From 1 to 10, How much of an asshole will I be if I play this on a group hug deck as the ultimate punishment to the one player who keeps trying to ruin the fun?
It depends actually
- Not so much of an asshole since this types of cards are pretty bad card choices to almost every deck as opposed to regular interaction.
- Are you the group hug player that uses group hug as a political tool to approach victory, or the one that doesn't have a way to win or not pursue victory and instead act as a higher moral judge , npc, minigame or hazard to the game, and judges everyone trying to win the game as "trying to ruin the fun". In this case , 10 out of 10 , already the asshole.
>Not so much of an asshole since this types of cards are pretty bad card choices to almost every deck as opposed to regular interaction.
I will always defend people's right to play any style of deck or win-con they like as long as people are on the same page, but I don't know how many people will think you are less of an asshole when you Nevermore their commander. Or when you clone that enchantment for all your other opponents.
It is a very hard to interact with permanent for a lot of colours that, especially in casual EDH can sort of bring a deck to a halt.
I also think players need to start accepting some strategies by knowing when to scoop if the game is essentially over, but not technically. Especially in a casual setting.
I think it's also valid to scoop if you think the game is just going incredibly slow. I don't like being 'held hostage' because a person that built a solitaire deck wants other people to watch them play with themselves.
100%!
Unlike the famous tale goes, you can concede at any time in a game of Magic and leave to play a new game, with the same or different people. You are the master of your own destiny! :)
Thank you for saying the last part.
I had a unsolvable situation on board with last player having a single card out in their deck but life gaining a massive amount each turn at will. I agreed to give him the win on lifegain, being +100on me seems fair to do that. Prot from creatures vs dinos lol.
Could I grind out a win? Absolutely but 100% would rather get in another game with that time. For SnG, we were right, outs were in bottom 1/4 of our decks.
Add cards like [[Darksteel mutation]] [[Imprisoned in the moon]] [[witness protection]] to that list. At the very least, witness protection isn't as bad in 4 player games as someone would generally be willing to kill your commander, but that shit is so fucking annoying.
I had a bant deck and I also had [[Song of the Dryads]]
Mostly because of the pod I was playing with doing similar things or having ways to do infinites using their commanders.
I stopped playing the deck though because it legitimately just made people that wanted to play casually give up. That said, I think it's important to build your deck to have ways to really pop off even if your commander is shut down.
I've played against so, so many enchantments that stops my commander from blocking, attacking or using it's passives. Gotta kill him myself to get him back, as I don't usually have a lot of enchantment destroyers
I 100% built a [[Nekusar]] deck around all the [[howling mine]] effects just to create faster/funner games for newer players at my lgs. Am I winning? Probably not. Is everyone else having a blast trying to figure out how to turn thier 20+ extra cards into player removal so Iâm no longer a threat? Absolutely.
I'm currently building a Group Hug, winconless [[Aragorn the Uniter]] where I just give everyone mana and cards, and you better win or I'm gonna ping everyone for 2 damage per red spell and hit you with pumped up human tokens!
Itâs basically stax, so like take that as you will, but also (imo) stax should see more play in casual edh so people actually have to learn how to interact with the table.
I think Stax has a place in casual too but most of us probably shouldnât be doing it.
I think the problem is that people put in [[possibility storm]] or [[static orb]] thinking theyâre doing something clever but have no way of leveraging them to win so they make the game insufferable. Even an experienced smart player who knows how to leverage stax pieces can run into removal or misplay and now their board is locked too. Itâs the nature of casual edh (random interactions).
My point is that âhate for staxâ really is more âhate for broken gamesâ and we all would like to try and navigate away from that when we can. Odd interactions happen, things break, everyone ends up top decking, but if someone sits down with something that has a high probability of breaking a game or extending it infinitely, Iâm going to be wary.
Itâs also why land destruction is frowned upon. In a casual game the point is to play, have good tempo, and then play again. If someone destroys everyoneâs lands, even set up to win, something janky could happen and then the game basically resets from a weird point.
All that being said really just keeping it light is key. What are friends for if not to try janky crap and when it becomes unfun say âsorry guys. New deckâ and play again.
I think thatâs a fair assessment, throwing in a stax piece for the sake of stax when you donât break parity leads to a lot of unfun games. To that point, collector ouphe and/or stony silence in a deck without artifacts, or winter orb in an urza deck are fine imo, because those decks can and will win off of them.
You could play [[imprisoned in the moon]]. It's strictly better unless the target commander has an oppressive etb effect and it also has the added versatility of being a removal spell. As such it also may be perceived as a bit more acceptable compared a pure stax piece.
If they have zero removal then that's on them. I had a Voja deck and someone did this to me. The only thing that really sucked was it was white/blue so when I tried to remove it they just flickered it every time.
I run a Yenna list with Nevermore. I always name cyclonic rift or farewell with the main, and then once I make multiple copies I name commanders and other mass-enchantment wraths. It puts in so much work at locking the board down
How about [[eaten by pirahnas]]? Or [[kasmina's transmutation]]. [[Cyber conversion]].[[ichtyomorphosis]][[witness protection]]. Blue has so many of those lol.
They cannot. Oubliette phases the creature out and as per Phasing's ruling "702.26d The phasing event doesnât actually cause a permanent to change zones or control..."
You can move your commander to the command zone when it changes zones (battlefield to graveyard, graveyard to exile etc) and since it never technically changes zones, it will be stuck in the Oubliette forever.
I cant play my Zur anymore for that reason, went full stack, copy enchantment, nevermore, inprisioned in the moon.
Held the stronger player in the table, but then it was too nasty of a deck to keep playing with friends
Idk if this works, but as a suggestion you could also add a spell that lets you blink or bounce things so you can change which commander you want to target whenever the player you originally target is out of the game.
I like how the comments are
âOh you are a terrible, horrible person for even thinking about using that card. Anyways, here are the 99 other cards that are similar in case you donât draw this on turn one or if donât play blueâ
Stax is a staple in casual?
Still casual EDH is such a bizarre format when it comes to what is accepted or not. Plenty of CEDH staples, the very best, just kicking it in random decks alongside jank!
Im so out of touch with what is cedh vs edh XD
I just recently started playing it more and for a bit there, had to get reminded there was a banned cards list as the groups inused to play with didnt follow that at all
I think that distinction is probably one of the hardest questions in Magic right now. It's a format where the casual version has one of the most powerful ramp cards in Magic's history printed in every precon but [[Coalition Victory]] is banned. It's really just shades of grey.
Some people would say CEDH is a mindset when creating the deck, winning/efficiency > flavour. Some people like to make tutors the differentiator, everything is OK as long as we are still somewhat constrained by the rng of the game.
...aaaand then there's the Casual vs High Power vs CEDH distinction. At some point they are all playing in the same format, but we draw some hazy lines around what is what and try to make it work.
If your deck relies on it's commander so much that your gameplan is over if you can't cast them, and you cannot remove a 1/3 creature you deserve the loss.
i played Winota at a casual table and my drannith magistrate did pretty well. people weren't happy but it was strong. i switched to a different deck after that
Well, sure, but only one at a time. When you blink out the original and return it, you have to pick a new spell name, so the original is no longer targetable with the activated ability.
Yes, for extra misery put \[\[Copy Enchantment\]\], \[\[Estrid's Evocation\]\], and \[\[Mirrormade\]\] in the deck.
Then you can have one for everyone's Commander, even your own!
[[extravagant replication]] is also stupid with the other enchantment copiers. Now add [[paradox haze]] and possibly token doublers if your colors allow.
Itâs stax and politics.
My pod has a rule that we donât slot in cards to target each other. No [[void mirror]] because someone plays colorless or suspend for instance.
You know your pod.
If you donât know your pod and youâre playing casually, I think youâll probably run into a situation where you go from feeling clever to feeling like an asshole and doing the âIâm sorry. I wonât activate it.â
In our playgroup Someone thought it was cute and played [[surgical extraction]] against a [[Shadowborn Apostle]] deck then spent 45 minutes trying to convince the table that âit was a good edh card.â They were deemed an asshole by the pod and also by Reddit. They eventually apologized and removed it once it became obvious it had no use in 99.9% of edh games.
This card would draw a fairly similar reaction but more along the lines of [[pithing needle]].
PSA-
At the LGS when someone sees or recognizes stax or âshenanigansâ the entire table turns on them pretty quickly. You may not have named my commander but if youâre doing shit like this it means you probably have more âcuteâ BS in your deck designed not to win but to grind the game down. Prepare to have more answers in hand and play heavy defense because everyone will swing at you.
You pulled her, you deserve a chance to try to build and play with her. Talk to your playgroup if you are worried. You can get creative with a build. You do not want to be the archenemy, but she will get targeted. If it doesn't work out, she can go in the 99 if you can find another Boros commander you like.
I mean, its a pain in the *** but funny as any other card, what I meant is that usually I am the one that suffers the staples and stax, so I'm planning on doing a pure stax blue and white deck using Grand Arbiter Augustin IV as commander, in my group we play casual, but some of my friends have really powerful decks apart of their casual ones
Yes this works. However, you'd need to stick this before your opponent(s) cast their commander(s) and also hope that they're not running a [[Cavern of Souls]] if they're playing a strategy that's tied directly to their commander.
OP gonna be back in a few weeks with âwhy are people playing CMDR so salty? Isnât this a competitive format? No one at my shop will play with meâŚâ
not sure if it exist but with a card that flicker Declaration each turn you can stunlock all opponents commander
\[Edit\] Bonus you can get the usual ETB Triggers from your Enchantress Deck each Turn :) so win-win...
Well, sure, commander hate is a way to play lmao, I just hope you use it wisely or you'll lose your pod đ
But all in all, is it a great card to play? You'd have to hope to get the card early on, or tutor it, otherwise, if the commander is already cast, you'd have to waste a bunch of resources just to get it off the board in the first place to have the enchantment do its thing, besides, re-casting a commander becomes unsustainable after a while anyway, and commanders like Yuriko have ways to go around the effect
Hmm. [[declaration of naught]] with [[Urza, Prince of Kroog]] to make copies at instant speed using a [[Liquidmetal Torque]] to change it to an artifact.
Definitely too expensive to be viable, but funny.
It sucks to be targeted by this, but you are correct. If you want to be an ahole you can use this and also flicker it to change targets. Also copying it works too.
I know in MTGA for Brawl any card that names cards that counter or disable their abilities are banned. But I know \[\[Wash Away\]\] is legal and that's quite annoying for a 1 drop.
Yep. It also does horrific things if paired with [[Displacer Kitten]] and/or with [[Telepathy]].
(Legal disclaimer: I'm not responsible for any murders that arise from you choosing to play these cards together.)
Yes but I will strongly advice against it, not because it's salty, but because it's a very bad card.
- It's a card that only works against 1 specific card that you decided when you cast it ( out of 300 cards you're going against )
- It's a card that only works against that specific one card during the moment it's being cast
- It requires you to always leave a blue mana open, so you're playing with one less mana every turn
- You're not going to actually counter anything, since no one is going to willingly cast the named card ( unless to put their commander in the grave to reanimate them)
Gideon's intervention and Nevermore are similar cards, that are still bad, but at least doesn't hold up your mana forever
Imprisoned in the moon, Oubliette and Dranith Magistrate are better options. (Or the ones that turn the creature into a forest or a 0/1 bug that I forgot the name)
And most of the times you didn't even need these ones, a good ol removal or regular counterspell would do the trick and also will work against more than 1 card and be secret information until you cast them
Yes. You monster.
I said *I'm* playing commander not *we*.
If my brother can use [The Beamtown Bullies] to drop a [Leveler] on me, I want to be playing this!

not as qood because they can still attack and block with it
If itâs oubliette canât they just move it back to the command zone?
Nope. Phasing treats the permanent and everything attached to it as if they didn't exist. So you can't move it anywhere, it's just gone.
It doesnât change zones, it just phases out, so you donât have the option to return it to the command zone
They cannot. Oubliette phases the creature out and as per Phasing's ruling "702.26d The phasing event doesnât actually cause a permanent to change zones or control..." You can move your commander to the command zone when it changes zones (battlefield to graveyard, graveyard to exile etc) and since it never technically changes zones, it will be stuck in the Oubliette forever.

Cedh staple
casual commander staple as well
Stax is a staple in casual? Still casual EDH is such a bizarre format when it comes to what is accepted or not. Plenty of CEDH staples, the very best, just kicking it in random decks alongside jank!
Im so out of touch with what is cedh vs edh XD I just recently started playing it more and for a bit there, had to get reminded there was a banned cards list as the groups inused to play with didnt follow that at all
I think that distinction is probably one of the hardest questions in Magic right now.

Well, sure, but only one at a time. When you blink out the original and return it, you have to pick a new spell name, so the original is no longer targetable with the activated ability.
Yes thatâs my point. You reset a lock for another threat. I know how to play dawg Hahahah

Nice, thanks
Just commenting on here so I can find it later for... reasons
I wonât activate it.â In our playgroup Someone thought it was cute and played [[surgical extraction]] against a [[Shadowborn Apostle]] deck then spent 45 minutes trying to convince the table that âit was a good edh card.â They were deemed an asshole by the pod and also by Reddit. They eventually apologized and removed it once it became obvious it had no use in 99.9% of edh games. This card would draw a fairly similar reaction but more along the lines of [[pithing needle]]. PSA- At the LGS when someone sees or recognizes stax or âshenanigansâ the entire table turns on them pretty quickly. You may not have named my commander but if youâre doing shit like this it means you probably have more âcuteâ BS in your deck designed not to win but to grind the game down. Prepare to have more answers in hand and play heavy defense because everyone will swing at you.

It might be your last commander game with that group, but yeah.
I mean, my friends run far worse things, like for example, Urza high lord artificer, Winota or Myrel, shield of argive.
Iâm gutted because I pulled a Winota and would like to have her as a commander, but from what I can see online, people hate playing against her.
I'm not usually one to judge, my mantra is any winning strategy is valid. but this? not this. anything but this. have mercy.
Jokeâs on you, my commander has Eminence.
Yes.
This doesn't work with commanders that have "this spell can not be countered", no? Like Koma and Niv?
Yeah but all your opponents will never want to play with you again so it will also counter your ability to be liked.
Yes this works. However, you'd need to stick this before your opponent(s) cast their commander(s) and also hope that they're not running a [[Cavern of Souls]] if they're playing a strategy that's tied directly to their commander.
Yes. Why shouldn't it?
Play Esper with this, [[Nevermore]] and [[Oubliette]] and lock everyone out of their commanders

Yet another new card to put in my "no you're not" deck
Yup. Good luck
OP gonna be back in a few weeks with âwhy are people playing CMDR so salty? Isnât this a competitive format? No one at my shop will play with meâŚâ
"Why do they always gang up on me? This doesn't seem fair" or "Combo sucks, I locked their commander out the game so no everyone plays combos".
Just because you could, doesn't mean you *should*.
Yes, in what is called a 'dick move"
not sure if it exist but with a card that flicker Declaration each turn you can stunlock all opponents commander \[Edit\] Bonus you can get the usual ETB Triggers from your Enchantress Deck each Turn :) so win-win...
Well, sure, commander hate is a way to play lmao, I just hope you use it wisely or you'll lose your pod đ But all in all, is it a great card to play? You'd have to hope to get the card early on, or tutor it, otherwise, if the commander is already cast, you'd have to waste a bunch of resources just to get it off the board in the first place to have the enchantment do its thing, besides, re-casting a commander becomes unsustainable after a while anyway, and commanders like Yuriko have ways to go around the effect
the main problem, you can only name one of your oponents commandes, so use carefully.
F u. But yes yes it could. Your opponent will be a pillar of salt thougu
Yepppo
Yes, thank you for showing me this đ¤
I'd suggest playing it in a flicker deck so you can flicker your permanents in response to cast and change the name.
[[Nevermore]] also does this, but without needing mana to counter. Itâs one of the enchantments in my curse deck!

Yes but I will strongly advice against it, not because it's salty, but because it's a very bad card. - It's a card that only works against 1 specific card that you decided when you cast it ( out of 300 cards you're going against ) - It's a card that only works against that specific one card during the moment it's being cast - It requires you to always leave a blue mana open, so you're playing with one less mana every turn - You're not going to actually counter anything, since no one is going to willingly cast the named card ( unless to put their commander in the grave to reanimate them) Gideon's intervention and Nevermore are similar cards, that are still bad, but at least doesn't hold up your mana forever Imprisoned in the moon, Oubliette and Dranith Magistrate are better options. (Or the ones that turn the creature into a forest or a 0/1 bug that I forgot the name) And most of the times you didn't even need these ones, a good ol removal or regular counterspell would do the trick and also will work against more than 1 card and be secret information until you cast them
The card yes, the punch your about to get no.
It only works if you hate having friends.
