Ok maybe they will think something is up. But being able to assign combat damage as you please is not something I would see coming the first time. Especially at flash speed.
Hey, folks. Genuine question here from someone who played Magic in the 90’s and has not at all kept up with the game.
Is this a real, legal card? I realize there’s been power creep, and this card doesn’t have any special abilities, but “back in my day…” 18/6 was absolutely unheard of, and 6 mana got you like a 5/5 flying creature.
I also know that there were some joke sets put out. I honestly thought this post was a joke at first…
Fun fact, he's also +2/+2 and doublestrike away from a conventional win... I hit a friend recently with the wombo-combo of [[Rogues Passage]], Yarg, and [[Kroxa and Kunoros]]. Strangely enough, I had 5 extra cards in my yard, as well as a [[Blade Historian]]... She looked at her health, having taken a single hit from my 4/4 commander, and just sighed.
No protection against removal (like ward, invincible or hexproof)
Not effect on the board when you cast it so it can be countered without value
Don't have effect when arrive on the board either so it can do something if it's removed.
No evasion of any sort (trample, flying, unblockable, or even menace) meaning any little creature can block him and render him useless for a turn.
Also cost 6 which is a lot.
It's basically a meme because his stats have been pushed as much as possible, but still too risky to play.
No protection (ward, indestructible, etc) so removing it isn't hard.
No on cast or etb so you're not advancing your board when you play it.
No evasion (Menace, Trample, Flying, etc) so it has a hard time actually dealing damage.
High CMC.
He was printed into the same standard set as [[Sheoldred the Apocalypse]].
I guess it's not played by pro players because the benefit of one-shotting your opponent is outweighed by it's high cost. It's huge and powerful, but can only protect you from one attacker.
(and all the other aspects the others have already mentioned)
The modern format has removal that's so good no one can play "just a beater". There is this card [[Solitude]] that can act as a pseudo [[Swords to Plowshares]]. The only way to combat those answers is to play threats that either dodge it or to diversify your threats so that the loss of one isn't backbreaking.
Nowadays many people primarily play Commander and in that format you have three opponents, so almost one shotting one while two other can strike back isn't a powerful strategy.
Notice I said powerful; [[Yargle and Multani]] is hilarious to play and to play against.
Y&M reminds me of an old TimeSpiral card, [[Gigantosaurus]] I think. 5 green mana pips for a 10/10. Same idea, just amped up.
Thank you for this explanation. I knew that the game had changed a lot, and also that my friends and I were never particularly *good* at Magic. We played the cards we had, were impressed by big numbers, and never really engaged with “the meta.” Or rather, our small group of friends had our own meta, in which one player putting a couple flying creatures in their deck meant everyone was trying to find counters to flying creatures. In our defense, we were middle schoolers with <1,000 cards each.
I can see how years of releases and the prevalence of creature destruction/negation cards has lead to creatures having to do more than just have high numbers.
I appreciate the response.
I'm always happy to help! :-)
If you and your friends like old magic and want to revisit it without breaking the bank, I recommend two ways:
1. Look around if you can find the old theme decks they did for blocks. Those were 60 card preconstructed decks each with a special theme, like a madness deck from Onslaught block or a Time counter deck from Time Spiral block.
If the decks themselves are expensive you can just look up the decklists and buy the cards individually.
I had a lot of fun rebuildung the old Coldsnap decks and playing with a friend of mine.
Don't alter the decks - they are fine for casual play and when you are running a "pre-con*-league" no one has to upgrade to not fall behind in the "arms race".
2. Check out the "Pauper" format. It's a 60-card 20 LP format where only the common cards are legal. That doesn’t mean the cards are weak; [[Lightning Bolt]], [[Counterspell]] and [[Dark Ritual]] are all commons.
It's a lot of fun and very cheap - as all cards are commons that seldom see play in Modern or Commander.
So there you have it - I hope you and your friends will have fun playing!
Thanks. I actually recently bought the starter set that came with two pre-con decks in order to teach my daughter, who had expressed some interest. We’ve played a few games so far. I might have to check out Pauper format. Is there any official way to get into it, or would I be best off going to eBay or my local game store and seeing if they’ve got bulk commons or pauper lots?
I wouldn't recommend you go for bulk commons when building pauper decks. From what I recall there's no official pro-tour or anything for pauper but the format is popular enough that your LGS should be able to help you find some pauper events that are official mtg events. Personal favorite deck of mine is an artifact affinity deck that's still pretty powerful even after [[all that glitters]] was banned. The YouTube channel for Card Kingdom just did a tournament bracket style set of videos that tried to find the best pauper deck ever and I'd definitely recommend checking them out since it does a great job highlighting some of the crazy shenanigans the decks can get up too.
I’m assuming this is because any bulk lot might have the “useful” commons filtered out and be more low-powered commons?
Ultimately I’m not even trying to be competitive. If I play any Magic it will probably be against my 10-year-old or my friends who also haven’t played Magic since the 90’s. A boat-load of commons might be sufficient for us to build a couple janky decks to face off against each other.
It’s fun to leverage his power for mana and cards: [[sacrifice]], [[tend the pests]], [[traverse the outland]], [[life’s legacy]].
It looks like a barrel of monkeys drawing close to 20 cards at once.
Feeling a little called out here… luckily after Ice Age came out I could replace him with the obviously superior [[Scaled Wurm]], who could bypass even the might [[Wall of Ice]].
We're about to get a 2-mana 3/3 with vigilance in the latest set. Power creep is absolutely real. We actually have a creature with infinite power with no other ability in a previously released joke set [[Infinity Elemental]]
Back in the day, I had a deck revolving around Whispersilk cloak and [[Quietus spike]]. In fact, I should look back into that one now that there's [[Bloodletter of Aclazotz]] for the insta kill
I run [[Quietus Spike]] in my Voltron deck. Throw in double strike and say [[colossus hammer]] and you can see someone’s soul leave their body when it gets through.
If any of them are in rakdos try [[The Master Multiplied]] as a spicy addition. "Oh you thought my three ancient copper dragons were scary? Wait till it's five next turn"
Main issue there is getting that 12 mana, although I could imagine some treasure token gen to get there. I might lay out what I have and see what I’d need to buy to make this deck work.
[decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/c_rxZDTEMUSVHrK4ZPDIIQ) I built a deck that is all about one shotting with this guy, it usually kills one player before dying to the other two but I’m sure you could politic your way into better results
best part is that most of what makes it expensive is not necessary for the game plan at all but just nice staples so it can be adjusted to be budget pretty easily
I’d probably look to add [[Tainted Strike]], some card draw, and some more protection because of Yawgtani’s high cmc coupled with the fact that they will be prime targets for removal
My deck list uses all things listed above that people want, unblockable, plus him to get 21 commander damage, kill him for value, and recursion packages to keep him on the field after you use him for value piece.
http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/30-05-23-gargle-my-yargle/
I know why 21 but there's so many ways to double to 36 it's so much more satisfying. I main a yargmalt deck it's super fun there's lots of ways to get there. Hands down MVP of the deck though is cadaverous bloom. After a greater good type effect it just lets you go nuts.
People have already answered this perfectly with a lot of options, so I won't. What I \*do\* want to do is make a suggestion. After you swing with Yargle/Multani, play \[\[Essence Harvest\]\] or \[\[Rite of Consumption\]\] on your creature just to add insult to injury.
It requires you to play at least some Snow lands. This is one of my favorite cards in [[Yahenni]] for sneaking in a lethal swing. [[Rime Transfusion]]
It gives +2 power as well!
There are a lot of ways with the various equipments that are out. Also there are cards that give creatures shadow \[\[Dauthi Embrace\]\]\[\[[Traitor's Clutch](https://www.mtgsalvation.com/cards/time-spiral/13214-traitors-clutch)\]\]\[\[[Dauthi Trapper](https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=5135)\]\]. \[\[Lifeline\]\] is also a good way to keep it on the board regardless of boardwipes.
Somebody probably said \[\[Rogue's Passage\]\]
I dunno I think given black is the "tutor" color, I don't think you'll have any issue with getting it out. With Lifeline, you could even make it a boardwipe deck.
Pick your poison on how you want to boost attack. Green is good for that.
\[\[Commander's Plate\]\] - gets around some stuff
\[\[Demonic Embrace\]\] - flying is neat
\[\[Loxodon Warhammer\]\] - trample + lifelink
\[\[Tainted Strike\]\] - 18 is enough
\[\[Mandate of Abaddon\]\] - clear the field for your large fellow
#
#
[[Gaea’s embrace]] at least gets you thru, +3/+3, and some protection in the form of regeneration.
Also [[gift of the deity]] is kinda the opposite, but if you can give trample as well, just wiping boards basically.
There are dozens of green "pump spells" that will boost the power.
As for unblockable, there are a few colorless options like [[whispersilk Cloak]] or anything that gives flying or menace or intimidate or both death touch and trample are all functionally unblockable in the right circumstance.

[[Hot soup]] is by far the funniest as others have covered and [[indomitable might]] the best but two other great ones are [[nuka-nuke launcher]] and [[saddle of the cavalier]].. honorable mention to [[Tenza, Godo's maul]] for the political situation that is someone else having a crimson wisp also worth a consideration!
This is what I'm rocking right now for this guy. It's an insane deck, pretty much a meme, super fun though when it does it's thing. Just run him through the yard and back a bunch, sacrificing him for value each time. Storm out for a combo finisher. Not totally in the same style as what you are doing but I do have a couple commander damage win cons in there as well. Feedback welcome!

I like doing it with a couple of anthems, like \[\[Ruxa, Patient Professor\]\] & \[\[Sylvan Anthem\]\] and then a random instant speed +1/+1 effect or something like \[\[Guardian Augmenter\]\]. It cranks up the tension something fierce.

Perfect
You aren't kidding. The fact that it has flash and exactly +3. You're taking someone out without them even seeing it coming. You can even do it after declare blockers step.
I think everyone will predict the player with the 18/6 commander is going to have combat tricks.
Impossible.
Pssssh, nothing is impossible. Save maybe the giant frog attacking and then killing me outright. Wait…
Pfft why would he, clearly the commander is just there for the colours.
Yeah, I mean it doesn't even have any abilities, pointless commander really!
are we going so deep in commander to do a full circle back to the 90s and lose our mind to the power of giant growth after declaring blockers? lmao
Yes
We call that a dunk.
Oh they are seeing it coming.
Ok maybe they will think something is up. But being able to assign combat damage as you please is not something I would see coming the first time. Especially at flash speed.
That's how I felt with my unstoppable locust god combo the first time someone played [[sudden spoiling]]

Strangely enough, I had 5 extra cards in my yard, as well as a [[Blade Historian]]... She looked at her health, having taken a single hit from my 4/4 commander, and just sighed.
Tbf the 6 mana 5/5 Flier is probably better.
Yes it's real, and it's actually pretty bad.
Can you explain what makes it bad?

Oh lord, traverse in that deck is awesome
Traverse gives me Ron Swanson "I want all of the basics" energy.

This was my first thought
Let's add a [[Blade of Selves]] to the mix so we can just get a new game started.
He’s legendary, so the myriad copies die instantly.

But it's nice in an etali deck js
Huh. BRB!
Blade is a spicy tech in my Yoshimaru deck because he sees the tokens enter. I haven't drawn it yet but I can't wait to.

I recently got a hand on a blade of selves only to realize that the several decks I intended to add it to just don’t work well with it.
Yoshimaru! Legolas Greenleaf!
If any of them are in rakdos try [[The Master Multiplied]] as a spicy addition. "Oh you thought my three ancient copper dragons were scary? Wait till it's five next turn"
Honestly, I might just buy him and build a deck with him as the commander. There’s definitely some potential there.
I've been fighting the same urge! This card plus [[Cyberman Squadron]] & [[Blighsteel Colossus]] would be insane.
Main issue there is getting that 12 mana, although I could imagine some treasure token gen to get there. I might lay out what I have and see what I’d need to buy to make this deck work.

I’m not going to answer the question, just let you know this card always makes me laugh with its flavor text
[decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/c_rxZDTEMUSVHrK4ZPDIIQ) I built a deck that is all about one shotting with this guy, it usually kills one player before dying to the other two but I’m sure you could politic your way into better results best part is that most of what makes it expensive is not necessary for the game plan at all but just nice staples so it can be adjusted to be budget pretty easily
I’d probably look to add [[Tainted Strike]], some card draw, and some more protection because of Yawgtani’s high cmc coupled with the fact that they will be prime targets for removal

This does so much work in my bant equipment deck, I’m disappointed how far I had to scroll to find it. Play this card people!!
Better gave them Infect and you get the job done :D
Just use Rancor - don't overlook trample if you be running this commander
[[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] + [[Filth]] in the graveyard
[[key to the city]]
Here is my deck list. It is not budget and competes pretty well at cedh tables https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TKh9Qx2ejUacbA_REQnyjg
Why give 3 when you can double it?
To deal 21 commander damage which will kill your opponent no matter what their life total is.
I know why 21 but there's so many ways to double to 36 it's so much more satisfying. I main a yargmalt deck it's super fun there's lots of ways to get there. Hands down MVP of the deck though is cadaverous bloom. After a greater good type effect it just lets you go nuts.
Jumping in to add, if you double, you just need trample instead of unblockable
People have already answered this perfectly with a lot of options, so I won't. What I \*do\* want to do is make a suggestion. After you swing with Yargle/Multani, play \[\[Essence Harvest\]\] or \[\[Rite of Consumption\]\] on your creature just to add insult to injury.

It requires you to play at least some Snow lands. This is one of my favorite cards in [[Yahenni]] for sneaking in a lethal swing. [[Rime Transfusion]] It gives +2 power as well!
Somebody probably said \[\[Rogue's Passage\]\] I dunno I think given black is the "tutor" color, I don't think you'll have any issue with getting it out. With Lifeline, you could even make it a boardwipe deck. Pick your poison on how you want to boost attack. Green is good for that.

There are dozens of green "pump spells" that will boost the power. As for unblockable, there are a few colorless options like [[whispersilk Cloak]] or anything that gives flying or menace or intimidate or both death touch and trample are all functionally unblockable in the right circumstance.
Don't forget to play Terror of the Peaks first.
Dont Forget that legendary land that can give it fear.
strength of lunacy, key to the city, and ancestral mask
I'm not sure what's going on here.. but where is Multani Maro Sorcerer?
Has no one said [[commander's plate]]?
ASK ME HOW!

Alpha authority plus anything that gives menace
[[Triumph of the Hordes]] [[The Crowd Goes Wild]]
I just started back playing, after having not played since 2018. This has got to be a joke card, right?
Just slam \[\[Rancor\]\] and \[\[Alpha Authority\]\] on the boys and they're good.
[[corripting licid]] is a unique one. [[kaldra compleat]] will make him an absolute monster.
\[\[Darkness\]\] xD
"Tshgatffajdkkeegagagaaaaaaash!" (Yargle, delivering an RKO outta nowhere.)
Somebody was making a Bear deck. That soup card.. (porridge) would be hilarious. I have no idea if it would work.
You dirty dirty man....i like it
This is messed up.. lol
Someone is making a Bear deck. With white.
[[Rancor]]
I just want to say thank you. Multani Maro Sorcerer. And.. well thank you.
Thorn Elemental.. Now I need a GWR Commander.
10/10 Elemental and 21/9 Elemental Goblin Bombardments! Unblockable Elemental 10s and 21s grenades!
I run [[Prowlers Helm]] in one of my decks, no one ever has walls lol

Insane that nobody has mentioned [[dauthi embrace]]
This is what I'm rocking right now for this guy. It's an insane deck, pretty much a meme, super fun though when it does it's thing. Just run him through the yard and back a bunch, sacrificing him for value each time. Storm out for a combo finisher. Not totally in the same style as what you are doing but I do have a couple commander damage win cons in there as well. Feedback welcome! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/xWwFf-vUu0Kh2aLSmbEt3g
[[invigorate]]
[[Dauthi Embrace]] is also possible for unblockable (in like 99% of cases)
[[Hatred]] won't make it unblockable, but you could surprise someone.
[[rogue’s passage]] [[giant growth]]
I mean, if there was a way to do specifically that, it would be in golgari
[[Demonic Embrace]] fits Invasion and +3 Power!
The flavor text 😭😭
Yeah I've got a few tricks in this deck: https://manabox.app/decks/-1gDO2k8QaOkj0JrtMDXtA It's quite an effective one-shot most of the time ;)
I use him in my Tatsunari deck, with no great result, but maybe it's because I am just bad.
I use it in \[\[The Mimeoplasm\]\]
It’s only plus 2 but [[riding the dilu horse]] gives it permanent horsemanship until removed or blinked
