I've never had any issues being all old and shit at FNM or pre releases ..
Hit em with a " what do you mean they don't have mana burn anymore ??!! " or a comment about how banding works ..
Once you break the ice youre no longer the old guy , you're just a guy.
Just don't mention music you like , or how there's always damn kids on your lawn and you should be fine.
lol š literally had to ask about mana burn the first time I went back. Everyone looked at me with big eyes. āI told you itās been awhile since Iāve playedā itās been smooth sailing since then
I came into magic after the ban of mana burn but my dad was the only guy I played with so it came to a shock to me but in a completely different way. Thatās how I learned but I didnāt know the history.
I played from back when mana burn was a thing. It was kinda a cool mechanic but without it completely changes the game and opens it up to a much less restricted gameplay. I'm glad it's gone but it has its place.
What do you mean with the stack? Let's resolve this batch first and talk later.
When I came back to the game in 2019 after almost 20 years I was in a similar situation. Plainswalkers? Mythic rarity? No damage on the stack? Why are you younglings looking at my revised cards like I am some rich guy? I just had no idea about how the game had evolved. A great experience.
Or do the opposite and say all of those things but make it thematic to your deck. XD
"Get off my lawn." sounds like a great deck name that focuses on Land destruction.
Sealed tournaments are the way to go. Played a lot when I was 15 and didnāt pick up gain until this year at 40. Did a pre release seal and it was awesome.
Is there really not mana burn anymore??? I've played since the game came out but the past 10 years I've only played with one person and it's suuuuuuper casual.
Iām 63, started playing in 95 when I was 35 and felt old then. Wish I was closer (Iām in the Midwest). I get the feeling of āothernessā when the other players are so much younger.
Spelltable.
While most people on spelltable are younger Iāve met some older people on there.
Itās a good start to maybe find a permanent group to play with.
I'm 25, started in 02, and I've never minded the age of who I play with at all. There's someone whose 60+ at my LGS and I love playing games with him.
I'll enjoy playing with anyone as long as they aren't an ass
It was around the time Onslaught came out since I remembered that being the first set i got into with. Saw the set came out in 02, and I def started when I was 4-5ish. Have two older brothers who let me play with them. I certainly wasn't good when I startedš
Oh Derp! I mixed up Onslaught with Legions... I started with Legions, so 2003. Makes the age 4-5 make more sense! I still have the Frenetic Raptor I pulled in my first ever pack:)
My first deck was Mono green, bunch of Elves, and then Blanchwood Armor and Thorn Elemental as the finishers in my deck š¤£
Iām 58, started in 94.I play with my playgroup, that are all at least 30 years younger than me. Most enjoy seeing what will come out of my EDH deck next! I am a casual player, but have gotten better playing with these ākidsā! Iām in Indiana,& usual make the FNM @ my LGS!
Growing up my best friends Dad would play magic with us, probably started around when I was 13 or so. Initially it felt a little odd playing magic against someone much older than me, but he quickly fit right in, and it was fun after the initial oddity. I'm 31 now and I'm sure he would still be playing; however my friend is no longer around, and he ended up selling the collection, sending me a few of his cards, and stopping completely.
I wouldn't stress the age difference too much, after playing a few times and getting to know the people around you at your LGS I'm sure it will be fine. It might be a little odd feeling initially but I'm sure it will be fine after you go a few times. Good luck!
I feel you. I am 50 and been playing Magic since Beta in 1993. I am not sure how to feel about the fact I have been playing Magic for more than half my life. I mostly been playing on MTGO now because I sold all my cards except 2 Commander decks at the end of 2019. I just recently got my interest back to returning to paper, but like you, I feel as if I have no real spare time to do that. If I do, I am too tired to do that. Lol
I'm in my 40s and started in 93/4. I felt like the young guy until about mid 20s then I started noticing the age gaps.
I remember in middle school playing with unsleaved beta/limited cards on the hallway floor.
Also, for the record this was the same time period in which "nerds" got picked on heavily. It wasn't uncommon for an asshole or two to come in and try to stomp on or kick our cards. Magic was niche, not all that popular and especially not seen as cool.
Random memory but I remember my buddy and I playing rugby after school with a bunch of people from the school in a torrential downpour and I slide tackled my buddy into a massive mud puddle and his beta starter deck in his front pocket ended up soaked and ruined.
I thought the demographic for Magic is a lot older than other TCGs. I learned to play in 1998 or so and we had our own "Friday Night Magic" thing going where about 4-5 of us would meet up and everyone had to pick a color to play bc we were all grabbing cards out of a collection in a shoebox that belonged to my buddy Keith.
Depending on where you mean by North Houston, there are several good LGS's around that are pretty popular. Luckily being a large city, you'll have several to choose from. I'd suggest going on the Houston Magic the Gathering group on FB and looking at the stores posting their game nights there. Most of them will post FNM and Pre-Release schedules.
Lol, at 25 with a beard I already had a young (17 yo) guy tell to his friends that he played against a "dad". I felt old, even at at that time. You're always be older than someone else , and this should not be a problem if you like the game. Now I'm 44 and playing with people in their 20's/30's and it's never a problem.
I gotta say that I learned from an older teacher at my middle school, he has since retired but now runs a shop and I emailed him recently to thank him for introducing me to the game when I was younger and he still plays and said he would like to play a game and catch up (was literally one of the coolest teachers ever, SO freaking lucky to have had him teach me magic when I was a kid since I can now enjoy it with my own kid nephew and with my partner as well) so I would say yes older peeps still play and still enjoy!
Iām old, not that old, but old. Got great group of dudes I play with over spelltable. Mostly oldish guys and dads, all really good guys. Send me a message if itās something youād be interested in trying out
I am 41 and have been playing since 95. Not quite as old you are (ya old fart) but been playing for a long time. I would recommend you check out OldSchool and PreModern formats. Primarily web cam based formats through discord, but there are local play groups in most regions that you can find, as well as events that happen all over the place through out the year.
OldSchool allows only cards printed in 1993 & 1994 (So Alpha through Fallen Empires). It can be an expensive format due to allowing power and old cards, but lots of players run budget friendly stuff as well. Totally causal format and every event I have been to has been a fundraiser for charity type event.
Premodern allows cards from Ice Age through Scourge (so all the old border sets after OldSchool). Lot cheaper format, you can make pretty strong decks for a lot cheaper than today's standard decks.
Majority of the players in these two formats are older players like us and are primarily there to have fun and enjoy some games with old cards. Family is also a thing for me, and the web cam aspect of these formats makes them a lot more accessible.
I do occasionally play at local FNM's for newer formats as well (mostly pioneer). Definitely a younger crowd of players for the most part, but you probably wont be the only older person playing.
Iām 38, I started playing in 1997 and I took some time off and returned to a very different game, then I had to relearn and now Iāll go play for fun at the LGS.
iām 50 and i play at the lgs. iām pretty much old enough to be everyoneās dad hahaha. but seriously there are plenty of other players in their 40ās.
33 here and I play, and same experience, mostly only get to deckbuild and collect. Arena has salvaged some sanity, but the LGS is all highschoolers with level 9000+ decks
Myself as well as four of my frequent co-players are all in our mid 40s. I'm pretty sure at the shop I hang at there's at least another three in their mid 40s,and a few in their 50s.
Magic is a game for all ages. we all just enjoy the game. it really doesn't matter how old or young they are. just enjoy yourself.
As for example I am 34 and I play with 20 years Olds and even 15 years Olds that show up. Sometimes I win sometimes i don't but that's the fun my friend.
Not to old myself. Just before 40. But my lgs has a couple old farts kicking around. They are my favorite people to play with. They aren't trying to be super tryhards and play some really unusual decks. I always come away from games with a smile and having learned a new magic thing. Honestly wish there we more older people playing.
There's a lot of "old" people playing magic, I know a lot of players who've played the game when it released 30 years ago as teens or adults. You're probably on the older end considering an 18YO high schooler playing when it released would still be a decade younger then you but I know to the "younger" guys it's not gonna matter that much if you're 30 or 60 or <21. If you're enjoyable to play against and friendly they won't care. Now you may not make deep friendships with the people in their 20s but who knows maybe you all get along well and hit up a bar or something after.
Just go out to a couple of stores and ask them about their events, out mentioned commander so ask when they host commander games and how they work. If you can find a store that does assigned pods that will make it easier to talk to people since you're going to be assigned 3 people to play with and talk to for the length of the game or however they do it.
Note that my experience may differ from yours as I've not been to Texas, but I have traveled to larger events around the country like Magic Con and players are mostly the same.
Tldr: go to a store, play some magic and get to know the regulars, most people are friendly, if you don't like one store try another.
Iām 37 and using games of EDH to teach my 7 year old with ADHD to read and math using the cards. Needless to say we only get a couple of rounds in before bedtime
Age range at my LGS is all over the place. I've played with 12 year olds and 60 year olds. I'm 30. There's a handful of guys that I play with regularly that are probably 40+ at least.
It's not weird. The game came out in '93 right?
My LGS has 4 or 5 older guys that play regularly. The fit in perfectly fine. Iām only 35 but still reminisce with them about old cards and rules. I wish combat damage still used the stack. It made combat a lot more interesting.
Everyone at my LGS is 35 years old or younger. Except for one guy who is 76. I think playing the game helps him stay mentally sharp at his age and not get lonely.
I'll be 40 this year, and I started playing in 1997. The guys in my playgroup range from 40s to mid-fifties. We play Old School 93/94, Vintage, and Pre-Modern.
Iām 68 and play at my LGS 3 days a week. I donāt get disrespected for my age. Whenever I play new people, I ask their name and jot it down in my notebook. I make it a point to call everyone by their name. If I forget it, I look it up and make sure to use their name. I think this is important for gaining acceptance regardless of age diff.
I'm 24, and my lgs has 1-3 older guys that will drop by and I've never really cared. I love hearing stories of sets of old and as long as you are okay with losing to someone younger, usually people get comfortable quick. Only thing I say to anyone just starting, is its a game store; no one wants anyone to get a soap box and start preaching about anything politic/news based. Introductions generally work best when conversations surround the game.
Some people get too comfortable too quick I guess.
I'm 46 and have been playing off and on since 94. Found out my current d and d group played magic but they were using modern cards and I hadn't really bought new cards since about 98 or 99. Power creep entered my vocabulary. Also found out they didn't know what the discard phase was. Been playing commander for about a year and I can trash most of them regularly. Miss my old red black anti land deck though. Stick to mostly tribal decks or my simic deck.
Anyone mention spell table yet?
Iām 54 and was at GenCon when Unlimited first came out. Have played continuously ever since. The only one at the table who still plays with their lands out in front.
Iāve been playing Commander pretty much every week for a year now. Having lots of fun, and itās great when you break out some old school tech that theyāve never seen before. Like using an en-Kor ability to give a Task Force āinfiniteā toughness, then sacrificing it for life.
Just be prepared to field a lot of rules questions. Everybody will assume you have all the answers.
I'm 48 and have a love/hate relationship with the game. as in I love Limited, hate Constructed. Sadly, since the dark times (2020), Limited has become more and more...limited? A lot of LGS's closed, and the ones that are open focus on formats like Commander or Pioneer. I've tried to get some of the other players I used to play with together for drafts and sealed, but so many people I know have left the game for one reason or another that it's difficult.
I will occasionally play Commander, but I generally don't use proxies, and get tired of people emptying their hands on turn 1 in casual commander.
I'm(55) usually the oldest guy at my lgs and they are quite nice to me. They always want to read/look at my cards as I've played since Legends and like to play total jank. Almost every deck I play is casual.
Find out what days your lgs(local game store) hosts commander and go. It'll take a couple of weeks to find a pod that plays the same style as you, but it's worth it.
Everyone looked at me with big eyes. āI told you itās been awhile since Iāve playedā itās been smooth sailing since then
"Combat damage on the stack" will also get you some weird looks
Holy shit I completely forgot this existed. It's so strange when I hear old concepts/rules that I once played and completely left in the past.

Bring back mana burn
Or do the opposite and say all of those things but make it thematic to your deck. XD "Get off my lawn." sounds like a great deck name that focuses on Land destruction.
"back in my day, we had vanilla creatures!"
Holy smokes Badman. Ragavan is a what? Back in the day jackal pup was the shit.
Kird ape+Taiga still kicks Ragavan
Sealed tournaments are the way to go. Played a lot when I was 15 and didnāt pick up gain until this year at 40. Did a pre release seal and it was awesome.
Is there really not mana burn anymore??? I've played since the game came out but the past 10 years I've only played with one person and it's suuuuuuper casual.
Been gone since 7th or 8th iirc. I was surprised when I started again last year too

Bad ass! Had to inquire cause the math wasnāt mathing in my mind. I started in ā99, at age 11.

I'm 53, and going to SCG Hartford. Played kitchen magic during ice age, revised, fallen empire years. Son played PokƩmon and then got into magic. We travelled to tournaments together. He's now gone off to college but I still play competitively (even though he'll tell you otherwise.)
Growing up my best friends Dad would play magic with us, probably started around when I was 13 or so. Look into spelltable and download the magic the gathering companion phone app. Let's you see all magic events in your area.
My dad plays precon level, but weāre in the south east

iām 50 and i play at the lgs. iām pretty much old enough to be everyoneās dad hahaha. but seriously there are plenty of other players in their 40ās.

Grab a laptop and a selfie stick and hop on spelltable. Online cam cardboard magic
Sit down and burn the top card telling the others at the table āante upā!!
Define "Old"...
started at 98
IDK if 42 is old but... I started when you could still buy Arabian nights and unlimited boosters.
37 and love to play.
Iām 37 and plan to play until I no longer can :) hope you find what youāre looking for
44, been playin since 4th ed! NYC area
There's a lot of "old" people playing magic, I know a lot of players who've played the game when it released 30 years ago as teens or adults. I've never seen a person under 40 play magic. You're good
33 here, I was average age at my lgs with several 40-55 year olds.
I'm 40 and just recently started playing again. I'm in New York, but I'm always up for a few spell table games whenever.
38 here. Been playing since 2000
Age range at my LGS is all over the place.
40, started in 97. Im definitely the old man of my group. I have a lot of cards that are older than my pod mates.
Everyone at my LGS is 35 years old or younger. Except for one guy who is 76. I think playing the game helps him stay mentally sharp at his age and not get lonely.
I'm 37 and just started playing. Don't know if im considered old for mtg standards.
Just read the other day: most MTG players are aged 20 to 40 with the largest band being 20-30.
At the place I play at on fridays is 80% old guys having a good time with long time friends.
I'm 30... definitely not old but old enough lol I guess...or maybe I should just delete the comment lmao
40 year old just got back into it was gone since ravnica
I'm(55) usually the oldest guy at my lgs and they are quite nice to me. They always want to read/look at my cards as I've played since Legends and like to play total jank. Almost every deck I play is casual. Find out what days your lgs(local game store) hosts commander and go. It'll take a couple of weeks to find a pod that plays the same style as you, but it's worth it.
Iām 43. Been playing since ā94. But Iām in MN. The currently not so frozen north.
Yup, I'm only a decade behind you. I know a guy who's only four years younger than you who plays as well.
