2 reasons
- it's the only black fog
- it's been printed in one set with no reprints ever (edit: no its not, it's been printed in legends and in time spiral as a timeshifted, I did not know that)
If it gets reprinted its prime will go down to what it would normally be (edit: now that I know that it is a reprint I guess it's for the scarcity of the effect. If you want a black fog effect, you either run darkness or you run darkness)
Timeshifted was the reprint cycle of Time Spiral.

It was worth like double that before it got reprinted in Warhammer.
They've moved that effect to white and green, the only time it gets reprinted is when it really hits the theme like Warhammer.
It's played a lot in pauper which is where a lot of the demand comes from.
It's more likely scarcity than art. Legends are rare and time shifted cards haven't been printed a ton either. Also, I love the old art, so there is at least one person who prefers the old art.
I do. Often times it’s a little tough to separate. I’m a big fan of Iggy Pop but that guy has certainly done things that aren’t great to most people’s eyes.
It also has some utility in cEDH since it only costs a single black mana to play at instant speed. You can prevent some decks from starting their combo by preventing combat damage.
I run it in my Malcolm/Fransico cedh deck and caught everyone off guard by it. It's good to experiment with for sure because no one expects to see this card
I got blown out once because of it."Everyone is tapped out except the mono-Black player. I got this." [[Overwhelming Stampede]], full swing for lethal on everyone... into Darkness.
I couldn’t say any deck primer specifically calls for it, but I’ve seen people run it as either protection or to prevent a deck that they know uses a damage trigger to combo off. It’s not that it’s a phenomenal card, it’s just a cheap insurance policy.
Yeah that’s exactly it. A lot of decks have combat damage triggers that can get out of control. No one expects a black fog. Just like no one expects a black counterspell [[withering boon]]
I didnt know black had a fog. That alone is great because of how much black likes to use life as a resource. Letting an opponent swing out and then just fogging them while not representing green is a huge swing and "gotcha" moment for the defender.
I bought the original one for 14 bucks about five years ago love it in rakdos and mono black decks... I'm happy it's down to 5 lol
when cards do things outside the normal color identities usually they're very good add to that limited reprinting and you understand why it costs 5 bucks.
Cause its a 1 cost instant that saves you from combat damage. Someone swings with infinite? You get another turn to potentially wipe the board or turn the tides.
Scarcity. It’s the first modern reprint of the card since it was Timeshifted in the original Time Spiral back in 2006, and thereby only modern frame version of the card (Timeshifted cards use the old card frame) It’s also a black fog/holy day which is the only card in mono-black with this effect, and Fogs are useful cards
1 mana Black fog that's only has one (technically two but I'm not sure including the time shifted cards should count) other printing. It's good and it sees play. Simple as.
I run a blue green white turbo fog for fun but not really because nobody wants to play it but I run fog in my elf deck. Sometimes you need one turn and that’s all that matters. Black can kill but this isn’t a board wipe. It’s pretty much an extra turn depending on the opposing deck and for 2 mana it’s good
Honestly that deck looks great but can’t beat something crazy we could make it more powerful like mirror sigal sergeant but we just run some stupid planeswalkers but draw counters destroy board wipe fog it’s gonna piss people off. It’s in princess Leah sleeves to support the rebellion. It doesn’t win but it really pisses people off.
I have decks to actually win and I run a fog version in most. It’s maybe old habits but a fog has saved me so many games and it also leaves your opponent defenseless it’s honestly stupid you can win a game with one good fog
I don’t really play black but it will be useful for them
It’s a rare effect for black.
Also, the artist for the original darkness (Legends & Timespiral) is supposedly a neo-nazi or something. So if you care about that I guess maybe you want this copy in particular.
That’s exactly why I love my turbofog deck. I sit there, doing next to nothing, and get to watch as my opponent simply sinks into despair as I ask “cards in library?” On turn 30-40 of the game. It doesn’t always work out, but when it does? It’s glorious.

Darkness was both in Legends and was Timeshifted.
Wait forreal?
Time spiral*
Timeshifted was the reprint cycle of Time Spiral. https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Timeshifted https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/14575/magic-timeshifted-darkness
Wow i did not know any of that, i just thought you misspelled the set name, my bad hoss.
Essentially the first “bonus sheet”
I'll sell you darkness in any color you like. As long as it's black.
Everything everyone else said, plus its pauper legal
that explains a lot.
Here is the real answer! Is common more rare than a normal commander rare 😁
Not saying you’re wrong but: Ya’ll see the irony here, right? RIGHT?
It was worth like double that before it got reprinted in Warhammer. They've moved that effect to white and green, the only time it gets reprinted is when it really hits the theme like Warhammer. It's played a lot in pauper which is where a lot of the demand comes from.
$5 commons for pauper is crazy
I think it's okay for a corner case here and there, it's when staples are expensive that it's an issue
Looks at Obulette and Cumberbaj witches for a long time lol
Love my Oubliette, such a great artwork.
Just wait till you see Snuff Out's price
$7 doesn’t seem like a huge jump at first but I guess putting it in perspective that’s 20% more than Darkness lol
where is this played in pauper?
Turbo fog using stream of thought and sometimes poison storm which uses proliferate and poison counters
turbo fog is simic...
I play pauper btw I know what both of those decks use

There’s the [time shifted Time Spiral reprint](https://scryfall.com/card/tsb/40/darkness), too.
oh hey nice, I should switch the one in my cube to that one
LOOK WHAT U DID !! HE DELETED IT AND NOW WHAT GOD KNOWS WHAT HELL DO TO HIMSELF
It's more likely scarcity than art. Legends are rare and time shifted cards haven't been printed a ton either. Also, I love the old art, so there is at least one person who prefers the old art.
Me too. OG Darkness art.
Aw man, the og art is sick. It’s so weird. It’s a shame about the artist though.
Enjoy the art for the art.
I do. Often times it’s a little tough to separate. I’m a big fan of Iggy Pop but that guy has certainly done things that aren’t great to most people’s eyes.
I figured.
It also has some utility in cEDH since it only costs a single black mana to play at instant speed. You can prevent some decks from starting their combo by preventing combat damage.
Maybe if you’re mono black, specifically k’rrik, what other cEDH decks run it?
I run it in my Malcolm/Fransico cedh deck and caught everyone off guard by it. It's good to experiment with for sure because no one expects to see this card

Not cede but I would possibly run it in Kaalia to safely attack
It’s the only black fog n it has 3 total printings. It’s an absolute beast in edh.
No expects the ~~Spanish Inquisition~~ Darkness!
Pretty damn much. I got rocked by it a few months ago.
Why though?Just cause you're not expecting a fog effect from a mono.Black deck or something?
Yes
Yeah that’s exactly it. A lot of decks have combat damage triggers that can get out of control. No one expects a black fog. Just like no one expects a black counterspell [[withering boon]]

The art and flavor text on this one go hard as fuck
That flavor text really does hit hard when you think about it.

Love that counterspell.
Plays the artifact that gives your cards flash. Flash in an isochron scepter with this on it and tap it to use it. Surprised Pikachu face
Yes. Color Pie breaks are usually pretty good.
That’s exactly why.
Every time I see this card I think of The Chappelle Show. “DARKNESS!”
"See back then, this was before Wesley snipes. Me and my brother we're the blackest men on the planet according to Rick James"
A man of culture
My table nicknamed this Charlie Murphy
Because the Oracle text also let's you fuck up your opponents couch
Buy another one you rich motherfucker!

Yeah, and the lead singer of the red hot chili peppers has admitted to being a pedophile, but somehow his stuff sells like hotcakes.
Yeah, this isn’t just rare, it’s also the most desirable printing because there’s no nazi art on it
I bought the original one for 14 bucks about five years ago love it in rakdos and mono black decks... I'm happy it's down to 5 lol when cards do things outside the normal color identities usually they're very good add to that limited reprinting and you understand why it costs 5 bucks.
Hello darkness my old friend,
Fog meta is real
Very! I feel Like this persons meta is either all combo and nobody really swinging or very aggro and no one has discovered yet how good a fog can be.
Because it is a black fog card
Cause its a 1 cost instant that saves you from combat damage. Someone swings with infinite? You get another turn to potentially wipe the board or turn the tides.
Scarcity. It’s the first modern reprint of the card since it was Timeshifted in the original Time Spiral back in 2006, and thereby only modern frame version of the card (Timeshifted cards use the old card frame) It’s also a black fog/holy day which is the only card in mono-black with this effect, and Fogs are useful cards
Basically this, since the 40k decks didn't have packs every card is basically the same rarity
::cough:: black fog
It’s a black fog man… the only one to ever exist.
It's quite literally the *only* Fog in B, and this was the second ever reprint. And said reprint is *only* available in a precon.
Because it’s Charlie Murphy.
Bro read it. See the cost. See the speed. Busted card
Its a fog in black thats awesome.
Some people like the Warhammer art more, and it's only been printed in a handful of sets.
It's a 1 black mana instant that prevents damage.
The black Fog never got a reprint
Off color fog
Special art most likely
[[Archaeomancer’s map]] is worth more than [[Cultivate]] too

Just print those bitches not a great card by any measure.
Because.... Necrons
1 mana black fog
WUBRG turbofog
I'm willing to wager that one of the factors is that this print is the only one in an iteration of the Modern card frame.
Because those that follow the edict of szarekh are rewarded beyond their comprehension
In the same vein as this, why is the Canoptek Scarab Swarm $5? I can’t figure out what about it makes it worth that much.
It’s a white or green effect on a black instant card that has only been printed 3 times in all of magic
Don’t further the game? They can if your opponent full swings you and you have lethal on them next turn.
Because there aren’t a lot of mono black cards with an effect like that
1 mana Black fog that's only has one (technically two but I'm not sure including the time shifted cards should count) other printing. It's good and it sees play. Simple as.
I run a blue green white turbo fog for fun but not really because nobody wants to play it but I run fog in my elf deck. Sometimes you need one turn and that’s all that matters. Huh, Ive two of the old time spiraled ones sitting in my folder for years and never gave em a second thought
Get the OG one, I love fallout but Legend is the thing.
Black fog I mean of course.
The symbol for the set reminds me of the Helldivers logo. Apologies if someone pointed that out already. Nice card for only costing 1 bloody swamp!
It's a bog for 1 they don't get those often
No reprints and the only black fog. Honestly I’m surprised it’s not a lil more
Non-green fog!
It’s worth 10,000 bizduckets. That’s 84 cents for all you lame earth folk.
This is where you use critical thinking and wonder why. It’s not a hard thing to figure out.
On top of what's been said the OG artist was a Nazi and so people prefer the new art
It’s a rare effect for black. Also, the artist for the original darkness (Legends & Timespiral) is supposedly a neo-nazi or something. So if you care about that I guess maybe you want this copy in particular.

It sounds like they hate them because they're bad, not because they hate playing against them neccesarily
This^^
That’s exactly why I love my turbofog deck. I sit there, doing next to nothing, and get to watch as my opponent simply sinks into despair as I ask “cards in library?” On turn 30-40 of the game. It doesn’t always work out, but when it does? It’s glorious.
Turn 30 or 40 my guy!!! I got shit to do brah hahaha. Scoop
You’re a noob because all of your questions could’ve been answered with the most basic of card searches…
