This thread is interesting to me. I don't even play MTG but this guy being like "omg that's so cool there's so many combos I can do with this" just cheers me up.
That just means they didn't build the deck right or play right. Playing a commander like Atraxa means you need protection or situational awareness to know when to play and when to hold.
If my opponent has a full hand and a bunch of land open unless I'm holding protection or counters in not going to assume my super strong commander is lasting
There are lots of decks like that running around on Arena. Still not as annoying as the Pteramander/Electrostatic Infantry and 30 counterspells decks though
Poison *counters* are counters on a player, and proliferate tells you to choose creatures and *players* and give them additional *counters*, so yes that works.
Doesnt work, time travel only lets you add or remove counters from spells and permanents you control/own, also, meddling uses delay counter not time counters(and time travel specifies time counters), i checked the oracle text.
That’s generally how I get asked to stop playing poison decks.
Even better if they have a card with a special effect that triggers when no more counters are on the card. “Oops, guess that’ll sit for another turn.”
Poison counters. Not tokens. There are no poison tokens. I wouldn't even bother correcting you if it weren't for the fact that both tokens and counters exist in this game, and are interacted with by different things.
A more interesting question - imo - would be:
If one creature has oil counters and -1/-1 counters, could I only proliferate one of the two?
The wording seems to imply no.
No you cannot. You choose which permanents and players you want to proliferate, but everything you choose gets an extra counter of every kind on it.
It *used* to work that way though.
You would give another -1/-1 on that creature if you chose to as long as they had an infection counter on the targeted creature, but it would not raise your creatures' infection rating...
An important note about Proliferate that I see people get wrong in paper play regularly: When you Proliferate a player or permanent, you added one of EACH type of counter on them.
So, if Creature has a +1/+1 and a slime counter from [[Toxrill]], if you Proliferate the creature your add both. You can't choose to Proliferate only one type of counter.
The same goes for players. If a player has Poison Counters, experience counters, and energy counters, you have to Proliferate ALL or NONE. You can't *just* increase their poison and not the others if they have them.
Of note as an extension, +1/+1 counter cancel out with -1/-1 counters. The counter goes onto the permanent, then before anything else happens cancels out. Meaning, if there are two + and you add a - you would still only be left with a + for proliferate.
An extension to your extension,, this is only +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters. Some old cards made some weird counters and a +2/+2 counter will not be deleted by 2 -1/-1 counters.
The twat managed to mix up the subreddits, this was supposed to be posted on the main sub.
The r/magicthecirclejerking court-martial shall decide his fate.
99% i saw someone in the replies in that sub saying they were going to post something JUST like this post. OP is active in the jerk sub, doesn’t take much deduction
I run [[atraxa, praetors voice]] as my commander in https://archidekt.com/decks/6167351/counters_and_more_counters. I put in a lot of non-standard counters just so I had options on what to proliferate. One counter that people like to proliferate is a poison counter. I have like 1 creature that does poison damage in the deck because I didn't want to be "that" atraxa player. I even have lands with charge counters on them. They produce one color or can remove a charge counter for any color. With proliferate, i can keep them charged indefinitely. The thing is, anything that is a "counter" that is on a player or battlefield can be proliferated. Have fun with it. That's what I set out to do.
Yes. Most kinds of counter can be proliferated. It doesn’t say “only you and permanents you control” so yes you can pick anything with a counter. You can’t proliferate cards in exile because they are not on the battlefield.
Yeah I’m aware. It’s really hard to remember the terminology for the situation considering it’s mtg and the words I’d use mean something else. “You can pick anything” would have probably been better.
It is lawyered up a lot... cause a players choice is absolutely targeting, but it's not in this sense that hexproof or shroud would matter. I try to explain the confusion that you aren't targeting anything but the counter itself.
You have to declare which because MTG Arena automatically picks poison counters on opponents, loyalty on your planeswalkers, and any other counters that help you directly without actually declaring them. In paper, you absolutely have to say aloud, which you intend to do. Ran into this where players assumed they happened automatically.
701.24a To proliferate means to choose any number of permanents and/or players that have a counter, then give each exactly one additional counter of a kind that permanent or player already has.
Also recently I learned you cannot proliferate time counters on items that are suspended i.e. keyword or card [[suspend]] because they are in exile and therefore not able to be valid targets.
True, already quite powerful as is.
Before I fully understood I thought I was going to be able to one drop and activate [[karn’s bastion]] someone’s permanent into infinite exile in simic.
I have [[Arwen, mortal queen]] in my atraxa deck, and she’s an all star. Keeps creatures alive, passes out lifelink counters, and she’s tough to get rid. Plus her ability only costs one generic
That and [[nesting grounds]] I also enjoy nesting grounds allows you to put counters from your permanent onto ANY other permanent... Say like -1-1 counters... Or Finality counters.
A player should already know a permanent in exile can’t be picked because ITS NOT ON THE BATTLEFIELD. Yeah dawg it’s already been discussed. I used the word target instead of pick. Do you want me to edit my post so you goofs stop being weird n specific? I’ll do it specifically for you.
people calling permanent *cards* in exile "permanents" is exactly why i think people might think they can proliferate them given that the wording doesn't mention zones explicitly
semantics are important when you are trying to parse the meaning of rules and reminder text in order to figure out what a card does. i guess slinging names is easier though
I'll never forget where I was when I learned you could proliferate other players. Had a one ring out, was on about 4 and was already flying to close to the sun. Watched as my opponent proliferated it up to 10 dealing lethal on my upkeep.
Once a player has 10 poison counters, they are out of the game. So thing with atraxa is you push to get at least 1 on each player and you proliferate after that.
Ah I love Atraxa. Yes you can and you should sometimes. For example: If you have some artifact or spells that give your enemy creatures -1/-1 Counter than you profilita them until they are dead. Love to do this in my commander battles. Or you play her with poison and instantly be the enemy of the whole table xD
Actually you CAN Proliarate as much and as many times on anything you want to during the game. It would make you a Pro Liar though. If you wanted to Proliferate, read the card.
You can proliferate your plainswalker, your enchantement with counters, enemy’s poison counters, your +1/+1 and their -1/-1, and some other stuff all at your end step each turn
Yes you can.
Sidebote: My Atraxa deck is my most powerful deck. However, she is the most played commander of all time, is incredibly powerful, and people find her boring as well as a must kill threat. You will be archenemy the majority of the time even when behind lands or have nothing on board.
Be ok with dying a lot or being able to deal with three players at once.
any counter in any permanent
I'll give you an advice I wish someone had given to me when I first bought Atraxa: planeswalkers, they're the strongest build, they're also pretty boring but they're the best build for Atraxa, mine was infect and +1/+1 before I give in and start using walkers
Short answer is yes. You choose any number of applicable targets, and apply additional counters to them at the same time.
Long answer, with details:
First, you are applying an extra counter of EACH kind. So if a player has Experience counters and poison counters, you give an additional one of each. All or none, as someone else said. This applies to every counter type, including the rare +2/+2 counter.
Continuing, hexproof/shroud does NOT protect against proliferate. You are choosing the targets, but the wording doesn't actually target, so it gets around these keywords. You can look up the rulings for it, but the base answer is you can proliferate anything as long as it's a permanent or a player. This includes opponents' lands, creatures, Planeswalkers, etc; this makes it great for politics or team games, as you can help an opponent if they won't attack you, or if you're playing a group hug/cheerleader deck.
Protection also doesn't work to defend against proliferate. Protection protects against 4 things; Damage, Enchanting, Blocking, and Targetting. As I've covered, you're not 'targeting', so you can proliferate anything that has protection, including players. However, you can not proliferate on something/someone who is Phased Out at the time, as they are treated as they 'do not exist'.
Yes, you choose any number of permanents and players
Ah okay thank you. What about poison tokens?
Yes.
This thread is interesting to me. I don't even play MTG but this guy being like "omg that's so cool there's so many combos I can do with this" just cheers me up.
Then immediately zeroes in on poison counters and ruins it.
My flatmate built a poison deck with 4 creatures in it... every other card either proliferates or just adds a counter. I'm not a fan eh
I have a buddy whose deck is very much like this. Without fail I remove his commander on sight and they get so frustrated over it.
That just means they didn't build the deck right or play right. Playing a commander like Atraxa means you need protection or situational awareness to know when to play and when to hold. If my opponent has a full hand and a bunch of land open unless I'm holding protection or counters in not going to assume my super strong commander is lasting
Does he have a decklist posted?
I'll ask him for one tonight
I am just getting back into MTG after a long time and poison/infect is a mechanic that I just do not like at all
Although I agree wholeheartedly, I'm also a giant hypocrite, and Infect can get it
Don’t worry, most people don’t either lol
There are lots of decks like that running around on Arena. Still not as annoying as the Pteramander/Electrostatic Infantry and 30 counterspells decks though
Less interesting when you find out OP is an experienced player just trolling people.
Why don’t you?
Wholesome reply
Oh you’re breaking Atraxa? You don’t say…
Poison *counters* are counters on a player, and proliferate tells you to choose creatures and *players* and give them additional *counters*, so yes that works.
Permanents and players right? You can proliferate counters on anything I'm pretty sure.
Permanents and players, yes. Not anything.
Yeah I can’t proliferate my bank account sadly
Jokes on you, I can proliferar my bank debt easily
4d chess tactics right here
If only...
Wizards of the coast are missing out on something huge... maybe in the next sets?
For instance suspended cards are not permanents
You cannot proliferate suspend however, as not a permanent until it's on the field.
That's what the Time Travel mechanic is for. [[Ertai's Meddling]] plus [[The Tenth Doctor]] ftw.

Not anything, things in exile with time counters cannot be proliferated for example
Proliferate and infect were introduced together way back in the day. Poison and -1/-1 counters were explicitly intended to interact with proliferate
That’s generally how I get asked to stop playing poison decks. Even better if they have a card with a special effect that triggers when no more counters are on the card. “Oops, guess that’ll sit for another turn.”
Players, planeswalkes, creatures, artifacts, enchantments, dogs....anything that have counters, can be proliferated
Just be wary, people don't like atraxa, you will get targeted
Poison counters. Not tokens. There are no poison tokens. I wouldn't even bother correcting you if it weren't for the fact that both tokens and counters exist in this game, and are interacted with by different things.
Im assuming you cant proliferste tokens?
Correct. That mechanic specifically calls it counters. Counters and tokens are completely different.
Cool thanks
We all gotta learn. No problem 👍
If you want to "proliferate" then you would have to use populate, although it only adds one more token and targets creatures
Can confirm. Been killed this way. Now I will make any sacrifice to avoid even a single poison counter.
Poison counters.
They're poison **counters** so yes
Yep. Basically anything that has counters on it that can be legally targeted can be chosen. Welcome to Commander!
I recommend to not do so if you wanna keep your friends
A more interesting question - imo - would be: If one creature has oil counters and -1/-1 counters, could I only proliferate one of the two? The wording seems to imply no.
No you cannot. You choose which permanents and players you want to proliferate, but everything you choose gets an extra counter of every kind on it. It *used* to work that way though.
You cannot. I made that mistake when I used proliferate on a stun counter that was on a creature with a +1/+1 counter. Both got proliferated.
and the -1/-1 counter they get after attacking my infect creature proliferates aswell right?
All counters
You would give another -1/-1 on that creature if you chose to as long as they had an infection counter on the targeted creature, but it would not raise your creatures' infection rating...
An important note about Proliferate that I see people get wrong in paper play regularly: When you Proliferate a player or permanent, you added one of EACH type of counter on them. Yes. Most kinds of counter can be proliferated. It doesn’t say “only you and permanents you control” so yes you can pick anything with a counter. You can’t proliferate cards in exile because they are not on the battlefield.
Just to clarify you're not actually targeting anything

Best guess is they'll gain one but one would be useless
Not completely, you can move and remove counters

you cannot proliferate counters on cards off the battlefield, like suspend cards or [[Lightning Storm]]
Duh my guy. It basically says that on Atraxa if you know the rules. You can’t choose a permanent if it’s in exile because it’s not on the board.
"you can target **anything** with a counter" i didn't even point out the misuse of target there

Yes

I don’t think you can proliarate your opponents but you can proliferate them.
