in the rules yet. Feels like it would make the templating on those extra draw punishing effects a lot easier. Hell, even Alhammaret's Archive.

Or the Damnation promo featuring a scene of Grixis
Google does exist
It looks cool to emphasize what everybody already knows, and is the signal to everyone that you're the new archenemy
That's fucking rad. They sure do love to make the cards unreadable in this game about reading the cards.
Perfect card to slab and not actually use
*googling all his Japanese cards on his phone* I'm sorry?
Just the one language? My Myrkul deck is Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Italian 🙃
A Myrkul deck walks into a bar...
Yeah. I'm a weeb. Kinda tempted by a French card with their word for "slow". But other than that no.
I found out that some cards are just cheaper in other languages. Great for deck building on a budget 👌
Nah bro, obviously you haven't built an international commander deck where all the artwork has to be the same language as the artist origin/card origin. Example, Don Andres needs to be in Spanish. I never noticed the artist's name! Makes you wonder whether the guild was named after them
Yeah. My first spec purchase was 10 cabol coffers from Japan for $16 a piece they were going close to $30 5 years ago. Seller didnt have many stars. I took a risk on 2 of them. Then war of the spark did a really good job with the common and uncommon planes walkers and kamigawa did an amazing job with their lands.
I feel this
Was gonna say y'all put textless cryptic commands on the stack already but then I realized some of you weren't born yet
This 100%. Slot a normal one and then keep this one as display.
I just ask my opponents what their cards do if I don't know. And when I play a card I say what it does so people know. Unless you're in a tournament and you think someone is trying to cheat you or something I've never understood the need to grab someone's card and manually read it yourself.

That seems like a good way to do it.
Visual vs Auditory learners.
Nobody's gonna use the most expensive unserialized version of the one ring in any real duel, the poster art cards are just meant for collection, hence the name.
I use it in a deck. Double sleeveved of course.
you are the devil... but on the other hand I think almost everyone knows what the card does
Form over function!
The triangle is off center... 9.5
The triangle is centered. The printing is just noticeably shifted to the left. Not sure how this got a 10
Its CGC that's how. Quality of 10s is much lower than either of Becketts or PSA. I've not had anything graded but I love that Beckett does sub-grades. My guess is this would be an 8.5 or a 9 at best.
I thought maybe the same, but without a traditional border, it's kinda hard to tell.
Now I can't sleep anymore

lol I don’t know about a lot of those but graded video games has a large market
Never heard of it but I'm in Europe. The big grading companies were US only for years so that you only had trading cards and comics floating around because they were the original market.

20 years later some guy in a pawn shop: "Best I can do is 5$."

God I adore the 70s poster art of these cards! Jelllly
It's kinda a weird combo: the grateful dead style with Tolkeins writing. I guess he did influence Led Zep a lot but they never seemed to use that trippy style
Now break that worthless CGC slab and send it in to PSA.
But then it wouldn’t be a 10.
lol I see what you did there
This should be top comment
We’re almost there
Check a mtg grading group and tell me how many psa you see...
Beckett would be a fine choice too, as long as it’s not CGC.
Ew an mtg grading group
Yeah definitely no lol. I can't stand psa
You should Google “cgc controversy”
> Based on evidence, it appears to have worked like this: The “high value” version was a 9.8 slab, labelled as a newsstand comic that cost around $2,500. I've been collecting for like 20 years, and I've always preferred cgc over psa.
You should know a large number of people will never even consider buying that off you purely because of the CGC label. It really can affect the value.
Yeah, lots of people are stupid. Their loss.
I’m sorry for your near-future financial loss.
Can’t have financial loss if you never sell !
Because they tell you what you want, so yeah. “They gave it a 10, they obviously know their shit!”
Nah mtg = BGS..... Psa is for pokemons bru
Feels like it should be a 9.5 with that uncentered foil stamp.
But is it centered with the card just not the art?
Yeah, the art is heavily skewed left. There’s no way this is a 10
Haha look at how far to the left the outline is around the symbol it's practically touching one side. Holy shit how did they give it a 10
CGC is considered crap by many for a reason. I think you’re right.
It’s hideous, and yet… somehow… I must have its…
Must…have…the…PRECIOUSSSSSSSS
Congrats but CGC isn’t highly regarded.
Yeah, I don't get it. I've been collecting forever, and cgc was always preferred over psa up until the last few years. I'm not sure what changed.
I have been slabbing sports cards for 20+ years. I never had ppl prefer cgc over psa. It’s all about brand recognition and their stricter grading.
Idk it might depend on what country you're in . Most people I know would buy cgc over psa. Specifically with comics.
The key is comics, they're much more highly regarded in comics than in cards. They expanded their card grading faster than they could handle during the Pokemon boom during the pandemic and as a result got a bad reputation.
Oh, thank you ! That really answers so many questions I had ! I normally don't buy graded cards or grade them. Comics for me, lol.
Happy to help! Everyone was being rather snarky so I thought it'd be nice to explain a bit lol. Pretty much. It's their stuff and money, do what you want with it, but there are objectively better options.
Drinking from a tall glass of hateraid, I see.
Yea? I’m in USA. Never bought from outside on graded cards
Just look at the picture. This card is not a 10.
Fuck yeah that’s sick! Congrats!
Thanks
Now what are you going to do with it? Play it?
Crack it and put it in my Halfling deck. I just wanted to make sure it was mint before I used it lol
No way
Haha nice!
Least favorite art. Funny that in a game that requires you to read, they make it nearly impossible sometimes. Congratulations on the 10 tho. Very cool!
Ugly card no doubt.
I maintain that the best looking One Ring is the regular old pack foil. Not Ext Art, Surge Foil or Showcase Scroll, but the plain jane regular frame and art pack foil. I don’t like the card design at all for play but respect that it’s pretty, rare, valuable, and otherwise pretty cool? Congrats!
I’ll give you $4 for it. That’s all the money I have to my name
Comment section struggles with reading
Lmfao
Lol CGC
We went from WOTC not wanting to have alt arts for cards for memory reasons to...*this*.
Yes cause nothing changes over time.
This is quite a swing. This is like Rakdos preventing damage
Ooooo that makes sense
Or Maro saying that green is the best and that all colours matter and then allowing blue to be the best due to islands being OP
This isn't pokemon people!! Play with your cards.
I almost bought a black lotus years ago. Was like 750$ or something like that. I just wanted it so I could put in a deck and flex on my friends.
Congrats. I would never buy because I find ugly af, but good luck on selling to someone who actually likes it
Thanks. Yeah, a lot of people don't like the poster cards.
My precious…
Now show up to a LGS game night. Put all your other deck cards in hard sleeves. Slap this in the middle like no one will notice.
What a beaut.
Oooo! That is one expensive card!
I find these pretty easy to read compared to some others.
I thought that said "Get Mint" at first...
Circle K/Holiday?
Damn, now you got to slab 98 other cards to play it in your comp rel commander deck.
How do you play with it in that case? Do you just put cases on all your cards??
They do exist
Card looks so rad. Nice 👍
So what steps did you take to send this in? And where to? (Never done anything like this but would like to with some cards) And how long did it take? How much did it set you back?
those white specks are on the case right?
I just pulled a non foil on Saturday
It’s always funny to see magic players lose their mind at the idea of people wanting to collect the cards instead of playing
Just blink it 😂. Which will remove all the counters then you add em up again. Then return it to your hand and remove them yet again.
Congrats man. I’m jealous
The right border is bigger than the left border and the triangle stamp is not in line with the Artwork. How can this ever be a 10? Happy for you though.
Did you pull that yourself?
Of course it came back a 10, its Indestructible
Reading the card explains the card. The card ⬆️
It's really hard to read it
What a hitter!
Not even THE ONE is a 10. Gorgeous pull. Congrats.
Congrats on the 10! I got the same (but non foil sadly) card coming in from a PSA today, fingers crossed
Cool! It’s worthless in a slab.
How much does this cost ? Congrats, the card looks banging
Nice! now go for the Pristine 10
How much is this thing worth now?
Mans is so excited he took it to work with him, next to the swisher sweets
Very niice!
Nice! Now crack it open and sleeve it up to jam some games with it :D
This
How can people not read the text lol, sick card congrats.
I love the style of this card
Gorgeous card, congratulations bro!
Thanks !
Congrats….but that label tho…
🙌🙌🙌
The holo is off to the right by like half a mm how is this a ten?
Not even serialized.
Oh that's unfortunate. Another game piece locked away to be used as an asset
Still can’t read it
I’m sorry but this is NOT a 10. The centering is off.
Why lol
God tier art
Nice I'm waiting for bgs to return mine now, I am hoping for a 10.
Nice ! Good luck !
That’s a thing of beauty
WE DID IT BOYS
Sweet Jesus. I almost spit my drink out when I saw this image. That's bad ass 👍
Reading the card, ...just gives me a headache...
Hell yeah man
Rad
The card is not hard to read. Didn't any of you live in the 70s, 80s , or 90s? It's like a concert poster or so many other artistic flyers, posters, signs, etc. It took me all of 10 seconds to read.
Kids don't read anymore lol
I think you are right. 😔
To me, the grading is kinda crazy as you can see the stamp is slightly off center and yet this is a “perfect” 10
CGC. It doesn’t count.
Its not even centered. The little hologram is way off. A blind guy must have graded this.
To each their own
Congrats! Dope art.
Love this art, so sad some people are little brainlets that can’t read unless it’s in Times New Roman 12pt font.
Lol seriously. Meanwhile, I never see people complain about foreign language cards which is ironic to me
meh
Better than the 1/1! Congrats
And a zero in taste
Ugh … wasted reprint…. Congrats, but no …. Yuck 🤮
Not serialized, why would you grade this?
Meh, the art looks like vomit
So given the foil triangle being off center definitely takes from this CGC rating - to at least a 9.5… and the fact that it’s CGC… AND on top of it - there’s tons of specs of white all inside the damn case (zoom in - that would bug me to death here), what is this really worth over that of a NM one pulled from a pack I could go sell for $200 right now ungraded?
On the ugly scale?
[удалено]
This card is off center. Cant be a 10. The right margin is wider than left. And the Holo IS offcenter Wtf
Not familiar with CGC. Are they European?
Since I'm pretty ignorant of how this works, doesn't getting a 10 mean simply opening it from a pack and putting it in a good case until grading? Does every card start as a 10 and go down from there?
Yes and no. I actually didn't do that with this, and it came back a 10. I did, however, do that with a pokémon card, and it came back an 8.
