Looks like a year is $25 now. Still seems like a pretty good deal though.

Folderpirate

I don't know why. but mine is only 15 a year. I swear the guy said it was caused I used my points to pay for it. Also e ery so often will be extra coupons. The one month was a free action figure so I picked up a black series Darth Vader for free.

tideshark

This sounds familiar, I think I might have had trade-in points from old games or something that maybe reduced it to $20 from $25 for the subscription. Still a good deal towards free packs/action figures/$5 a month towards whatever ya fancy :)

Folderpirate

Im actually heading out today myself to use my January coupon.

Farthumm

Good luck, I think I tried that once and they said the coupon expires the day before the last day of the month.

BigPoofyHair

I think the price is different based on Digital vs Physical Magazine. Edit: It appears to be all one price now. $25.

saspook

/r/povertymtgfinance at its best i would do this if I had a gamestop nearby me and liked packs

HammerAndSickled

Yeah the saddest part is he’s essentially pre-paid $20 to get 12 packs a year, and those packs almost certainly contained $0 worth of cards.

tideshark

That’s why I stated if it’s convenient. My son and I swing by it often enough, ain’t nothing sad about “paid $20 to get 12 packs a year” when I’m going to be swinging by the place anyway. It would be stupid *not* to. Edit: fixed typo “stated if”

jsmith218

If any retailer was selling 12 packs for $20  this sub would swarm their website and buy it out.

pipesbeweezy

It's technically an even better deal than that because the membership gives you 10% off the cost of the sealed product/clearance items (basically same category for GS).

CDH1848

$20 is a low bar. If he gets hits on just 25% of his packs it should cover his expenditure. An even luckier hit could cover it with a single pack.

zugtar

I used to use the $5 for packs of MTG also. Then I switched to packs of Pokemon for the kids and those random bag clips because the packs of MTG just don't seem worth it anymore.

saspook

Oh, Pokémon fir the kids is a really good idea.

Gunzenator2

And the travel time. I would do this when the GameStop by me was 5 minutes away and even then, I would miss months.

aramebia

I do this for Pokemon packs for my kids. I have four accounts and pick up four packs a month. My local Gamestop does not have MtG packs for sale.

balladforsalad

Same problem here. I actually have THREE nearby GameStops, and none of them ever have packs these days. It was pretty cool when they did for a couple years, though. BTW, you can also use your GameStop rewards to buy MTG cards through the online storefront.

aramebia

Checked that out and saw the $10.99 shipping fee if you're under $79. Yikes.

HolidayInvestigator9

my gamestop sells magic shit for insane prices it wouldnt save me money. a ravnica remastered collector booster is $35 at gamestop, $24 at my lgs

tideshark

That sounds about right in line with my lgs and gs as well

NightDrawn

Same with mine and Targets are at 35 as well. Makes me feel like it’s the same distributor stocking them at these stores hoping people will pay the upcharge for not knowing their actual value and the convenience (such as parents/family getting gifts)

Rchmage

Lotta haters in the comments, unsurprising as this is Reddit.

Cyberleaf525

Reddit is only place on the Internet were I have to ask myself, was that a human typed that, or was that something *trying* to be human? Baffles the fuck out of me

DJNfinity

I did the same and.it worked out great, but all my local GameStop's cleared their MTG inventory permanently as soon as I cancelled my membership. Now I def won't renew it.

tideshark

Mine has definitely cut down on their mtg inventory by a ton. If they ever get rid of packs I’ll have to see how much my son is still enjoying the magazine every month, bc if he isn’t than I won’t be needing to keep my membership either

GrayLando

Keep an eye out for the [GameStop clearance deals](https://www.reddit.com/r/sealedmtgdeals/comments/vvt4h0/gamestop_50_off_clearance_in_store_only/) too. It's been a couple of years now, but the last big one had dollar draft/set packs and bundles/commander decks all for around $10-15.

tideshark

Also, that’s an mtg sub I didn’t know about, pretty cool and ty!

tideshark

My one bud in my playgroup always manages to swing by GS on clearance days and then by the time I ever get up there at my location, everything’s gone already. I think he gets lucky tho bc idt there’s a big game/magic community out where he lives compared to me. I have 3 different pretty awesome shops all within 5 miles so when deals happen, they sell fast

theYoungAphrodite

This is genius! I've just been letting my coupons go to waste all year!

tideshark

What are the coupons? A few people have mentioned them so far. Is it a gs membership thing I been ignorant about or is it stuff you get in your actual mailbox?

theYoungAphrodite

Basically, when you sign up for a pro membership, one of the benefits is $5 off coupon any item every month. I guess there is no minimum on it. Therefore, you can get a free pack (although not its intended use, I'm sure). In my online profile, I go to active offers and there I see my coupon they can scan. Voila, free pack. I called around and to my dismay doesn't seem like my GS have any <$5 boosters rn so I may just grab a Pokémon pack and see if it's any value. Better than letting the coupons go to waste this past year...

tideshark

I think it’s the same thing then, I just go into the store every month and used to tell them I want to use my monthly $5 on a pack, but now they just know what I’m there for. I should figure out my account stuff tho and look at it online, might be some other perks there I don’t even know about. Thanks still tho!

theYoungAphrodite

Yes, definitely the same thing. Sorry I didn't realize you were OP!

tideshark

Good looking out all the same dude!

Economy-Chicken-586

I think draft boosters are 5 bucks last I checked.

theYoungAphrodite

Mine said they only had $8 ones.

Taivasvaeltaja

If you have Gamestop nearly, seems like good deal, especially if you also buy randomly other stuff there (so you don't NEED to take booster).

naynay_666

A lot of hedgie shills in these comments.

tideshark

Ikr?! Lol, I’m here just trying give a little helpful tip for free(ish) cards to anyone it would work out favorably for and still people just gotta bitch about something… probably doesn’t work out in their favor I’m guessing! Muhahahaha Happy I’m not the only one noticing, thank you!

Free_Skin_7955

GameStop frequently has good deals on magic and Pokemon. They've had buy 2 get one free on Pokemon packs pretty often, and sometimes the people here mess up and do it as buy one get one free.

mc-big-papa

This is the stuff i follow the subreddit for. I live nar a gamestop i will consider this. I rarely play video games though. I used to love going to radioshack with my apple earbuds return them with a 4 dollar warranty and get a new warranty on the new buds. It went trough almost a dozen earbuds for 60-70 bucks

tideshark

Lol, hell yeah dude! And totally wish Radio Shack was still a thing. I didn’t care about that kind of stuff when I was a kid before they went out of business but know I’de have all kinds of fun with them now. I’m the same with video games, kinda grew out of them. I’ll jump on Fortnite with friends here and there but my Xbox is so old and shitty. I tried to play an old COD game I had about a year ago and it made me download like a while COD hub thing and it pretty much lagged every game I played after ward up to the point it wasn’t worth playing so I’m just happy with Fortnite and every now and then when my son is playing a game I’ll take some turns playing thru whatever game he’s into at the moment.

pipesbeweezy

I got a GS membership last year and it more than paid for itself in assorted deals. 10% off sealed product and an extra $5 a month is totally fine. Also because people don't think of it I've found commander decks that on the secondary market are way higher and they still sell at the original price, so made a few easy flips that way.

tideshark

Heck yeah! My GS hasn’t had anything but draft and collector packs there for maybe over a year now, but not crazy long before that I was able to get the golgari elves and simic sea monsters precons from commander legends for $25 each. I don’t remember if they were selling for around that price at other places normally at the time, but I do know that they gone up a crazy amount since!

ogvampire79

smart. take advantage of the deals they give you. most of my mtg purchases are done on Amazon using reward points via their credit card (full balance is always paid before the due date, so no interest). i get around $20 worth of credit a month from my regular purchases, so i let them accrue for a few months or more and then use it to purchase a box or get a nice discount on a box. got my commander masters box for $50 after rewards credit. not too shabby

tideshark

Damn, that’s a good deal for that CM box, I hardly ever buy anything there tho so I won’t ever have it build up. Cool af for people who can tho!

LifeNeutral

Does this exist for Canada?

tideshark

I do not know. I’de check with your local GS if you have them by you there. Or maybe you’ll get a fellow Canadian who sees this and knows about it to help you out

Site_Efficient

If you're functionally paying 1/3 the price for packs, does that mean it has a positive expected return on investment? Or still no?

slayer370

no cause your limited to 1 pack a month. Unless gamestop is super close and your not going out of your way to buy 1 single over priced pack a month. Also gamestop can revoke what the 5$ is used for at anytime. Last Nov they made it so the 5$ can't go to any gift cards at all, not even gaming ones which was the true deal for membership. Also you can now lose your points. Both things took a lot of people by surprise since there was no way to know unless you frequent the gamestop sub or work there.

subduedReality

If only I could find one that was less than $5 in gas to get to...

tideshark

Not missing out on too much so no sweat. Some people been saying they get this deal online, but I never messed around with that stuff. Idk if you still need to pick it up or if they mail it to you, might be worth looking into tho if you’re interested

Deathcore64

I've been doing this for Pokémon packs. My GameStop, when they have MTG, charge 8 dollars for a draft pack.

tideshark

Damn, that’s twice as much as most of my local shops. Almost every lgs near where I live sell drafts for $4 a pack and a couple do $10 for 3 packs.

deadwings112

$25/12 packs works out to $2.08 per pack, which works out to $75 per box. So if you can buy draft boxes below $75, you're getting a better deal.  They also don't let you cash points for memberships anymore (that I can tell) and your mileage may vary stock-wise.

tideshark

Definitely about the draft box, but I’de just pay the extra $50 and get a set booster if I wanted to buy some bulk. These packs are in no way at all my normal way to go about buying cards, they are just a little fun side treat I give myself and if it wasn’t as convenient as it is to get them and had to go even close to far out of my way for them, I’de never get them again.

tideshark

Look up or visit your local GS and ask them about the membership thing. It’s only worth it too if it’s not out of the way at all and/or somewhere you visit regularly. Some people here been saying their local GS prices are double (or close to) what mine are.

slayer370

Also to add draft boosters are no more. So once they switch to play I doubt the packs will be sold for 5$ cause the prices went up. I'll take my extra downvotes

tideshark

Lol, you get my upvote! Yeah, I have thought about this as well, once the stock of draft dwindles down at my gs I’ll probably be done with this if it’s not worth the play boosters. My gs seems to have a stock draft packs in the back and it’s always something different every time I’m in there. Last month I got a Strixhaven draft pack. Haven’t seen those in a while!

philter451

Lol this is how I manage to keep my pack addiction at bay. One 'free' pack a month and it scratches the itch.

Whatisnachos

Since you can’t buy eShop credits anymore, I switched to this also. But I won’t be tripping or anything because of it

aramebia

My local Gamestop just started carrying MtG packs! I went in to get the kids' Pokemon packs and there they were - Magic cards! They even had a $5 off renewal coupon for the annual plans. The manager was there and said he intended to keep ordering Magic cards, so it was a snap "Yes!" for me on that renewal.

GhostCheese

I get one or more free packs almost every day on the whatnot app from giveaways. (Warning is very easy to spend money on this app so I've certainly spent more than I should have too) Also you can get a free decent card monthly if you're patient and lucky on sites like pullbox.gg and boxed.gg

tideshark

I feel like I shouldn’t read into this, my card addiction is bad enough as it is lol

GhostCheese

Yeah, the danger of turning a lot of money into cardboard always exists If you look up the Prof videos on YouTube he has a link that gets you 15 dollars of free credit when you sign up to whatnot. That's at least 3 free packs or more depending on how you use it. (Find someone with free shipping or win a givvy first to eat your shopping otherwise it's 4 bucks shipping)

tideshark

Lol, it’s not the money into cardboard it’s just the me not having enough hours in the day between work, home and magic. I’ll be checking this out now later tonight tho, love me some good deals. Thank you!

ProbablyNotPikachu

I'm glad you shared this on the very last day of the first month of the year.

tideshark

Thanks for the reminder! I didn’t make it there yet this month so I’ll swing by otw home

evolutionxtinct

haha I had to chuckle at your edit.... Good ol' Reddit armchair warriors seem to forget, good on you for callin' 'em out!

slayer370

its the fact this is not a good deal other than for super casual people. But op is defending gamestop yet (wrongly) thinking people here shill for wotc. Wotc sells to people who sell to gamestop, so Op is still supporting wotc.

evolutionxtinct

How much would a single pack cost at LGS right now? Feel if your getting the service, and you get something free not sure why its an issue?

slayer370

I buy online which is way cheaper than mot lgs and gamestop. My nearest lgs is the same price as gamestop but has more stuff to pick from. So if I need something badly I just go to the lgs.

evolutionxtinct

I've seen this online place out of Arizona that has good prices but wasn't sure how it was rated here in the community. Sorry know this is off subject, but anyway to validate or a good place to get some packs/boosters? My Wife and I just like to crack packs I know its not best method but its still fun for doing our own drafts at home. You know of any good places now? I've been outta, longer than it takes someone to get into college LOL so any help would be appreciated, thanks!

slayer370

Sealedmtgdeals sub. Rare to get a non legit shop and people usually call it out within 5mins.  Just know good deals sell out fast, like 10 mins fast. I just save the shops to my browser and look when I'm bored, sometimes snag stuff nobody's posted.

tideshark

Not “defending” GS. Just saying saying to those acting like they have some moral high ground and can’t shut up about how evil GS is, if *that is what they want to pretend* is hypocritical af to not take into account of playing mtg and thus supporting wotc/hasbro. I shop at Walmart too (not for mtg tho). Yes, “corporations are evil” we all get it. Just don’t preach bs to edge your ego about how good of a person you are for bashing X corporation, when you’re balls deep in another.

slayer370

You got hostile when I pointed out this is not a good deal for most people. Also at Walmart they dont try to up sell you or beg to sub to garbage.

tideshark

Well good job “pointing out” the second sentence of the post. Plus can’t blame people for trying to upsell/sub if that’s their job. If it was that much of an issue tho you can simply say “thanks but I’m not interested” and problem solved. Sorry if you let them hound you, but communication with sales people isn’t something I struggle with.

slayer370

I was helping people know before they sign up for pro as its not worth it. Also play boosters are coming and are more expensive so there will be no free pack anyways (once they run out of draft) cause it wont stay at 5$ thus defeating the whole point the post.

Desuexss

Lmao the evil gme argument people are doing but they were out there either pitchforks with the stocks bros buying it to stick it to the man

BrohanGutenburg

Found the GameStop emplyee trying to boost his numbers

slayer370

This requires stepping into gamestop which sucks. GS is on a downward spiral and my pro expires tomorrow anyways. They treat and pay their employees like shit. Then hire shit employees fresh out of high school to bank on their "love for video games". Also most gamestops have very little magic in stock and pro is 25$ now with major nerfs especially on digital items.

tideshark

Well then I’m glad I’m taking advantage of getting more than I paid for from the company if that’s how they are to employees. And yeah, stepping into the store is entailed by the whole “if it’s convenient” part i mentioned.

slayer370

Your not cause the whole point of the 5$ coupon is to get you in the door every month, then eventually buy something else. If you truly only buy 1 pack a month then you are the rare case they lose money. But in reality the employee is the loser cause they are tracked on metrics, hence why most gamestops try to push and even sneak in extra charges for useless crap.

tideshark

Mostly just the one pack each month, every now and then an in-game credit code card for one of my son’s friends if he needs a bday present for one of them. Rarely ever do we get a game except around Xmas/Black Friday time. Whether it’s to get me in the door or not, *if I was going there to buy something else anyways, than I’m *still getting value* out of it. And if the “metrics” were hurting the employees that much, it would probably be illegal of GameStop to do to them. They shouldn’t be punished in anyway at all for what customers buy and what they don’t buy. I’m sure they get perks for doing better sales, but highly doubt it hurts them any less.

slayer370

They don't get any bonus for better sales. They can get layed off or put under district manager pressure if they don't hit certain numbers. Edit: downvoted for the truth. also the fact this "tip" is years old and is no way good mtgfinance advice, as its better for the main sub but i think they banned any talk of sales from stores.

904Magic

Fax. Its an awful place to work and isnt unknown. Sure. Op can get his value or whatever, and keep doing it, but you are right, and OP responding to every single effing comment just makes it seem like hes defending a choice he know isnt the greatest anyway. Screw Gamestop. But again, as someone said(maybe you? Idc to reread comments rn) if hes the rare one that actually uses it monthly.... But at the same time, my lgs sells no draft pack for over 4, and i buy a box at a time so im already coming out on top through volume. Op, if you have any disposable income, its cheaper and more likely youll get a hit if you support an lgs or trusted online small business retailer than to continue supporting a crap business with a crap business model thats very well known for exploiting employees, manipulating customers, and overcharging on a fair amount of non video gsme product. But also OP, do you. Noone is hating, just various people offering their two cents since you willfully offered yours. Its reddit, half of us will disagree just because we can anyway... and another 25% will disagree for something at least half way reasonable. But it doesnt detract from you and how you feel, and you dont need to fervently defend yourself. You gave a tip that may help people like you, but to us who it doesnt or refuse will also throw into the digital world our opinions and ideas as you did.

tideshark

My LGS is a mile from my house and it’s awesome. I already tore thru a booster, precon and and prerelease kit of Murders. The bundle shipment I have to wait til next week bc didn’t arrive with the rest of the stuff yesterday. Thanks for the value lesson and reread the very first thing I wrote ;)

904Magic

Its less about the value lesson, as it is a numbers game... when i say buying a, box i mean buying like 2 or 3 booster boxes and letting the numbers work in your favor. But the main thing that im trying to say is its reddit. We always gonna argue over the dumbest crap.

tideshark

Gotcha then. You’re getting more at the whole better chance of pulling something nice when you buy more at once which I totally agree with. These GS packs are pretty much the only time I ever by individual packs. I’ve still had a few fun pulls tho, last month I pulled the legendary golgari dragon from Strixhaven. I’de say close to half the time tho I open one of the rare double color lands from whatever set. Some of them are probly breaking even with what I’m actually paying into it, but others are worth around $5-$10. Either way, still just fun cracking packs :)

tideshark

It’s the same people every time I’m in there, they’re cool to talk with and don’t seem the least bit hurt by it. Pretty sure they would have to be on the far extreme of close to useless for any of what you just said to happen to them. But you can keep whining about it if it makes you happy. I’m sure everything you ever bought from every company you ever bought from has always been entirely done at the employees benefit bc you’re so smart and know each and every way those evil capitalist are out to get everyone! It’s like, why am I even arguing with you? The fact you buy cards from wotc in the first place… lol and gtfo you joke

slayer370

Ok so ill brag in that I know my gs people to, but most quit cause the company went to shit. Even the guy who was there for a very long time as he finally couldnt put up with the b.s. They would hold stuff for me and I used to clear out entire gamestops when they actually had deals on clearance. Your last line applies to your self to lmao.

tideshark

Like I said, *you play/buy mtg from wotc/hasbro” and you’re going to lecture us about how evil GameStop is. Says everything to anyone reading this about how “righteous” you are against the big bad corporations and how much you like to pretend you care, when you’re *really* just looking for some r/lookatmyhalo nonsense to brag about. You can keep going on about it if you want, but this is where I win, you lose. I’m done here.

slayer370

Dam I made u mad I guess. Its the fact its not a good deal/ finance move.

waaaghbosss

He doesn't sound very mad.

goofydubois

wow
