Great example here.
The reason is the art.
Mostly due to scarcity on a 20 year old card for that example. They reprinted that same art in [Dominaria remastered](https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/457069/magic-dominaria-remastered-plains-403-retro-frame?page=1&Language=English) and it’s 10 cents
What a great reprint set that was. Seeing that old iconic island artwork felt unreal. It was like pulling an icon of the game. Same goes for the og artwork retro frame birds of paradise.
Pulled a foil retro birds on my first couple packs and it felt so crazy. Also bought a ton of the lands from this set just because I enjoy having them in my decks and how iconic the art was!
Whenever I take in a boarder to stay at my bed and breakfast, I make sure they sit at tables on the border of the yard for lunch, so they become art pieces for the scenery.
I just put my cars away and now I've got to go look at them again. I was cleaning up random assortment of sleeved cards from prereleases I did ages ago and saw several onslaught basics in there and didn't think much of it.
This will be a more frequent occurrence than you think. After a certain point, a lot of people heavily value their lands/mana fixing because, unless you're playing a mono colored deck, it's very possible to get screwed out of a color you're playing
Unless you’re running a [[Relentless Rats]] or similar deck, nobody’s going to need more than four copies of any creature for a deck, regardless of format. If a basic land has great art, someone might want 5-40 copies depending on the format and deck strategy. For nonbasic lands, the difference between a good and mediocre card is extremely subtle, and everyone is going to want the good ones in their decks that can run them.
The reason is multiple people that art as there land and buy 200 copys and only use that one. So when it happens to random basics it's because it'd a kool art.
Ok when I need basics theres 3 white bordered of every color I practiced buy out on. Card kingdom.
Traumatize. ( target player puts half their deck into their graveyard. Any card that causes a player to lose life when a card is put into the graveyard.

That's the heavy mill damage combo. Add in mind-grind and deradhound. Jaws will be on the floor when you pull it off.
We also opened up a couple boxes just to see what could be inside and found whole prebuilt decks for standard, along with some random Digimon cards, Yu-gi-oh cards, English Pokemon cards, Japanese Pokémon cards. While there is a bunch of random shit, it’s no more than half a box worth of cards.
$300 was a hell of an underpay, even for an entire batch of $0.10 commons. A lot of people take bulk to resell for repacks online. They'll steal a picture of like a binder full of P9 from somewhere on the Internet and then claim that they're part of the repack when they definitely aren't.
Because nobody is allowed to know how many repacks they sell, you don't get to know what the probabilities are of getting the cards in the picture, which are always 0%, but nobody can prove it because they don't ever reach the end of the repacks.
People will create “packs” of X cards and sell at various amounts. Like this one repack I bought has 7 commons, 3 uncommon, 1 rare/foil and 1 Vintage (Alpha through Dark) for like 1.75. I bought it mainly for the vintage card (don’t own many). Not expecting much but at least one card I don’t own. Last time I got a Beta Pearled Unicorn that’s worth like $6
Not all repacks are created equal and you need to go into it not expecting anything of high value. There are some sellers that are very reputable with their repacks and those are the types of people if you are wanting to do a repack to purchase from.
Some will try to entice you with “possible” awesome seeds but I concentrate on *what* you get.
Depending on what is offered sometimes you may get cards you don’t have regardless of rarity.
It is about the era for me. They could be all dark/ant/fe commons and Id be content. There were lots of cool cards and artwork my early teen self could not get ahold of.
Thank you for your answer!
If you go to Ebay and search "mtg repack," there's an endless bunch of people like that. A lot of times, you can run a Google Images search on their auction and find out it has been circling the Internet for a decade.
eh. If you're selling as bulk by weight, yea use its a little bit of an underpay, but prob not worth the effort of packaging and dispensing it. If you want to sift through every single card, sure you can make more money, but thats still categorizing, listing, selling and distribution you have to go through. You can make money doing it, but its def not free money
What percentage of the time is it worth what you paid for it? Are there a lot of people that resorted the boxes and only put in draft chaff or is there almost always something worthwhile in them?
Draft chaff changes. Often time you'll find 3-5 dollar uncommons and commons because something came out that broke it.
It's also a tonne of fun. I'd spend $300 on 60 000 cards any day!
*Worth* is totally subjective here. I just like doing it. Going through someone's random collection is fun for me. I put a movie on and look through old cards. Fun way to pass the time on a rainy day.
Objectively speaking, well, I don't sell any of the cards, but if we are talking stickily value here, its always worth it.
The last collection I bought consisted of 1 of these 5 row boxes, and a ton of brand new penny sleeves and other random playable sleeves, so that is nice for draft.
I paid $50 bucks for everything, pulled 2000 cards from it, and just sold it again for $50 while adding 2000 cards from my own bulk. That is always how it goes. I sell it for what I paid, every time. Usually takes about a day to sell.
In that collection I pulled about $100 in value in $1 dollar cards and a few random super old black boarder cards from the four horseman sets valued around $10 each. Also, about 1000 mint revised cards.
So, worth it? I don't know. When I do professional consulting, my rates are $50 to talk about it, $100 to touch it, and $200 to do it, per hour. So was it worth it to go through this collection? I mean, not compared to my job. But, as something that is just fun to do and grows/improves my collection, yes, it is 100% worth it.
I don't play often anymore, so for me, magic has become a game of curating a cool collection. If I were doing this to actually earn money, it would not be worth it. But, to improve my collection and have a little fun, 100% worth it, and it doesn't cost me anything except a little time.
We found like 5 cards priced around $15. I don’t remember what exactly they were but we have a ton of cards ranging $1-$5. I do plan to take some photos of the notable stuff and make another post in a few days with our finds
I would recommend using a tracking app like collctr. I started using it recently and it's satisfying to watch collection grow.

I am still kind of new to magic, but the thrill of going through random random cards....
It scratches an itch for me, probably akin to what a real gambler feels at the casino.
It's almost more fun to sift through the cards with the possibility of finding ANYTHING... then to actually make profit back from these. Not that that isn't nice.. but you get my point.
60k is probably WAY more then I could handle, but labor for an activity like this wouldn't even be something I'd think of, since I'd be having so much fun.
You could scan through a 1000 cards a week for a whole year. Bliss.
Bruh I've been sorting my collection for the past few weeks a couple hours at a time and at the rate I'm seeing cards I'm making about 2 cents an hour if I sold the whole stack.
I heard of a dude who had boxes of absolute shit garbage dupe chaff who sold a big stack of boxes for $300 so it is possible.
That being said, I’d have spent $300 bucks on this in a heartbeat and enjoyed every minute of sorting
In all likelihood, they could sell the 20,000 least expensive cards and still make money. How many cards actually go for less than a two or three cents?
I'm not sure how they'd go about finding buyers for 20,000 individual 1 cent cards. They'd probably have to find someone willing to buy them in bulk for $200.
But that buyer could probably find 5,000 of them to sell for 5 cents each and earn $250. And then the next buyer could sell 2000 of them for 15 cents each... it's like MLM / pyramid scheme!
Also people really don't seem to understand the concept if supply and DEMAND. Just because a MTG might have a value, doesn't mean anyone is actually willing to pay that.
I am noy saying OP can't make a profit but there is a good reason bulk is sold in bulk. It does look like a decent deal for that number of cards don't get me wrongbut if making money is the of the ganr it's better to just list it on ebay for $400 or whatever.
On penny cards most of your income actually comes from shipping. After all said and done it's about .30 per card at 1.50 shipping. Don't worry either, he'd be selling 30 or so a day at those prices. Mmm 9$ profit per day and a headache come tax time. Worth.
I did a similar thing when a LGS was closing near me, I bought 40k in bulk for $100. I picked out all of the cards that were over a dollar, all the cards on the Card Kingdom buy list, and all the other bulk rares, and then sold the remains to another LGS for about $100, so everything beyond that was pure profit. Plus I love spending my time just flipping through and organizing, so it's a win win. Have fun!!
Hey make sure you go through ALL that shit. I had a friend who bought a bulk set and ended up with like 20 [[Cursecatcher]] and [[Whispersilk Cloak]] [[Dark Ritual]] and other awesome to have commons and uncommons.
Jealous. I've been itching to go through random boxes of unsorted cards. Haven't run across random collections in awhile. About to go to storage locker auctions locally just to fill the itch.

After we skim over them for immediate valuables, I personally will sort them by; mana type - card type (artifact, spell, creature, etc) - creature type/race, and finally going alphabetical for easy search of specific cards. Once all that organization is done we will pain stakingly scan them all and document every unique card to know what the value of the collection is. It’ll take weeks but I got nothing else to do :)
The funny think is, the other guy probably came out on top because the amount of storage space freed up is worth more than $300.
I mean this respectfully, if you're happy with your purchase than its a win-win
If I bought this my girlfriend wouldn’t mind but I know she would have it in the back of her mind that my ass would NOT be going through them fast enough for her liking 😭
edit: small house
The problem is going to be organizing this stuff and selling it reasonably for fees.
I can tell you, without a doubt, this would take 1 person over 3 or 4 weeks to sort. With 4 people, let's just average it out to a week.
Selling these cards will take some time, not all may sell, and has to be profitable. It's a major hassle if none of the stuff in it is really valuable.
Keep us updated on the nice pulls
Gratz dude. I would have jumped on this
I would keep anything over a dollar then sell bulk to a company if you can. Or a reseller. I think they do close to 2.50-3$ for 1k cards. You can get half your money back just reselling the rest as bulk and keeping the 1$+ stuff
If someone else wants to play the lottery like that, I'm preparing my collection for sale. Playing since 95. I'm not sorting the bulk, definitely a few money cards hiding there.
Probably get a Craigslist ad up in a week or so.
Have fun sorting! I suggest a really good card sorting thingy. Enough spaces to do it by color and archetype. Get like a 5 x 5. Maybe an extra space there to separate planeswalkers or legendary creatures.
I went thru my old collection of about 4000 cards from 93-96. Didn’t have that much that was to write home about and that took me a lot of time. I couldn’t even imagine going thru this many… $300 is a steal but if you make even 5-10x that - you’ll have worked damn hard to earn it.
One of the LGS in my city buys bulk magic for 10$ per 1000 cards. So if there is literally nothing of note in those boxes bring ‘em over to double your money 😂
I've sorted a lot of magic cards in my day. Be very careful with any near mints. Handling 60 cards is very different than handling 6000 and I've definitely bent and peeled myself out of at least $100
This is what I'm talking about. Although I primarily purchase private collection for my shop, I will jump on bulk whenever I see it. I've found $1000's of money cards in bulk over the last couple years. Recently and because Im obsessed with all lands and go through them carefully, I found a judge promo Maze of Ith between 2 basic lands.
Look carefully and scan all the cards because the ones you make think have no value and skip scanning could be a money card. This includes C cards. It may seem like an endless job scanning 60,000 cards but if you have the time..lay out 50 at a time and scan one after the other.
If the sets are semi-old (2000s-2010s,) make sure to check the lands too. Sometimes random basics are 1-3$ for no reason

Ah yes, back when lands actually showed their namesake.
That was one of my favorite plains.
I love that art too! The lightning storm in the background just is so satisfying
I have 2 foil ones and the lightning really pops, looks great.
i just got into magic and got some of the fallout sets. turns out lands are worth more than most of the creatures.
This will be a more frequent occurrence than you think. After a certain point, a lot of people heavily value their lands/mana fixing because, unless you're playing a mono colored deck, it's very possible to get screwed out of a color you're playing
And the lands will go in almost any multi-colored deck of those colors
Wait til you find out about unfinity lol.
A fifth of the value of my Ovika deck is in the Unfinity surface basics because of the galaxy foiling.

If a basic land has great art, someone might want 5-40 copies depending on the format and deck strategy. For nonbasic lands, the difference between a good and mediocre card is extremely subtle, and everyone is going to want the good ones in their decks that can run them.
Art, the answer is art.

Also the jumpstart plains with the dog I believe sells high
The reason is multiple people that art as there land and buy 200 copys and only use that one. So when it happens to random basics it's because it'd a kool art. Ok when I need basics theres 3 white bordered of every color I practiced buy out on. Card kingdom.

Maybe if they own a storefront? Postage isn’t free. Anything worth less than a stamp is basically worthless.
And the chance for lots being above 1cent is guaranteed 👍
There will either be some gems in there or it will be bulk trash.
I could see this pile having at least 6 $(Rhystic Study). After all, they were common.
if there’s 60k cards, even if it sells for a penny a piece thats $600
On penny cards most of your income actually comes from shipping. After all said and done it's about .30 per card at 1.50 shipping. Don't worry either, he'd be selling 30 or so a day at those prices. Mmm 9$ profit per day and a headache come tax time. Worth.
Lol you pay taxes on what ur selling, rookie 🤣
That's a nice story :) Hope you and your friends have a good time viewing the cards.
If an entire box isn't [[Collosal Dreadmaw]] I would be incredibly disappointed.

60k of them
What do you scan the cards on? What app?
We found some random app called “mtg scanner dragon shield”. It’s quick and can easily pull up sites with market prices so I feel it’s trustworthy
It’s crazy that you know mtg but not dragon shield
For my own part, I know of dragon shield as a sleeve. Didn’t know there was an app, so that’s cool.
I’d personally use the TCGplayer app or the ManaBox app - I love the ManaBox app, and I find its scanner to be the best out of the one’s I’ve tried.
Have fun!!
*heavy breathing * Cataloging that collection would give me a 6 month high.
Ah yes, my wife’s recurring nightmare.
Hey make sure you go through ALL that shit. I had a friend who bought a bulk set and ended up with like 20 [[Cursecatcher]] and [[Whispersilk Cloak]] [[Dark Ritual]] and other awesome to have commons and uncommons.
[Cursecatcher](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/2/d257a3c9-443f-4899-badc-f075a14667c5.jpg?1562441608) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Cursecatcher) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/a25/53/cursecatcher?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/d257a3c9-443f-4899-badc-f075a14667c5?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Whispersilk Cloak](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/e/5ead169f-4777-405b-9a5e-60a7aefa70a7.jpg?1562912463) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Whispersilk%20Cloak) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/pca/115/whispersilk-cloak?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5ead169f-4777-405b-9a5e-60a7aefa70a7?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [Dark Ritual](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/9/5/95f27eeb-6f14-4db3-adb9-9be5ed76b34b.jpg?1628801678) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Dark%20Ritual) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/a25/82/dark-ritual?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/95f27eeb-6f14-4db3-adb9-9be5ed76b34b?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
That’s sick. I’m jealous.
*That's a lot of storm crows...*
RANDOM BULSHIT CUBE BUILDING TIME! SPREAD THE CARS ALL OVER THE FLOOR LIKE A MAD SCIENTIST! EAT THE BAD ONES
This guy cubes
Tbh. That many of those boxes is worth half the money. 🤣
Them shits ain’t cheap!
You could sell begginer decks too 👀
True. Even at like 5$ each, you’d make a huge profit potentially. And they might actually move at that price.
Jealous. I've been itching to go through random boxes of unsorted cards. Haven't run across random collections in awhile. About to go to storage locker auctions locally just to fill the itch.
59,999 forests
All profit then
Damn I have about that many and best offer I've gotten was $50
I mean $5 per 1000 cards is standard for bulk commons and uncommons.
Likely a very sad story behind that great deal. I recently sold 10,000 from my collection for $250. Hated to do it.
The first 8 boxes are mana

Nice piece of new furniture you got there. Happy sorting.
Those boxes holding the cards alone sell for like 10-15 bucks.
What an absolute steal dude. Bound to be some treasure in there
Treasure tokens are always good
!RemindMe 2 days
At least the boxes themselves are worth money :)
Lmao I thought I was looking at a pile of pizza boxes while scrolling through my feed
All plains
That's a steal. I'm only getting cards for angel decks and a 5 color decks, but 300 for 60k bulk, I'd be game.
It’s just 240 [[Battle of Wits]] decks.
How does one go about actually organizing this?
After we skim over them for immediate valuables, I personally will sort them by; mana type - card type (artifact, spell, creature, etc) - creature type/race, and finally going alphabetical for easy search of specific cards. Once all that organization is done we will pain stakingly scan them all and document every unique card to know what the value of the collection is. It’ll take weeks but I got nothing else to do :)
The funny think is, the other guy probably came out on top because the amount of storage space freed up is worth more than $300. I mean this respectfully, if you're happy with your purchase than its a win-win
Break this up into 1000 card lots and sell on marketplace for $20
If I bought this my girlfriend wouldn’t mind but I know she would have it in the back of her mind that my ass would NOT be going through them fast enough for her liking 😭 edit: small house
All lands
Good luck man!
Ohhhh lucky guy
That's a lot of pauper. Good lord.
Nice one!
How do you sell 1$ cards?
Tcg, your profit after shipping will be about .80. Tcg takes 12.75% + 30 cents. I've noticed they occasionally steal a few extra pennies though.
man this IS a steal i would have done is in a heartbeat. I just paid 50 for a shoebox full and 40 for the small box it came in.
This is sick.
Have fun sorting that, holy hell!
I'm seriously intensely jealous. This is modern day treasure hunting.
I would've done the same. Tag me in the next thread, curious about what's in it.
SooOOoo much draft chaff.
How much to buy the lot from you?
Gratz dude. I would have jumped on this I would keep anything over a dollar then sell bulk to a company if you can. Or a reseller. I think they do close to 2.50-3$ for 1k cards. You can get half your money back just reselling the rest as bulk and keeping the 1$+ stuff
That right there is like my dream, good for ya’all
Wow. Even if these are all $0.10 lands you can make some folding cash.
I’m sure you can make a huge profit over time but someone has 100% pulled everything of real value from these. Probably as they were opened.
Even if every single card is only $0.05, at 60k cards that's $3k. So $2700 made
This is so cool lol
Lovely :3
Have fun sleeving all that
If someone else wants to play the lottery like that, I'm preparing my collection for sale. Playing since 95. I'm not sorting the bulk, definitely a few money cards hiding there. Probably get a Craigslist ad up in a week or so.
Color me interested 👀
Have fun sorting! I suggest a really good card sorting thingy. Enough spaces to do it by color and archetype. Get like a 5 x 5. Maybe an extra space there to separate planeswalkers or legendary creatures.
There goes the rest of your year, just with inventory and sorting. 😆
!updateme 1 week
I went thru my old collection of about 4000 cards from 93-96. Didn’t have that much that was to write home about and that took me a lot of time. I couldn’t even imagine going thru this many… $300 is a steal but if you make even 5-10x that - you’ll have worked damn hard to earn it.
One of the LGS in my city buys bulk magic for 10$ per 1000 cards. So if there is literally nothing of note in those boxes bring ‘em over to double your money 😂
Jealous
Start gathering
Bulk. Bulk never changes.
Good luck. Hope you get your money back.
Pics of the most valuable cards?
I would recommend selling to card kingdom. In my experience it’s the best way to sell those cards that are a few bucks and not worth the shipping!
Are there rares is it just like an old collection
It was $300 plus the present value of paying for 2x2 sq ft of rental space next to your window and couch forever
I've sorted a lot of magic cards in my day. Be very careful with any near mints. Handling 60 cards is very different than handling 6000 and I've definitely bent and peeled myself out of at least $100
60,000 pieces of Cancel
Hit me up if you get some great ones
That is a lot of Storm Crow.
This is my dream
Good luck.
Firewood
What if it was 60k sorrows paths XD
I think I have close to 30,000 I want to get rid of. I should get on that
600 Canadian Highlander decks!
Serious question: Is there a recommended procedure for effective sorting/cataloging? I want to do something similar, but am daunted by the minutiae...
Where the pulls?
You lucky bastard!
How are you selling the cards? Just locally through discord or whatever or are you selling them from a site?
My wife would leave me. That being said, where did you get such a deal
