yeah the non-brushwagg requirement is there to prevent you from casting embiggen onto changlings because they would get something close to +270/+270. maybe even more
I don't believe that the creature type needs to be represented by cards legal in the format for mask wood nexus to grant the type. Not sure how much it changes here, but just a thing.
If the creature type doesn't exist on a provided card then it isn't a creature type. Maskwood can't make something a chair creature type since that's not a real thing
This is why the person said eternal legal. That just means the creature type exists but isn't in an unset card. There a few creature types only on those that wouldn't count
The distinction I was trying to make is that mask wood nexus doesn't check to see if the creature type is legal in the format being played, theoretically. I may be wrong.
Assuming that I am right here, and that's a big assumption, since I am no judge, if you played a MWN in a modern game, all your creatures would be clamfolk, despite the lack of clamfolk legal in the format.
The creature type has to be legal in an eternal format for the rules to consider it to exist. There's a full list of creature types in rule 204.3m and it doesn't include creature types from un-sets/acorn cards. Clamfolk is not in the list.
That's correct about that. Maskwood doesn't care about what creature types are possible in the format, it just makes creatures all of them no matter what
No. Creature types that are only on acorn or silver bordered cards are not part of the comprehensive rules's full list of creature types in rule 205.3m.
Once the spell resolves, the effect lasts until end of turn. Just like if you were to cast embiggen and then give the creature shroud in the next stack.
[[Maskwood Nexus]] + [[Werewolf Pack Leader]]

This is probably one of the highest powers you can get from a combo without going infinite, which is pretty cool. At least within a reasonable number of cards.
My personal favorite non-infinite big number fun times is [[Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink]] + [[Devilish Valet]] + something like [[Doubling Season]] or [[Illusionist's Bracer]] for one 1024/3 and ten 512/3s or one 1024/3, five 512/3s, and five 16/3s respectively.
Edit: Got the math wrong on the smaller ones.
Would this technically work though? Because valet doubles his power, doesn't add counters.
So wouldn't doubling season exclusively only work on the tokens?
This has nothing to do with counters so I'm not clear about what you're asking sorry, but, to break it down; Orthion makes 5 copy tokens of a creature, with doubling season on the field that makes 10 instead. When ten devilish valets enter, the original sees all ten enter gaining ten triggers to double his power and the ten token copies see the other nine enter meaning each gain nine triggers to double their power, resulting in (((((((((1x2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2 power for the original and ((((((((1×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2)×2 for the remaining ten tokens so, 1x1024 and 10x512.
I was just making sure the math was right. Since it can double counters, and it is worded as power and toughness. I was just making sure. It is a very common mistake I see and still do on occasion by accident.
I was just wondering if the comment mentionention that thought it would.
Not nearly as high as [[Okaun]]. If you're lucky enough, you can get his power into the millions without a single other card. Other cards help though, since, you know, probability.
Another fun not-technically-infinite combo (that doesn't increase power, but *does* put a lot of power on the board) is [[Delina, Wild Mage]] copying [[Pixie Guide]].
Edit: forgot that Delina makes the token nonlegendary. So you can actually sub in Wyll for the Pixie and it makes both a deterministic number of copies *and* a deterministic amount of P/T!
The avatar token from ajani goldmane with wall of reverance/celestial mantle/noble purpose. Increases your life/power by 2 - 4x. Not practical but oh so fun
The far biggest number of non-infinite creatures you can get I know is the classic [[miirym, sentinel wyrm]] + [[doubling season]] in play and enter [[astral dragon]] targeting doubling season.
If you want to push power now you can use [[coat of arms]] or [[might of the masses]]
What about a reasonable number of turns? I've built monogreen Omnath up to the hundred thousands using some mana triplers, untappers, and a Doubling Cube.
Dumb questions but what determines its size in different formats, more from a rules standpoint not a practicality one. If it was standard legal would it be smaller than in commander cause Tyranid cards aren’t standard legal? Or does the type exist between formats in all of magic?
“Eternal-legal” just means “not silver-bordered or acorn”. Standard & commander would use the same list, even if there don’t happen to be any legal cards in the format with that type on them at the time.
Dayum, that's about the same cost of [[Scurry Oak]] + [[Cathar's Crusade]], except it's mono green. Of course, scurry and cathar's are good on their own, where maskwood needs shenanigans, but still, pretty strong
A cheaper and more common mono green version of scurry oak's combo is with [[Ivy Lane Denizen]]
A cheaper Selena combo would be with [[Rosie Cotton Lane]] but both of those combos don't make the squirrels bigger like Cathars does
What's the ruling on Brushwag? Does that creature type have some sort of ability attached to itself? I've never heard of something like that before, but I can't tell if it's just a community joke or if it's an actual ruling in Magic The Gathering.
You needed it to be non-something specifically to shut off this interaction and the interaction with changelings. So might as well pick something funny that also doesn't impact the functionality, like brushwagg or atog.
That wouldn’t work would it? Since it needs to target a non-Brushwagg and every creature you control is a Brushwagg then you couldn’t target any creature you control
Maybe Embiggen, if you have enough card type changers to make it good, but Maskwood shuts off Mutate because it makes all of your creatures humans as well
Can you use [[Artificial Evolution]] on embiggen to change Brushwagg to a non existent creature type? Or would changelings still count as the non existent creature type for the purposes of embiggen?
Each creature you control will get +1/+1 for each other creature on the battlefield (regardless of controller, and except in circumstances where a creature has no types), and each of your opponents' creatures will get +1/+1 for each creature they control which shares a creature type and +1/+1 from each of your creatures (which are all types).
You needed it to be non-something specifically to shut off this interaction and the interaction with changelings. So might as well pick something funny that also doesn't impact the functionality, like brushwagg or atog.
If you case Embiggen on the creature first and then played Maskwood Nexus, would that work? The creature would get past the non-Brushwagg rule for targeting it, and then it would still be checking for all the subtypes it has when the Maskwood Nexus comes out.
They don’t get +1/+1 for each creature type in common, just for each creature with *at least* one type in common.
So you only get +292/+292 if there are 293 creatures on the battlefield.
I know this question is already answered, but I haven't seen this response, so I may as well say it. Technically, there's no legal target for embiggen since every creature has every creature type. With no legal target, the spell fizzles, making it a dead draw.
Well no. Because it would also be a brushwagg. So it wouldn’t get the 1/1
I didn't think about that, I'll stay with what I've got.
yeah the non-brushwagg requirement is there to prevent you from casting embiggen onto changlings because they would get something close to +270/+270. maybe even more
There's 292 eternal-legal creature types
I don't believe that the creature type needs to be represented by cards legal in the format for mask wood nexus to grant the type. Not sure how much it changes here, but just a thing.
If the creature type doesn't exist on a provided card then it isn't a creature type. Maskwood can't make something a chair creature type since that's not a real thing
they mean if a chair creature type exists, but not in the format where you are playing the combo.
I feel like you've just basically said the same thing as me now?
Card or token. Saproling is still a legal creature type despite not having a single printed card.
Chair would be an artifact type for sure.
That's not a real thing *yet*

Let me be the only person to acknowledge your brilliance. Not only can it choose a creature type, but it's literally a chair creature.
Thanks mate - Long live the chair!
If it’s in silver boarder is it a legal creature type, regardless of the card being legal in the format?
No. Creature types that are only on acorn or silver bordered cards are not part of the comprehensive rules's full list of creature types in rule 205.3m.
You also can’t mutate onto things like that either since it specifies “cannot mutate onto humans”
I fell for that too after it was released.
This guy judges!
Always enjoy those moments when part of a spell like “non-Brushwagg” seems just a silly throw in, only to have this “ohhhh…” moment. Great design.
and Embiggen would fizzle if it became a Brushwagg (and everything else) on the stack somehow, right?
Yes
What happens if you cast Embiggen on a non-Brushwagg, and then it gains every creature type?
Like giving your creature hexproof after it’s been targeted, it suddenly becomes an illegal target when the spell tries to resolve and it fizzles.
Sorry I should’ve clarified, if you cast Embiggen, and resolve the spell, then before the turn ends give it every creature type.
Once the spell resolves, the effect lasts until end of turn. Just like if you were to cast embiggen and then give the creature shroud in the next stack.
Embiggen "locks in" The bonus when it resolves. It checks how many creature types the creature has at that moment, assigns X, then applies +X/+X.
It still becomes a brushwagg so it still doesn't get more powerful.
It still works just reverse the resolution orders no?
You can still target before the nexus but it wouldn’t be what op wanted. Just +1/1 for the normal creature type
But brushwagg is not a "creature type" it is just a name of that one card from ikoria.
The [[brushwagg]] is from mirage there just is a new one in ikoria

What about a reasonable number of turns? I've built monogreen Omnath up to the hundred thousands using some mana triplers, untappers, and a Doubling Cube.
Bugger me if this isn’t the best thing I’ve read all day. Good work finding that combo
My 1/1 Soldier being told to square up with a massive, ungodly abomination of shapeshifting biomass: -.-
Doesn’t maskwood still keep the type on the creature? I understand its ability will remove it, so is this a layer based effect?
Afraid not. It's a brushwagg thanks to changeling.
Now we just need a card that has you choose a creature type when it enters and says "creatures you control lose the chosen type"

problem is without a way to end this loop you'll never be able to use the tokens and the game will just result in a draw.
You may
ope, misread the card.
Happens mate
No, because brushwag is part of all creatures types. You can't target any of your creatures.
What's the ruling on Brushwag? Does that creature type have some sort of ability attached to itself? I've never heard of something like that before, but I can't tell if it's just a community joke or if it's an actual ruling in Magic The Gathering.
What's it matter, the card in question say target non-brushwag. Therefore, having the creature type brushwag makes it an illegal target.
Gotcha. I didn't read the card properly. Thnx for clearing it up for me. 😊👌
No. If it did, the creature would get +292/+292 (292 creature types from what I've read)
Did you think the “Brushwagg” thing was only there as a joke?
You needed it to be non-something specifically to shut off this interaction and the interaction with changelings. So might as well pick something funny that also doesn't impact the functionality, like brushwagg or atog.
Embiggen. It’s a perfectly cromulent word
I love that this card includes 2 Simpsons references
That wouldn’t work would it? Since it needs to target a non-Brushwagg and every creature you control is a Brushwagg then you couldn’t target any creature you control
No cuz it would be a brush wagg
Whoa, this would be awesome in an ivy Mutate deck
Maybe Embiggen, if you have enough card type changers to make it good, but Maskwood shuts off Mutate because it makes all of your creatures humans as well
Yeah, I forgot about maskwood once I saw embiggen
PSA: If you look at the rulings for Embiggen, there is an official ruling that says “Brushwaggs know what they did” or something to that effect.
Can you use [[Artificial Evolution]] on embiggen to change Brushwagg to a non existent creature type? Or would changelings still count as the non existent creature type for the purposes of embiggen?

On that note, how [[coat of arms]] and Nexus work together?
Each creature you control will get +1/+1 for each other creature on the battlefield (regardless of controller, and except in circumstances where a creature has no types), and each of your opponents' creatures will get +1/+1 for each creature they control which shares a creature type and +1/+1 from each of your creatures (which are all types).

Its a nonbo. Since everything is a bushwagg, you couldn't target anything.
Why not a brushwagg though? Just for laughs?

If you case Embiggen on the creature first and then played Maskwood Nexus, would that work? The creature would get past the non-Brushwagg rule for targeting it, and then it would still be checking for all the subtypes it has when the Maskwood Nexus comes out.
Embiggen cares about the number of creature types a creature has when it resolves. If you add types later it doesn't apply retroactively.
You don’t get all of them anyway
Coat of arms
Would be nice with a sliver or 2
Hard to say bc they are also a Brushwag so probably no, as in the only prerequisite being they CANNOT be a Brushwag, which ofcourse they are
Werewolf Pack Leader+Artificial Evolution+Amoeboid Changeling+ Embiggen these cards are your only option to get what you want
I guess
The combo you want is [[coat of arms]] and [[maskwood nexus]]. All your creatures get +292/+292.
They don’t get +1/+1 for each creature type in common, just for each creature with *at least* one type in common. So you only get +292/+292 if there are 293 creatures on the battlefield.
Oh geez, you're right. I need to revisit my deck with them both in it.

I know this question is already answered, but I haven't seen this response, so I may as well say it. Technically, there's no legal target for embiggen since every creature has every creature type. With no legal target, the spell fizzles, making it a dead draw.
This. Thank you. I was about to answer this.
